PROJECT OBJECTIVES
PROJECT ACTIVITIES
ABOUT THE PROJECTDoing Research is a pilot project launched by GDN to develop a comprehensive understanding of the factors that influence the organization of social science research, its quality, quantity and social relevance in developing countries. The project is supporting seven multi-disciplinary research teams to investigate the research environment and develop a framework of assessment in 11 countries around the world.
Understanding the factors that impact the ability of researchers to undertake good quality research. Identifying and developing objective measures (both qualitative and quantitative) of key elements of the research environment that have significant impact on the ability to train researchers in developing countries to undertake quality research and communicate it effectively to a broad range of stakeholders.
Exposing important shortcomings and barriers to research to the relevant stakeholders including academia, policy-makers, civil society and donor organizations in order to bring into mainstream, issues related to the research environment, research support and funding and the demand for it as one of the key policy concerns in developing countries.
Deriving a systematic framework to compare the research environment across countries and across time.
Project conceptualization: Reviewing existing state of knowledge and identifying areas of contribution; outreach with different stakeholders; development of Project terms of reference;
Competitive selection of grantees: Seven teams selected out of 180 applications received through rigorous process of technical vetting;
Peer review workshops: To foster an environment for cross-learning, real-time and hands-on interaction with international experts to sharpen focus on research and communication;
Technical guidance: A panel of External Advisors and Project Steering committee members to provide technical guidance and advise to the research teams;
Synthesis of lessons: A synthesis of learning from the existing country studies will provide a framework for expansion of the project to other countries;
Active research communication and outreach: Policy dialogues and roundtables to ensure policy relevance and research uptake; use of traditional and alternate media for large scale dissemination and engagement of strategic stakeholders.
