Oklahoma quarterback Landry Jones moves in the pocket during the Sooners’24-19 loss to Kansas State. Jones has been very clear about his disappointingseason to date. Today, he can do something about it.

THE VIEW

Landry’s struggleIt’s funny, but this may be

the season everybodygets to really know and

like Landry Jones.A fixture at Bob Stoops’

weekly press conferencethis season, even twoMondays ago during an off-week, the Sooner quarter-back has proven refreshingbehind the microphone.

One of the questionsgiven him this weekinvolved dealing with thepressure of being, well, him.

Jones talked about his“circle.”

“I think, for me, it’s notreally paying attention to thepeople outside of my circleand just listening to thepeople inside my circle,” hesaid. “My teammates,Whitney, my coaches andmy family are the peoplewho are going to influenceme and encourage me.”

“Whitney,” of course, isWhitney Hand, Jones’ wifeand the best player onOklahoma women’s

basketball coach SherriCoale’s team, even if Big 12coaches only made her anhonorable mention presea-son pick.

It’s hard to know whatmost fans care or thinkabout Jones’ circle, but putme in the camp that notonly thinks it’s pretty coolJones’ wife has a place in hisfootball circle, but that he’ssecure enough about it tonot mind telling us.

Also, put me in the campthat fully understands theSooner Nation’s ultimatejudgment upon Jones willnot be based upon itspersonal feelings for him, nomatter how refreshing he is

The last time Oklahomastarted the Big 12 Confer-ence schedule with two loss-es was 1998. That losingstreak grew to five straightbefore it finally ended. Thecoaching change that fol-lowed was widely praised.

It would be absurd to thinkthe 17th-ranked Sooners (2-1, 0-1 Big 12) are stumblingdown the same inept path asformer coach John Blake’ssquad did 14 years ago. There are 13 seasons of evi-dence that OU coach BobStoops knows how to guide ateam through a successful

season.Nevertheless, once a team

begins spiraling downwardit’s a pattern that’s hard to pullout of.

OU’s opportunity toascend comes today at TexasTech (4-0, 1-0). However, there are so many questionsabout which OU team willshow up. Will it be dominant? Will it be lethargic?

No one knows. The Sooners, however, ful-

ly grasp the magnitude oftoday’s game. It’s been 14days since the season wastipped by a 24-19 Owen Fieldloss to No. 7 Kansas State.

Season on the line?

Sooner defensive back Demontre Hurst reacts during the Kansas State game.Hurst and OU’s secondary will be tested today against Texas Tech.

“When you take a loss, you get that chip onyour shoulder and itkind of revitalizes youand gives you that attitude. I think we’vealways had that attitude(that) whenever we’vehad a loss, we’ve comeback with an attitude.”

Anyone thinkingOklahoma would be in acakewalk today at JonesAT&T Stadium must havejust risen from a decade-longslumber.TheSoonershaven’twon onTexasTech’shome fieldsince 2003and are 4-4against theRedRaiders intheir last four meetings.

Every factor imaginablehas played a part in OU’sstruggles against TexasTech. There was controver-sy in a 2005 loss. A concus-sion suffered by Sam

Bradford was an over-whelming factor in 2007.

In 2009 and last seasonat Owen Field, OU just gotoutplayed.

OU has to play welltoday to end its Texas Techissues. Doing these five

things correctly will reversethe trend:

n OU has vowed to makerunning back DamienWilliams a bigger part of theoffense. It must, becauserunning the ball is theSooners’ route to offensivesuccess. Texas Tech’sKenny Williams is a threat, but the Sooners have moretalent in the backfield andthat advantage must beexploited.

n In August, it would havebeen hard to believe OUquarterback Landry Joneswould be off to such a slowstart. His accuracy issueshave caused the Sooneroffense to sputter. TexasTech quarterback SethDoege already has 15 touch-down passes. Clearly, he’son the same page with hisreceivers.

n Statistically, the RedRaiders have been one ofthe best defenses in thecountry. Their success stopping the run is the reason why. Opponentshave averaged 2.6 yards percarry. But these teams haveplayed varying levels of competition. The Sooners, however, haven’t proventhey can consistently halt arunning game.

n OU coach Bob Stoopssaid there’s nothing“spooky” about playing inLubbock. Three straightlosses at Jones AT&TStadium show the Soonershaven’t played their bestthere. But turnovers are notsupernatural. OU has struggled holding on to theball. If that doesn’t change, itwill lose.

— John Shinn

n The Sooners’ specialteams have been solid in thelast two games. They mustbe tonight, because there’san edge it can exploit. TheRed Raiders have struggledcovering kicks thus far. It’snot a big edge, but theSooners’ return game needsto be a factor. If it is, theSooners can swing a tightgame into the win column.

n Texas Tech has put upgreat numbers, but it hasn’tfaced anything close to a Big12 caliber passing attack. The Sooners haven’t either, but giving up one touchdown pass throughthree games shows theirsecondary is improved. Thiswill be a statement game forOU’s secondary. It will be upto the challenge.

It caused some soulsearching.

“I think at OU, sometimesthings come easily,” middlelinebacker Tom Wort said.“When you take a loss, youget that chip on your shoul-der and it kind of revitalizesyou and gives you that atti-tude. I think we’ve always hadthat attitude (that) wheneverwe’ve had a loss, we’ve comeback with an attitude. Youprepare that much more withintensity. I think it helps.”

OU has played some of itsbest games after losses. Lastseason was highlighted by a58-17 route of Kansas State aweek after the Sooners werestunned by the Red Raiders.

OU rebounded from a lossat Texas A&M in 2010 bythumping Texas Tech. Butthere are no guarantees pasttrends will carry over.

Those previous teams hadalready shown they werecapable of playing dominantfootball. These Soonershaven’t. The offense has beeninconsistent. The defense hashad issues against the run. Ifeither problem carries overit’s going to be tough to win in

an environment where OUhasn’t won since 2003.

Stoops hates to compareseasons. There’s alwayssomething a little differentabout each team. He likes theway his team has practicedfor the last two weeks.

“You’re still gonna have togo and execute well, and wedid at Kansas State a yearago, and didn’t turn the ballover,” he said. “In the end, yes, I see the same kind ofattitude in how they’re work-ing and coming to practice, coming to meetings. “

It doesn’t mean it will trans-late to on-the-field success.

The only guarantee for thisgame is the fact Texas Techhas OU’s undivided attention. The loss to Kansas Stateopened some eyes that mighthave been closed.

Losing has that effect.“I think it just happens

once you lose a game,” centerGabe Ikard said. “You get a lit-tle more focused, maybe. Idon’t know what it is. We justlost to a good team, but it’sone of those things where itdefinitely heightens your

awareness a little bit. “You maybe have a little

small change in, maybe, yourpreparation or something. Each guy is different for that.”

The Sooners have to be dif-ferent today. Two losses tobegin the Big 12 campaignwould qualify as a disaster. The Sooners will either looklike a team most figuredwould win the Big 12 or nes-tle into that role of under-achievers.

Williams has shown he canbe an explosive player ifgiven the opportunity. TheSooners also need to dosomething to dampen thespirits of an often boisterousTexas Tech crowd. Runningthe ball does that better thananything. The Soonershaven’t been able to do it intheir three straight losses atTexas Tech’s home field.

Win the turnoverbattle: This is essential inany game, but it becomesmagnified with the Soonersat minus four in turnovermargin through threegames. They haven’t beenable to set their offense upwith an easy scoring driveall season. OU’s turnoverissues took a potentialtouchdown off the boardand handed Kansas State agift in the last game.Continued generosity likethat will turn the Soonersinto a doormat.

Play well in the firstand fourth quarters: TheSooners must get off to abetter start. They havescored three points in threeopening drives this season.

This will be OU’s first gamein front of a hostile crowd. Itmust do something in theopening minutes to quietTexas Tech fans. Scoring anearly touchdown wouldhelp. This game doesn’tfigure to be a rout. TheSooners are going to haveto play well in the fourthquarter. Giving up a pair oflate touchdowns to KansasState provided the coffin’sfinal nails. That cannothappen again.

Pressure Doege:When these teams met lastseason, Texas Tech

quarterback Seth Doegehad a phenomenal game. One of the reasons was OUwasn’t able to get enoughpressure on him. It’s atough thing to do. The RedRaiders’ scheme is based onshort drops and Doegegetting rid of the ballquickly. The Sooners mustbe able to hit and knockdown some balls at the lineof scrimmage. Doege willpick OU apart if he’s givenample time and has clearpassing windows.

Jones must beaccurate: Running the ball

will take some pressure offOU quarterback LandryJones, but he must play welltoday. That will be definedby how many passes he putson target. Jones was wildlast time out against KansasState, consistently throwingbehind receivers. Most ofthe passes in OU’s offenseare intentionally designed aslong handoffs to receivers.Jones must put the ball ontarget so they can dosomething after the catch.

Weis has his role model

AP Photo

Kansas coach Charlie Weis speaks to his team during a loss to TCU. Weiss has plenty of praise forhis counterpart today, Kansas State coach Bill Snyder.

By Dave SkrettaAP Sports Writer

LAWRENCE, Kan. — Itcould have been interpretedas the first salvo fired againstbitter rival Kansas State theday Charlie Weis was pre-sented as the new coach atKansas.

Weis stepped to the podi-um and, not long into hisintroductory news confer-ence, asked this rhetoricalquestion: “Why was the Uni-versity of Kansas 2-10 (lastseason) and why wasKansas State 10-2? I don’thave that answer, but that iswhat I am here for.”

Over the last 10 months,he may have found someanswers.

“Starting with the headcoach, that might be theirbiggest advantage,” Weissaid with uncanny stoicism, referring to Bill Snyder, whowill be on the opposing side-line Saturday.

Weis didn’t stop there, soeffusive was he in praise ofthe seventh-ranked Wild-cats.

“I like the way they createextra gaps in the run game,”he said, “how they use mis-direction to put pressure ondefenses. If you’re not soundfundamentally on defense, they’ll expose you.

“I have a lot of respect,”Weis said, “for what hedoes.”

Enough respect that Weisbelieves Kansas Stateshould serve as a blueprintfor Kansas.

“I don’t want to get ourfans mad, but it’s a prettygood role model, you know?Everyone wants to look at itdifferently than that, butfrom my perspective, they’redoing everything right.”Weis said Tuesday. “Let’stry to get to that level first. If we can get to that level inthe not-too-distant futurethat would be a good place

to go.”The Wildcats (4-0) are

certainly humming afterbecoming the first rankedteam to win at Oklahomawith Bob Stoops coachingthe Sooners. They’re unde-feated a third of the waythrough the season for thesecond straight year, with aHeisman Trophy candidate

in quarterback Collin Klein,a devastating ground gameled by John Hubert and adefense that somehow findsways to make stops.

In short, they’re every-thing to which the Jayhawks(1-3) are aspiring.

Kansas has certainly gonethrough growing pains since

Weis: New Jayhawk coach doesn’t have to look far to find his inspiration

Monroe a weapon for LonghornsBy Jim VertunoAP Sports Writer

AUSTIN, Texas — D.J.Monroe touched the ball forthe first time as a TexasLonghorn and went 89 yardsfor a touchdown. That wasSept. 5, 2009.

Since then, coach MackBrown has spent his weeklypress conferences hearingvariations of the same ques-tion: “Why doesn’t D.J. getthe ball more?”

The answers were simple:Too inconsistent. Struggledto catch. Crowded backfield.Needed to learn the play-book.

That’s all changing now. Afifth-year senior, Monroe hasscored in every game this

season and last week set aschool record with his thirdcareer kickoff return for atouchdown, his first since hisfreshman season.

“I was just waiting forsomeone to kick the ball tome again,” Monroe said asNo. 11 Texas (4-0, 1-0 Big 12)prepares to host No. 8 WestVirginia (4-0, 1-0) on Satur-day.

Monroe still doesn’t getthat many touches. He’s justmaking them count. His fourtouchdowns are tied for sec-ond on the team.

“He gets the ball in hishands and he makes thingshappen. He provides aspark,” Texas quarterbackDavid Ash said.

Longhorns fans have been

waiting for Monroe to fulfillthe promise he showed inthe first game of the 2009 sea-son when Colt McCoy wasstill the quarterback and theLonghorns were chargingfor the national champi-onship game.

There have been so manyteases along the way.

Heading into his seniorseason, Monroe didn’t wantto be a player best remem-bered for unfulfilled potential.Monroe quit running track inthe spring to focus on how hecould better fit into second-year offensive coordinatorBryan Harsin’s game plan.

West Virginia defensivecoordinator Joe DeForestknows he has to account forMonroe whenever he’s on

the field. DeForest tried torecruit Monroe when he wasas assistant at OklahomaState

“He’s one of the fastestkids we’ll see,” DeForestsaid. “They hand him a littlejet sweep and he runs aroundpeople.”

And with Monroe scoringtouchdowns, Brown doesn’thave to fend off so manyquestions about why Mon-roe’s not involved in theoffense.

“D.J. has been a fanfavorite for a long time,”Brown said with a subtle nodto the pestering he’s enduredover the last three years.“Nobody is asking anymorebecause he’s playing well.”

Weis took over for the firedTurner Gill in December. After a less-than-impressivewin over South DakotaState, the Jayhawks blewlate leads against Rice andNorthern Illinois, sand-

wiched around a 20-6 loss toNo. 15 TCU.

Now, Weis is asking hisplayers the same rhetoricalquestion that he offered upto the media who gatheredfor his first press conferenceinside the Anderson Family

Football Complex.“’Here’s them, here’s you.

Why is that?” Weis said.“Both are in Kansas, right? Both are in the same con-ference, right? Both havethe same recruiting base.”

The only difference seems

to be in terms of success. And perhaps, as Weis

pointed out, the guys on thesideline. Snyder has relishednothing more than beatingup on the Jayhawks duringhis time in Manhattan, going16-4 against them, many of

the victories the lopsidedvariety that send fans of bothteams heading home early.

“You get 12 games a sea-son, maybe 13,” Weis said.“That’s 12 times for a com-petitive young guy to reallybe competitive, and that’s 12

out of 365 (days). That’s it.There isn’t any more.

“How could you pass upthe opportunity to do whatyou love to do and be ascompetitive as you love to bein any game that you play? Ithink they all feel that.”

behind the microphone.Instead, it wants nothing

more than a strong season, preferably a championshipseason. Really, it wantsJones to be the quarter-back he’s sometimesproven himself able to be,rather than the quarter-back he’s also provenhimself able to be throughthree games this season.

The new line is an oldline. Jones must let thegame come to him.

“I think sometimes youget mixed up and we wantto push it down the field alittle bit more than youshould,” he said. “I thinkwhat this position is allabout is taking what thedefense gives you regard-less of what down it is orhow long you have to go toget another first down.”

He’s mostly right.Sometimes a play must bemade. Jones’ problem hasbeen trying too hard to makeone when it’s unnecessary. That, and momentarilylosing his mind. But, sure, whatever works.

What Jones really mustknow is it’s all on him.

Bob Stoops can protect

Jones’ confidence as muchas he possibly can, filibustering as he has inthe past about the linehaving to do its job and thereceivers having to do theirjobs and the backs havingto do theirs.

But Jones must recog-nize that for the bluster itis. He’s been here for fivelong years. He saw SamBradford take OU to thenational title game and wina Heisman Trophy. He hasto know that no player canmake a difference the waya fine starting quarterbackcan make a difference.

He’s not been dealt aperfect hand. He lost KevinWilson one season andRyan Broyles the next. Helost Jaz Reynolds and stillhas Kenny Stills.

His two best receiversmay be freshman SterlingShepard and seniortransfer Justin Brown.

He just has to make itwork. That, or be the bestguy out there, draggingeverybody as far as he can.Because it’s all on him.

Jones has to know this.Clay Horning
