Austria and the US - A Strong Partnership

US affiliates are responsible for almost 50,000 jobs in Austria.

In 2017 US direct investment in Austria rebounded to $2.8 bn. The Austrian engagement in the US is even higher, reaching $12.3 bn.

Austria exported $11.7 bn in goods and $1.8 bn in services to the US.This means the US are Austria‘s second most important partner in trade.

Goods and Services Deficit

The U.S. international trade deficit decre-ased from $59.9 billion in December to $51.1 billion in January 2019, according to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis. The goods deficit decreased $8.2 billion in Ja-nuary to $73.3 billion. The services surplus decreased $0.5 billion in January to $22.1 billion.

Producer Price Index Up

The Producer Price Index for final demand edged up 0.1 percent in February the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. Final demand prices also fell 0.1 percent in both January and December. On an unadjusted basis, the final demand index advanced 1.9 percent for the 12 months ended in February.

Industrial Production Up

Industrial production edged up 0.1 percent in February after decreasing 0.4 percent in January. In February, manufacturing production fell 0.4 percent, for its second consecutive monthly decline. The index for utilities rose 3.7 percent while the index for mining moved up 0.3 percent. Total industrial production was 3.5 percent higher in February than it was a year earlier.

Unemployment Decreased

Total nonfarm payroll employment changed little in February (+20,000), and the unemployment rate declined to 3.8 percent, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statisticsreported. Employment in professional and business services, health care, andwholesale trade continued to trend up, while construction employment decreased.

Real gross domestic product (GDP) incre-ased 2.2 percent in the fourth quarter of 2018, according to the „third“ estimate re-leased by the Bureau of Economic Analysis. The growth rate was revised down 0.4 per-centage point from the „initial“ estimate re-leased in February. In the third quarter, real GDP increased 3.4 percent.

Consumer Price Up

The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers increased 0.2 percent in February on a seasonally adjusted basis, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. Over the last 12 months, the all items index increased 1.5 percent before seasonal adjustment.

The Conference Board Leading Economic Index®

The Conference Board Leading Economic Index® for the U.S. increased 0.2 percent in February to 111.5 (2016 = 100), following no change in January, and a 0.1 percent decline in December.

“The US LEI increased in February for the first time in five months,” said Ataman Ozyildirim, Director of Economic Research at The Conference Board. “February’s improvement was driven by accommodative financial conditions and a rebound in stock prices, which more than offset weaknesses in the labor market components. Despite the latest results, the US LEI’s growth rate has slowed over the past six months, suggesting that while the economy will continue to expand in the near-term, its pace of growth could decelerate by year end.”

Martine Syms (b. 1988, Los Angeles) uses video and performance to examine representations of blackness. Her artwork has been exhibited and screened extensively, including presentations at the Museum of Modern Art, Hammer Museum, ICA London, New Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles, and The Studio Museum in Harlem, among other institutions. She has lectured at Yale University, SXSW, California Institute of the Arts, University of Chicago, Johns Hopkins University, and MoMA PS1, among other venues.

Julian Schnabel is a remarkably vesatile artist. Born in New York City in 1951, the painter, sculptor, and filmmaker first received international media attention for his “plate paintings”—large-scale paintings set on broken ceramic plates. He attended the University of Houston from 1969-73, receiving a BFA, and returned to New York to participate in the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program.

At Eternity’s Gate is a biographical drama film about the final years of painter Vincent van Gogh’s life. The film dramatizes the controversial theory that van Gogh’s death was caused by mischief rather than it being a suicide.
