This February, Village on the Park got to participate in something we don't get to do very often! As the Winter Olympics was happening on the other side of the world....it was also happening right here at VOP! Gold, Silver, and Bronze metals were awarded to residents and staff who volunteered for many events including the Biathlon, the Luge, a Hockey tournament, a snowball toss, and Bobsled races! Our mighty Executive Director, Bill, ran the torch in to get us started, and all of our spectators had a blast cheering for their favorites. Just like to the real Olympics brings the world together for a common purpose, our afternoon

was full of fun and fellowship and included not only our Independent residents, but also many from our Assisted Living and Memory Care halls and all of our employees as well! We snacked on U.S.A. cupcakes and even ate the flames from right out of the torch! (Cheddar Popcorn!) We have so much fun around here, and we hope that you never miss out on any of it! In February our gold was around our necks and this month you'll find in it a pot under a rainbow as we celebrate all things Irish! You just never know what might happen, but we can guarantee that you' ll have a great time finding out!

March 2018Village on the Park

We all have special talents that are unique to us. Talents are even more special when they are shared with others? this is where Carolyn Earles shines at Village on the Park! You may know her as the ?Card Lady? or recognize her beautiful smile when she hands you a personalized birthday card. Carolyn started making special cards several years ago for her family. After moving to VOP and meeting her ?new family?, she decided she would make a card for each resident?s birthday. Now understand, we

have 148 Independent Living apartments, some living with spouses? .that is a lot of cards! (She estimates that she has made over 700 cards for us!) She has quite the setup, her computer is connected with her TV and she sits on her sofa with the keyboard and works away! ?I enjoy it so much, it makes me happy. It is my service to God, I can?t do a lot of other things but hopefully I can make others days brighter.? What a ministry she has! She creates most of her own cards by making up the

sayings and poems to make each card individual, then scours the newsletters for each person?s picture. Carolyn says that everyone is ?So appreciative, they love them, especially if I am able to put their picture on the card.? When speaking with Carolyn, you can see in her face how much this means to her. ?It thril ls me more than it does them!? We are pretty thril led to be the recipients of her kindness!

Much Better Than Hallmark!

Mind, Body & Soul National Nutrit ion Month® is a nutrit ion education and information campaign created annually in March by the Academy of Nutrit ion and Dietetics. The campaign focuses attention on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits."Go Further with Food" is the theme for 2018, and its importance is t imely for many reasons. Whether it 's starting the day off right with a healthy breakfast or fueling before an active day, the foods you choose can make a real dif ference. Preparing your foods to go further, by planning meals and snacks in advance can also help to reduce food loss and waste. This year's theme for National Nutrit ion Month® encourages us to achieve the numerous benefits healthy eating habits offer, but it also urges us to f ind ways to cut back on food waste. Learning how to manage food resources at home will help you"Go Further with Food",while saving both nutrients and money. A few tips when it comes to buying food for your apartment include:1. Consider the foods you have on hand before buying more at the store. 2. Buy only the amount that can be eaten or frozen within a few days and plan ways to use leftovers later in the week.3. Be mindful of portion sizes. Eat and drink the amount that?s right for you. 4 . Find activit ies that you enjoy and be physically active most days of the week.

Making a Difference

Mike Burcke has been on our Maintenance team for 2 years now and he feels that the residents and staff are an excellent group of people to work with, making everyday enjoyable! Mike is married and has two grown children and has lived all over the world thanks to his service in the US Air Force. He says, "I approach this job by asking myself, ' If I lived here how would I want it to look and how would I like the maintenance team to support me?'" That's what makes him great at his job! Mike not only works hard for us but also uses his free time to help friends and neighbors with their "work orders" as well! Word gets around when there's a Maintenance man in the neighborhood! Mike, we are glad you're here and very much appreciate all that you do for us!
