The three gili islands, composed of gili Trawangan, gili Meno and gili Air are located off the northwest coast of lombok. in sasak language, "gili" means "small island. " There are more than 30 gilis around lombok but Trawangan, Meno and Air are by far the most frequently visited. Because of their proximity to the equator, they have a tropical climate throughout the year with an average air temperature of 28C and water temperatures ranging from 26 to 29C. The rainy season runs from November to April and the dry season from May to October. The gilis bathe in the Bali sea, at the convergence of the indian and Pacific Oceans and enjoy a drier

micro-climate than the rest of indonesia due in part to the fact that they are situated between two great volcanoes- Mount Rinjani on lombok and Mount Agung on Bali.like the majority of the lombok community, the inhabitants of the gili islands are primarily Muslim and each island has a mosque(s) emitting sounds of live prayer five times daily. Bahasa indonesia is the national language spoken that unites all of the country’s islands but gili locals speak sasak gili Air which is slightly different to sasak lombok.About 200 years ago, fishermen from sulawesi of Makassar, Bugis and Mandar ethnicities arrived on

the gili islands. They began to settle temporarily because of the abundance of fish in the sea and the presence of fresh water on gili Air and at that time, sectioning off a bit of land with string was enough to claim it. These otherwise nomadic people began to settle in the gilis and cultivate the land, planting peanuts, tapioca and corn whilst continuing their tradition of fishing. They sold and exchanged their produce in the markets of lombok and also traded portions of their land for livestock, rice and other much needed items not native to the islands. Coconut palms are indigenous to the gilis while mango, banana and papaya trees have been

The first western traveler to set foot on the gili islands came in 1984 to gili Air. By the mid 1990’s Bali had gained international recognition as a travel destination and the gilis began to be known as an off-the-beaten-track paradise escape. Today, the gili islands are flourishing and are attracting all types of visitors from every corner of the globe.

Over time, the people of the gili islands have adapted to a multitude of changes and cultural immersions but have managed to maintain their cultural identity. historically the people here have seen their days of hardship when during wwii, lombok and the gili islands were occupied by Japanese forces. The islands were used to contain prisoners of war and the locals endured forced labour. A hill situated on the south of Trawangan was used as a lookout post and today remnants of the bunker still remain. Trawangan derived it's name from the indonesian word "terowongan" meaning "tunnels" of which a network were dug by the occupying forces. The holes have since been filled in.

Les habitants des îles Gilis sont musulmans comme la majorité des habitants de Lombok. Chaque île possède une à plusieurs mosquées dont le son des prières est émis cinq fois par jour. Le Bahasa Indonesia est la langue nationale de l'Indonésie que tout le monde parle, mais sachez qu'aux îles Gili les habitants, entre eux, parlent le Sasak Gili Air, un dialecte, un peu différent du Sasak de Lombok. Il y a environ 200 ans, des pêcheurs de Sulawesi, des groupes ethniques Macassar, Bugis et Mandar sont arrivés sur les îles Gilis. Ils s'y sont installés car les eaux étaient très poissonneuses et aussi pour la présence d'eau douce sur Gili Air. à cette époque, il suffisait de délimiter un terrain avec une ficelle et de le nettoyer pour se l'approprier. Ces pêcheurs nomades se sont donc sédentarisés et ont commencé à cultiver des cacahuètes, du tapioca et du maïs tout en continuant la pêche. Ils vendaient ensuite leur produits ou faisaient du troc dans

les marchés de Lombok. Parfois ils échangeaient leur terre contre une vache ou d'autres produits qu'ils ne possédaient pas aux îles Gilis, notamment le riz. Les cocotiers ont toujours été présents sur les îles, les mangues, bananes et papayes sont venues plus tard.

Le premier étranger venu de l'occident est arrivé en 1984 à Gili Air et les premiers touristes, dans les années 90 lorsque Bali a acquis sa réputation mondiale ! Aujourd'hui, les îles Gilis sont de plus en plus populaires et séduisent un bon nombre de voyageurs venus de différentes horizons.

Au fil du temps, les habitants des îles Gili se sont adaptés à une multitude de changements et d'immersions culturelles, mais ont réussi à conserver leur identité. Historiquement, ils ont vécu des moments difficiles. Pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, l'île de Lombok et les Gilis étaient occupées par les forces japonaises. Les îles ont été utilisées pour maintenir les prisonniers de guerre et les habitants ont subi le travail forcé. Une colline située au sud de Trawangan a été utilisée comme poste d'observation et aujourd'hui les vestiges d'un bunker demeurent. Trawangan dérive son nom du mot indonésien "terowongan" signifiant «tunnel», un réseau a été creusé par les forces d'occupation. Les trous ont depuis été rebouchés.

when you hear about gili T you probably also hear the words "party island" yeah? Thought we should just address that straight away! gili T gained this title because it is the largest of the three northern gili islands with the most development, hence it offers the greatest abundance of everything- including nightlife. There are fantastic parties every night of the week that attract large crowds of people from all different walks of life and every corner of the globe. Nightly features start with a sizzling local food market and advance into live music, beach parties and DJ's. There's also the option of watching movies screened at an open air beach "theatre." The rumored growth of Trawangan from a backpacker island into something of a glam island is supported by the unveiling

of new upscale boutiques, restaurants, resorts, spas, and now a heli-pad, however, it remains a hub of charm for a wide spectrum of travelers. it's an iconic island of variety with numerous options for every budget/lifestyle for eating, sleeping (backpacker dorms to luxury villas), entertainment and activities. gili T has extraordinarily beautiful beaches and shimmering ocean waters of crystal-clear visibility for diving and snorkeling. This island boasts some of the finest coral gardens and the widest range of dive centers with the best socializing opportunities. Although it is predominately known as a party island, gili T has much more to it and venturing away from the densely developed east coast, you can find a plethora of vacant beaches. Renting a bicycle is a great way to see the island, bearing in mind there are some sandy patches! seeing how life works here can be very eye-opening: it's not an escape from reality- just a slightly different one but understandably surreal nonetheless! There are several conservation organizations based here including gili Eco Trust (gET) and The gili shark foundation- ask around (try dive centers) about how you can get involved! As you may know- there is no motorized transport in the gilis and what a soothing break that can be! surfing is popular off the south and it's not unwise to speak to locals about the break. for a supreme viewpoint walk up the hill on the south that was previously used as a lookout during ww ii.

Demandez autour de vous, dans les centres de plongée comment vous impliquer ! Pour un point de vue suprême, marchez jusqu'à la colline au sud, vous y trouverez un vestige (une batterie d'artillerie) de la seconde guerre mondiale.

Lorsque vous entendez parler de Gili T, vous entendez souvent dire que c'est l'île de la fête, n'est-ce pas ? La plus grande et la plus développée des trois îles Gili a gagné cette réputation car elle offre un large éventail de tout y compris pour la vie nocturne. Il y a des fêtes tous les soirs de la semaine qui attirent de grandes foules de tous les coins du globe ! Commencez par faire un petit tour sur la place du marché pour goûter les délicieux plats locaux, puis laissez-vous tenter par le son des concerts live, des DJ résidents, dans les différents bars ou sur la plage ! Il est aussi possible de visionner des films en plein air. Trawangan est l'îlot du "Glam" avec ses resorts, ses spas, ses restaurants chics, ses boutiques et son héliport ! C'est la plaque tournante de charme pour un grand nombre de voyageurs. Trawangan est l'île du choix et convient à tous les budgets et à tous les styles de vie. Que vous soyez "routards" ou que vous recherchiez un logement de grand standing, tout est possible. La nourriture est très diverse et internationale, vous aurez aussi un grand choix d'activités et de divertissements ! Gili T possède de très belles plages aux eaux limpides et cristallines idéales pour la plongée et la balade aquatique en masque, palme, tuba (snorkeling).

The sands are white and soft beneath your feet and you can relax on vacant stretches of beach lined with coconut trees. Meno is the real escape to paradise where you can fill your days with activities like diving, snorkeling, surfing or just simply taking in the tranquil views. This island is a treasure of local lifestyle where time seems to bend and life seems to slow down. it is the least developed island where you can completely relax amongst abundant nature- Meno is a holiday within a holiday. here you can walk or take a cidomo (horse&cart) to attractions such as the salt lake where it's possible to spot rare blue kingfishers and the elusive island monitor lizard, or venture to the eerie remnants of an abandoned resort- where a popular wreck-dive site exists just offshore. There are no bicycle rentals in Meno but it's possible to walk the island in an hour. gili Meno offers great selections of local and western restaurants and most places serve a variety of the two. There is a variety of accommodation on Meno and your options range from backpacker dorms, beachfront and village bungalows to luxury villas, apartments and resorts. There is also open air baruga-style accommodation for the true outdoorsmen- er, and women! Other points of interest on Meno include a bird park and the turtle conservation pools (which run entirely on donations). This island is primarily popular amongst couples and those seeking a more enlightening, recharging time. Yoga and meditation are up there with diving and honeymooning for making gili Meno an ideal travel destination. in the past, Meno was said to have a mosquito problem but this is not the case- in the wet season there are normal levels of what you would expect in a tropical place, perhaps even less, and in the dry season- tidak apa apa- no problem!!

abandonné, Bounty, ou de la populaire épave (en plongée) qui gît au large de la côte. Il n'y a pas de location de vélos à Meno mais il est possible de faire le tour de l'île en une heure. Gili Meno propose une grande sélection de restaurants locaux et occidentaux et la plupart des lieux servent une variété des deux. Il y a aussi les warungs (restaurants traditionnels) pour les populaires plats locaux comme le Nasi Campur. Il y a aussi plusieurs options d'hébergements : Baruga en plein air, bungalows en bord de mer, villas de luxe et resorts haut de gamme. Autres points d'intérêt sur Meno, le parc aux oiseaux (Bird Park) et le centre de conservation des tortues (Meno Turtle Conservation), essentiellement

financé par des dons. Cette île est surtout appréciée par les couples en lune de miel et les personnes qui recherchent une détente absolue. D'ailleurs, pourquoi pas essayer le yoga ! Meno est une destination idéale pour la méditation. Dans le passé, Meno avait une mauvaise réputation à cause de la présence des moustiques. Il n'en est rien. Il est tout à fait normal, dans un pays au climat tropical d'en croiser quelques uns, surtout en saison des pluies mais en saison sèche Tidak apa apa ! (pas de problème !)

BOUNTYAND iTs sUNk PlATfORM...

BOUNTY, also known as Meno's wreck, is more a platform than a wreck, starting at 8-10 meters at the top and has a bottom depth of 18 meters. This pier used to be used for the boat traffic until it sank around ten years ago. situated in the south-east of gili Meno, the Bounty attracts visitors for its abundance of corals and the marine life which settle on it. During the dive you will possibly meet some sweetlips, batfish, groupers, emperor and royal angelfish, parrotfish, scorpionfish and maybe even baby sharks. with a current drifting north to south during the dry season, you would start in the south of Meno slope, in the shallow part where the turtles are. Before finishing your dive on the Bounty head to the east, when you reach 23 meters into the valley you will find a corals

head where a school of glassfish live. This site is suitable for all levels, even discovery dives limited at 12 meters can be done on the "wreck".Le BOUNTY, aussi appelé l'Epave de Meno, est davantage une plateforme qu'une épave, atteignant les 18 mètres de profondeur maximum et les 8-10 mètres sur le dessus. Ce ponton servait au traffic de bateaux jusqu'à ce qu'il coule il y a une dizaine d'années. Situé au sud-est de Gili Meno, le Bounty attire la curiosité des plongeurs pour son abondance de coraux et pour la vie marine qui s'y est installée depuis. Au cours de cette plongée vous aurez la possibilité de voir des gaterins, platax, mérous, poissons anges empereurs et royaux, des poissons perroquets bicolores, poissons scorpions et peut-être même des bébés requins. Avec un courant nord-sud en saison sèche, vous commencerez au sud de Meno Slope, dans la partie peu profonde, où vivent les tortues. Plus à l'est, en s'enfonçant dans la vallée (23m), vous trouverez une patate de corail dans laquelle sont nichés des poissons de verre, avant de venir finir votre plongée sur le Bounty. Ce site est donc accessible à tous les niveaux, puisque même les baptêmes limités à 12 mètres peuvent profiter de "l'épave".

Crocodilefish are a species of flatfish known for their amazing camouflage. Juveniles have a black body with a white line crossing the pectoral fins, whereas mature individuals have a brownish/grey body that can change shade according to the colour of the surrounding environment. Crocodilefish have a long and flat head covered in dorsal spines, which resembles the head of a crocodile. Just like their terrestrial homonym, crocodilefish have globular eye, an ugly appearance and are ambush hunters. They are usually between 5 and 35 cm of length, but they can grow up to 50 cm.Les poissons crocodile sont une espèce de poissons plats connus pour leur camouflage fantastique. Le corps des juvéniles est noir avec un trait blanc qui traverse les nageoires pectorales, alors que les adultes ont une livrée vert-marron qui peut changer de tonalité en fonction des couleurs de l'environnement. Le poisson crocodile a une tête longue et aplatie couverte d'épines dorsales et qui ressemble à la tête d'un crocodile. You can see turtles, all kinds of fish, blue-spotted stingrays... let yourself drift with the current, whilst being careful because sometimes it can be very strong! You can rent the equipment very easily on all three islands. Another alternative is a snorkeling trip - a day out on a boat. You leave in the morning around 9am for a full circuit of the gilis, visiting the best snorkeling spots of the three islands. You stop for lunch and finish about 4pm. Gili T, j'étais étonnée. Peu après, on était sur la plage pour la séance de photos, à rigoler et s'amuser. Ils nous ont emmené sur différents sites où la visibilité était excellente et il nous ont appris à nager avec la queue de sirène. Se transformer en une sirène séduisante est facile et rapide ! On a fait un peu de battements de dauphin et on était prêtes pour la séance de photos dans les eaux transparentes ! Je me suis sentie encore plus privilégiée lorsque j'ai appris que les queues de sirène sont bénies avec une prière hindou balinaise avant d'être utilisées. On dit que cette bénédiction entraine l'amour, la chance et le bonheur et c'est surement le meilleur vœu que j'aurais pu recevoir avant mon mariage !

And by the time we were on the beach shooting and swimming, laughter and fun took over! of Mount Batur!

Culminating at 1717m above sea level, Mount Batur is not the highest volcano in Bali but it is nonetheless great! located about 30km north of Ubud, the site has some wonderful surprises in store, including many unusual walks!

season: April to November

To get to Mount Batur, you can book a tour directly in Ubud, which is an hour’s drive away. You can get there by bemo from the bus station in Denpasar, by scooter, or with a private driver from anywhere in Bali. There is accommodation in kedisan and Toya Bungkah beside lake Batur.

Mount Batur is an easily accessible volcano. if you’re sporty and adventurous you’ll choose the early morning ascent to watch the sunrise at the summit! it takes 3-4 hours for a round journey. Make sure to get all the information and advice from the hPPgB (official guides’ office). The scenery is breathtaking in the first light of day. Mount Rinjani on lombok looms in the distance, while Mount Agung seems to overlap with the peak of Abang! if you like walking, you can leave from 3 separate towns in the south (Tampaksiring, Bangli or Rendang), which offer 3 circuits where you cross rice fields, vegetable crops, forests, valleys, small villages, and more. The three itineraries all lead to the city of Penelokan where there’s a wonderful view of the caldera! Again, here you can take different roads to kintamani where you’ll find the largest market in the region or songan on the northern end of the lake where the beautiful temple Pura Ulun Danu is hidden away. in kedisan, it’s also possible to walk around the peaceful waters of the lake and rent a bike for tours around the craters.

Le Batur est un volcan explosif, qui veut dire « mont de feu » en Indonésien. Il porte en lui la colère de ses éruptions qui lui valent ce décor si singulier marqué par les sillons de magma refroidis sur son flanc ! Le Mont Batur est en effet toujours en activité dont la dernière éruption connue fut en 2000 mais resta sans danger. Celle de 1917 par contre restera dans les esprits de chacun et ravagea tout le village en s’arrêta miraculeusement aux portes du temple Pura Ulun Danu Batur. Ce temple est dédié à la déesse du lac Batur, Ida Betari Dewi Danu. Il est l’un des plus importants temple de Bali.

This word does not indicate the speed the meal will be served and it can be a fast food restaurant or a slow pace one according to what you decide to eat. if you go for nasi campur (mix rice), you will just have to pick what you want from the dishes on display and eat it right away. if you go for the warung best sellers such as mie goreng (fried noodles), nasi goreng (fried rice) or soto ayam (chicken soup), you will have the time to crack into a couple of krupuk (rice crackers) and burn your lips sipping a teh manis panas (sweetened hot tea) before you get served. in case you are daring and order some western dish on the menu, you may end up spending the whole day in the warung and eventually become a member of the local family who run the place!

Warung est un des mots en indonésien que vous entendrait le plus souvent et qui signifie “petit restaurant”. En Malaisie et en Indonésie le warung est une institution qui indique de la nourriture locale à bon marche et dans une ambiance familiale. Le mot n'indique pas la vitesse dans laquelle on sert le repas et il peut s'agir de restauration rapide ou lente en fonction de ce que vous décidez de manger. Si vous prenez un "nasi campur" (riz mélangé), il vous suffira de choisir parmi les petites assiettes en vitrine et vous mangerez tout de suite. Si vous choisissez les best-sellers du warung tels quels les "mie goreng" (nouilles sautées), le "nasi goreng" ou le "soto ayam" (soupe de poulet), vous aurez le temps de craquer quelques "kerupuk" (crackers de riz) et de vous bruler les lèvres en buvant du "teh manis panas" (té chaud sucré) avant d'être servi. Si vous vous sentez aventureux et vous commandez des plats occidentaux qui sont dans le menu, vous risquez de passer toute la journée dans le warung pour finalement devenir un membre à part entière de la famille qui gère le restaurant !

METhOD - PREPARATiONPeel and cut into cubes the carrots and manioc. Boil 1l of water and cook the vegetables inside. Peel and cut small the onions, garlic, chili, curcuma and ginger. in a pan, warm the coconut oil and fry the onions and garlic. Add the spices, let brown before pouring the coconut milk, salt and pepper. Mix together and pour the sauce on the vegetables.

Eplucher et découper en cubes les carottes et le manioc. Faire bouillir 1L d’eau, puis faire cuire les légumes pendant 15 minutes dedans. Eplucher et couper finement l’oignons, l’ail, le piment, le curcuma et le gingembre. Dans une poêle, faire chauffer l’huile de coco, puis faire revenir les oignons et l’ail. Ajouter les épices, laisser rissoler avant d’ajouter le lait de coco, le sel et le poivre. Mélanger puis verser la sauce sur les légumes.

up in very bad condition with a plastic straw stuck in its nose and we cannot count how many dead fishes are found with plastic in their stomach. Plastic straws, which are non reusable are a disaster because a lot are thrown away on

beaches and water. so let’s not get rid of this little things and re-use it as decorative photo easel !On ne le dira jamais assez, mais les déchets plastique déversés dans l’océan sont des dangers redoutables pour l’éco-système, spécialement pour les tortues de mer. On a pu voir il y a quelques temps cette vidéo où une tortue du Costa Rica a été retrouvée en état de grande souffrance avec une paille en plastique coincée dans les voies nasales et on ne compte plus le nombre de poissons retrouvés morts avec du plastique dans l’estomac. Les pailles à usage unique sont un véritable fléau, car jetées en grande quantités sur les plages et dans l’eau. Alors ne nous débarrassons plus de ces petits objets et réutilisons-les comme support photo !

t hose who climbed this volcano sometimes say that they have heard strange voices at night while camping. They can hear some complaints, whistles and whispers that sound supernatural. if you ever hear these sounds one day while staying on Rinjani volcano, don’t be scared, it is just the spirits of the mountain! They look like small bright pebbles, with crackling voices

that evokes the murmur of the waves, which reminds of their marine origin. You know, the sea likes to listen to traveler ’s conversations while they are on a boat or on a beach. when the sea hears that you have planned to climb Mount Rinjani, she will send some of her children to follow you discreetly. These spirits are quite harmless; you will be their guide until the top of Mount Rinjani, where lives their big brother, segara Anak lake, which means in indonesian "the son of the sea". You will walk for days, followed by these discrete spirits who like to tell stories to each other at night. sometimes you can even hear them arguing! But don’t be afraid; once you’ve reached the top of the volcano, go for a swim in the pristine water of the lake. That way, you will allow these spirits to reunite with their families, and you will also be able to get rid of them...

Ceux qui ont fait l’ascension de ce volcan disent parfois avoir entendu des voix la nuit, alors qu’ils campaient. Des plaintes, des sifflements, des chuchotements qui ont quelque chose de surnaturel. N’ayez pas peur, ce sont juste les esprits de la montagne! Ils ressemblent à des petits galets brillants, leur voix qui crépite évoque le murmure des vagues, ce qui rappelle leur origine maritime. Vous savez, la mer aime écouter les conversations des voyageurs lorsqu’ils sont en bateau ou sur la plage. Lorsqu’elle entend que vous avez prévu de faire l’ascension du Mont Rinjani, elle envoie quelques uns de ses enfants vous suivre discrètement. Ce sont des petits esprits tout à fait inoffensifs, que vous allez guider jusqu’à leur grand frère, le lac Segara Anak qui signifie en indonésien « le fils de la mer », qui vit tout en haut du mont Rinjani. Vous marcherez des jours, suivis par ces esprits discrets, qui la nuit venue se raconteront des histoires. Parfois vous les entendrez même se chamailler ! Mais n’ayez pas peur : une fois arrivé en haut du volcan, baignez vous dans l’eau claire du lac : vous permettrez ainsi à ces esprits de retrouver leur famille, et de vous en débarrasser aussi...

On gili Air public boats leave to lombok starting at 7:30am. Meno to lombok, twice a day, at 8am and 3pm. And on gili T starting at 7am until 5pm. Sur Gili Air les bateaux publics partent vers Lombok à partir de 7h30. Sur Gili Meno, deux fois par jour à 8h et 15h. Sur Gili T à partir de 7h du matin jusqu'à 17 h.

wATERDrinking water in the gilis is imported from Narmada in lombok. it is not advised to drink tap water. L'eau potable des îles Gilis est importée de Lombok à Narmada. Il est déconseillé de boire l'eau du robinet.

ElECTRiCiTYsometimes there are power cuts on the 3 islands but the resorts have generators.
