DRIVER EDUCATION FOR TEENS

Sign your teen up now! Driver Education classes teach lifetime skills proven to reduce crashes and save teen lives. Driver Education dramatically reduces preventable car crashes.

In order to receive an ODOT Certification Card, students are required to have a minimum of 30 hours classroom instruction, 12 hours of behind-the-wheel (½ driving, ½ observation) and 5 hours of home practice time. Students must attend all classes, turn in all assignments, and pass final exams. Under a new program

from DMV and ODOT, high school students (under 18 at last class) who successfully complete this approved teen driver education course will not have to take a drive test at DMV when it is time to get their provisional license. Any other DMV requirement must still be met.

Tuition is $299 (classroom materials included). Please Note: Driver Education is a State subsidized program, only funded for students with permits and not for

licensed drivers. If a student has a license, obtains their license while taking the class, is 18 or older before completing the class, an additional $200 will be charged. Driver education is a part of the process for obtaining a provisional license. 18 year olds do not have a provisional license. That is why the State does not cover students 18 years of age or older.

There is a $75 subsidy program for students that qualify for the Free/Reduced lunch program or Oregon SNAP/TANF benefits. Students must provide proof of benefits in order to qualify for reduced tuition. (Benefit applies only to students under 18 years of age and without a license at last class.)

First class includes an ODOT required parent/student orientation covering class and behind-the-wheel expectations, new laws and driving techniques, and time for questions. Drive time is in addition to the classroom portion and meets for two hours, once per week (½ driving, ½ observation) for 6 weeks. Drive time will be scheduled for after school and/or weekends, and times available vary from term to term. It is highly recommended that students have had at least 10 hours of behind-the-wheel experience before first drive time. Please bring your permit to the first and last class and all drive times.

Student conduct is expected to be the same as during any school sponsored activity. Failure to do so may result in exclusion from the program and/or discipline as outlined in the student handbook. ACCOMMODATIONS NOTICE: If you have special needs or a disability that require accommodations in order for you to attend or participate in a school meeting or event, contact the Office of Special Services at (503) 655-2777 at least 48 hours in advance if possible.
