Teaching v Coaching

• Swimming makes a distinction between Teaching and Coaching.– Teaching is aimed at developing basic

swimming ability and skills– Coaching is about developing and tuning

learned skills and adapting the swimmer for increased performance through a structured training programme

Level 1

• This is the starting level and there 2 ASA preferred routes based on IOS courses:1. Teaching Aquatics – Aimed at the teaching young swimmers based on the National Plan for Teaching Swimming.

2. Coaching Swimming – Aimed at those coaching swimmers in a competitive swimming clubAs a Level 1 you should be supported

and supervised by a Level 2 Teacher/Coach

Level 2

• Again there are the Teaching Aquatics and Coaching Swimming Routes.

• Level 2 Courses provide more detail and require more practical assessment.

As a Level 2 you should be able to operate on your own

Institute of Swimming (IOS)

• Is the preferred training provider for the ASA

• The IOS provides training courses and the ASA acts as the awarding body (exam board)

• All IOS Courses are booked on-line

Course Costs

• Unfortunately the courses are expensive:– Level 1 - £395– Level 2 - £680

• And there are the travel and time commitments on top

The Club will support you with the costs of courses and there are various bursaries that may be available to you.

Basic Coaching Tips Get swimmers into lanes

Ensure swimmers are not overly competitive

Get swimmers to be confident in water from an early age

Let them play in the Yate Pool at the end of the season so they continue to enjoy swimming
