Veteran Jobs

Are there qualified jobs for me when I get out?

The unemployment rate for veterans who served on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces at any time since September 2001--a group referred to as Gulf War-era II veterans--edged down to 9.0 percent in 2013, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. The jobless rate for all veterans also edged down to 6.6 percent. Twenty-nine percent of Gulf War-era II veterans reported having a service-connected disability in August 2013, compared with 15 percent of all veterans.

This information was obtained from the Current Population Survey (CPS), a monthly sample survey of about 60,000 households that provides data on employment and unemployment in the United States. Data about veterans are collected monthly in the CPS; those monthly data are the source of the 2013 annual averages presented in this news release. In August 2013, a supplement to the CPS collected additional information about veterans on topics such as service-connected disability and veterans’ current or past Reserve or National Guard membership. Information from the supplement is also presented in this release. The supplement was co-sponsored by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Veterans’ Employment and Training Service.

Important Facts

Among the 722,000 unemployed veterans in 2013, 60 percent were age 45 and over. Thirty-five percent were age 25 to 44, and 5 percent were age 18 to 24.

Veterans with a service-connected disability had an unemployment rate of 6.2 percent in August 2013, little different than the rate for veterans with no disability (6.6 percent).

One in 3 employed veterans with a service-connected disability worked in the public sector in August 2013, compared with 1 in 5 veterans with no disability.

Madam Chairwoman, Ranking Member, and members of the subcommittee, on behalf of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America’s one hundred and eighty thousand members and supporters, stated that, ” America’s newest veterans face serious employment challenges. The process of returning to civilian life is complicated by the most severe economic recession in decades. Furthermore, many Iraq and Afghanistan veterans, leaving the active-duty military, find civilian employers who do not understand the value of their skills and military experience. As a result, unemployment rates for Iraq and Afghanistan veterans are staggering. Additionally, the National Guardsmen and Reservists who leave behind their civilian lives to serve alongside active-duty troops, are inadequately protected against job discrimination. The experience of previous generations of veterans who faced similar situations suggest that today’s veterans may continue to struggle for years to come.”

If we do not find ways to educate, make it easier to adjust and directly correlate what veterans did while in the service to what they qualify out in the civilian community, we will be breeding a community of “lost” souls who in a lot of cases, wander the streets during the day and night.

P.T.S.D.living withit...

On or off the battlefield, the strained and war-weary men and women who have either served, or are serving in the military today are often faced with emotional scars. This has been a familiar problem throughout the centuries, where soldiers have suffered from such afflictions as anxiety, sleeplessness, nightmares, stress and depression. But today, more than ever, these normal responses to the physical and emotional hardships of war are labeled as a “mental disorder” called “Post Traumatic Stress Disorder” (PTSD).

Not long ago, war trauma was treated with compassion, understanding and love. But today, the willingness to empathize with the warrior and listen to his experiences has been replaced by a psychiatric pop-a-pill “quick-fix” mentality that employs antidepressants, antipsychotics, stimulants, sedatives or anti-anxiety drugs.

These chemical compounds, however, can produce harmful consequences, and accumulating evidence shows that the ever-increasing use of psychiatric drugs may be fueling an epidemic

DRUGGING THE MILITARY—PROFITING FROM PTSD

of military suicides and unexplained deaths.

From 2001 to 2009, the Army’s suicide rate increased more than 150% while orders for psychiatric drugs rose 76% over the same period. These soaring statistics cannot be attributed to the horrors of war, as 85% of military suicide victims had never even seen combat. This suggests that the PTSD diagnosis is being widely handed

out to active-duty and vets to justify putting more and more of them on cocktails of prescribed mind-altering drugs from which they may never recover.

We strive to purchase our coffee through the Fair Trade market and

other organic coffee providers.

Coffee is big business in world trade —

second only to oil. It’s a commodity,

subject to the market’s ups and downs. That’s

led to the suffering of many of the world’s 25

million coffee farmers, who often get little

financial return on this labour-intensive crop.

But it can be fair. In the late 1980s, after

nearly a century of fluctuating markets

and crashing economies, a group

of fair-minded people realized there had

to be a better way. The fair trade coffee

movement was born.When we started

G.I. Joe Coffee, we established a

partnership with

our roaster, who has experience picking

coffee beans, and now seeks the world

over finding the best Fair Trade coffee. He

became involved in importing unique

and exotic coffees. So this way, we aid

our customers in the search for our allied

farms around the world.

By becoming part of the Fair trade network,

you participate in a program that strives

for equality in the coffee industry

Gary Sinise

For the past several years I have devoted much of my time to supporting the men and women who protect and defend our great country. I have met many dedicated people who are actively working to do the same and I have tried to do what I can to support their efforts as well as spearhead many projects on my own in support of those who serve, as well as their families.

I have formed the Gary Sinise Foundation to help build additional resources for these efforts and to help highlight the activities of those who continue to do all they can to keep military families strong. I’ve traveled to visit our troops in Iraq and around the world and have also performed with my band (Gary Sinise and the Lt. Dan Band ) in Afghanistan, Europe, United Kingdom, Asia, Guantanamo Bay and throughout the U.S.

in an effort to help boost the morale of our troops and military families.

With help from supporters such as yourself, through the Gary Sinise Foundation, we will continue to expand this mission to support our nation’s defenders, veterans, first responders and their loved ones to promote the importance of keeping our country strong by taking care of those who serve. There’s much more work to be done.

At the Gary Sinise Foundation, we serve our nation by honoring our defenders, veterans, first responders, their families, and those in need. We do this by creating and supporting unique programs designed to entertain, educate, inspire, strengthen, and build communities.

A dream wedding after a nightmare injuryIn 2010, Marine Corporal Juan Dominguez stepped on an IED while serving in Afghanistan. Dominguez was left a triple amputee, losing both legs and one arm. But that didn’t stop him from marrying the love of his life, Alexis. To honor the vet, the town of Temecula, Calif., donated all the elements of their dream wedding — an estimated $30,000 worth of stuff, including the flowers, the venues, the photographer, and the food. But the real icing on the proverbial cake? Dominguez was able to walk down the aisle with his beautiful bride in a sunset ceremony on April 27.

“Did I ever think I was going to get to this point?” Dominguez said. “Yes, yes I did. Because nothing’s changed. I’m a little bit shorter. I lost a couple legs and an arm but my brain’s still here, my heart’s still here.”

An anonymous surpriseAfter stopping in a Dunkin Donuts this past March, Samantha Brown returned to her car to find an envelope left under her windshield wipers. Inside she found two $20 bills and a note that read:

“I noticed the sticker on the back of your car. Take your hero out to dinner when he comes home. Thank you both for serving. Him deployed and you waiting.” — United States Veteran / God Bless. [Huffington Post]

The sticker on the back of Ford’s car read “Half my heart is in Afghanistan.” The heart is her boyfriend Albert John DeSimone, who is serving abroad in the Army. Ford, who lives outside of Boston, went home and posted a photo of the anonymous gift on Facebook, as it was too early to call her boyfriend. Above the photo she said, “There are no words to describe how I’m feeling right now. Tears in my eyes. I just wish I could thank whoever did this! God bless our troops and all of those who stand behind them.” The picture instantly went viral, racking up more than 1.2 million likes and 142,000 shares. When Ford was finally able to tell DeSimone the touching story, he said it’s people like this who make him proud to be an American soldier.

The disabled veteran who learned to walk againArthur Boorman was a paratrooper in the first Gulf War. His service was quite difficult on his body, and he eventually lost much of the use of his back and knees, forced to rely on wheelchairs and canes. Doctors told him he would never walk without crutches again. Depressed and immobile, Boorman gained a lot of weight. Desperate, Boorman contacted yoga teachers for fitness help. Most took one look at him and said it wasn’t possible. But wrestler-turned-yogi Diamond Dallas Page accepted Boorman’s condition as a challenge, and really believed in the 47-year-old veteran.

In the video that recounts Boorman’s struggle, you see the portly vet struggle to walk even with the help of canes. You see him attempt and fail at balancing in a yoga move. You see him fall again and again — sometimes even flat on his face — and yet you see him get back on that yoga mat. Over time, Boorman sheds the pounds, gains strength and flexibility, and, eventually, the ability to not only walk without help, but also to sprint — his long hair blowing freely behind him — down the road. “Never underestimate what you can accomplish when you believe in yourself,” reads the script on the video’s close. Grab a tissue and see for yourself.

The homeless veteran heroHe’s known as Staff Sgt. Royal on account of his 10 years in the army. And it was that battlefield training that helped the homeless Seattle veteran save a friend’s life one summer night last year. Royal was just a few blocks away when an argument escalated outside a bar, and an unidentified man shot the homeless man he was fighting with. The victim ran down the street before collapsing. Royal quickly came to his aid. The bullet had struck the man’s femoral artery — a large artery in the thigh that, when ruptured, can cause victims to bleed out. Royal used a belt as a tourniquet to stop the bleeding. The man was transported to a nearby hospital and was said to be in stable condition. Royal attributed his knowledge to his medical training at Ft. Carson in Colorado. “I’m just glad I was there,” he said.

Veterans have served our country with honor and kept us safe, and now it’s their turn to have a piece of the American dream they fought so hard for.

Over one million unemployed veterans deserve our full support transitioning back into civilian life. It’s time we give back to them...don’t you agree?

By having veterans take our online core strength evaluation test, we are able to help them identify op-portunities that they can be passionate about, and within their skill level.

Next, veterans select the business opportunity, or start ups they want. It could be an agency, a franchise, online business, or an existing business. Then veterans are assigned a business coach and a mentor to work with them until they have built a profitable business. We can even help them find funding sources. Veterans will receive assistance as long as needed.

The success of this program depends on the generosity of individual donations, corporate sponsors and underwriting opportunities, as well as community and state grants. Please join us, to make this mission a reality for more Veterans. We extend our appreciation to you for your assistance in this worthwhile endeavor. The Fisher House program is a unique private-public partnership that supports America’s military in their time of need. The program recognizes the special sacrifices of our men and women in uniform and the hardships of military service by meeting a humanitarian need beyond that which is normally provided by the Departments of Defense (DOD) and Veterans Affairs (VA).

Because members of the military and their families are stationed worldwide and must often travel great distances for specialized medical care, Fisher House Foundation donates “comfort homes,” built on the grounds of major military and VA medical centers. These homes enable family members to be close to a loved one at the most stressful times - during the hospitalization for an unexpected illness, disease, or injury.

Currently, there are 62 Fisher Houses in operation in the United States, two in Germany and one in United Kingdom. There is at least one Fisher House at every major military medical center to assist families in need and to ensure that they are provided with the comforts of home in a supportive environment.

Annually, Fisher Houses serve more than 17,000 families, and have made available over five million days of lodging to family members since the program originated in 1990. By law, there is no charge for any family to stay at a Fisher House operated by the VA; and Fisher House Foundation uses donations to reimburse the individual Fisher Houses operated by the Army, Navy, and Air Force. No family pays to stay at any Fisher House!

VA Long Beach Healthcare System is in the on deck circle for a Fisher House. The local goal is $6 million to fund construction of a Fisher House for the VA Medical Center in Long Beach. VA Long Beach Health Care System served over 50,000 veterans and active duty men and women in fiscal year 2013. They have nationally recognized specialties

in their spinal cord injury unit and the Soltes Blind Rehabilitation Center.

In late 2012 a group of people from the Long Beach Rotary Club, American Gold Star Mothers and the American Legion came together to form Fisher House Southern California, Inc. On January 16, 2013 the new entity was incorporated as a nonprofit public benefit corporation with the mission to raise $6 million for the construction of a Fisher House on the Long Beach VA campus. Groundbreaking is scheduled for January 2015 with completion in the third quarter 2015.

The unique part of this private-public partnership is how the building is developed. The VA donates the building site after an extensive review of the location’s need for this size and type of housing for patients’ families. Fisher House has standard building sizes ranging from eight units up to 20 units and the plans have already been approved by the VA for construction. Once funds are committed, the house is built, landscaped and completely furnished. When complete the house is donated to the VA and they assume the ongoing operation.

How can you contribute? Send donations to the address below. The first $3 million raised locally by Fisher House Southern California, Inc. will be matched by a $3 million matching grant. Pledges can be made over two years, 2014-2015; and all contributions are tax deductible.

One child is holding something that’s been banned in America to protect them. Guess which one. We keep ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ out of schools because of the bottle of wine in her basket. Why not assault weapons? We ban the game dodgeball because it’s viewed as being too violent. Why not assault weapons? We won’t sell Kinder chocolate eggs in the interest of child safety. Why not assault weapons?

Dodge ball was condemned by the National Association for Sport and Physical Education in 2006 and banned in some New Hampshire schools. The Kinder chocolate egg was banned by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) because the small toy hidden inside could be a choking hazard. Trina Schart Hyman’s version of Little Red Riding Hood was banned by two California schools in 1990 because Little Red Riding Hood is carrying a bottle of wine in her basket, a detail taken directly from the original 17th-century story by Charles Perrault.

When is enough, enough? Where are our priorities? More to come I’m sure...

Inspirational speaker/singer/songwriter Kathy Bee believes in keeping a positive outlook on life; knowing that you are not alone; you are your brother’s keeper; and in “People Helping People”. Mere sayings some might presume, but to Kathy Bee these words are the creeds in which she lives by. Reflected in her music, TV shows and now in her new documentary (that’s currently in preproduction) Footprints Miracles Secrets & Lies, Bee’s primary objectives are to promote unity and collaboration.

The tragic happenstances that developed during 911 woke-up many Americans to the reality that America was not in a bubble of guaranteed safety. Two weeks later, Kathy Bee (who lives in Southern California) was so moved by the tragedy that she decided to lend her talents to support our troupes by celebrating her upcoming birthday in a recording studio. Bee’s friends and family, including her mother and father (a Veteran, who flew in from Ohio), supported and cheered Bee on, during the emotional recording session that lasted eight hours. The final result was the new song I’M AN AMERICAN and other patriotic songs.

Bee feels that it is important for the United States Of America to become revitalized by celebrating our collective strengths especially during trying times.

Her sentiments are reflected in the I’m An American lyrics:

DOCTOR TEACHER SOLDIER PROUDWE ALL LIVE UNDER ONE SAME CLOUD

MAN WOMAN CHILD TOOUNDER THE RED THE WHITE AND BLUE

I’M AN AMERICAN

Kathy Bee’s current project Footprints Miracles Secrets & Lies (Documentary) is a representation of Bee’s 35 years of research and firsthand knowledge of Mary Stevenson author of the world-famous, timeless poem Footprints In The Sand. In 1979, at the Palomino Night Club in Hollywood, CA, Bee met and accepted a dinner offer from Mary Stevenson Zangare. During that dinner engagement, Bee discovered an old 1939 copy of the poem Footprints In The Sand. Perplexed and assuming the poem was “Author Unknown”, Bee questioned Mary about her name appearing on the poem. After multiple questions and answers...Bee became not only convinced that Mary was the author, Bee also promised, to help Mary to reclaim her title.

Over a period of 35 years, Kathy Bee saved documents, produced and gathered never before seen footage, wrote and produced.

Is it possible to heal addiction ? Are there any biologically or neurochemical answers to PTSD?

Years of therapy and chemical treatment of addiction will tell you, the are no permanent answers to addiction. Addiction is an unsolvable disease where relapse is the norm due to genetic factors. Until now, these statements were true.

In the last five years, many new brain treatments have been developed that change they brain to be free of chemical toxicity caused by drug or alcohol addiction, if used consistently for a minimum of 60 days. The current statistics are the following:

Thirty per cent of the population of the USA has the genetic predisposition called the A I allele gene to addiction. Since every person in our research pool also had a traumatic brain injury which could possibly be linked to their addictive behavior.

In this manner :

* 92% of addicted individuals relapse on the 32 day after treatment in a rehab centre. * 85 % of people in a drug rehab environment and 12 Step program reuse drugs or alcohol after 90 days and many relapse 9-13 times where addiction counseling charges are 25-50k.

Imagine your brain as a computer. Inside this computer is a map of the entire body. This map is projected onto the ear through they body’s central nervous system. Accessing the points on the map is like using a computers keyboard

to gain entrance into this very important brain system. With our various brain therapies, we are able to test and reset circuits in the brain’s computer and stimulate neurotransmitter production.

Once accepted for care:

* We determine the numbers of traumas that have affected your life and the areas of brain capacity these areas have affected the brain , using non invasive kinesthetic protocol called Body talk PA Rama, and balance these traumas.

* Your addiction to substances will assessed and your nervous system functioning will be balanced using state of the art, non invasive technology accurately assessing the capacity of your current brain function.

*You will be checked for dysfunction in various lobes of the brain and receive appropriate Auricular therapy for these functions through a small device that measures these frequencies outside the ear.

* You will receive self mastery which combines gentle pulsing of light and sound with visualization and soothing music to synchronize and balance brain wave activity.

* You will receive Access Consciousness on the 32 points on your brain to remove negative programming, PTSD, and inserting new positive programs into the major lobes of the brain where traumatic memories are kept.

So You Say There is No Cure!

Page 59: Gi joe promo vol1 issue1 nov 2014

GI Joe Coffee Promotions | 59

* You will deceive a recommended course of NEUTRICEUTICALS, vitamins and / or exercise they suitable for your condition.

The combination of these therapies creates a complete healing for the addicted brain. The success ratio of these protocols is 85-87% for 60-90 day programs in an out patient placement with a fraction of the cost of living a rehab center.

The Mission of the Grace Center for Healing soul purpose to transform the world with healing stories that empower and inspire others to lead extraordinary lives. We create these life transformations through holistic and alternative therapies at our hospitals using blood and brain formulas, brain resonance and imaging technology with a 85% success and retention rate .

This creates transformational change with out the use of drugs as the origin of our purpose.

Our mission is also to heal the veterans, and first responders who are suffering from PTSD, relieve brain injury, autism, ADD, ADHD using new diagnostic tools, holistic non invasive therapies. We specialize in healing traumatic brain injury, addiction and compulsive disorders in children and adults by layering multiple brain technologies onto each other, leaving no room for relapse in the healed brain.

The Grace Center currently has three locations, Irvine, CA, Beverly Hills, CA and Dallas, Texas. We are expecting to build five hospitals across the country to accommodate the need for this type of healing.

Our mission at Pathways to Independence is to foster profound and productive changes in the lives of young women, who have been traumatized by their family and abandoned by society.

With the help of numerous volunteer service professionals such as doctors, dentists, therapists, car mechanics, businessmen and women, our non-profit organization gives substantial aid to young, abused women who are on the pathway to self-sufficiency. Many of the 300 women who have graduated from the program have had not just one, but many, huge obstacles to overcome, the true story below is just one of the many…

When a person does “a 180,” she or he has a made a true turn‐around. But when the circle is complete at 360°, the person goes home again in a better way. A young Orange County woman made a complete 360—she has transformed her life, and she has helped those who helped her.

Kaysie (not her real name) looked to the stars as an escape as early as five years old. That’s when her father began molesting her. “What beauty and wonder lie within the stars—to me, they were my safe haven, my saving grace. I was a little blonde‐haired, blue‐eyes girl who escaped to the stars,” she said. But Kaysie found no escape from the abuse through her stargazing or youthful writings in her diary. At ten, she developed an eating disorder. At twelve, she began to abuse drugs and alcohol.

Detox, rehab, and interventions did little to diminish Kaysie’s deep anguish over the years. “That’s the problem, you see. It’s that I’ll put myself together perfectly—the hair, the makeup, the

clothes—and act with such precise etiquette and manners due to my upbringing that no one even suspects I’m screaming bloody murder on the inside,” she wrote about her experience. But there was a breaking point after years of horror. One night, Kaysie was “so strung out” that she checked herself into the emergency room. For whatever reason, Kaysie opened up to the ER doctor. “I can’t explain it; it just came. I started talking and I couldn’t stop. I started to cry. I realized how long it had been since I’d cried…let alone told my story…I told the doctor about my dad…and about not having anywhere to go.”

The doctor allowed Kaysie to stay overnight at the ER. Nurses gave her the first food she had eaten in days. The doctor asked Kaysie to call him the next day. She was hesitant and wondered what he wanted. When she finally called, she learned that the doctor’s sister was a major fundraiser for Pathways to Independence, an Orange County-based non-profit organization. “He said that if I was serious about turning my life around and had the desire to go to school, he could get me an interview.” Pathways founder, Dave Bishop, accepted Kaysie into Pathways. Kaysie said, “I can honestly say that he, along with the ER doctor, saved my life.” Pathways began in 1991 with Bishop, a Los Alamitos Unified high school administrator, and one graduate who had no outside support. Dave and his former wife housed the young woman and charged her minimal rent, but they asked in return that she work part‐time and attend school full-time. As that young woman became independent after completing her education, others asked to be

helped. Today, Pathways has served more than 300 young women. Many of the women have suffered severe abuse, neglect, depression, and addiction. Bishop said, “The abuse of girls and women right here where we live is extraordinary.”

Pathways still keeps the basic guidelines set years ago. All Pathways clients go to school full‐time and work part--‐time. Because of the tireless effort of a fundraising group known as Friends of Pathways, and hundreds of donors, clients are able to receive housing stipends and financial help for education and other basic needs. Each client has a mentor and a therapist with whom she meets at least once a week. All the young women in the program receive services from many local professionals. Pathways’ list of volunteer providers includes over 300 with 26 dentists, 40 doctors, 4 orthodontists, 38 therapists, 2 oral surgeons, 3 attorneys, 40 mentors, etc. They presently serve 48 clients. Kaysie wrote, “I was overwhelmed by all that Pathways gave me, and it took me a long time to realize that they truly did not want anything in return other than for me to succeed. I stumbled upon Pathways at a time when I had completely given up not only on myself, but also on other people. I honestly did not know there were still good people and goodness in the world.”

With Kaysie’s endurance and Pathways’ help, “little by little, I began to come alive…It was only when I was able to see how truly broken I was—how much I had lost, how much I had endured, how much I had self‐inflicted—that I was able to put some of the pieces back together,” Kaysie said. After years of college classes, mentoring, therapy, commitment, and support, Kaysie graduated college and began a career in nursing. “At age twenty‐four, I woke up. I opened my eyes for the first time, and saw me. I saw all that I had spent years trying not to see. And even though it hurt—instead of turning away, instead of closing my eyes and going silent, I finally walked forward with my head up and eyes open.”

That’s the 180°. Now, Kaysie is a nurse in a major hospital. She attends to patients and finds real fulfillment. She is continuing her studies towards becoming a nurse practitioner. One day not long ago, Kaysie walked into her patient’s room. She used the same greeting as always—“Hello. I’m Kaysie, and I’ll be your nurse.” Kaysie looked at the patient and the patient at her. The patient was Gayle Wright, and with her was her brother, the ER doctor that helped Kaysie many years ago. Wright had suffered a stroke the day that Friends of Pathways was hosting their annual fundraiser. The tables were turned; now instead of Kaysie being broken and wounded, she was able to help the very person who originally connected her to Pathways. Kaysie’s life had come full circle --- a real 360°.

Kaysie speaks of her happiness. “Today if you see me, I’m the one with a twinkle and so much depth in my eyes because I am so fully present in my body and so excited for the life that lies ahead of me.
