Galen Debutante Ball

The bud lights twinkled, the flowers bloomed and once again St. Patrick’s Hall shone for the Galen Debutante Ball held on Saturday May 9th. The debutantes and their partners were presented to Deputy Principal (Staff & Students), Mr Pat Arcuri and his wife Claudia. Will Robinson and Olivia Sorrenson did a great job in responding on behalf of the debutantes and their partners to Mr Arcuri’s speech.The couples wowed their guests with their fantastic dancing and their glamorous looks. Under the guidance of Anthony Pepers and Cherise McKean from Intencity Dance Academy, the students mastered and perfectly executed the Merrilyn, Samba and Progressive Tango. Parents were then invited to join the debutantes to dance the Evening Three Step, and parents were also very skilled!

The debutantes, their partners and guests danced the night away to the musical prowess of Sambury, until the clock

chimed midnight and it was time to leave before the debutantes turned back into the teens we see everyday! A big thank you to the members of the Galen Parents Association, their family members and the girls from Galen’s Hospitality classes for their help on the night.

Year 11 Co-ordinator Mrs Kirsty Watson also extended her thanks to Allison King and the Parents Association for their coordination of the Ball and for the parents of the Debs and their partners for helping out with all the jobs on the night. “It was a very special evening for all of the debutantes and their families.” Congratulations to the 14 couples who celebrated their debutante ball, which was the culmination of many hours of preparation and practice.

Board AGM outcomes

At the AGM of the Galen Catholic College Board last Thursday night the Board approved a change in its Constitution that will allow for the appointment to the Board of greater numbers of parents and community members. This follows a commitment the Board made 12 months ago to actively seek greater participation from these two groups of stakeholders.

In September last year around 20 parents attended an Information Night outlining the role of the Board and its 5 permanent sub-committees. We then asked parents to complete an expression of interest in joining the Board and/or one of its sub-committees. As a result, a number of parents then attended two Board meetings in 2015 as invited guests.

I am very happy to report that the following parents have joined the Board as new members:• Hannah Clancy• Karen Archer• Tracey Bright• Cheryl Impink• Colin McClounan

I can also report that Irene Apostolopoulos has joined the Board as staff representative following the resignation of Anthony Batters. The Board thanked Anthony for his work on the Board over the past 18 months – he was the only member of the previous Board stepping down.

At the AGM, parent Mark Williams was re-appointed as Chair and Cheryl Impink was appointed as Deputy Chair.

Year 8 CampWe wish the students and staff of Year 8 Homerooms 5 – 8 all the best on their camp to Anglesea on Monday to Wednesday of this week, and Year 8 Homerooms 1 – 4 who will be attending from Wednesday to Friday.

Mid-year exams for Years 10 & 11, G.A.T. for Year 12Good luck to all Years 10 and 11 students as they sit their mid-year exams over the coming week. All students undertaking a VCE Unit 3 & 4 (i.e. Year 12 level) subject will sit the General Achievement Test (G.A.T.) on Wednesday June 10. We wish them all the best.

2016 Year 7 interviewsWe are heading into the final weeks of interviews for the 2016 Year 7 cohort. What a refreshing and energizing exercise this is for those conducting the interviews! These interviews allow both the students and their parents the opportunity to find out more information about the school and what to expect as a future Galen student / family, and gives Galen a great chance to find out more about the particular likes, hobbies, interests and aspirations of the current Grade 6 students. Offers of enrolment will be made closer to the end of this term once all interviews have been conducted.

On Friday the 22nd of May 70 Galen College students attended the Italian opera ‘Madame Butterfly’ at the Victorian Arts Centre in Melbourne. When we arrived in Melbourne we headed to South Gate for dinner. In our groups we chose to eat at a variety of food out-lets. After our dinner we headed back to the bus to get changed into our formal clothes and met at the Theatre with everyone else for the paparazzi attack. Everyone looked great and Mrs Froude had a ball as our professional photographer.

‘Madame Butterfly’ was an Italian opera about a young Japanese woman Cio-Cio-San who falls in love with F. B. Pinkerton a Lieutenant in the American navy. After being called on a mission Cio-Cio-San waited for him to return for 3 years with not so much as a letter. When the marriage broker returns to tell butterfly that he’s not coming back she ignores this news’ despite a handwritten letter from F. B. Pinkerton himself. When she spies his ship on the horizon she eagerly awaits his return with their son and the housemaid (for 20 extremely long minutes). She is forced to sleep after a night’s wait and whilst she’s in slumber he sneakily re-turns with his new wife in a surprising plot twist. After much debate over who the child should stay with, it is forced upon butterfly that F. B. Pinkerton and his new wife will take the son back to America.

Whilst we all thought the opera was entertaining in the beginning not all found it so engaging as to stay awake for the full 3 hours. Mr Arcuri being the biggest

offender next to Lucy Lee and Blake Nixon who decided to “rest their eyes” for a short time. “Not for long” said Mr Arcuri. However Ms Bellani tells a different story when she was forced to elbow him awake for the finale. He can’t have been tired the next day as he too slept on the way to Melbourne and on the way back! After leaving the opera we braved the cold in our dresses and heels to walk down Lygon street for a small snack. Jack Jenkin decided he couldn’t bare his hunger any longer and a large snack would be appropriate. He, along with Liam Cook decided to buy a pizza that was cooked 5 minutes before we were to leave. It wasn’t the time he was worried about however. His medium size half BBQ chicken and half Margherita pizza cost him a hefty $19.20! We were all keen to get back on the bus as it was about minus 20 degrees and sleep for us all was becoming highly anticipated, besides Mr Arcuri who really didn’t need the extra 3 hours.

It was a great experience and all had fun. We look forward to next year. Thank you to the teachers Mr Cudini who organised the trip and Mr Arcuri, Ms Bellani, Mr Ottavi, Mrs Froude, Ms Taylor and Sofia who gave up their time to take us. We applaud Ms Bellani who was able to stay awake longer than her non-pregnant husband Mr Arcuri.

A Night Out at the Opera

The Galen Year 10 Formal proved to be one of the best yet, with a record 178 Year 10 students attending at St Pat’s on Tuesday night. There was much anticipation as the students prepared for their red carpet arrival. As the night progressed the students were able to showcase their skills on the dance floor, which resulted from many hours of dance rehearsals.

Organiser, Year 10 Coordinator Liz Morrow said ‘ We would like to thank each and every person who made this special event a success. The students are also to be commended for their maturity, respect and involvement. This occasion will hold a special place in the memories of everyone who attended’.

Help needed for Wangaratta’s own cycling champion

Tomarsh Loki is one of the region’s most promising young cycling talents.

At 18 years of age, he has already won a National Championship in his age group as well as consistently finishing in the top five.

More recently, Tomarsh has finished 8th in the Oceana Road Cycling Championships and in April, he received a bronze medal in the Australian Junior Mountain Climb Championships.

However, following a heart-wrenching, painful and expensive crash near Chiltern on the 17th of May this year, his promising cycling career is in jeopardy.

Tomarsh and his family are struggling to find the funds to purchase a new bike, and with the Junior National Road Championships in July, Tomarsh is racing against the clock to raise the funds to be ready for this event.

For every $20 dollars that is raised towards his new bike, three of his mates will ride a kilometre for this good cause. Bit by bit we can slowly build up the funds to make sure that Tomarsh makes it to this big event. With your help, we can get him there.

On Tuesday 12th May David Kobler from Your Choicez presented to approximately 55 parents in the Auditorium on “Raising Teens in a Hypersexualised Society”.

David highlighted the importance of: • connecting with your child, • making time to be there for them, • being open to and having discussions about the range of issues and challenges facing young people today.

David acknowledged that this can be a challenge for parents. A great time to have these conversations can be in the car when traveling to and from school, sporting events and other activities.

David provided a list of resources including parenting books, websites, a list of apps all parents should be aware of, and suggested websites to help keep your children safe online and to restrict access when needed.

Fundraising events continued at Galen last week to raise money for Caritas’ Nepal Earthquake Appeal. On Monday May 25th, a small group of dedicated students worked with Mrs Hunter to position nearly 3500 of the collected coins in a 3.5 x 3.5m installation piece.

The image can be viewed in a number of contexts, and although the initial purpose of the public art-work was intended to help raise student awareness of Social Justice issues and to inspire them to “be more” (Caritas’ campaign slogan) than just fundrais-ers, the image has flourished into quite a significant visual message of hope and compassion for those on the receiving end of our fundraising efforts.

Social Justice group gather coins tolend a helping hand for Nepal

Too often, our thoughts and intentions never reach the people we help... This image of hope will reach those in need and may instill a sense of courage and faith as the Nepalese begin to rebuild their lives. It is the ‘big picture’ that is too often forgotten when we donate to different charities and fundraisers throughout the year; thinking our small contribution couldn’t possibly help. It has also been said that this image illustrates the good will of the Galen community, in rallying together to collect money to help those less fortunate. And in a more spiritual sense, it depicts a divine en-ergy that seemingly ascends.

Year 10 Work Experience

ReminderA reminded that all Year 10 students will complete their Work Experience from June 9th to 12th. There will be no school for Year 10 students during that time. If a student has not arranged a placement, parents/guardians will need to organize supervision for their child.

VET Hospitality‘Foodies’ Tour of Lygon Street

On Tuesday 21st of April the 2nd Year VET Hospitality students participated in a “Foodies” tour of Lygon Street in Melbourne. Some of the places visited were Baker D Chirico, Market Lane coffee, La Latteria cheese shop, Five Points deli, Donati’s fine meats, Brunetti cakes, Spice House and a Gelateria.

The students found out about the culinary history of the Carlton area and the influences of the different cultures on our modern day cuisines. The tour included a tasting from each venue and most brought goodies to take home. This was concluded with an authentic Italian lunch in the hub of Lygon street. This opportunity gave the students a broader experience of Hospitality and all it has to offer.

James Phelan CompetitionFollowing James Phelan’s visit to Galen in April and his entertaining workshops with the Year 7s a competition was run based on his message to the students. The competition took two parts. One, a 10 question challenge based on the information given by James and the other part was a short story of 300 words based on James’ writing processes. His criteria for an ideal short story would be to set the scene quickly, introduce the characters straight away, know your ending and begin your story close to the end.

Many students entered into the spirit of the competition and the eventual winners of the question and answer component were Franz Ott and Bree Willett-Linsell both with a perfect score of 10/10. Franz and Bree won copies of ‘Chasers’ the 1st book in James’ Alone series. The short story winners were Sam Willoughby and Joel McGennisken, both these students won a copy of James’ book 13.

This time we had gone too far. “Come back here!” A man yelled from behind me. Jack and I made a big mistake. We trespassed on a Top Secret warehouse, I don’t know why but we did, and now we are running for our life. “We’re almost – There!” Jack said trying to keep up. There was a big gate with a small hole large enough for us to fit through. A man sprang in front of us. He didn’t look nice he wore a bullet proof vest and a really scary looking rifle on his back. I grabbed a fuel barrel and flung it in front of us, we quickly darted left towards a big shed containing boxes. The Shed had a rusty old door swinging to its side by its hinges. Jack led the way knocking it down with his hand, we headed past the boxes and out towards the gate. Jack is tall and very fast he has short bushy brown hair, but can never keep it neat. I’m shortish with muscly

legs so I can run just as fast, my blonde hair reflects the sun, so whenever I run past it’s hard to know who it is. We sprinted at top speed towards the exit, but were cut off by two men with rifles pointed at us. We were surrounded. But we weren’t giving up that easy. Jack winked at me and pointed his eyes at a box of fireworks. I knew what he was thinking and the odds were impossible. I picked up a stone near my foot and threw it at a man. It hit his gun and set the trigger off. A bullet went flying at a fuel barrel and burst into flames. The fireworks caught alight. We were out of there!

The Big Mistake - a short story

On Thursday 21st May, the Year 9 Discovery program held the Night of the Australian Notables in the Auditorium and Year 9 classrooms. The students worked hard for 4 weeks, researching their notable and preparing their visual display for the evening. On the evening, the students got into characters, dressing up and taking on the role of their chosen notable. Three students received guest choice awards and an iTunes voucher.

Year 9 Night of the Notables

‘On Thursday the 21st Of May 9.1, 9.2, 9.3 and 9.4 held their Night of Notables. We had 4 weeks to prepare and on the night finally got to present our displays and reveal our costumes. On the night I came as Graeme Base, (he writes and illustrates books such as Animalia). My display was made up of water coloured pencils, paint brushes, some of his books and some drawings of his that I painted. When the night came around I was fairly nervous, but I decided I didn’t need to be. I enjoyed the night and would gladly do it again.’ Emma Christy 9/2


Intermediate Girls NetballThe Intermediate Girls A team had a very successful day. The first game they played defeating Marion College 21 to 10 they then took on Wodonga Middle Years College – Felltimber winning 26-1 and finally they won 23 – 2 against Wodonga Senior Secondary to see them go straight into the Grand Final. The girls stepped up their pace and played their best game of the day against Catholic College Wodonga pushing it out to take home to win by 7 goals. Best players as voted by the team were Ellie Hourigan and Taylah Reidy. Thanks to our team Manager for the day Meg Amery. It was a great team effort all day, and look forward to playing in the next round on the 12th of August in Wangaratta.

The Intermediate girls played in the Senior Pool. They drew in their first game 20-20. Unfortunately they then lost the next two games. They tried their best and matched it with the Seniors however, we couldn’t manage to get across the line to make it into finals. Best player for the day was Maddy Muller as voted by the girls. Thanks to Amie Hourigan who was our scorer all day.

Year 7 Materials Technology students learn from the

professionalsJim Doyle, President of the ‘Woodies” (Wangaratta Woodworkers Club), recently did a scroll saw demo for Year 7 Materials Technology. He came with two other help-ers, and showed the students what they do at The Woodies with some work examples. He talked about scroll sawing and did a demo. They all helped the students with their work. It was a great class, the students worked well and listened respectfully. Jim said he enjoyed the experience and the stu-dents were very attentive during the lesson.


Year 11 & 12 Senior Football Bushrangers Cup

The Year 11 & 12 boys football team played in the Bushrangers Cup on Tuesday 19th May. They played 2 games at Wanganui Park against Notre Dame and Wanganui Secondary College.

Game 1 Galen 5– 2 – 32 defeated Notre Dame 2 - 3 - 15

This was a very hard and fast contest with both teams displaying good skills in the wet and slippery conditions. Excellent defensive work by the Galen backline prevented Notre Dame from scoring. When Galen went forward strong overhead marking and good crumbing goals resulted in a solid win for the Galen team.

Game 2 Wanganui 6 – 4 – 40 defeated Galen College 3 – 5 - 23

After a very even first quarter the Galen boys weren’t able to sustain the pressure against the bigger bodies of the Wanganui team. Although the boys tried extremely hard they weren’t able to overcome the lead and consequently weren’t able to take the points.

A big thank you to the 20 boys who made themselves available to represent their school on the day. They played very well together and enjoyed the experience of football at this level.

Thanks to Ben Talarico and Will Nolan who assisted with the organisational duties as well as our bus driver, Phil Waite who was the goal umpire for the day.

Semester 2 officially commences June 16

Year 12 VCE students, this is an opportunity to consolidate your Unit 3 achievements with a strong Unit 4 effort in readiness for the end of year exams. VCAL students are encouraged to continue your persistence and to finish the year feeling proud of your application. This is also a chance for Year 11 students to make a fresh start with Unit 2 subjects and with their VCAL programs. You are encouraged to reflect on your performance in semester 1, learn from this experience and commit to a consistent approach for semester 2 as a basis for Year 12.

Students wishing to transfer to VCAL must meet with Miss Code to discuss the requirements of this option.

Students who are running late for an exam including the GAT or who are unable to make it to an exam need to communicate with Mrs. Woods, Mrs. O’Dwyer, or Mr. Grogan. Please note VCAL classes and associated work placements will operate as normal (timetable included in last newsletter and emailed).

Year 8 Upper Hume SoccerWell done to the Year 8 girls team who competed in the Upper Hume Soccer Competition in Wodonga on Wednesday 13th June. Catholic College Wodonga defeated Galen 4-2 in the first match, however the 2nd & 3rd match saw the girls unite together and win both matches 3-1, and 3-0. Then Huon won the fourth match as they girls became tired after four games straight, winning the game 2-0.

Well done to Chloe Gibson who guided the group throughout the day, Reagan Tomaino who was an excellent striker, Jade Elliot & Kendyl White for their strong defence, Ella Henry & Liv Richards for their first time goalie efforts, and Lillian Walton, Chloe Storer, Katherine Jolly, Ellie Laffy, Jess Vincent, Gemma Ryan and Chelsea Currie for their consistent efforts and getting in there and having a go. All girls enjoyed the day and increasing their skill base, despite the chilly wind. It was an absolute pleasure to watch the girls enjoy, learn and represent their school so positively within the community.

Thanks to Ren Seymour who selected the team and Sarah Hynes & Ryan McNeilly who provided expert coaching and assisted umpiring during the day.

Year 8 Boys SoccerIt was a disappointing day for the Year 8 boys soccer team at the Latrobe University ground in Wodonga on Wednesday 13th May. Having won the Hume region title in 2014 the Galen boys were hoping to repeat their success this year but it was not to be. In the first game against eventual winners, Catholic College Wodonga, Galen dominated the first half only to be denied time and time again by a wonderful performance by the CCW keeper who was the stand out player of the match. The final score was 4-2 in CCW’s favour. Galen’s best- Max Grant, Louis Gorman, Josh Walker. Goals- Louis Gorman 2.

Galen’s second match resulted in a very easy win over Marian College Myrleford 8-0. Best- Josh Walker, Alessandro Belci, Ethan Whiley, Josh Masters. Goals- Ethan Whiley 3, Louis Gorman 2, Max Grant 1, Mitch Holt 1, Josh Walker 1.

Too many Galen players thought that their third match would be another easy win but they were in for a shock when Huon College defeated Galen 3-2. Not enough Galen players were able to have an impact on the game. Best-Louis Gorman. Goals-Ethan Whiley 1, Josh Masters 1 (Pen.)

With the pressure off, Galen dominated their final game defeating Felltimber Wodonga 10-0 Best- Louis Gorman, Josh Walker, Alessandro Belci, Josh Masters, Nathan Lee.

Thanks to Connor Delaney and Matt Jordan who were our linesmen for the day.

Upper Hume Cross CountryCongratulations to all students who participated in the Upper Hume Cross Country Championships held in Myrtleford on the Monday 25th May. Students ran either a 3km or 5km course depending on their age.

Year 7 student Jace McQuade had a great run in the 3km event, winning his age group. Year 9 student Alex Race-Stelling and Year 10 student Eli Holland-Dean both finished 2nd in their respective age groups. Whilst Fergus Samon also ran well, winning the 20yr old 5km event, in 19.27mins.

The Hume Cross Country will be held in Broadford on the 17th June. We wish them all the best at the Hume Championships.

On Tuesday 28th April the Year 11 & 12 Boys soccer team departed for La Trobe Park Wodonga to com-pete in the Upper Hume soccer tournament. The team consisted of; Alex McIntosh, Peter Williams, Jack Rochford, Lachlan Campbell, Alex Antonello, Tom Wales, Aaron Taylor, James Pasztor, Zac Elliot, Lachlan Busk, Tim Feehan, Alex Reid, Caleb Dawson and Martin Torpey

We commenced the round robin tournament against Wodonga Senior Secondary College. The Wodonga team was stacked with quality players with 4 whom represent Murray United. Galen College commenced the game well with lots of pressing in the attacking half of the feild. Even though both teams tried their best to beat the opposition defenses it finished off as a 0 - 0 draw. Best on ground for Galen College was goalkeeper Caleb Dawson as he made some fine saves in the second half. Other strong players were Alex Reid and aron Taylor in the midfield and Lachlan Busk out wide on the right side.

In the second game Galen College played against Catholic College Wodonga and won the game 3 – 0. Goalscorers were Jack Roachford 2 and Lachlan Busk 1, Best players were Lachlan Campbell, Alex McIntosh and Lachlan Busk

In the thrid game we played Marian College Myrtl-eford. After a very challenging first half Galen took the lead from a great passing display with 12 passes completed before Jack Roachford found the back of

the net. Alex Reid also scored a lovely goal after getting away from his defender and putting a shot low and wide of the Marian goalkeeper. Zac Elliot finished the game off with a great solo goal to end the scoreline as a 3 – 0 win to Galen College.

In the final game, Galen College played against Vic-tory Lutheran College. Striker Zac Elliott finished the game with a hat-trick of goals displaying his speed and strength on the ball to evade his defenders. Again the Galen defense stood tall with Alex McIntosh, Aaron Taylor, James Pasztor all providing excellent rebound out of defence. Mr Arcuri thought that Celeb Dawson’s display in goals as a goal keeper all day was the best he had seen as a soccer coach at Galen for a very long time!

Galen finished off winning the Upper Hume Yr 11 & 12 soccer tournament and well now advance to the Hume zone in Shepparton on Tuesday 4th August.

Year 11 & 12 Soccer

Scots School Equestrian Challenge

On the 16th of May 7 Galen Students took the trip up to Albury to compete at the Scots School Equestrian Challenge. The Galen team consisted of Sarah Berry, Hayley Berry, Lucy O’Connor, Alyce Hince, Rebecca Jordan, Jessica Jordan and Amie Hourigan. It was a great day ridden by all riders with many places and some wins with Galen placing 10th in the teams. Hayley Berry finished 12th, Alyce Hince 15th and Sarah Berry equal 21st in the Junior Individual Champion. Amie Hourigan placed 5th in the Senior Overall Champion.


Outdoor Ed NewsRock-climbing and hiking were the two activities of choice for Term 2, in Outdoor Education. Year 11 and 12 ventured off to Mt Pilot and Eldorado for an enjoyable and challenging day of rock climbing. During these trips the VCE students developed an understanding of rock environments and how to explore these areas safely. As well as participating in the climbing sessions students also learnt about rope setup procedures and safety requirements. Year 10s started off the term with their bushwalks to the

second tallest peak in Victoria, Mt Feathertop. A change was in order for the first group when high winds and cold temperatures meant walking across the Razorback was problematic. Instead students enjoyed a pleasant but challenging climb up Bungalow Spur from Harrietville. Fine weather graced the second group and they were lucky enough to make it up to the summit. The semester of trips was finished off in week 5 with a session of indoor rock climbing at Albury.

Galen year 9 & 10 boys’ volleyball team traveled down to MSAC in Albert Park on Thursday 21st May. With a 5:30am start, we were in for a long day, but the boys were prepared and ready to go.

Game 1: Murtoa College defeated Galen20-13, 20-13After an early morning and a long trip, the boys were still asleep and barely challenged the volleyball school from Murtoa. They looked intimidated and lacked confidence. Frazer Judd was named Captain again, and Ollie Willett elected himself as the ‘hype boy’, though it clearly had no effect in this game.

Game 2: Eltham HS defeated Galen20-9, 22-20The boys finally got their heads in the game, and got around each other, finally smiling and encouraging. They played well once they got going, though it was Jack Jenkin’s 10-second late reflexes that shocked the boys into gear in the first set. They were unlucky in losing the second set and it was Ollie Willett’s speech that revved them up and Lochie Hourigan’s decision to change tact and win points with his left hand instead of his right. Tom Young yet again continued to work on his serve and rocked a few drop serves that threw the opponent. Captain Judd kept the talk up and found space with his serve – almost always on purpose. A much better game where we saw the boys playing like we know they can.

Game 3: Galen defeated Hampton Park SC13-20, 20-15, 15-11Eddie Dayman made a promise at the start of the day, and in the final game he actually did this and started blocking everything that came at him. Juddy and Lochie got in on this action and started smashing returns, scaring their opponents on multiple occasions. Pushed to three sets, Tyler Spencer improved his serve and gained the confidence he

needed to push his opponent, as did Jack who was spiking the ball at any given chance. Props to Lochie for putting his body on the line and going for the hard ball. The boys worked hard for this win and really deserved it; it was also nice to finish the day on a high.

Huge congratulations to the boys for making it this far. It is impressive for a country school to get to State level without dropping a game, or even a set on their way there. It was a massive day and we can take a lot away from it to improve their chances in future years. It is a credit to the boys who showed maturity and made decisions on the day for the themselves; they also gave up many lunchtimes to prepare with almost no complaints at all.

Well done, lets look to next year!

Year 11/12 Senior Girls

Netball The senior girls started off with a strong game against Catholic College Wodonga, leading by 4 goals at half time but at full time, the score drew. We had strong shooters Amanda Umanski and Renee Collet throughout the first game, keeping the girls in the game, with powerful defence by Gemma Enever, Maddy Smith and Brooke Morley producing rebounds and working with the mid-court players to get the ball down to the court to the shooters.

The second game was an easy game although the girls lost a little skill and only won by a few goals. With strong mid court from Montana Eisenhauer, Abby Steegstra, Jess Fisher, Georgia Cargill and Tayla Russo. The girls produced a tough game against Trinity, having the girls rebounding and intercepting ball throughout the game and coming through with a win.

Game three was another win for the girls, having the girls picking their skills back up and having a better game than game two. The girls stuck strongly to each player and came out with a win against Cathedral College.

Having a draw placed the girls equal first in pool A, but miss-ing out on the grand final by percentage placed the girls in disappointment but they carried on with the last game for the day against Senior Secondary college Wodonga. Having fought well from attack and defense all day.

Thanks to Brooke Morely for managing the team so well, and her mum Mrs Kristie Morely for coaching the team. Also to Kylie Girolami and Kate Howard for accompanying the team on the day.

Year 7/8 Bushrangers CupA combined Year 7/8 team played in the Bushrangers Cup on Tuesday 19th May, in Wangaratta.

Congratulations to all of the players that contributed on the day.Best players on the day were Pat Hourigan, Bailey Annett, Nick Sartori and Riley Calvene.

The Year 9 & 10 Girls Soccer Team played in the Upper Hume Division at Wodonga Kelly Park on Thursday 28th May. They played 4 teams which were Cathedral College Wangaratta, Wodonga Middle Years College, Wangaratta High and Marion College Myrtleford.

Game 1Galen: 2Cathedral College: 0

After a slow start (with the girls actually learning how to play the game), Galen girls were very strong in defense with Georgia Mahoney stopping all balls going into goals and Kate Reiter swapping in the second half doing the same. It was intense play throughout the mid-field with the ball eventually getting to our attackers and Lauren Torpey kicking 2 goals.

Game 2 Wodonga Middle Years College: 4Galen: 0The second game was our hardest game for the day with Middle years defeating their first team by 9 goals. Galen girls put up a good fight with our defense standing ground.

Game 3 Galen: 0Wangaratta High School: 0Game number 3 was the unofficial “Wang Derby” with the Galen girls putting up a good show against fellow Wangaratta team. Isabella Carnovale was has great control of the ball in the Mid-field and Madison O’Keefe seeing the ground more than the ball.

Game 4Galen: 5Marion College Myrtleford: 1This was our last game, and after playing four games straight (and with bribes to go to McDonalds), the girls put in %100 effort with Lauren Torpey kicking 2 goals, Madison O’Keefe kicking 2 goals and Georgia Mahoney kicking 1.

Thanks to Ren Seymour who selected the team and was an excellent coach for the day and Ryan Mcneilly who was umpire and linesman for the day.

Year 8 Upper Hume NetballOur Yr 8 Netball Squad were a pleasure to work with and all represented Galen College proudly with both their on court performances and their mature and responsible conduct off court.

Our A team won all matches for the day and will progress to the next round of competition. Best players included : Jorja Reidy, Olivia Richards and Jade Elliott.

Our B team also won all matches despite playing some uneven opposition. They all remained positive and got the most out of their experiences on the day. Best players were: Gabby Wales, Alana Criukshank, Ally Halton & Mollie Shanley.

A huge thank you to our amazing team managers – Georgina Northey and Ebony Donald and our competent umpires for the day – Reagan Tomaino and Lillian Walton. Also a big thank you to Mrs Deb Doyle for running a very smooth and efficient competition on the day.
