“We want to be theteam no one wantsto play”

By ANNE BERLEANTBLUE HILL—After the preseason games

against Ellsworth and at Lee, and an openinggame against Orono, the Eagles boys basket-ball team learned their weaknesses and “gotbetter and better as we went along,” saidCoach Dwayne Carter.

Despite a tough schedule, with manygames against Class B teams, “Our goal is tomake it to the new Cross Center,” Carterconcluded. “We want to be the team no onewants to play.”

The Eagles lost a heartbreaker in theseason opener at Orono on December 6. Thefinal score was 55-53, but after reboundingfrom a 16-point deficit in the second quarterto lead in the fourth with less than threeminutes to play, the team “didn’t pull it out,”said Carter. “We learned a lot aboutourselves.”

The team has been working hard and “is

very focused…There’s a lot of determinationthere,” Carter said.

With all of the starters returning from lastyear, except for sophomore Nick Szwez, who moved up from the freshman and juniorvarsity teams, the Eagles also have gooddefensive players to call from the bench,Carter said.

Senior starter Brett Ingraham is in his thirdyear playing on the varsity team. “He’s putin a lot of time in the off season,” Carter said.“He’s playing really well.” Senior PhilipShaheen, another starter, is handling well,Carter said, and will play point guard, freeing up junior Kelsey Allen to focus onscoring. Allen was the top scorer againstOrono, netting 13 points for the Eagles.

Junior starter Finn Davis-Batt (6’5”) hasimproved his mental toughness and isplaying well, Carter said. “He and Szwezblock a lot of shots.”

Seniors Alex Heilner, Cooper Smallidgeand Finn McMahon-Allwine, and juniorsTim Cousins and Sidney Beardsworth willplay off the bench, Carter said. “Cooper[Smallidge] has just been playing great, rebounding well, with more confidence.

“They are reallyworking hard”

By ANNE BERLEANTBLUEHILL—Under the direction of new

coach Don Driscoll, the Eagle swimmerswill compete at the varsity level for the firsttime.

“I’m excited,” said Driscoll, who has yearsof coaching experience. “We have a greatgroup of kids.”

Of the 24 team members, around eightswam for GSA last year and 10 arefreshmen.

“Three or four are pretty outstandingswimmers,” Driscoll said. However, most ofthe team members are “novice swimmers,”he continued. “It’s really going to belearning the sport and learning the tech-niques.”

Driscoll’s two goals are to improve hisswimmers’ endurance and conditioning, and“develop a real love of competitive swim-ming.”

In the team’s first meet of the season, thegirls won 89-47 over the five-memberEllsworth girls team on December 6. EuniceYang placed first in the 200-yard individualmedley and 100-yard breast stroke. MayaPelletier won the 50-yard and 500-yardfreestyle races, Emma Larson-Whittaker wasfirst in the 100-yard backstroke, and CedarSlagle won the 200 yard freestyle at 2:55;Emma Richardson who finished one secondbehind. Freshman Moore is Eagle’s firstfemale wrestler

By ANNE BERLEANTBLUE HILL—With its third coach in as

many years, the Eagle wrestlers are small in

numbers. The three team members hit threedifferent weight classes, with new memberAlex Overlock competing in the 195 class, returning wrestler Henry Bowden in the 132and freshman wrestler Liza Moore in the126.

Moore is also the first female wrestler tocompete for GSA. Overlock has a year ofwrestling for Ellsworth behind him, but has

joined the GSA team this year.“My goal is to teach them the sport of

wrestling,” said Coach Corey Nightingale, who comes to GSA after five years coachingyouth wrestling at Bucksport.

The three-person team is “a little shaky, but definitely have the potential,”Nightingale continued. “Liza’s really, reallystrong.” “Good things” could come from thefirst female wrestler at GSA, he continued. “Icould see 100 matches from her.”

The past two years have seen two Eagleswrestlers post 100 wins over their highschool career, a high mark of achievement inthe sport.

Nightingale has been practicing the teamwith drills, “but there’s nothing like” a meetto improve a wrestler. “Meets are the way togo,” he said.

At their first meet of the season onDecember 7, Bowden had four wins to oneloss; Moore went 0-4, sophomore Overlockwent 0-5. The meet was held at Bucksport, with eight teams competing.

“I thought it went pretty well,” saidNightingale. “I think they definitely gainedfrom match to match.”

New coach, young team for girls4 Winter Sports Focus, December 12, 2013 The Weekly Packet

Emphasis ondefense andfast-break

By JESSICA BROPHYBLUE HILL—The girls basketball team

has a new coach: Bill Case, the former assis-tant coach of five years, takes the lead thisyear.

Case has 30 years of experience in NewYork state as a coach. “I was honored to bethe assistant coach,” said Case, who replacescoach Don Allen.

Case said his game strategy is a fast-breakstyle. “We’re trying to be a really gooddefensive and rebounding team and then setup the fast break,” he said.

Last year, the team was 5-13. Case saidhe’s not sure what this year will hold, butthinks the team is improving rapidly.

This year’s team is quite young, said Case. There are only two seniors, Jenn McKenney,a forward, and Charlotte Ryder, a guard. There is one returning starter, sophomoreAlice Dillon.

“Almost all the players are from the juniorvarsity team or were swingers last year,” saidcase. “It’s a rebuilding year. My goal for theteam is that we are able to beat anybody bythe end of the season.”

The team’s strengths are that the playersare very enthusiastic, and there’s “excellentrebounding potential,” said Case. Thedefense is also getting stronger.

There are several good upcoming players, said Case, including sophomore point guardHanna Gutow, a “dedicated ball handler.”

The biggest challenge for the team isgaining experience as a team. “You can’ttruly accelerate experience,” said Case. It isespecially challenging for the team becauseits early schedule is very tough, facing teamslike Orono and Mount Desert.

“It’s a very difficult stretch,” said Case, who has short and long term goals for theteam. “It’s a thousand little things that addup to an unbeatable advantage,” hecontinued.

In preseason scrimmage play, the girls

won one of five matches. Case said the teamis still working to come together.

In their home opener on December 7, theEagles hosted Orono and lost 25-14. Astrong defense on both sides led to a low-scoring game, with the Red Riots pullingahead to outscore the Eagles 12-0 in thefourth quarter.

Freshman Morgan Dauk was the highscorer for the Eagles with six points.

Eagles cheering looks to buildEnthusiasm andsquad spirit high

By JESSICA BROPHYBLUE HILL—With only one returning

squad member, the George StevensAcademy Eagles cheering squad faces somechallenges for the coming year—and they’redoing so with enthusiasm.

Taylor Venema, the returning teammember, is a junior and the squad’s captain.

There are four sophomores and threefreshmen as well.

This is coach Kathleen Knight’s secondyear as the cheering coach. “We have a lot ofnew girls,” said Knight. “But we’ve alreadygot some good stunts going.”

One of the strong suits of the squad, saidKnight, is that while inexperienced, they arestill enthusiastic about trying new things.

“They’re very open,” said Knight. The other key factor in any good cheering

squad is cohesiveness. “They get along andthey work well as a team,” said Knight.

The big challenge for the year is the sameas it is in any sport with lots of new players:doing the basics, and encouraging the squadmembers to try more and difficult stunts. Sofar, squad members have come to practicewith enthusiasm.

“They’re very upbeat,” said Knight. “it’snot hard to get them to smile.”

There are new uniforms for the squad thisyear as well.

“They’re all willing to try new things,”

concluded Knight. “Now we just need toperfect those things in the next month.”
