IDEX ‘MOST IMPORTANT DEFENCE EVENT IN THE WORLD’

Prince Faisal Al Hussein, Com-mander of the Jordanian Royal Air Force and SOFEX Chairman, has

described IDEX as “the most important defence event in the world” and one that strengthens the UAE’s position in the in-dustry.

Prince Faisal says in a statement that the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and the UAE enjoy historical and distinctive relations, the foundations of which were established by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and King Hussein bin Talal.

Prince Faisal said that the historic and distinguished relations have increased during the reign of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and King Abdullah II, in the fields of economy, politics and especially defence and mili-tary fields.

Turkey’s stand-off missiles are on showTurkish manufacturer Roketsan is at IDEX demonstrating its next generation weapon system, Stand-Off Missile (SOM) system. The cruise missile, with complex guidance technologies and war-heads is designed to enhance the air-to-surface warfare capabili-ties of fighter aircraft. Under serial production, SOM is already in the inventory of the Turkish Air Force (TAF), integrated and certified on the F-4E/2020 and F-16 Block40 fighter aircraft platforms. Due to the common requirements of Turkish Air Force and JSF (F-35) program, SOM has been offered as a modern anti-surface cruise missile for newly developed F-35 JSF fighter aircraft.SOM is an autonomous, long range (250 km), low observable,

high precision, all weather, air to surface new generation cruise missile to be used against highly defended, anti-access and high value stationary and moving land/surface (ASuW) targets. Roketsan has also signed a cooperation agreement with Airbus Defence & Space to study the integration of SOM on the Eu-rofighter Typhoon and possible future platforms. Roketsan and Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control signed an agreement in 2014 for collaboration on the SOM-J, a new generation air-to-surface Stand-Off Cruise Missile for the F-35 aircraft. The companies will jointly develop, produce, market, sell and support SOM-J for internal carriage on F-35 aircraft or exter-nal carriage on other aircraft.

• How do you see Eurofighter Ty-phoon in the Gulf region?Gutierrez: Eurofighter Typhoon is effec-tive, proven and trusted in the Arabian Gulf region. The aircraft is capable of de-livering high levels of performance and sustainability. Eurofighter Typhoon has al-ready been ordered by seven customers worldwide, two of them located here in the Arabian Peninsula (Saudi Arabia, Oman). We are in discussions with several other potential customers in the region and we are convinced that the combination of class-leading availability and reducing through-life costs offers a genuine life cy-cle advantage.

• More than 420 Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft are in service in six countries. However, the only countries outside Europe are Saudi Arabia and Oman. Do you think that your sales footprint can be expanded?Gutierrez: Yes, for sure! We will continue to focus our attention on potential growth

markets in the Middle East, in the Asia-Pacific region and in Europe where we will remain actively engaged in a number of key campaigns and prospects. Indeed, the inter-national competition is very tough but I am optimistic that we can win new customers and new contracts in the next few years. We have an excellent product to offer. Eurofight-er Typhoon is already a leading fighter today and due to further capability enhancements which include the E-Scan radar, Storm Shadow, Meteor and Brimstone, the aircraft will be even more potent.

• Saudi Arabia agreed to order 72 aircraft a few years ago. How many have been delivered so far and what is the time frame for full delivery?Gutierrez: We have a strong order book in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and our focus is on solid execution of that order book. History has shown us that when we perform well and deliver in line with our Saudi customer’s expectations, then fur-ther business opportunities will follow.

• Eurofighter has made a mark in global air policing and most recently at the famous World Economic Fo-rum 2015 in Davos/Switzerland. What was your role and will you implement similar missions?Gutierrez: Our aircraft complemented the security arrangements for this high-ranking international conference in Swit-zerland. They were on stand-by to secure the airspace and prevent unknown aircraft jeopardizing this prestigious conference. Eurofighter Typhoon are used for Quick Re-action Alert (QRA) with six customers (Ger-many, UK, Italy, Spain, Austria, Saudi Ara-bia) seven days a week around the clock. In 2014, Germany’s Luftwaffe was on duty in the Baltics. Since January 2015, four Eu-rofighter Typhoons of the Spanish Air Force and four of the Italian Air Force are in ser-vice in the Baltics as well to secure the air-space over Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania as part of the Baltic Patrols mission. Once they have finished their job, the Royal Air Force of the UK will follow in summer 2015.

The Dubai Airshow 2013 was the largest in airshow history with 1,046 exhibitors from 60 countries and an order book of $206.1 billion. To what extent will the 2015 show be bigger and better? The 2015 show will aim to build on the suc-cess of 2013, however we can’t predict with any degree of certainty what the order book will look like until sales start. Bookings for the show at this point demonstrate a com-mitment to returning exhibitors and also some exciting new ones.

While traditional markets are declining, the Middle East continues to see strong growth across all aerospace sectors. What is the reason for this impressive performance?Airbus demonstrated in its Global Market Forecast that accessibility to aviation is a major driving factor in growth, and that ac-cessibility in emerging regions is yet to reach that of North America and Europe. It cites infrastructure investment as the main aid to achieving growth and the Middle East Re-gion has committed to significant infrastruc-ture investment, for example the develop-ment of Dubai World Central.

How much will the regional aviation in-dustry drive commercial aviation growth this time around?Airbus identified the Middle East as one of the fastest growing regions, along with Af-rica, the Commonwealth of Independent States and Asia, in its latest market forecast.

The Dubai 2020 Expo is likely to be a major trigger for business all round in the region, particularly Dubai. Will it make a significant difference to the business aviation sector?Expo 2020 is expected to attract 20 million visitors, of which 70 per cent are predicted from to be from overseas, increasing de-mand for air traffic across all sectors.

The MRO sector was the segment lead-er during last air show. Do you think it will draw focus again this year and if so what are the likely highlights? There were many aviation segments high-lighted at Dubai Airshow 2013 along with MRO; including UAVs, commercial aviation, defence and business aviation. It is too early to predict what individual exhibitors will be brining, but we hope to see some exciting highlights in many sectors.

In military aviation, UAV is a new attrac-tion. Which are the major participants in this sector? Major participants in the UAV sector at the 2013 show included Adcom, BAE Systems, Northrop Grumman, Saab and Tawazun; all of whom will be returning to the 2015 show.

The Dubai Airshow takes place at Dubai World Central from the 8th to the 12th of November 2015.

Troops identifying targets from a long distance often rely on vehicle-mounted or airborne-based long-

range monitoring systems during combat operations. But the need for dismounted troops to have excellent stand-off distance while monitoring or acquiring a target has be-come increasingly important to command-ers who have troops in remote locations. Recognizing that need, DRS Technolo-gies, a Finmeccanica company, devel-oped the Mini See Spot (MSS), a dis-mounted or handheld long-range target detection device with the additional capa-bility to see a laser designation spot. The MSS has taken what was tradition-ally a vehicle or airborne platform and re-duced it to fit in the palm of your hand, de-creasing the reliance on those additional larger platforms allowing ground troops to extend their mission capabilities.

The device, significantly reduced in size but not function from similar products, al-lows for single hand operations and bet-ter all-around portability. Its long-range reconnaissance, advanced image quality and true imaging laser see spot are the key characteristics of the MSS thermal imager. The MSS weighs less than two pounds, including its six hot-swappable batteries that extend operations without having to power down during a battery change. Hot-swappable means you can change batter-ies without shutting down the device. The self-contained system and viewfind-er allows users to see battlefield laser

markers/designators directly on targets. It rapidly identifies, acquires and engag-es targets and has clear imagery through degraded battlefield and weather condi-tions. Target identification by ground troops or aerial platforms can often be difficult from stand-off locations possibly leading to col-lateral damage or fratricide. Upgraded sensors on the MSS have vastly improved target identification al-lowing for further stand-off distance and improved identification, while the addition of the ability to see a laser designation spot on a target can reduce the chance of fratricide and collateral damage during combat operations. This new system brings dismounted troops more flexibility in the field when they need it, in a more portable package while re-ducing the reliance on airborne or vehicle mounted target detection systems.

size but not function from similar prod-

ucts, allows for single hand operations

and better all-around portability.’

Northrop Grumman’s upgraded heli-copter cockpit has been derived from the U.S. Army’s UH-60V Black

Hawk program and virtually replicates the newer UH-60M pilot-vehicle interface, providing a common training environ-ment, while extending the life and mission capabilities of the UH-60 platform. This allows for a highly digital, integrated suite of avionics equipment that is afforda-ble and is available at a fraction of the cost of a new aircraft. Scalable and fully inte-grated, the avionics mission equipment package is platform-agnostic and can be applied to many platforms worldwide due to its modularity. This design efficiently enables rapid inser-tion of new capabilities through software-

only solutions rather than hardware addi-tions, minimizing total life cycle cost and risk. The company’s solution is mature and low risk, having already been proven through a U.S. Army-validated flight dem-onstration on a UH-60L helicopter.Northrop Grumman is also showcasing the AN/TPS-80 Ground/Air Task Oriented Radar (G/ATOR) system that has been developed to replace five of the six types of ground radars that are currently in use with the U.S. Marine Corps. Their capa-bilities exceed those of the systems it is replacing, while also offering an open ar-chitecture approach that facilitates capa-bility upgrades and the insertion of emerg-ing technologies. The system has been designed to be light

and compact for deployment and for rapid emplacement by helicopter or vehicle. Its system architecture allows it to interface di-rectly with multiple types of command and control systems on a plug-and-fight basis. It offers multi-mission capability, which permits the radar to perform four principal missions using the same hardware. Soft-ware loads optimize the operation of the radar to perform each mission. When all modes are fully implemented, an operator will be able to switch modes at the press of a button. The G/ATOR, upgraded helicopter cockpit and other advanced capabilities will be on display at the Northrop Grumman exhibit in the U.S. pavilion at booth 02-A10 and stand CS-2.

• Your product line covers all aspects of electronic warfare, from single stand-alone equipment to complete integrated systems, for naval, air-borne and ground applications. What is the latest in the line that you bring to IDEX 2015?The key word for us is integration cou-pled with modularity. Our key competitive advantage isn’t particularly in technolo-gies, as that can be sourced elsewhere, but in the integration of products into a single system. We create an integrated architecture with advanced algorithms, something we call modern advanced electronic warfare systems. An example of this is showcased on our stand in run-ning video for helicopter applications, specifically in combat search and rescue missions. This latest advancement is a fully integrated suite based on a physi-cally integrated passive and active elec-tronic warfare systems and an infrared countermeasure. We are trying to adopt open modular integrated architectures in all the different segments that we cover.

• Having merged with Expert system to form CY4Gate, what aspects of se-curity are now being addressed?Cyber defense and cyber security is a critical function in terms of cyber elec-tronic warfare and cyber intelligence. At CY4Gate we manage to implement a convergence between traditional elec-tronic warfare utilizing the electromagnet-ic spectrum and the wired network. The core of our proposition lies in increasing capability in the gathering of intelligence that is operationally meaningful and ana-lyzing it. Today, data availability is not a problem however the key issue is to make sense of this data – to find patterns in a sea of information we have gathered and providing analysts with tools to facilitate the work that they do in a different, better and faster way.

• Another recent foray has been in the homeland security which is of great interest particularly in view of increasing terror threats. How do you address terror threats?

This is strictly linked to the cyber electron-ic warfare and intelligence field because the typical end users for the solutions that CY4Gate will produce are not only military organizations but intelligence agencies and law enforcement whose primary con-cern with the threats associated with ter-rorism. We address this important issue by deploying solutions from both Elettron-ica and CY4Gate in a larger perspective.

• Your systems are in service with the armed forces of 28 nations in 5 conti-nents. How significant are countries in the Middle East among your clients? The UAE is our number one export country and I would see our contribu-tions here are significant. Looking at electronic warfare specifically, I would consider that the market to be evenly divided between Elettronica and Thales. Considering the importance of the inner security of the country and that almost 50% of its electronic surveillance solu-tions are in our hands, it’s quite a signifi-cant relationship.

Intelligent solutions to global issuesChief marketing and strategy officer Eugenio Santagata discusses Elettronica’s approach to modern advanced electronic warfare systems.

The company’s special mission aircraft featured at IDEX include the Armed Caravan and Maritime Patrol Aircraft.

MGK

Orbital ATK mortar guidance kit (MGK) transforms standard 120mm mortars into precision weapons. In less than one year, MGK has won a competitive shoot off for the U.S. Army’s Accelerated Precision Mortar Initiative (APMI) and has moved from design and development for produc-tion to the start of initial production in un-precedented fashion for a precision weap-on. This was accomplished by working

closely with the Army’s program manage-ment office to develop a timeline that the company could meet for development and that the government could rapidly support for the required testing to certify that the weapon was ready to go in to production for the urgent material release that will put precision 120mm mortars in Afghanistan this spring.

Aircraft Missile Warning SystemThe company will also feature its combat-proven AAR-47 missile warning system. The AAR-47 is an electronic warfare system designed to protect helicopters and aircraft against surface-to-air missile threats. It also alerts aircrews to threats from laser-guided and laser-aided weap-ons, and is credited with saving numerous military aircrew lives and aircraft from at-tack. The AAR-47 is presently equipped on aircraft flown by the U.S. and its allies in more than 16 countries. It is installed on more than 2,600 fixed and rotary-wing air-craft including the C-5, C-17, C-130, P-3, AH-1W, UH-1N, V-22.

For over 40 years Alenia Aermacchi (MB.326 and MB.339) jet trainers and SIAI Marchetti (SF.260) basic

trainers have been in service across the Arabian Peninsula. Its MB.339 jet trainer has been chosen by the UAE to set up the “Al Fursan” national aerobatic team. With all the pilots trained in Italy, using Italian aircraft, Italian training systems, tools and doctrines, “Al Fursan” provides the ideal showcase for the capabilities of the air-craft and its integrated training system package (ITS). Alenia Aermacchi is the only company in the world to offer such a comprehensive training program. Thanks to its range of trainer aircraft, Alenia Aermacchi covers the complete pilot training syllabus, from the screening and primary phase to the basic phase (on the new low-cost, yet ef-fective, single-turbofan M-345 HET) up to the advanced and LIFT (lead-in fighter training) phase on the market leading twin-engine M-346, selected by the UAE Air Force early in 2009.Reducing training costs and addressing the growing need to combine effective-ness and efficiency in highly sophisticated aircraft are main drivers in the accelerat-ing move from stand-alone trainers to a full ITS and Alenia Aermacchi has devel-oped an advanced “system-of-systems” to accompany student pilots from flight school entry, up to lead-in fighter training.

With over 50 years of unrivalled experi-ence in holistic pilot training, it has devel-oped a unique ITS for several customers for its state-of-the-art M-346 aircraft with full mission simulators, mission support system, academic training media and training management tools. At the heart of the Alenia Aermacchi ITS there is the innovative and market leading M-346 lead-in fighter trainer - the only new-generation trainer optimized for the role of training pilots who fly the latest-generation

of high-performance military planes. With a total of 56 aircraft ordered by Ita-ly, Poland, Singapore and a Middle East country, the M-346 offers reduced acqui-sition and operational costs. Furthermore the reduced number of hours necessary for its maintenance makes the aircraft ex-ceptionally cost-effective.The new entry in the Alenia Aermacchi trainers range is the M-345 HET (high ef-ficiency trainer), the most recent solution proposed by Finmeccanica-Alenia Aer-macchi for the basic-advanced training phase. The M-345 HET is better than a turboprop trainer: it has lower acquisition costs and the same operating costs, but offers pilots a true jet experience in both speed and performance. With the M-345 HET Alenia Aermacchi proposes a solution which guarantees a cost-effective ratio lower than the modern “heavy” turboprop trainers. Compared to these aircraft, the M-345 features decid-edly higher performance, specifically with regard to the transfer speed to the train-ing range and the altitude, leading to a drastic reduction of “idle times” in each training session, as the student pilot can perform a higher number of tasks included in the training needs analysis within the representative flight hour, thus completing the syllabus in a 25 per cent shorter time period (from the standard 120 hours down to 90).

The FORTIS exoskeleton is an unpowered, lightweight exoskel-eton that increases an operator’s

strength and endurance by transferring the weight of heavy loads from the user’s body directly to the ground. The objective of this effort is to mature and transition exoskeleton technology to the Department of Defense industrial base and perform testing and evaluation for industrial hand-tool applications at Navy shipyards.“Ship maintenance often requires use of heavy tools, such as grinders, riveters or sandblasters,” said Adam Miller, director of new initiatives at Lockheed Martin Mis-siles and Fire Control. “Those tools take

a toll on operators due to the weight and the tight areas where they are sometimes used. By wearing the FORTIS exoskel-eton, operators can hold the weight of those heavy tools for extended periods of time with reduced fatigue.”The FORTIS exoskeleton augments the strength of maintenance personnel in the physically demanding shipyard environ-ment. Its ergonomic design moves natu-rally with the body and allows operators to maintain flexibility and this way the op-erator is not hindered by the exoskeleton. This means operators can work longer and more effectively.Lockheed Martin has been investing in exoskeleton research and development

for more than five years, most recently through the NCMS Commercial Technolo-gies for Maintenance Activities (CTMA) program. These investments have led to advancements in powered and unpow-ered exoskeleton systems for applications ranging from military to industrial.“We are pleased that once again a tech-nology advanced through our highly suc-cessful CTMA program will be put into commercialization,” said Rick Jarman, president and chief executive officer of NCMS. “The Lockheed Martin FORTIS exoskeleton contract is just another exam-ple of how collaboration around research and development speeds the time to mar-ket for these important innovations.”

Boeing has been awarded a $29.5 million contract to design and de-velop a beam control system that

could provide exceptional accuracy for laser weapons on U.S. Navy warships. Boeing will begin to design a prototype High Power Beam Control Subsystem (HP BCSS) that’s compatible with High Energy Lasers (HEL) based on solid-state laser (SSL) technology. Boeing’s solution will be compatible with systems other companies are designing for the Office of Naval Research’s (ONR) Sol-id State Laser Technology Maturation (SSL-TM) program.

The resulting beam control system will focus and hold a laser on a moving aim-point long enough to disable the target. Doing that with a ship-based laser is par-ticularly challenging, given the maritime environment and constant movement of a sea vessel.“Boeing innovations in beam control and directed energy technologies are keys to understanding laser weapon system configurations that could yield a capabil-ity for the Navy in their maritime environ-ment,” said Peggy Morse, vice president, Boeing Directed Energy & Strategic Sys-tems (DESS).

The Boeing beam control system capi-talises on the company’s work with the US Army’s High Energy Laser Mobile Demonstrator (HEL MD). In demonstra-tions at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida in 2014, in which Navy program team members participated, HEL MD ac-quired, tracked and destroyed targets in windy and foggy conditions. Important technical data was collected on energy systems within a maritime environment, which ONR shared with the Army and Boeing. HEL MD has disabled mortars and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) during recent testing.

German accuracy assured IRIS-T SLM proves i tsmett le in l ive-f i re tes t ing

In response to greater international and domestic threats, par-ticularly from medium-range missiles, unmanned air vehicles and rockets of varying complexity, ground-based air defense

units are now an essential part of controlling airspace as well as protecting the population, soldiers in action and valuable assets.Based on the new IRIS-T SL missile built by the German gov-ernment in 2007, Diehl Defence offers armed forces an entire air defence missile system as a modern and cost-effective solu-tion, allowing customers the flexibility to choose between system components of different manufacturers. The highly mobile and all-terrain capable, medium-range IRIS-T SLM (surface launched medium range) provides comprehensive 360 degree protection against air attacks by aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles and guided weapons as well as large caliber rock-ets. It also allows simultaneous engagement of several targets, even at very short range and with extremely short reaction times.IRIS-T SLM can be integrated into almost all air defense archi-tectures. Due to its high degree of automation, it is ideally suited for continuous operation with minimum staff requirements and is designed for easy integration with standardized and software-based interfaces providing seamless connection to existing and future command and control systems. For the first time, Diehl Defence demonstrated the full function-ality of the IRIS-T SLM system comprising its own setup for ra-dar, a tactical operation center and launcher in a live firing at the Overberg test range in South Africa in January 2014, following it up with a demonstration of its full performance as the most advanced short to medium range surface-to-air missile system in January 2015. During this final qualification campaign, three firings from very short to long range and very low to high altitude scenarios were executed – all of them resulted with direct hits of the target drones with targets engaged at a distance up to and over 30 km from the launch point underscoring its impressive accuracy.

SAAB preparedfor challenges

Saab is the one of the dominant providers of mili-tary live training systems in Europe. Using their experience in developing flexible and efficient

training systems for unit sizes from squad up to battal-ion level, Saab’s Instrumented Training system forms the core of a tactical training solution that is proven in many countries. Based on decades of experience, the system and the ancillary services provided by Saab draw heav-ily from lessons learned in a wide variety of training environments. The company is aware of the types of challenges its customers now face – whether in urban environments, joint forces operations or multinational peace support operations, and their systems reflect this knowledge.Saab has been in the Middle East since the mid-80s, initially supplying stationary and moving armor target system and for more than 20 years with laser equipped ballistic simulators. The BT46 simulator system is still the only one of its type that has survived in the tough and demanding en-vironment of the Middle East, says Ulf Ölen, respon-sible for training in the region. More than 300 vehicle systems have been delivered to date. They also have a support programme for all the products in conjunction with selected local partners.

M777 is the leading 155mm 39 calibre lightweight artillery gun specifically developed for rapid

reaction forces in expeditionary roles or border protection. An extremely light and agile weapon platform, the M777 is deployable either as a battery or au-tonomously and with full digital fire con-trol. It enters the battle earlier than any other comparable towed artillery system, delivering quick and decisive firepower through precision strike, interdiction and close support. The M777 is a proven bat-tle winner operating in harsh desert envi-ronments for over ten years.

It can also be transported by plane and deployed by amphibious support craft and unloaded on a beach or transported by ship and moved ashore with a helicopter. Weighing much less than traditional alter-natives, which require heavier towing ve-hicles that have limited mobility in harsh terrain such as soft sands and rocky de-serts, the M777 can be towed by small vehicles with high maneuverability in the battle area. The gun and a small towing vehicle can even be transported by air using sup-port helicopters like the CH47, CH53 and V22 Osprey and can also be delivered by

parachute drop for rapid deployment into inaccessible areas. The M777 can be brought into action by a detachment in less than two minutes and can be brought out of action in less than three minutes. In addition to its abil-ity to fire standard ammunition, it is fully capable of firing the new M982 Excalibur precision strike round to ranges over 37 kilometers and the 5” multi service-stand-ard guided projectile over 100 kilometres. M777 can be seen on the BAE Systems IDEX Stand: 05-C25 (Hall 5). For more information please visit www.baesystems.com/idex2015.

Weapon of choice M777 Lightweight Howitzer provesideal for deser t environmentsThe geographic location of the Gulf states, coupled with demanding desert terrain, requires easily trans-portable weaponry to respond to strategic threats. The security of the region as a whole, demands the most sophisticated and modern weaponry available, which includes the 155mm M777 Lightweight Howitzer.

When the U.S. deploys its first land-based ‘Aegis Ashore’ SM-3 site in Romania later this

year, the missile will become the first of its kind with the flexibility to be both sea and land based.“The SM-3 is widely seen as America’s best regional ballistic missile defense in-terceptor, but it’s not just for ships any-more,” said Dean Gehr, director of Ray-theon’s Land-based Standard Missile program. “The very same missiles can be launched from either sea or land.” To date, the SM-3 has only been deployed by the U.S. and Japan on Aegis cruisers and destroyers. Successful in more than 25 at-sea tests, the first land-based test of the SM-3 took place at an Aegis Ashore site in Hawaii last year. The missile can defend entire regions, said Gehr, which greatly reduces the number of batteries and missiles required to defend a given country. “SM-3 provides significantly greater pro-tection to a much larger area than any other mobile missile defense system,” said Gehr. “Moving from ship to land makes a lot of sense and opens up the door in terms of who might be able to take advantage of this capability and destroy threats.” Because the SM-3 destroys threats where no others can, it provides nations more time to respond. The Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments (CSBA) issued a report in 2014 suggesting land-based SM-3 sites would be great options in the Middle East and Japan to defend fixed locations. Aegis Ashore sites will use the same combat system, radar, and vertical launch system being deployed on the US Navy’s most advanced ships. “Just like a ship, an Aegis Ashore site could launch other missiles beyond just SM-3,” said Gehr. “Conceptually, if you added in SM-2s, SM-6s, and ESSMs, you’d have an integrated and layered air and missile defense capability against ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, UAVs, and enemy aircraft.”With the Missile Defense Agency, Ray-theon plans to begin testing a new termi-nal ballistic missile defense capability for the SM-6 in 2015.

In 2007, a Rafale C fighter was lost in a tragic accident which claimed the life of its pilot. The ensuing enquiry proved

that the mishap was a classic case of Controlled Flight Into Terrain (CFIT) after the officer lost references during an air-to-air training mission, at night, in mar-ginal weather conditions. The board of enquiry recommended that the Rafale be equipped with a fully-automatic AGCAS to eliminate the risk of such an accident ever happening again, and this safety system will become fully operational in 2018.

A sophisticated system

The current ‘recovery mode’ of the AG-CAS is designed to bring the Rafale back in a safe attitude within the shortest time-frame, with the wings level and the aircraft in a slight climb. It is manually triggered by a simple pressure on a control located on the fighter’s instrument panel, just in front

of the side stick. Audio and visual alarms in all displays warn the pilot of an impend-ing CFIT danger. With the advent of the fully automatic ‘Ground Watch’ mode now being devel-oped, the aircraft will initiate a recovery on its own as soon as it recognises the likelihood of a CFIT, or if the pilot be-comes incapacitated by a G-LOC (g-induced loss of consciousness), a very dangerous phenomenon which has led to the loss of dozens of fighters and air-crews worldwide since the early Eighties. G-LOC is caused by a violent manoeuver and a very rapid onset of Gs which drains the pilot’s blood down to the lower part of his body, causing unconsciousness. The Rafale’s AGCAS will constantly monitor the attitude of the Rafale and its height above the ground, continuously assess-ing the risk of CFIT. The AGCAS will work through the elevation 3D database, the autopilot and the Rafale’s digital fly-by-

wire control systems, and will always be ready to initiate the ‘roll and pitch up to upright’ manoeuvre which will take just a couple of seconds to complete, without any pilot action. The AGCAS should react in all conditions, but without false alarms. Dassault Aviation renowned know-how will allow the AGCAS to be perfectly fine-tuned: the recovery manoeuvre will have to be initiated on time, but without being too violent.Trials of the fully automatic AGCAS will begin in April 2015, with service entry in 2018. Dassault Aviation flight controls engineers and terrain following special-ists will closely cooperate to develop the system and refine its operating modes. Testing will first be conducted on fixed test benches (during simulated flights, terrain elevation will be fictitiously modified and brought up) before testing moves on to real aircraft in demanding conditions to check how the system behaves.

RAFALE TO BECOME EVENSAFER THANKS TO AGCAS

The Dassault Aviation Rafale omnirole fighter will soon be fitted with an Automatic Ground Collision Avoidance System (AG-CAS) which should help improve even further its already impres-sive safety record.
