Based on the experience in the previous year, IQAC consolidated the following action plan, generated through consultations with staff and specific meetings held in different departments:

1. Activities reflecting the goals and objectives of the Institution

Gandhigram Rural Institute carries out activities in all the three dimensions of education, namely, teaching, research and extension. Apart from inclusion of rural aspects in the curriculum, many scholars take up rural issues for research. Research projects are also focused on the rural basic needs and

issues. Extension being the main focus of the institute is being carried out by the students and staff through their outreach activities and programmes which

include Village Placement Programme (VPP) During VPP the entire university moves to the villages stay with villagers for a week, identify and analyze their problems and offer reasonable solutions. Cooperation

• State level advocacy through campaign committee for self-reliant Cooperative Societies Act

• Developed linkages with National Cooperative Union of India and National

Council for Cooperative Training, New Delhi.

Economics • Initiated research in the field of Energy Economics with the assistance of Ministry of Non-conventional Energy Sources

• Awareness generation on livelihood opportunities

• Seven Training Programmes on Skill Development on Bakery Products were organized for 420 women Self Help Group members belong to the districts of Nilgiri and Perambalur.

Sociology

• UGC-MRP on Social Structure and Plight of Girl Child was initiated in selected Districts of Tamil Nadu.

FACULTY OF RURAL ORIENTED SCIENCES

Biology • Department of biotechnology, New Delhi has funded Rs.10.04 lakhs for a major project training on mushroom technology for income generation among SC/ST’s

• Three M.Sc., students’ project in different field of Biology were funded by TNSCST, Chennai

• All the faculty participated and presented research papers in National and International seminars

• National seminar on Rural Biotechnology on Sustainable Environment was conducted

• Infrastructure facility of the Department was increased by adding Gas chromatography and high performance liquid chromatography to enhance research.

Chemistry • Installed defluoridation plans in selected villages of Dindigul District

• Instruments such as FTIR, UV-VIS and Electro chemical work station were commissioned

Computer Science and Applications • Organized Board of Studies Meeting to revise the M.Sc-IT syllabus • On-going research on Image Processing was strengthened.

Home Science • Organized training programmes on health and nutrition

• Studied the problems of village women in the areas of reproductive health care

Physics • Faculty members recorded video presentation on basic electronics and electricity and magnetism;

• A course on renewable energy source was introduced; and • A regional workshop on solar energy system was conducted.

Rural Technology Centre • Conducted training programmes for skilled masons, building supervisors

with the help of HUDCO; • Undertook the construction of model houses using low cost technology

Adult Continuing Education and Extension • Literacy activities were carried out in Melkarai Pudur by organizing 10 continuing education courses and 750 men and women were benefited;

• Skill trainings in income generation activities were conducted in paper bag making, entrepreneurship development, repairing and maintenance of household equipments, preparation of hand made paper, toy making, and

household ornamental articles preparation. 333 men & women were benefited;

• 80 awareness programmes were conducted for knowledge empowerment of women in 51 villages. Women were also empowered with skills for income generation. Fifteen meetings of women SHG’s were conducted;

• GRI got accredited centre status of National Institute of Open Schooling; • Strengthened the pre-school education centres; • Offered counseling services to students and villagers; and • Offered telephone counseling on sex education and AIDS

Rural Development • Organized a Refresher course on Rural Development

FACULTY OF AGRICULTURE AND ANIMAL HUSBANDRY

• Revised the syllabus of one year Post Diploma in commercial Horticulture

once in three years to incorporate need based latest technology in Horticulture and allied fields;

• Organized eight training programmes in watershed management to disseminate the latest technologies, funded by DRDA from various

Districts; • Conducted Midterm Evaluation of V batch DPAP watersheds in different blocks of Thoothukudi district with an outlay of Rs.40,000/-;

• Organised six short term courses on Clean milk production and low cost technology in milk products preparation, sponsored by Ministry of Food Processing Industries, GOI, New Delhi; and

• Started a new PG programme M.Sc. Dairy Science FACULTY OF TAMIL AND INDIAN LANGUAGES

• A book on Devarattam was brought out; and • Two volumes of book on Valar Tamizh Aayvu were brought out

3. Innovations in curricular design and transaction Physics

• Dr.G.Muralidharan and Dr.P.Vickraman, recorded number of half an hour video lectures on “Basic Electronics” and “Electricity Magnetism” at AVRC,

Anna University. These lectures are part of the UGC video lecture series. Dr.Muralidharan recorded 10 more video lectures and Dr.P.Vikraman recorded 7 more video lectures making the total to 37 during 2002-2004. These programmes are now part of the repository with the Centre for Electronic Communication, New Delhi; and

• Few improved devices & systems were fabricated to aid the Research program and the course content of PG Program.

Adult continuing Education and Extension • Short term certificate courses on various skills were introduced.

Applied Research

• The integrated B.Ed. Programme commenced from 2003-04 academic session, offers the scope to prepare competency based teachers for rural schools.

Extension Education

• Initiatives by the department include subject-based extension programmes, field visit, internship, summer placement and exploratory visits to industries, Research and Development Organizations, NGOs,

Corporate office and Government Organizations; • Preparing learning materials on Extension Education for the benefit of the

various students of GRI in 2004; and • Preparing reading materials and record notebooks for the use of VPP campers of GRI.

• Purchased Twenty CDs related to various Crop and Animal Husbandry practices; and

5. Examination reforms implemented

• The institute the first to introduce Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) in

Arts and Science streams in the whole of Tamil Nadu, has successfully implemented CBCS and introduced the internal question setting for UG and PG programmes with external evaluation incorporated for UG programmes and double valuation for PG programmes.

• There are two components of assessments for each course namely, 1) Continuous Formative Assessment (CFA), and 2) End Semester Examination (ESE). CFA is based on the performance in three periodical internal tests while a 50% weightage is given for ESE.

Students in action during Shramdhan

• Students of Adult Continuing Education and Extension involved in Literacy programmes, continuing education programmes, income generation training

programmes, equivalency programmes, supplementary education to school children, organizing and supporting SHG’s, women empowerment, organizing

and conducting children’s clubs, conducting rural libraries etc • Students of Applied Research Department are engaged in taking literacy classes and remedial classes to the rural school students. Periodical Awareness Camp is being conducted on Health, Sanitation and Environment. The students are also engaged in tree planting and imparting computer knowledge to rural school students. Programmes for marginal farmers are also organized.

• Students of Agriculture Faculty involved in the eradication of problem weeds

in the service villages, Promoting solid waste management in service villages, conducted one Animal Health

Camps, planted tree saplings during VPP and NSS camps in appropriate places of the service villages, conducted two campaign on Clean Milk Production and awareness campaign on organic farming practices.

• Department of Chemistry worked on popularization of Science

through street play, jatha, Analysis of Water and effluent

samples from tannery industries. • Dept. of Computer Science established IT enabled Village Information Centre at Aalamarathupatti, to empower the unemployed rural youth through training on computer software.

• Several Computer awareness

programme were conducted for rural children.

• Dept. of Extension Education coordinated Village Placement Programme from 6.10.2003 to 12.10.2003 and from 13.10.2003 to 19.10.2003, in which 1820 students took part. A total of 22 villages were covered under the programme. This VPP enabled the students to relate the classroom learning to field realities.

21. Improvements in the library services

• The Library users were provided with OPAC (On Line Public Access Catalogue) search facility and the Automated Circulation of Books from 15.08.2003.

• The staff and students of the Gandhigram Rural University were issued the Bar-coded Identity Card for the Computerized circulation of Library Books.

• By using the SOUL (Software for University Libraries) software provided by the INFLIBNET Centre, Ahmedabad, the database creation works for Books, Serials, Theses and Dissertations were continued with the financial assistance

of the INFLINET programme. • Computers with UPS were added to the Library. Computerization of library

functions and services were started by using CDS/ISIS Library Automation Software supplied by NISSAT.

• Bound the Books and Journals and revitalized the stock into dynamic collection

Courses in which student assessment of teachers is introduced and the action taken on student feedback • Departmental committee meeting consisting of all the course teachers and students representative from each programme was conducted in each semester and the feed back from the students in respect of improvement of infrastructure and other academic facilities were sent to the academic section

for necessary action. • Immediate feedback is given by the participants of awareness generation,

skill development and continuing education courses. Based on the feedback duration of awareness and skill development programme, were modified. For literacy training the timing of learners was modified.

• Under CBCS, Department committee is constituted in every department. It is

reconstituted every year. A Senior Faculty from other Faculty / Department chairs the meeting by the close of every semester. Student Representatives freely comment on the teaching, references used, teaching aids, guest lectures, field visits etc

• Alumni meet, conducted on the eve of convocation every year, also provides an opportunity for the students to give feedback on curriculum and teachers.

• The vacuum due to the non existence of registered Parent Teacher Association is filled up by various other measures.

• A small segment of students hail from nearby rural areas where our Faculty frequently visit during extension programmes. Parents of these wards provide the extension team with full cooperation and support in organizing village camps, conducting surveys and other activities.

33. Health Services • The Kasturiba Hospital, Gandhigram with 200 beds facility supports GRU in

the health care. • This Hospital is part of the Parent Organization namely Gandhigram Trust.

• The Service of the doctors and other health personnel are made available round the clock for staff, students and other residents.

• The Dept. of Physical Education offered a foundation course on “Sports and Games” to first year undergraduate students.

• Offered a course in Physical Education, Health and Yoga to B.Ed

programme students and Third year Gandhian Thought students

• Offered training and coaching students in various sport and games

• Conducted summer coaching camps for men and women students in Volleyball and Basketball

• Faculty has constant interaction with the students and provides counseling

and guidance regularly, especially at crucial moments • Gurukula system practiced by GRI enables each Faculty to closely monitor

and guide a small team of students with individual attention. • In addition, the Students counseling / Placement and Career Guidance unit, attached to Dept. of ACE & E serves students of High School and rural Youth,

• Besides, the GRI students through students clubs the career guidance programmes organized.

• Dr.M.G.Sethuraman, Reader in Chemistry organized a one day workshop on how to prepare for a career interview during the second week of September 2003.

• The Dept. of Gandhian Thought offers counseling services to the students of GRI.

• Placement Bureau registers interested students for personality development and placement.

• Campus interview is arranged every year for students of various streams. • Corporate, IT firms, NGOs, Funding agencies, Teacher Training Institutes and Schools avail the services of the Bureau.

• GRI being a Gandhian Institution imparts value based education • The day at Gandhigram begins with an inter religious prayer • The Friday prayer where the community assembles is another healthy practice

• The Gurukula system, wherein, the students are attached to a guru, who solves many of the issues regarding the problems faced by them.

• The Departmental committee which meets twice in a semester takes into account the views of the students on various academic and administrative

matters with reference to their curriculum and comforts. • The student representative elected to the senate, voices the views of the student and thus student participation in the running of the Institute is ensured

• The Village Placement Programme, the unique feature of the rural university, imparts values and social responsibilities to the students. Further VPP functions as gateway through which the students, staff and scholars gets the first hand knowledge on the problems of the rural people. The stakeholders

response through VPP helps the institute to reorient and reshape its policies and strategies to bring about holistic change in the rural scenario.

• Rural Agricultural Work Experience (RAWE) was included in the curriculum for Diploma in Agriculture with 4 credits

• Student’s farmer enterprise • Many departments offer annual intercollegiate meet to sharpen and shape the academic and managerial skills of the students.
