Gear designThe gear is of single stage type for drive by diesel engine via a flexible coupling or electric motor drive.

HousingGrey cast-iron. The oil sump is integrally cast. Also available with nodular cast-iron, cast steel or welded housings. The base of the housing can be adapted to the ship’s structure.

Owing to the torsionally rigid construction, with strong internal ribs, elevated temperatures cannot impair the accuracy of tooth engagement. Special care has been taken to minimise vibrations and to avoid resonant surfaces.

BearingsAll shafts are supported by serviceable plain bearings conforming to DIN 7474. The bonding power of the white metal with the supporting shells of low-carbon steel attains values up to the tensile strength of the white metal. All bearings are lubricated and cooled with fresh oil. They operate within the hydrodynamic lubrication range.

Thrust bearingsMichel thrust bearings form integral parts of the gear unit. The bearing shoes for forward travel can be inspected and replaced through a patented aperture. To replace the shoes for reverse travel it is necessary to remove the thrust bearing cover. The thrust bearing chamber is permanently filled with oil, even if the oil supply system is not in operation.

Gearing systemAll gear-wheels and gear rims consist of highly wear-resistant case-hardened alloy steels. The involute helical gearing with optimal computer-controlled addendum modification in accordance with the latest scientific findings is case-hardened and ground. Owing to its high capacity it has been possible to achieve compact, low-weight gear unit designs.

Cooling and filtrationAchieved with the aid of a sea water proof oil cooler mounted on the gearbox housing and a separate double filter with a secondary magnetic filtration system. The cooler uses sea water with temperatures up to 32°C. Higher cooling water temperatures and coolers for brackish water or fresh water are available on request.

TubingComplete tubing to connect the attached pump, the oil cooler, the double filter and the appropriate fittings with all gear connection points are provided. The internal suction and spray tubes have outer flanges and can be checked without dismantling the gear unit. The suction tube fitting for the pump is provided above the bottom of the gear unit, in a readily accessible position. The line leading to the starting and standby pump and the cooling water supply lines are not included with the gear unit.

Gearbox input shaftWith cylindrical stub shaft, the length of which is adapted to the coupling. If required, input shafts can be supplied for flange mounting or with an air hole for connection to a clutch.

Gearbox output shaftSupplied with a flange, the diameter of which depends on the gear size and can, on request, be enlarged. A borehole for taking control linkage for controllable pitch propeller can also be added, together with possibility of mounting the adjustment box alternatively oil supply box.

Protection of gearboxOuter coat RAL 9005 or 9017.

Inner coat 13 AL 3000, fire red.

Internal protection by oil used in testing.

Instruments and valves1 thermometer before double filter 1 thermometer after cooler 1 pressure gauge before double filter 1 pressure gauge after cooler 1 non-return valve after integral pump 1 check valve after external pump 1 pressure relief valve before double filter 1 suction valve on suction tube of external pump

We are prepared to provide the gear units with all transducer instruments required for operation in accordance with the regulations of the relevant classification societies. Other instruments and fittings can also be provided as required.

Spare parts for coastal- or ocean-going vessels in accordance with the regulations of the classification societies and the table below.

Secondary PTO systems are available on request.

HSU/HSN single stage marine gearboxes Lubrication and cooling

The integral gear pump normally supplies the gearing and the bearings with oil. The system is so designed as to ensure that sufficient oil is supplied even if the engine idles. Drive is via pump gearing and gearbox input shaft.

The independent pump, driven by an electric motor, is used to start the gearbox and as a reserve pump

A suction filter valve on the suction line of the integral pump ensures that the lines are always filled with oil even when the system is inoperative.

Before it reaches the cooler the oil is cleaned by a double filter with a secondary magnetic filtration system. The double filter is readily accessible and can be cleaned even while the gear unit is in operation.

A pressure relief valve in the line leading to the double filter ensures that the lubricating oil pressure cannot rise above a certain value. The integral gear pump and the free standing starting and reserve pump are separated by means of check valves.

The integral pump, the oil cooler, the double filter and the appropriate fittings are connected by tubes to all gearbox connection points. The internal suction and spray lines have outer flanges and can be checked without dismantling the gear unit. The suction tube connection for the integral pump is located just above the bottom of the gear unit, in a readily accessible position.

We supply all connecting lines, shown in the diagram by full and chain-dotted lines, but not the suction and pressure oil fittings for the starting and reserve pump.

One thermometer and one pressure gauge are provided both upstream of the double filter and behind the oil cooler so as to enable visual monitoring of the oil pressure and temperature.

We are prepared to provide the gear units with any monitoring instrument required for maintenance-free operation according to the regulations of the classification society concerned. Other instruments and sensors can also be installed, if required.

Thrust bearings Aperture for inspection of thrust bearings (German and foreign patents) Types HSU/HSN

With the Gamesa Gearbox marine-gears series HSU/HSN the propeller thrust block is fully integrated with the gear unit housing thus contributing to the exceptional rigidity and strength of the housing. In conjunction with our one-flange tilting pad thrust bearing (system Michell) the system ensures a high degree of safety and reliability. Thanks to continuous oil lubrication during operation the bearing works perfectly in both directions of rotation. The oil supply and discharge system is so designed that the housing of the thrust bearing remains filled with oil even if the oil supply system is inoperative.

Our special aperture for inspection of the thrust bearing permits rapid, easy removal of the thrust bearing pads for ahead travel. The design and construction features of this mechanism have been

patented by TACKE. Its mode of operation and its main characteristics can be seen in the above drawing. The main advantage of this system consists in the ready accessibility of the pads, a point of great importance for inspection and servicing. This is a time and cost saving arrangement since it is unnecessary to remove the housing cover. All models of series HSU/HSN are equipped with this system.

The thrust bearings shoes for ahead travel can be removed as follows:

The cover of the inspection aperture has a retaining element on the inside, which holds the pads in position and keeps them from turning. Removal of the cover exposes the first pad, which can be withdrawn for inspection. The remaining pads can be removed only

with the aid of a tappet, which is supplied together with the gear unit. A thread hole is provided in the periphery of the flange to enable the tappet retaining screw to be fitted. By turning the shaft the remaining shoes can be moved one by one into the aperture and then withdrawn.

The procedure is reversed when it comes to reassembling the pads. At this stage the tappet helps to position each pad. The pad with the retaining pin should be fitted last. When the aperture is closed this pin must engage the retaining element on the inside of the cover in order to secure the entire set of pads.

The pads for astern travel, which are used relatively rarely, can be inspected after removal of the two-part thrust bearing cover.
