Welcome to GeoConvention 2016 – Optimizing resources!
The theme of this year’s convention is a timely one as in 2016 we will all be optimizing resources in every aspect of our lives. Although diffi cult times can be stressful, they too often bring out the best in companies and individuals to do things differently, become more effi cient and learn new concepts quickly in order to adapt to a changing environment.
It has become increasingly important for our industry to band together and learn from each other so we can all emerge stronger, more effi cient and with an even better understanding for the plays we all work.
From March 7-9, exhibitors from across the industry will gather on the exhibit fl oor to showcase emerging technologies, new ideas and new products. At the same time, the technical program will take place in rooms throughout the TELUS Convention Centre. In the late afternoon, networking events are scheduled so you can chat with old colleagues or meet some future ones. Further learning will take place in the GeoConvention’s fi rst off site workshop sessions held in beautiful Lake Louise on March 10 and 11.
On Behalf of the GeoConvention partner societies, the CSPG, CSEG, and CWLS, we welcome all of you to GeoConvention 2016.

BRIAN KEATINGHonourary Conservation Advisor, Calgary Zoo Adjunct Assistant Professor of Anthropology, U of Calgary
Cold Leadership
One of the most remarkable stories of risk taking and survival was played out in the remote frozen seascapes of the Antarctic. Ernest Shackleton was an extraordinary leader, who beat all possible odds during a 2 year struggle with survival. Brian has retraced much of his route, including 3 successful landings on the remote Elephant Island where 22 of his men spent 4 long months awaiting rescue. What lessons can Shackleton teach us about life and leadership? How could his ice-bound situation of courage and endurance give us insights into our own possibilities?
Brian previously held the position “Head of Conservation Outreach” at the Zoo, which enabled him to raise money and then spend it on environmental projects around the world. He’s been leading groups on nature based travel for three decades, exploring some of the best wildlife areas on the Planet. He’s a weekly guest on both Calgary and Edmonton’s CBC Radio, and for many years, was a regular on the Discovery Channel, using his own wilderness adventure and wildlife fi lming.
GARY SMITHGeologist and Ph.D
Climate Change: Fact and FictionThe recent Paris conference on climate change brought the important issue of global warming to the forefront. The public has been overwhelmed with media hype, and social networks have been alive with heated debates on the topic. Climate change advocates vehemently state that humans are causing global warming and that this will lead to catastrophic global consequences, whereas climate change skeptics are stating exactly the opposite. Who are we to believe?
Gary recently retired as Vice President Exploration at Crew Energy after a 32 career in the oil patch. He obtained his undergraduate degree in geology from the University of Ottawa, and earned his Ph.D from McGill University in 1983 studying Devonian carbonate stratigraphy and paleontology in the Canadian Arctic.
DON HLADIUKGeologist and Amateur Astronomer
Geological Postcards from the Solar SystemAs geoscientists, we study the rocks and landforms on planet earth, but what have we learned about other planetary bodies in our solar system? This presentation will look at images returned by robotic explorers travelling through our solar system and will use these photos to help us understand the geology of other worlds....
Calgary’s “Eye on the Night Sky” on the CBC, EyeOpener morning show (for over 31 years), Don currently works for ConocoPhillips Canada Ltd and over the last 22 years has worked the Devonian reefs in northern Alberta, the structure plays in the Alberta Foothills and even drilled gas and oil wells on the rim of the largest known buried impact crater in the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin known as the Steen River astrobleme. Don is also an avid amateur astronomer and has twice been President of the local chapter of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (RASC). He can be heard on the CBC morning show “the EyeOpener” on the fi rst Monday of the month at 7:20 AM where he talks about recent space science news.

Welcome to the GeoConvention technical panel, Geophysics Now.
This panel session will begin with a 15 minute presentation from each of our distinguished panellists. They will discuss their opinion on the current state of geophysics, where we are now and where we need to be against the backdrop of changing macro and micro conditions in the energy sector. This will be followed by a series of prearranged questions for the panel and questions from the audience will follow. Please join us for an afternoon of stimulating discussions as we pave the way forward for the science of geophysics.
