Whether you attended school events, read the newsletter and kept up to date, volunteered in the school, sent your child to school daily and on time, greeted your child's teacher and other staff warmly, or supported in any other way (large or small) your support of our students, staff, and school program does not go unnoticed or unappreciated! It seems like such a short time ago we were just beginning the school year and now it is, sadly, coming to an end. Congratulations to Mr. Burdette for completing two successful field days! Mother Nature held out on both days despite a weather forecast that predicted rain on one day. Huge thanks to all the parent and student volunteers who helped make this year’s field days so wonderful for our students! We recently received individual test scores for our School Community Based students in grades 3-5 (Alt-MSA) and our second grade students (TerraNova 2). Scores will be sent home with individual students this week while school composite scores will be shared within the summer mailing. I look forward to sharing MSA scores during the summer mailing as well. As we end this school year and look forward to next, I wanted to share the grade level assignments for 2010-2011 (pending no teacher transfers over the summer): Pre K: Mrs. Harrigan & Mrs. Ho (special education - PEP Comprehensive class) K: Mrs. Brooking & Ms. Wilson 1 st : Mrs. Keough & Mrs. Lea 2 nd : Mrs. Chamberlain & Mrs. Myers 3 rd : Mrs. Gray & Mrs. Jacobs 4 th : Mrs. Boucher & Ms. Rodriguez 5 th : Ms. Marino SCB: Mrs. LaMonica-Hayes, Ms. Reed & Ms. Mika There will obviously be some changes for next school year but we are all excited about the new opportunities that await us! I hope your children are also looking forward to the upcoming school year. The staff and I had such a wonderful time playing kick ball against the parents on last night! The parents came dressed to impress and “hungry” to take our championship crown! Some of our staff and I play in a school system league during the Fall but I know most of the parents hadn’t played in over 20 years…so they were sore but enthusiastic because they won! They beat us so badly I don’t even recall the score but it was all good...and fun. I am SURE there will be a re-match next year! It has truly been a pleasure serving you and your children, once again, this school year. If I don’t get an opportunity to say so in person, I sincerely hope you have a fantastic summer break with your children! If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me via telephone (301-353-8050) or email ([email protected] ) during the summer months. Amy D. Bryant Principal

News .

Our final edition of the Patriot this year…I am amazed at how quickly the

year has flown by. We have done so many wonderful things this year that I am extremely proud of and, despite all the hard work, I can honestly say that this has been my most memorable year at GES! But the PTA is not made from the work of one. I have been so lucky to have so many wonderful parents and teachers and staff members behind me. This is truly a group effort and no task goes unrecognized. From the help making big decisions, planning/coordinating events & fundraisers, running errands, making copies, and everything in between…THANK YOU to

EVERYONE that did something this year for the PTA. I appreciate you and all you do and I know that all our kids benefit greatly by having parents that are involved.

And now for a few announcements:

End of the year fundraiser/ice cream social on Wednesday, June 16th from 1-5 at Cold Stone Creamery.

Yearbooks are still available for $17. We’ll

have a small supply at the front office on

Wednesday and throughout the summer but once they’re gone, they’re gone!

PTA End of the Year Survey – Please fill it

out and get it in! And finally, how could I not end the year without the awesome news of our Kickball Team?! We actually won and won BIG! The staff was a little intimidating constantly reminding us about their championship, but we worked hard and pulled it off! I think it was the blue ribbons in our hair that threw them off their game… Big thanks to the Kneeland family that was kind enough to donate the t-shirts that Mr. Castro was kind enough to design for us. Also, to Mr. Brill, our co-captain and official coach, thanks for running our practice and teaching us all enough of the game to pull off the win! Our cheerleaders were awesome and provided a lot of love! And to all our superstar players: Sharon Astill, Esteban Benjamin, Greg & Jen Brill, Nelton & Lorelei Castro, Cassandra McFadden (on injured reserve), Kelly Meredith, Mia Prather, Iyad Qassis, Melissa Rose, Meshashe Snowden, Jim Weber & Lizy Wyatt – I love you guys and had sooooo much fun! THANK YOU! The staff was already talking about a re-match…I hope that I can count on you all again next year! Have a great summer everyone and I’ll hopefully see many of you out and about in Germantown! I will still be checking email over the summer so if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to get in touch with me at [email protected].

Kimmi Photinakis

GES PTA President

Open Executive Board

Positions for the 2010-2011 School Year – We need to fill the following positions ASAP. Neither of the following positions require much more than attending

monthly meetings which are scheduled at the start of the school year. They

3

are both a great way to be a part of the Executive Board and have a greater say in what your PTA does! Please contact Kimmi Photinakis at [email protected] if you are interested Cluster Representative - The Cluster Representative attends monthly meetings of the Northwest Cluster representing Germantown Elementary School. This position will report back to the GES PTA when issues impacting our cluster are addressed and assist the Executive Board in crafting formal positions/responses on GES related topics. This position is especially important with the feasibility study underway. If the superintendent moves forward with the rebuild of GES, a boundary study will soon follow. Parental/PTA involvement will be critical! GES Delegates (2) - The Delegates attend monthly meetings of Montgomery County PTA (MCCPTA) and vote on countywide PTA issues. Typically, GES Delegates report back to school during GES PTA meetings to get a sense of the sentiment about a given issue before deciding how to cast their votes.

Open Committee Positions for the 2010-2011 School Year - Grounds Clean Up, Listserv Coordinator, NAACP Parent Representative, Reflections Program Coordinator, Safety Patrols, School Improvement Team Parent Liaison, Store Programs Coordinator, Student Banking Coordinator, School Merchandise Coordinator. These positions are so important to our PTA and none require a lot of hours. All are a great opportunity to get your feet wet in the PTA! Please contact Kimmi Photinakis at [email protected] if you’d like more information or are interested in holding a position.

Mark your calendars for the MCPS Back to School Fair!

Please plan to attend to help your children get the school year off to a great start. Hope to see you there! If you have questions, call 301-279-3100.

Summer Packets We can definitely see the difference in students who spent time on learning during the summer versus those who do not. Please remind your child to complete his/her summer packets. Copies will be housed in the main office in case he/she misplaces his/hers.

Good luck to the 2010 Fifth Grade Class! We know you’ll do well at Clemente MS next year. We’ll also miss all the students who are moving to new school homes next year. Good luck to Ms. Augustin and Mrs. Taylor at their new school homes next year! (It was announced at the last PTA meeting that Mrs. Johnson would not return to us but she is staying.)

ART NEWS! Congratulations fifth grade students and good luck, as you move on to middle school. The fifth graders are completing their legacy blocks as their final project to be shared with our school community. Fourth graders completed their printmaking unit by creating Styrofoam geometric prints. Third graders have completed their art

4

bookmaking unit and are encouraged to add to it throughout the summer months. Second grade is finishing their pictograph prints, symbols that tell a story. First graders have completed their 3-D cardboard sculpture influenced by artist Louise Nevelson. Kindergarten students have completed patterned turtle prints. SCB classes have completed their string paintings and are working on a final collage. We have had a great year together and I look forward to seeing you all next year!

What is the Summer Food Service Program?

The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) is a U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) program that helps children receive the nutrition they need to learn, play, and grow throughout the summer months.

The SFSP provides reimbursement to agencies for meals and snacks served to children in areas where at

least 50 percent of the children qualify for free or reduced-price meals under the National School

Lunch Program, or when 50 percent of children enrolled in a program qualify. Most agencies may be

reimbursed for up to two meals or snacks a day per child. Some, including migrant programs and camps, may be reimbursed for up to three meals daily per child. SFSP agencies include private nonprofit organizations, government agencies, public or nonprofit school systems, and summer camps.

The GES community is served at Clopper Mill Elementary School

18501 Cinnamon Drive. Tel 301-353-8065

7/6/10 through 7/30/2010 Breakfast 9-10 am, Lunch 12-1 pm
