SAN JUAN HILLS STALLIONS FOOTBALL 2012
Student Fan Club"e Rough Riders
When ‘San Juan Hills’ was #rst adopted as the name ofCUSD’s 6th high school, many people recalled the story ofTeddy Roosevelt and the Battle of San Juan Hill during theSpanish-American War in 1898. !at battle made famous theheroism of Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders. At thetime, reporter Richard Harding Davis described the RoughRider charge up San Juan Hill:“Colonel Roosevelt, on horseback, broke from the woods behind the line of the Ninth, and #nding its men lying in hisway, shouted: ‘If you don’t wish to go forward, let my men pass, please.’…It was a miracle of self-sacri#ce, a triumph of bulldogcourage, which one watched breathless with wonder.”As we continue to lay the foundations of the traditions atSJHHS, our Stallion Fans will also use the nickname, RoughRiders to represent the values that San Juan Hills #nds important. We are con#dent that the images of the Stallion and theRough Riders will provide vivid symbols which will re%ect acommunity that is committed to providing the best educa-tional, athletic and co-curricular experiences for our kids.“!e credit belongs to the [person] who is actually in thearena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood, whostrives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and again;because there is not e"ort without error and shortcomings; …who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions, whospends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in theend the triumph of high achievement and who at the worst, if he fails, at least he fails while daring greatly. So that his placeshall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat.”
– !eodore Roosevelt
