    Accuracies of Mitutoyo Gage Blocks

All Mitutoyo gage blocks meet or exceed all known specifications. The flatness, parallelism and surface finish necessary to achieve the required accuracies are the same as or better than government requirements.

Accuracy Gage blocks offered by an all-round precision measuring machinemanufacturer, Mitutoyo, guarantee such a high accuracy that users can use themwithout anxiety. Needless to say, Mitutoyo has established a traceability systemfor our measurement products, up to the Metrology Management Center of theNational Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) and wehave been certified by the Japanese government as an accredited laboratory.

Wringing The lapping technique is one of Mitutoyos specialties. Our advancedlapping technique, developed for more than a half century, enables us to achievethe best flatness and surface roughness needed for gage blocks and realize a greatwringing force.

Abrasion Resistance and Dimensional Stability High-carbon high-chromesteel is employed to sufficiently satisfy a variety of material characteristics required forgage blocks. A high degree of hardness, obtained by our heat treatment technologyand that reassures users, as well as methodically repeated heat treatment, havesuccessfully reduced deterioration change over time to the minimum.

Mitutoyo Gage Blocks and Inspection Certificates

A Certificate of Inspection is furnished with all Mitutoyo gage blocks with aserial number on the case and an identification number on each block. Thedeviation of each block is registered. For this inspection, each gage block ismeasured relative to the upper level master using a gage block comparator.Grade K gage blocks are manufactured by absolute measurement using an

interferometer. The gage block set and discrete gage block are supplied witha Certificate of Calibrat ion. TheCertificate of Calibration specifiesthe deviation from the nominallength. (Comparative measurement, however, is performed for all squaregage blocks.)

A Certificate of Accuracy, traceable to theNIST, is furnished with each MITUTOYOgage block set and individual block

    Traceability of Gage Blocks

Traceability of length to NIST (National

    Institute of Standards and Technology)

    is attainable only through the

comparison of what is known as theend standards, or gage blocks. The

gage blocks are, in turn, compared with

    the stabilized wavelength of helium-

    neon laser under controlled conditions.

At Mitutoyo, our sets of standards

are calibrated at NIST. They are first-

    generation artifact standards in the

    hierarchy of traceability.

Our A2LA (American Association forLaboratory Accreditation) Accredited

    Calibration Lab (A2LA Certificate

#750-01) is among the most capable

in North America able to provide

    accredited calibrations on a wide

range of measuring instruments and artifacts from all manufacturers, including

gage blocks, small measuring tools, all brands of step gages, cylindrical squares and

roundness hemispheres. Employing one of the worlds most accurate, ultra-precise

Coordinate Measuring Machines enables us to offer the lowest measurementuncertainty commercially available for a wide variety of length standards. And

our fully automated gage block comparators allow us to offer an unmatched

combination of accuracy, price, and turn-around time.

    CERA Blocks

CERA blocks, made of ceramic materials with

superior surface quality, that were developed by

    Mitutoyos ultra precision machining techniques

solve all problems that the steel gage block had.

    1. Corrosion-ResistantAnti-corrosion treatment is not required when handlednormally (i.e. with fingers), resulting in simple maintenance and storage.

    2. No Burrs Caused by Dents, etc. Since the CERA Block is very hard, it will notscratch and is highly resistant to burrs. If a burr is formed, it can easily beremoved with a ceramic deburring stone (Ceraston).

    3. Abrasion Resistant CERA Blocks have 10 timesthe abrasion resistance of steel gage blocks.

    4. Dimensional Stability CERA Blocks are freefrom dimensional change over time.

    5. MarkingThe black characters, indicating thenominal length, are inscribed by laser and areclearly visible against the white surface of the block.

    6. Anti-magnetic Nature Keeps Away Steel Powders

    7. High wringing force An even, dense tissue canmaintain a strong wringing force.

    8. Material of CERA block

    9. Closest Expansion Coefficient to SteelThe thermal expansion coefficient of a CERABlock is quite similar to that of a steel gage block.

    10. Highly Resistant Against Drops andOther Shocks The CERA Block material is one ofthe toughest ceramics materials. It is extremelydifficult to crack under normal use.
