At times, students were denied visa for further studies though they had earlier visited the country as tourists. Some said there was resentment among travelers due to the interview sessions which tend to be a bit personal. US consular officials tried to allay fears, saying such instances are stray cases. “ We process almost 1,500 applicants a day. So, it depends on how the applicants are able to convince the visa officer the genuineness of his proposed visit. There have been instances where applicants have fudged data,” said a consular officer. NEW DELHI: Fight againstterrorism is the fourth world war andIndia has been on the frontlines ofthis, Indiaʼs newly-elected PresidentPranab Mukherjee said July 25while hailing the valor of the Indianarmed forces.

Taking oath as President, he saida few minutes of peace will achievefar more than many years of war.

“But the visible rewards of peacehave also obscured the fact that theage of war is not over. We are inthe midst of a fourth world war; thethird was the Cold War, but it wasvery warm in Asia, Africa and LatinAmerica till it ended in the 1990s,”said the President, who is also theSupreme Commander of the ArmedForces.

“The war against terrorism is thefourth; and it is a world war becauseit can raise its evil head anywhere

in the world,” the President said inhis acceptance speech in theCentral Hall of Parliament.

India has been on the frontlinesof this war long before many otherrecognized its vicious depth orpoisonous consequences, he said.

“I am proud of the valor, conviction and steely determinationof our armed forces as they havefought this menace on our borders;of our brave police forces as theyhave met the enemy within; and ofour people, who have defeated theterrorist trap by remaining calm inthe face of extraordinaryprovocation,” Mukherjee said.

Noting that the people of Indiahave been “a beacon of maturitythrough the trauma of whiplashwounds”, he reminded those whoinstigate violence and perpetuatehatred that “a few minutes of peace

will achieve far more than manyyears of war”.

“India is content with itself, anddriven by the will to sit on the hightable of prosperity. It will not bedeflected in its mission by noxiouspractitioners of terror,” the Presidentsaid.

Pranab Mukherjee was sworn inas the countryʼs 13th President onJuly 25, 2012 at a special ceremonyin the Central Hall of IndiaʼsParliament in New Delhi.

Chief Justice of India SH Kapadiaadministered the oath toMukherjee at 11:30 am in thepresence of Vice President HamidAnsari, Prime Minister ManmohanSingh, Lok Sabha Speaker MeiraKumar, UPA chairperson SoniaGandhi, Union ministers,Governors, chief ministers and ahost of dignitaries.

WASHINGTON: Indian ITcompanies supported as many as280,000 jobs in the Unitd States ofAmerica last year amid a gloomyemployment scenario in the US andhave invested a over $5 billion inforeign direct investment (FDI)through acquisitions and green-fieldprojects, said Indiaʼs Ambassador tothe US here on July 26, 2012.

Addressing the Asia Society,Ambassador Nirupama Rao said,“Our IT companies supported280,000 jobs in the US last year.“The IT companies have investedmore than 5 billion dollars in FDIthrough acquisitions and green-fieldprojects.”

“The unemployment rate in thetech-space in this country is much

lower than in manufacturing andthat is where the effort isconcentrated we believe today —to get back jobs in manufacturingin this country,” she said.

Acknowledging that Indiaʼs tradeand economic relationship with theUS has not scaled the heightsreached in US trade and economicties with China, she said there aregoals yet to be achieved.

“The voices of Indian companiesand business interests are oftenunheard in the audio stream ofvoices from the US side who areconstantly urging India to ̒ do moreʼon the reform front,” she said.

In this crescendo from theAmerican side, is the politicaleconomy and anthropology of

India understood sufficiently? sheasked. “There is no question of thetide of economic reform in Indiabeing reversed.”

“Look at the history of reform inIndia from 1991 onwards.Successive governments havecome and gone, but the direction ofreform has not been reversed, ever,” she said.

“Do not take us at face value. When the chips are down, oursystem responds very well. As ourPrime Minister told SecretaryClinton when they met in Delhi inMay, “the message I would like youto carry is that Indiaʼs climate (ofreform) will not be disrupted.” TheIndia Story is definitely not over, theAmbassador said. LONDON: Over two decadesafter Satanic Verses sparked anever-ending controversy andprovoked a ʻfatwaʼ for his head, author Salman Rushdie has onlyone thing to say to his detractors:ʻI did not write it for the mullahsʼ.

The India-born controversialwriter who has lived for yearsunder the shadow of his 1988book, now liberally jokes aboutthe whole issue.

Speaking at the Hay Festival ofLiterature and the Art in Waleslast month, the 64-year-oldauthor said books are intendedfor people who like them.

Joking about the ʻfatwaʼ issueduring an interaction, he said hedid not write it “for the mullahs. Ididnʼt think they were my targetaudience”.

“The only thing worse than abad review from the AyatollahKhomeini would be a good reviewfrom the Ayatollah Khomeini,” heremarked.

The author, who is best knownfor his memorable Bookerwinning novel ʻMidnightʼsChildrenʼ, said the reason whybooks endure is not that peopledislike them or that there is acontroversy around them.

Satanic VersesWasnʼt written

for Mullahs,Says Rushdie

“The reason why books endureis because there are enoughpeople who like them. Itʼs theonly reason why books last. Itʼsthe people who love books thatmake them last, not the peoplewho attack them”.

Satanic Verses had sparkedwidespread outrage amongMuslims and even led to AyatollahRuhollah Khomeini, the SupremeLeader of Iran, issuing a fatwacalling for Rushdieʼs death in1989.

However, controversy over thebook has never died down. InJanuary this year, Rushdieʼspresence at Indiaʼs mostprestigious literature festival inJaipur was objected upon by asection of people, preventing himfrom making it to the event.

Later, in the well-attendedinteraction, he said: “I donʼt readmy books, I write them. Once Iʼvefinished the many years it usuallytakes me to write them, I canʼtbear to read them, because Iʼvespent too long with them already.Iʼm not advertising them very well,am I?”

WASHINGTON: Tulsi Gabbard, who trailed behind hernearest rival by over 40 points a few months ago in the racefor the Congressional seat from Honolulu, has now taken anarrow but crucial lead of five points in the latest polls, brightening prospects for the first Hindu to be elected to theUS House of Representatives.

In a dramatic turnaround, 31-year-old Tulsi has eclipsedMufi Hannemann and is now the frontrunner in the race tosucceed Representatives Mazie Hirono in House, said theprestigious Mellman Group, releasing its latest round ofopinion polls.

The seat became vacant as Hirono has opted to run for theUS senate this year.

Ahead of the Democratic primary election in Hawaiiʼssecond congressional district on August 11, Tulsi, a Honolulucity council woman, now holds a five-point lead overHannemann, former Honolulu mayor — 37% for Tulsi and32% from Hannemann, said the Mellman Group. “Thisrepresents a sea change in the race since our previous poll, conducted in April, where Hannemann led Tulsi by 26 points.

Indeed, Tulsiʼs share of the vote has increased 21 points, while Hannemann has actually shed 10 points in the last threemonths,” the group said.

A confident Tulsi says she is on her way to victory, thoughshe conceded that it would be a close race. Proud of herHindu religion, she is not an Indian nor of Indian heritage. Her father Mike Gabbard is currently Hawaii state senatorand mother Carol Porter Gabbard is an educator and businessowner.

Currently, a Company Commander with the Hawaii ArmyNational Guard, who has volunteered to serve on twodeployments to the Middle East, Tulsi was Hawaiiʼs youngeststate representative in 2002 and is the youngest woman inthe USA to be elected to such a position. The turnaroundhas raised prospects of her being elected to the House.

Tulsi Gabbard: First Hinduin Race for US House

WASHINGTON: A record number of Indian-Americans- at least 12 - are in the fray for the November 2012polls vying for a place in the House of Representatives, reflecting the serious effort of this fastest growing ethniccommunity in the US to politically empower itself. Cutting across party lines, these Indian-Americancandidates are spread all over the country - with twoeach from California and Michigan. CongressmanHansen Clare, who is half Indian, is seeking re-electionfrom Michigan, while another candidate Tulsi Gabbard,a Hindu, is receiving massive support from Indian-Americans. The inspiration for them comes from the success oftwo rising stars of the Republican party, Nikki Haley(governor of South Carolina) and Bobby Jindal(governor of Louisiana). A majority of the Indian-American candidates are running for the Congress onDemocratic Party tickets.

WORK an hour. Helping empower Asha by work an hour is a small way to make ahuge difference in the lives of unprivileged children in India. It’s donating anhour’s worth of your pay. All its takes is an hour’s pay to make a huge difference

Work An Hour (WAH) 2012 is an online campaign that runs from July through September.During this time, donors can contribute an hour’s worth of their pay towards a project orprojects chosen by their local Asha chapter.

The Team Asha-Cleveland is taking up a project called IASER (Indian Association forthe Special Education and Rehabilitation). The main motto of this project is to not letsightlessness be a hindrance to education. Project IASER aims at ensuring access toquality print literature to the blind readers. So far, the project was aimed at making booksavailable to the blind readers who are proficient in the English language.

Now with the help of WAH contributions, we plan to expand it to produce e-text forHindi- medium students who form the majority of the student population in North India. This would specifically entail expanding the activities of the project to make books availablein Hindi to cater to the needs of a vast number of blind readers in North India, makingthem independent and helping them advance in their respective careers.

The process of transforming text books needs technology such as the OCR (opticalcharacter recognition) software to transform print to e text. Further, computing and scanningabilities, basic office supplies and an office space is necessary for this project. The fundscollected from the WAH initiative will be utilized towards building this infrastructure andallow for quality transformation into e-text books for the blind readers.

The project will be supervised by Jagdish (Jags) Chander. Jagdish also happens to beblind. He is a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) of Political Science at Hindu College,University of Delhi. Jagdish recently graduated with a doctoral degree in Disability Studiesfrom Syracuse University in Syracuse, New York. Jagdish, in his recent visit to Cleveland,Ohio, shared his plans for the future and hoped that the funds collected from this initiativewill be instrumental towards further expanding this project. You may send in your checks addressed to (memo: Work an Hour 2012):Asha For Education, c/o International Students Office Tomlinson Hall 143, Case Western Reserve University10900 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland OH 44106Or visit our website: www.ashanet.org/cleveland

NEW DELHI: It could be anew measure of womenʼsemancipation or just apassing fad, but Delhi Policehas been stumped by thehuge number of workingwomen seeking gun licenses.

The trend is partly aresponse to the cityʼslawlessness but may alsoreflect the growing need ofwomen to be in control, claimsenior officers.

In the past two years, Delhicops have received over 900applications for guns fromwomen. While year the 2010saw around 320 applications, the figure had grown toaround 500 in 2011. But itʼsnot only the numbers thatʼs abreak from the past. Thereʼsa change as well in thereasons cited by women forbearing arms.

“Women earlier mostlycited the inheritance clause -saying their fathers orhusbands had a licensewhich they want to continueholding. Many womenapplying under this clausewere proxies for men whothemselves would not havegot a license.

But of late women are citingʻself-defenseʼ to apply for alicense,” said an officer in thelicensing department.

In general, 20-22% of allapplicants are now women.

The officer said 27 licenseswere issued to women in2010. Of these, 17 werethose who had applied underthe inheritance clause. In2011, 33 women weregranted gun licenses, 12 of

Delhi Women Gun for Arms Licences

whom had cited self-defenseas a reason.

Till July this year, fivewomen have been grantedlicenses on the basis ofpersonal threats and six onthe inheritance clause. In2010 and 2011, over 600rejected applications wererejected as no “personalsafety threat was assessed”.

Rajya Sabha MP RenukaChaudhry, herself a gunlicense holder, was recentlyquoted as saying that womenneed guns more than men“who flaunt the weapons atweddings”.

Mridula Nandy, whounsuccessfully attempted toget a license last year, expresses a similar view.

“They kept on asking whatdo I have to fear. Well, I stayin a place where I am tauntedon the roads. At night, I feelunsafe. I will not necessarilyfire at someone but a gunboosts confidence,” she said.

Interestingly, even asIndian shooters are doingreasonably well at theOlympic Games baggingsilver and a bronze, somewomen are also applying forgun licenses to pursue sport.

While two women weregranted license under thesports quota, the numberdoubled in 2011. This year, three women have alreadybeen granted licenses forpursuing shooting.

In general, police areaccused of being too strictwhile granting womenlicenses, with the age oldinheritance clause still beingthe surest way of acquiring alicense. Some allege “arecommendation from ahigher up” is crucial insecuring a license.

Cops deny the charges, claiming the criteria for bothsexes remain the same.

“We grant licenses on threeaccounts. We check whetherthe woman has to travelalone at night, whether sheis being stalked or harassedor whether she visits a crime-prone area,” said a seniorpolice officer.

He added, “India cannot beseen as a state that promotesguns, unlike some westernnations. We will ask everyoneto go through the necessarychecks and balances.” (TNN)

IN one of the worldʼsworst power blackoutsever, more than 600

million people across Indialost electricity on July 31,the second massive gridfailure in two days, raisingquestions whether thegovernmentʼs failure tomodernize and bolster itsenergy delivery system hadfinally left the nation at thebreaking point.

Rail service was halted, streets were clogged atintersections with darkenedtraffic lights, and peoplesweltered without airconditioning in temperaturesabove 90°F (32°C), asauthorities worked to restorepower and pinpoint the causeof the problem.

The outage that began July30 lasted 15 hours, and onlyshortly after service wasrestored, at 1 p.m. July 31, afar larger system collapseswept across the nationʼsnorthern and eastern grids.

The government quicklyannounced it would appointa three-member panel tostudy the causes of themassive failure and submit areport within 15 days. Butobservers have long warnedthat India faces a majorenergy challenge, with itseconomy growing at a rate ofabout 9 percent annually, while 56 percent ofhouseholds in rural India—some 400 million people—have no access to electricityat all.

Delhiʼs plunge intodarkness was not unusual—even the largest, mostdeveloped of Indiaʼs citieshave power shortages andrely on massive diesel-fueledgenerators for power backup.

But the duration of theoutages and their geographicextent were unprecedented. And with per capita energyconsumption expected todouble by 2020, India needsurgently to generate morepower and deliver it moreefficiently.

But the government hasfaced public opposition andspiraling costs for both of thesources on which it hoped tofuel its energy future: nuclearpower and coal.

Nuclear PlansDelayed

Distribution of energyresources is a contentiousissue in India. Critics oftenargue that the bulk of the newpower in India goes to theupper middle class andgrowing wealthy class in theform of big shopping malls

and air-conditioned housesand offices. India also has ahigh rate of electricity lossdue to theft and inefficienttransmission and distribution. As much as 40 percent of thepower generated in India isnot paid for. The bulk of it isstolen.

India has long planned tobuild the worldʼs largestnuclear power plant near theport of Jaitapur on its westcoast. The government saidnuclear energy—which canprovide a large amount ofenergy without carbonemissions—is necessary forcurbing growth ofgreenhouse gas emissions.

But the $9.3 billion nuclearproject at Jaitapur, some 400kilometers (250 miles) southof the commercial capital ofMumbai, became a target forprotest after the FukushimaDaiichi disaster in Japan lastyear.

The project is one of thefirst sites where Paris-basedAREVA plans to introduce itsnew generation ofpressurized reactors calledEvolutionary Power Reactors(EPR).

Its extra containment andindependent backup coolingsystems are seen asimportant safety advances, but local environmentalistsraised concerns on the risk tothe fishing and agriculturalcommunities nearby.

Amid the sometimes violentprotests over the plant, negotiations on the projectslowed. Areva has said it

expects to reach a final dealwith India by yearʼs end.

Coal CostChallenges

India is also facingunexpected challenges in itsmassive plan for coal powerexpansion. Coal providesroughly 70 percent of Indiaʼselectricity, and thegovernmentʼs most recentplan called for coal to providefor 75 percent of newlyinstalled capacity.

Tata, Indiaʼs giantconglomerate and largestprivate electric utility, hasbeen building what it hopeswill be one of the largest coalpower plants in the world, the4,000-megawatt TataMundra, in Gujarat State, 500miles (805 kilometers)northwest of Mumbai.

But the Tata Mundra projecthas brought to light a harshnew reality: Coal power is nolonger looking like cheappower.

Although India hasseemingly abundant coalreserves, the low-quality,high-ash fuel causesproblems when itʼs used instate-of-the-art power plants.Instead, companies like Tataare looking overseas for coal, and import prices have beenrising steadily.

Tataʼs chief executiveofficer says Tata Mundrawonʼt be financially viableunless it gets a hefty rateincrease to offset the soaringprices of imported Indonesiancoal.

This month, Standard &Poorʼs lowered its outlook on

Tata Power from stable tonegative because of a loan-covenant breach on itsMundra project, which is onlypartly completed. Coal pricesalready have tripled fromTataʼs initial projections in2006, according to a report bythe Sierra Club.

The Association of PowerProducers, which representsmore than 20 private powercompanies in India, recentlyestimated that more than 50power projects accounting for68,000 megawatts ofcapacity were at the risk offinancial default.

Indian Prime MinisterManmohan Singh earlier thisyear established amultiministerial committee totackle the severe financialchallenges facing the coalsector.

And in the short term, thegovernmentʼs response tothe industryʼs financial woeshas been to direct state-owned Coal India toguarantee coal supplies topower producers at lowerprices. But those suppliesgenerally are of low qualitywith high ash content.

Meanwhile, Indiaʼs coalmines have become a frontline in the energy crisis nowfacing the nation, as thepower outages strandedhundreds of minersunderground, with electric-powered pulleys idled.

Renewable Possibilities

Some experts have urgedIndia to focus more heavily onrenewable energy. Solar

power now is less expensivethan burning diesel for thefirst time in India, accordingto a recent Bloomberg newsreport based on its NewEnergy Finance data. It notedthat the potential of solarpower had caused billionaireSunil Mittal to invest heavilyin that market.

Daniel Kammen, director ofthe Renewable andAppropriate EnergyLaboratory at the Universityof California, Berkeley, andadviser to NationalGeographicʼs Great EnergyChallenge initiative, saysIndiaʼs wind resource hasnow been reassessed to bea whopping 30 times largerthan previously thought.

Although the country hasmade strides in solar, smallhydroelectric plants, and windfarms, renewable energyoverall plays a minor role inIndiaʼs energy portfolio.

For now, the focus will berestoring power and findingthe root causes of theoutages. But in the long term, experts say the worldʼs fourthlargest energy consumer willneed to find a way to bolsterits supply and modernize itsdelivery.

Even on the best days, thenation has a chronicelectricity-supply shortfall ofabout 15 percent during peakdemand hours. And theUnited Nations estimates thatIndia, now with 1.2 billionpeople, will overtake Chinaas the most populous nationby 2025.

THE 1927 Rail MotorCar that had beenchugging through a

Out of four such rail cars, which were made between1927 and 1930 by the British, this was the last to run on theShimla tracks that offer apanoramic visual feast totourists flocking to the stateround the year.

“The wheels were givingway due to wear and tear. Wehad first tried to introducecast wheels but were not ableto get any manufacturer inIndia,” PK Sanghi, divisionalrailway manager (Ambala),told TOI.

The Kalka-Shimla rail track— a triumph of engineeringmarvel — has alwaysmanaged to recreate the oldworld charm associated withjourneys on mountainrailways.

The car, along with threeother trains — ShivalikDeluxe, Himalayan Queen,Kalka-Shimla passenger —reached its destination in 4hours and 25 minutes, passing through 864 bridges,102 tunnels and at least 900sharp curves and turns.

According to the IndianRailways Catering andTourism Corporation(IRCTC), which managed thecarʼs charter bookings, thecar remained a strongfavorite with foreigners andIndians.

“Unfortunately, we had tostop the charter booking fourmonths ago when IndianRailways told us about theproblem,” IRCTC publicrelation officer told TOI.

The car was fitted with atransparent fibre-glass roof, offering a view of the skies. There were even facilities, including digital time-cum-temperature display unit, TV/VCP, and a music system.

The Indian Railways havenow begun a search to bringthe rail car back on tracks.“We have floated a tender forthe replacement of wheelsand other parts,” said Sanghi.

Dear Auntie,My parents are from India, but I was born here. I am ajunior in high school and agood student. Since Istarted high school I havehad a crush on one of myAmerican classmates. Herecently asked me to juniorprom, and I really want togo, but I know that myparents wonʼt approve. What should I do?SincerelyAnxious

Dear Anxious,All parents love theirchildren and want toprotect them, even whenthe children donʼt want tobe protected. So recognizethat your parents havegood intentions. Dating can be acomplicated issue forparents and children tonavigate, but opencommunication, trust, andcompromise can makenavigating this difficultterrain easier for bothparents and their children. First, fear of the unknowncan be intimidating.Introducing yourclassmate to your parentsmight help put them atease. Second, if you have afamily friend whose son ordaughter is planning ongoing to the dance, then tryto double date so yourparents are a little morecomfortable with thisarrangement. Third, talk to your parentsabout prom and set amutually agreed curfewtime. Finally, as hard as thismay seem, if your parentsare still uncomfortable,

then instead of gettingangry just accept yourparentsʼ decision gracefully. You may get a betterresponse the next timearound havingdemonstrated your maturity.

Dear Auntie,I came from India as agraduate student, met andmarried an American, andam now settled in Ohio. My husband and I arehappily expecting our firstchild in November. My in-laws are wonderful, buthave a lot of difficultypronouncing Hindi words(they can barely pronouncemy name!). My in-laws and myhusband would prefer togive our child an Americanfirst name. My husbandthinks it will give our childan advantage in theprofessional world. My parents, on the otherhand, very much want ourchild to have an Indianname. What should I do?SincerelyMJ.

Dear MJ,A happy and meaningfulmarried life is comprisedof mutual understanding, respect, communication, and compromise. First of all, you and yourhusband should have aclear understanding aboutthese matters. You can tryconvincing him byexpressing your desire topass on your heritage toyour child by giving her orhim an Indian first namesince your child will havean American last nameanyway. If this does not work out, then try giving either anIndian name sounding likean American name or anIndian middle name toyour child, so you andyour parents feelcomfortable calling him/her by that name. This should be a goodcompromise andeveryone should feel atease.

A new study hasfound that peoplewho wake up early

are slimmer, happier andhealthier than those whoget up later in the day.

Researchers at theRoehampton Universityconcluded that those whofight the urge to ignore thealarm clock completemorning chores faster, pack their children off toschool earlier and thrive inthe workplace.

However, night owlshave a higher chance of

feeling depressed orstressed and becomingoverweight.

The researchersquizzed 1,068 adultsabout their health andsleeping habits and foundthat ̒ morning peopleʼ wereout of bed by 6.58 am onaverage, while ʻeveningpeopleʼ waited until 8.54am to start their day.

At the weekend bothgroups enjoyed about anextra hour under thecovers, with early riserswaiting until 7.47 am to get

up and night owls lying inuntil 10.09 am.

“There are morningpeople and eveningpeople, and morningpeople tend to be healthierand happier as well ashaving lower body massindices,” the Telegraphquoted Dr. Joerg Huber astelling a BritishPsychological Societyconference. The surveyalso found that peoplewho watch a lot oftelevision are more likelyto skip breakfast. (ANI)

IFyou think you donʼt needto work out just becauseyouʼre slim and trim at 25,

think again. A new studyshows that people who starta regular fitness regimen intheir 20s and stick with it intotheir 30s and 40s experienceless middle age spread.

The study, published in theJournal of the AmericanMedical Association, foundthat starting exercise early inlife is especially good forwomen. Women whomaintain a high intensity, regular fitness routine fromtheir 20s onward gain 13fewer pounds than womenwho are inactive or who areinconsistent in their exerciseroutines.

The new research comesout of NorthwesternUniversity Feinberg School ofMedicine and was headed byDr. Arlene Hankinson, instructor of preventivemedicine. Her teamʼsresearch followed theexercise patterns of morethan 3,500 men and women, ages 18 to 30 at baseline, over the course of 20 years.

Start Working Out in Your20s to Stay Fit in Middle Age

For the purposes of thestudy, Hankinson said herteam defined “high intensity”exercise as exercise of highfrequency and duration for atleast 150 minutes per week, which is in keeping withfederal guidelines forexercising at least 30 minutesfive days a week. “We foundthat 25 minutes of exerciseevery day is better atmaintaining weight than 45minutes a day once inawhile,” Hankinson says.

So what if youʼre 35 or 45and youʼve never engaged inregular exercise? Is it too lateto start to see a benefit?

Hankinson says that whileher study only looked atpeople who startedexercising in youngadulthood, she wouldcertainly encourage anyoneof any age to get moving.

“Itʼs not that there are fewerbenefits of activity when youstart late,” she explains. “Itʼsthat the amount of activity youhave to do may increase.”

Are there any forms ofexercise that are better thanothers?

“The kind of exercise Irecommend is the kind youwould actually do,”Hankinson said. She pointsout that you can get a lot ofbang for your buck fromrunning because it doesnʼtrequire any special skills orequipment but that a lot ofpeople dislike running orcanʼt do it once they get older.

She recommends findingsome kind of physical activityyou enjoy, whether it ʼsdancing or gardening, andthen doing it regularly to stayfit.

Hankinson hopes herresearch will add yet anotherdimension to curbing theobesity crisis in America. While many previous studieshave focused on usingexercise to lose weight, herslooks at using exercising toprevent weight gain.

“This study reflects achange in the directionpeople are taking in theirapproach to obesity,”Hankinson says. “Preventionof weight gain is somethingthat should get a lot moreattention.”

Laughter is the shock absorber that eases the blows of life

The London Olympicsare finally here, and ifyouʼre like me, youʼre

eager to get answers to someburning questions —questions such as: Who willwin the gold medal insynchronized underwatertable tennis?

Who will finish higher onthe medal table — thePeopleʼs Republic of Koreaor Michael Phelps? Who willwin the gold medal in menʼsbasketball — the talentedteam from America or thewell-coached squad from theUnited States?

Everyone has at least oneor two questions that theLondon Olympics will answer. My wife, for example, has thisquestion: “When will this darnthing be over so my husbandcan do somethingproductive?” What shedoesnʼt realize, of course, isthat watching athletes winmedals inspires us to setgoals and achieve them. Mygoal is to get off the couch atleast once a day. The rest ofthe time, Iʼm going to beglued to the TV, trying to getall my questions answered. Here are just five of them:

London Olympics Will Answer Many Questions1. Will Bangladesh win its

first Olympic medal? The richcountries dominate theOlympics — they can affordto spend more on athleticprograms — so itʼs notsurprising that Bangladesh,an impoverished country of152 million, has yet to win asingle medal. But Iʼm hopingthat the four members ofBangladeshʼs Olympic team— an archer, a gymnast, ashooter and a swimmer —can go home with at least onebronze medal, which wouldbe an amazing achievement, especially if they can do itwithout leaving anyfingerprints behind.

2. How many times will weget to see Kate Middletonand will it be enough? PrinceWilliamʼs wife, the Duchess ofCambridge, plans to attendseveral events, much to thedelight of the British public. Many of them havedownloaded her officialOlympic schedule to theiriPhones, as well as theschedule of her cardboardcutout. Most people just canʼt

get enough of her. In fact,Indian wrestler Sushil Kumarbelieves she will help him wina gold medal. Just beforepinning each of hisopponents, he plans toshout, “Oh look, thereʼsKate!” He knows howeffective this strategy can be.At the 2008 Beijing Olympics,he beat American DougSchwab by shouting, “Ohlook, thereʼs Elvis!”

3. Will the Saudi womenmake their compatriots feelproud? Under pressure fromthe International OlympicCommittee (IOC), SaudiArabia has sent femaleathletes to the Olympics forthe first time. Wodjan AliSeraj Abdulrahim Shahrkhaniwill compete in judo, whileSarah Attar will compete inthe 800m race. Attar will tryto win a medal while wearing

a headscarf and loose-fitting,full-body attire. According toSaudi officials, the outfit mayadd a few seconds to her timeon the track, but many yearsto her time on Earth.

4. Will the United Statesfinally win a medal inbadminton? It may surpriseyou to learn that the US hasnever won an Olympic medalin badminton, despite the factthat at almost every familypicnic in America, you will seeAunt Hilda hitting a shuttle upin the air toward Uncle Milton. The shuttle usually gets stuckin a tree and the familyspends the rest of theafternoon throwing objects atit, including four rackets, twopoles and a net, which alsoget stuck in the tree.

(This may explain why theaverage American isnʼt goodat hitting shuttles, but isextremely good at throwing.)

The entire badminton kitcosts only $9.99 at Wal-Mart,thanks to a Chineseconspiracy. They know thatas long as they supplyAmerica with cheap kits, Aunt

Hilda and Uncle Milton willplay badminton at familypicnics, ensuring that thekids never take up thesport, and China cancontinue to dominate at theOlympics.

5. Who will be the fastestman at the Olympics —Usain Bolt or the streakerrunning from the cops?British tradition dictates thatat every sporting event ofany prestige, a streakermust make an appearance,if only to give the policesome much-neededexercise. So donʼt besurprised if, in the middle ofthe 100m dash, a streakerruns across OlympicStadium, wearing nothingbut a tattoo of KateMiddleton.

Thankfully, Bolt hastrained for this and wonʼt beeasily distracted. Toprepare for the LondonOlympics, he traveled toFrance and ran acrossseveral beaches.

Middle-aged man: “MonDieu! Did you see that crazyman running across thebeach?”

Wife: “Of course, I sawhim. How could I miss himwith all his clothes on?What a nutcase!”

A Dollar Per Point

A professor was givinga big test one day to hisstudents. He handed outall of the tests and wentback to his desk to wait.Once the test was overthe students all handedthe tests back in. The professor noticedthat one of the studentshad attached a $100 billto his test with a notesaying “A dollar perpoint.” The next class theprofessor handed thegraded tests back out. This student got back histest, his test grade, and$64 change.

Foreign Language

A mother mouse and ababy mouse are walkingalong, when all of asudden, a cat attacksthem.

The mother mousegoes, “BARK!” and the catruns away.

“See?” says the mothermouse to her baby. “Nowdo you see why it’s

important to learn aforeign language?”

Money Problems

A young man was havingsome money problems, and needed $200 to gethis car fixed and road-worthy again. But hadrun out of people toborrow from. So, he calls his parentsvia the operator, andreverses the charge andsays to his dad, “I needto borrow two hundreddollars.” At the other end, hisfather says, “Sorry, Ican’t hear you, son, Ithink there may be a badline.”

The boy shouts, “Twohundred. I need twohundred dollars!” “Sorry, I still can’t hearyou clearly,” says hisfather. The operator cuts in,“Sorry to butt in, but Ican hear him perfectly.”

The father says, “Oh,good. YOU send him themoney!”

A Walk by The Sea A young boy and hisdoting grandmotherwere walking along thesea shore when a hugewave appeared out ofnowhere, sweeping thechild out to sea. The horrified womanfell to her knees, raised

her eyes to the heavensand begged the Lord toreturn her belovedgrandson. And, another wavereared up and depositedthe stunned child on thesand. The grandmotherlooked the boy overcarefully. He was fine. But still she stared upangrily toward theheavens. “When wecame,” she snappedindignantly, “he had ahat!”

Arresting Mom A police recruit wasasked on an exam, “Whatwould you do if you hadto arrest your ownmother?” In the blank, he wrote,“Call for backup.”

Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in the walled city of Old Delhi (in present day Delhi, India) that served as the residence of theMughal Emperors.

It also served as the capital of the Mughals until 1857, when Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar was exiled by the British Indiangovernment.

It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007. It covers a total area of about 121.34 acres.Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, started construction of the massive fort in 1638 and work was completed in 1648 (10 years). The Red Fort was

originally referred to as “Qila-i-Mubarak” (the blessed fort), because it was the residence of the royal family. The layout of the Red Fort was organized to retain and integrate this site with the Salimgarh Fort. The fortress palace was an important focal point

of the medieval city of Shahjahanabad. The planning and aesthetics of the Red Fort represent the zenith of Mughal creativity which prevailed during the reign of Emperor Shah Jahan. This

Fort has had many developments added on after its construction by Emperor Shahjahan. The significant phases of development were under Aurangzeband later Mughal rulers.

Important physical changes were carried out in the overall settings of the site after the Indian Mutiny in 1857. After Independence, the site experienceda few changes in terms of addition/alteration to the structures.

During the British period the Fort was mainly used as a cantonment and even after Independence, a significant part of the Fort remained under thecontrol of the Indian Army until the year 2003. The Red Fort is an attraction for tourists from around the world.

Indiaʼs Prime Minister addresses the nation from the rampart of this fort every August 15 in a live telecast to the entire country and abroad.

Question: Does theUSCIS have the right todeny visa to a studentwho has been admittedto a US university?

Answer: The shortanswer is yes. However, there seems to be aconfusion in visaissuance versus ability toremain in the US in avalid status. A visa isissued by the USConsulate or Embassyupon visa application, and is an entrydocument.

The U.S. Consulatesand Embassies areunder the jurisdiction ofU.S. Department ofState, and a visa can bedenied to a foreignstudent who intends toattend an US college oruniversity, who has beenadmitted to an UScollege or university, oreven to foreign studentwho has previouslystudied as a legal foreignstudent in the US andpartially completedstudies, who returnshome or outside the U.S.

The student istherefore effectively

stuck outside the US andprohibited from returningto the US to completestudies. This is why manyforeign students will notleave the US during theirstudy program in fear ofbeing unable to secure avisa to return to completetheir education.

Even if the U.S.Department of Stateissues the student a visa, the U.S. Customs andBorder Protection canrefuse entry for the studentas he or she tries to theenter the U.S., based onissues of inadmissibility, acriminal record, previouswork without authorization,or issues relating toimmigrant intent. For

example, a student whois attending university inthe US, who returnshome for a seasonalvacation, and tries toreturn to the US could beprohibited from entrysimple because he orshe has becomeengaged to his or her UScitizen boyfriend orgirlfriend.

Finally, a foreign personwho is in the UnitedStates in another lawfulnonimmigrant status, such as visitor B-2 ordependent H-4, mayapply to the U.S.Citizenship andImmigration Service torequest a change ofstatus, pursuant to anadmission to a college oruniversity program, thepresentation of sufficientfunds to pay tuition costs, and a document issuedby the school to evidenceeligibility for attendancein a study program (I-20),and the U.S.C.I.S. canstill choose to deny therequest to change statusinto a foreign student (F-1) classification, therebyprohibiting the intendedforeign student to stay inthe U.S. to attendclasses.

Student Visa

A year after the TriValley university scam left several students

from India high and dry, another American universitywith a significant number ofIndian students, has run intotrouble after its CEO wascharged with visa fraud.

Jerry Wang, 34, the CEO ofSunnyvale California-basedHerguan University and theUniversity of East-WestMedicine, has been chargedin a San Jose District Courtwith a 15-count indictment onvisa fraud including that heforged federal documents toallow foreign students toenter and stay in the US.

Federal agents raided theHerguan University inCalifornia and arrested Wangon August 2. Wang faces amaximum penalty of up to 85years in prison if convicted ofall charges. He could alsohave to pay a fine of up to amillion dollars.

Wangʼs father and motherhave also been named in the

10-page indictment, whichalleges that between 2007and 2011, they submittedfalse transfer letters andforged other visa documentsrequired for non-immigrantstudents to the USDepartment of HomelandSecurityʼs Student andExchange Visitor Program(SEVP).

The Wangs collected tuitionfees and other paymentsfrom Herguan students inexchange for maintainingtheir false student visarecords.

The case could spelltrouble for the about 450students of Herguan, most ofwhom are from India. Aphotograph on theuniversityʼs website showssome graduating students, half of whom are Indians.

The university, however, wrote on its website that thecharges against Wang havenot affected Herguan and thatWang has resigned from hispost.

The university is “open andconducting classes as usual.Government charges againstthe Designated SchoolOfficial, who has resigned, regarding immigration issues, have not affected theUniversity. Students will findclasses scheduled as usual,”it said.

The university added that ifstudents have valid visastatus “nothing has changedfor you.”

The university is seekingWangʼs replacement and hasappointed Doreen Simmonsas the interim chief operatingofficer.

The US Immigration andCustoms Enforcement (ICE)said in a statement that inlight of the allegations,Herguan and the University ofEast-West Medicine couldlose authorization to enrollforeign students.

“Foreign students who arecurrently enrolled at theseuniversities may continue toattend classes as long as the

schools remain SEVP-certified and the students areable to maintain their lawfulimmigration status,” ICE said.

The ICE has issued bothschools a notice of intent towithdraw, the first step inrevoking the schoolsʼ SEVPcertification.

The universities have 30days to respond to the noticeand request an interview tocontest the action.

The indictment chargesWang with conspiracy tocommit visa fraud; use offalse documents; aggravatedidentity theft; andunauthorized access togovernment computers.

Wang made his initialappearance in federal courton August 2 and is scheduledto be formally arraignedAugust 20.

The school offers computerscience and businessdegrees and was grantedfederal approval in 2008 toaccept foreign students.

The San Jose MercuryNews quoted a Herguan

graduate Rajiv as sayingthat the news of the raidcame as a shock. He saidforeign students were toldif “that in the next 15 days,i f something doesnʼtchange, you either haveto find a different schoolor leave the country.”

Last year, over 1000Indian students wereaffected by the Tri-Valleyscam after the universitywas raided and shut downby authorities on chargesof a massive immigrationfraud.

Many students hadfaced the threat ofdeportation to India afterthe scam was uncovered.Federal authorities hadalleged that Tri valley hadbeen paid mill ions ofdollars by foreigners toobtain student visas thatauthorized them toremain in the US. Theuniversity, which hadaround 1,500 Indianstudents, was later closeddown.
