Upcoming Lenten Sermon and Study Series: The Cup of Our Life: A Guide for Spiritual Growth by Joyce Rupp Ash Wednesday is March 1 st it marks the beginning of six weeks of preparation as we journey toward Holy Week, the crucifixion and Easter morning. This year we will use Joyce Rupps book The Cup of our Life as our framework for contemplation, prayer, study and our corporate worship experiences. Here Ms. Rupp shares her thoughts about the cup and spiritual growth: "... I have found the cup to be a powerful teacher for my inner life. The ordinariness of the cup reminds me that my personal transformation occurs in the common crevices of each day. The cup is an apt image for the inner process of growth. The cup has been a reminder of my spiritual thirst. As I've held it, filled it, drunk from it, emptied it and washed it, I've learned that it is through my ordinary human experiences that my thirst for God is quenched. In the cup I see life, with its emptiness, fullness, brokenness, flaws, and blessings. A cup is a container for holding something. Whatever it holds has to eventually be emptied out so that something more can be put into it. I have learned that I cannot always expect my life to be full. There has to be some emptying, some pouring out, if I am to make room for the new. The spiritual journey is like that—a constant process of emptying and filling, of giving and receiving, of accepting and letting go. “….the main purpose of a cup is to have its contents given away. She continues: The cup has taught me many valuable lessons for my spiritual growth. I have learned that my life holds stale things that need to be discarded and that sometimes my life feels as wounded as a broken cup. I have learned that I have flaws, chips, and stains, just as any well-used cup may have, but that these markings of a well- traveled life need not prevent me from being a valuable gift for others. I have learned that the contents of my life are meant to be constantly given and shared in a generous gesture of compassion, just as the main purpose of a cup is to have its contents given away. I have especially learned gratitude for all those moments when the unexpected has transformed my life into an abundant cup of blessings. I hope you will join us for worship each week, as well as purchase and use the book for your personal growth, as we grow in our relationship with God together. May our cups be overflowing with love! The Cup of Our Life: A Guide for Spiritual Growth by Joyce Rupp

Ash Wednesday is March 1st — it marks the beginning of six weeks of preparation as we journey toward Holy Week, the crucifixion and Easter morning. This year we will use Joyce Rupp’s book The Cup of our Life as our framework for contemplation, prayer, study and our corporate worship experiences. February 3, 2017 Registration and Session 1—1:00 PM

If you’ve lost someone close to you or know someone who has, please join us in the Fellowship Hall on Friday, February 3th at 1:00 p.m. for GriefShare registration and Session One as we begin

our 10th cycle of sessions. GriefShare is a 13-week seminar support group offering a weekly video and small group discussion as well as a

participants guide/journal. Most people quickly feel comfortable and accepted in their GriefShare group. Group members discover there are others who have the same kind of feelings they do and who understand the hurt they feel and the loss they have experienced. Each leader in our GriefShare Group has experienced a similar loss.

If you’re unable to come on February 3th, you are welcome to begin attending the GriefShare group at any point. Each session is “self-contained,” so you do not have to attend in sequence. Sessions 2 through 13 will be held on Fridays from 1:30 – 3:30 pm in the choir room. If you have any questions or would like more information, please contact Jim McNeill at (910) 393-9548 (cell) or (910) 579-2405 (home).

Attendance

Congratulations to the 18 recipients of a 2016 Reading Certificate at our January Prayer Breakfast. Although it didn't meet my lofty goal of 25, our church remains one of the “readingest” groups in our District.

I'm hoping that one of your New Year's resolutions was to complete the reading program this year! If you heard Stefanie's sermon on January 1, she alluded to the fact that many resolutions have gone by the wayside by February. If yours did, it is not too late to continue. You have 6 more months to read just 5 books. There are still many cool, rainy days before spring—days just right for reading! Please contact me, Marie Wilcox (575-1076) with any questions

Stroke Talk February at 1:30 pm

"For God so loved the world . . .” John 3:16 Join us Sunday, February 5th at the 9:30 & 11:00 services as

our Joyful Noise Children's Choir sing songs that remind us that Jesus loves ALL the children of the world. We have a beautiful group of children with wonderful voices!

After last year's successful Seaside Friends in Concert, I have invited a few more of my "friends" to join me for Seaside Friends in Concert II. This time, three of my "friends" just happen to be former students who are currently professional singers. Joining them is our own Linda Ladrick. So mark your calendars for Sunday, March 19th at 4:00 PM for a concert of beautiful music followed by a delicious reception. Tickets are $10 and will be on sale Monday, February 13th. All proceeds will go to the Sanctuary Choir's trip to perform at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in NYC in May. See detailed flyer insert.

May love be our message this February and every month!

With a voice of singing, Kathryn

Calling All Seaside S-P-E-L-L-E-R-S!

Perhaps you remember Mary Jane’s recent sermon where she called out “Hey Church! Come and be a part of serving our community!” If you are interested

in answering that call, your opportunity is here. The Brunswick County Literacy Council’s Annual Adult Spelling Bee is scheduled for Tuesday, May 23rd at Brunswick Community College. Seaside has been a HUGE supporter of this wonderful event for many years by sending a team (or even MORE!) to serve as spellers. Our incredible Outreach Mission has historically covered the fee. We need 2 to 4 folks to serve on two-person spelling teams. The event is GREAT fun and helps support BCLC’s mission of helping county residents who desire to improve their lives by becoming more literate and being a stronger force in the lives of ALL of us who live, work and play in Brunswick County. M-A-N-Y T-H-A-N-K-S!

“Thinking, Being, Doing” – A Word From Your Director of Formation Stefanie Riley

Do you see that little logo next to this article? Three circles, interconnected, with

the words “Thinking, Being, Doing” inside of them. What does that mean? What does that

have to do with spiritual formation? Well, these three little circles, and three little words, are

a great summation of the entire spiritual formation process in our lives. “Thinking”: The

technical word we use for this is “orthodoxy,” meaning “correct doctrine/belief.” The

“Thinking” part of our spiritual formation comes from our study of

Scriptures, theology and traditions. This is the cerebral, or thinking, part of our discipleship.

“Being:” The other word we use for this is “orthopathy,” meaning “correct feeling.” This is

the part of our formation that deals with the transformation of who we are from the inside

out based on the Spirit’s work in our lives. It comes from spending time with God, from

“being” in God’s presence. This is the emotional, or feeling, part of our discipleship.

“Doing”: Finally, we look at “orthopraxy,” meaning “correct practice.” This is the part of our formation where our knowledge about

God and our relationship with God compel us to service for God. It is the action, or hands and feet, part of our discipleship. You

will notice that all three of these circles are connected and overlap. Full and complete discipleship cannot occur unless all three of

these formative practices are put into place into the life of a disciple.

Bible study is wonderful, but what does it mean if the student spends no time with the One whom she is studying? Meditating in

God’s presence is transformative, but what good does it do for one to stay in his prayer closet all day while the world outside is

dying? Missions and ministry are the calling of each disciple, but done outside the knowledge and presence of God, it can become

nothing more than charity work. But when disciples find the balance between Thinking, Being and Doing in their lives, the Holy

Spirit is then able to do the work of transformation both in the lives of followers and throughout the whole word in which they live.

I encourage you to make a point of finding that balance in your own spiritual formation. Think about God, Be changed by God, Act

for God!

This Month’s Book Recommendation: “Benefit of the Doubt” by Dr. Greg Boyd

Do you ever have questions about your faith? I don’t mean, “How many animals were on the ark?” More like, “How do I even know any of this is real?” Do you ever worry that those questions may drive you far from God? Are you ever tempted to just give it all up completely? In his book, Benefit of the Doubt, Greg Boyd shares his own stories of struggle in the Christian faith and offers words of encouragement that nothing, not even your doubt, can separate us from the love of God. He explores the places from which our doubt comes, and helps refocus our worship back onto God himself, and not our beliefs about God. This book is a very meaningful, but easy read for anyone struggling to reconcile their doubt “about” God with their faith “in” God.

You Can Have Pancakes for Supper on Shrove Tuesday!

We hope you will join us on Tuesday, February 28th for our annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper provided by our MYF students. The supper begins at 5:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall where you will find plenty of pancakes (and we promise,

even more blueberry pancakes), hash browns, bacon, sausage, applesauce, juice and coffee. There is no cost for the meal but donations will be received to benefit the Seaside MYF. Come with an appetite and celebrate Shrove Tuesday with your Seaside family!

United Methodist Men Meet February 6th at 6:30 pm

Helen Keller’s words apply to the continued success of Seaside’s Country Fair. A few good people are needed to serve as Country Fair Event Leaders.

Yard Sale has changed from one “mega” event to three manageable areas: Housewares, Holiday Decorations, Traditional Yard Sale Leaders are needed for each of the smaller events. Training and support will be provided.

Following the guidance and direction of the current leader is a great way to ease into a leadership role. Each year Wayne Matthews has organized his dedicated group of men who handled the weekly pickups at donor’s homes.

Wayne will continue to be the leader of pickup/delivery and directing the logistics of the 2017 Country Fair set up but would like to mentor someone who would eventually take over for him. To find out more please call the 2017 Country Fair Co-chairs, Kim or Carolyn Loucks. Contact Wayne Matthews regarding “shadowing” him—Seaside will begin accepting donations soon. The above roles are critical to the success of Seaside’s Country Fair! “Together we can do so much.”

Circles meet every other month—

Consider joining one that fits your

schedule

March Newsletter Deadline—February 15th

Seaside Staff: Mary Jane Wilson-Parsons Family: I was born and raised in Thomasville, GA., just 30 minutes from Tallahassee, FL. My parents grew up in the panhandle region of Florida and most of my relatives live in Florida. My father and step-mom live in Thomasville, and my sister is an Occupational Thera-pist in Sylva, NC. We have 2 sons: Wesley is a Civil Engineer, currently recovering from an on-the-job accident last May and living in Williamsburg, VA, and Thomas, a Computer Science Engineer living in

Raleigh. Schools: I graduated from Young Harris College, LaGrange College, and The Divinity School, Duke

University (Master of Divinity). I did additional graduate work in Pastoral Counseling and Psychotherapy at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, Northwestern University, Evanston, IL. I am an ordained Elder in the United Meth-odist Church, North Carolina Conference.

Work: My first church job was at 16 years old – I played piano for worship and worked with the youth at a small UMC in Thomasville. After seminary I served two small congregations in Thomas County, then a church in the suburbs of Albany, then co-pastored with Scott at a county seat church in Hawkinsville, GA. Upon returning to NC I worked as a Hurricane Recovery coordinator for the annual conference, then began working with Albemarle Hopeline as a counse-lor and educator. Shortly thereafter I was hired by the annual conference as Sexual Ethics coordinator for the annual conference. I continued with both jobs until moving to Sunset Beach.

How long at Seaside? We are in our eighth year as Co-Pastors of Seaside UMC. What do I do? I plan and lead worship, preach on Sundays and at funerals, do pastoral care, and attend lots of

meetings! I am convener for our weekly Congregational Care ministry meeting, where several ministry groups and staff members coordinate care for all in our congregation who need special attention for various reasons. Currently I help coordinate evangelism and witness ministries, including new members. A lot of what ministers do is confidential! Most ministers work long hours, not just one hour on Sunday! Saturdays are final prepping for Sunday. My day off is today—Monday—I’ve been at the church since 9:00 am! One thing about the ministry is that the work is never, ever done – there’s always one more call or visit, one more email to send, one more sermon not yet written. And in these days where everyone is so accessible via cell phones, text and email – putting boundaries around the work is difficult.

Most challenging part of my job: I am not fond of multiple-page financial reports, especially if I have to gen-erate them.

Pets: One cat, Kiki, and a cocker spaniel named Millie. To unwind: I love to create art of various kinds—I have an art room upstairs that I have not been able to

enjoy for several months. When I retire, I’m going upstairs and I’m only coming back downstairs for bodily necessities! Most people don’t know that I can break up a fistfight and that I love to run a chain saw.

Permanent Endowment Special Gift Program Committee

During 2016 your Seaside United Methodist Church Permanent Endowment & Special Gift Program Committee published a new Guide for Gift Planning booklet, and produced and shared two videos to help all of us better understand our giving options. In the first video Ray & Wanda Wiltbank walked us through the

new guide and how we can leave a Legacy that meets our giving plan and goals for the future. They explained how giving back will make a real difference in the lives of our children, our friends and our community.

During the second video Jim Story talked about leaving a legacy to recognize the impact that God has had on our lives. Jim highlighted that we can design a gift that benefits the specific ministries and programs that we love and care about such as local missions, church facilities, the music ministry, just to name a few.

We encourage you to review the booklet, consider the legacy you would like to leave, and work with your financial planner or an attorney who specializes in estate planning. You may contact either of our co-pastors or any of the following members of the PESGC: Ralph Gardner (Chair), Erdeen Zimmerlee (Treasurer), Richard Walker, Marvin Ragland, Gene Steadman, Pastors, Trustees Chair and Church Council Chair.

United Women’s Game Day, February 21st 2121stA

The United Methodist Men will hold their next monthly meeting on Monday, February 6 at 6:30 pm. Come and enjoy a good dinner with great fellowship. The UMM thanks all those who supported the Change for Changing Lives fundraiser which was conducted February-December 2016. A total of $1570 was raised for local charities.

We’re still looking for one of our UMM members to step up and accept the challenge of serving as Vice President of UMM. Please prayerfully consider serving so all the officer positions are filled for 2017.

United Methodist Men are looking forward to another great year of fellowship and serving our church and community. We’re always looking for more men to participate by joining us at meetings and working on our projects. Consider bringing a friend or neighbor as a guest to our next meeting in January. They do not have to be a member of Seaside UMC to join our group as we welcome all members of our community.

Seaside's United Methodist Men invite you to

Greg Rowles in Concert Saturday, February 25, 2017 at 6:30 pm

Enjoy gospel and country music provided by Greg Rowles & Friends. Tickets are $12.00 and can be purchased Sunday mornings outside the Fellowship Hall. Net proceeds from the Concert go back into our community through the various organizations the United Methodist Men support.

The Worship Ministry Team is at work preparing for the Lenten Season, Holy Week and Easter. Easter is late this year, April 16th. Please read the insert included in this newsletter for more information on Worship Services and times. Don’t forget that Ash Wednesday is March 1st.

Have you ever served as an Acolyte or Crucifer? If you attend the 8:00 am or 11:00 am service, you’re familiar with the opening processional to the altar, led by the Cross and the Light. If you are interested in learning more about either of these roles, please contact Penny Sue Spohn at 910-386-7662 (8:00) or Marlen Mapes at 910-575-6007.

God sends grace and blessings filled with so much care, love, and support to each one of us at Seaside United Methodist Church. He holds and lifts up, not just us, but the whole world in His hands!
