New Station Layout (recap)

The new station layout has a total of 30 connectors, 10 per view. Each connector has 22 holes instead of the previous 18 but all of these are not used in every connector (this is shown later in the light guide map).

Version 2.5

This is the version that is being considered if there is initially only one solenoid. It will consist of two trackers as shown, back to back with an absorber in between set inside one solenoid.

Minimum Pitch

These two views show adjacent stations with a pitch of 100mm. It is difficult to assess the bend radius required on the fibres from this model therefore we will need to make a model using the carbon fibre stations and simulating an appropriate thickness where the fibre planes pass over the radius of the station. What the model shows is that it will be very tight

Version 3 (Final)

This will be the final version to be installed inside two solenoids. It will consist of two trackers as shown each consisting of 5 stations. The definitive station pitch has yet to be decided but this will only effect the space frames and the internal light guide length.

Station Connectors

The new Station connectors are being made at Imperial College. These are to be used in the construction of the fourth station which is to be used at the test beam in Japan. We have asked for a price for the manufacture of enough connectors to complete the full tracker assemblies.

(£13.25 + mat’l. per set)

Patch Panel Connectors

This is the 128 way patch panel connector. It is designed to maintain a vacuum in the bore of the cryostatThe 128 channels make it a match for the VLPC cassette. All the routing of the fibres takes place inside the chamber.

Progress at Liverpool

This sequence shows the station mould being produced in the Liverpool workshop. There has since been a second mould made and a new ‘improved’ station produced

Assembly Area

The area has now been refurbished. It now has air conditioning and the lighting level (no UV) has been raised. The linear stages and optical systems are in place and operational. We have installed enough storage to accommodate all of the components required to build the full trackers. The bottom picture shows an area for QA tests currently being developed at Brunel.

Assembly Equipment

Most of the assembly equipment will remain the same as used on the first prototype although with a few improvements. The station holder has had to be re-made as the station profile has changed this gave us the opportunity to change the bearing system to improve ease of use and the alignment method between holder and station to speed up the fitting.

Alignment/Stability

To develop a stable system we plan to carry out a series of assembly tests. To allow us to determine the position of each station we will be fitting 3 ruby spheres to each station, these can then be measured on our CMM. This will allow us to not only check the stability of the structure but will also allow us to know the positional repeatability we can expect from the locating system.

Summary

• We are now ready to build the 4th station and this will allow one more round of ‘fine tuning’.

• The design of the final layout be it 2.5 or final needs to start now and this will involve not only the tracker but all of its neighbours.

• It will be necessary to run a series of tests on the final structure to assess its stability

• Busy times ahead
