gold dust video analysis

This is the opening shot to the song Gold Dust by DJ Fresh. The use of the slightly low angle shot, creates a scale of the area. Whilst this shot stays for about 3 to 4 seconds the editing and sound is unique. The music video opens to the sound of children singing who introduce the song. The editing after this shot jump cuts to another shot of the buildings. The extreme close up of this person who is about to start dancing is very powerful as he is staring right into the camera, this is called direct mode of address. The camera is at eye line height with the person we see and everything around his face and his surroundings are blurred so this emphasises how powerful this shot is. The sound here is when the child has just stopped singing and the song starts.

The editing is slow motion of this guy while the music is at of a faster pace.

Again another close up of a little girl who looks innocent and sterile. So far there has been no evidence of Sven Carlson’s theories of the Modern Mythical Embodiment. However some of Michael Shores theories are in this video such as surface without substance, the video looks good although it has no greater meaning. The editing here is fairy basic its just the camera panning around and then cut jump to something else.

The action shot of the girl skipping is particularly powerful; the whole video is focused around this idea of skipping and people coming together. The camera here is fixed on the skipping and is not moving at this point of time.

This is a very similar shot to the previous one of people skipping and having fun. The music here is at a very fast beat which in contrast with the visual. The video has a very joyful and happy vibe which aids the viewer to get into the mood, and grove of the video. If a certain artist can achieve a mood in the video which influences the viewer than that is seen as successful.

Again this is another close up, all the close up of the children are happy and enjoying life. I think close ups are the most powerful shot types as mood can be translated from performer in the video to the viewer. Something unusual to consider is that DJ Fresh the artist is white yet in his whole music video everyone in the video is black. Maybe the music video gives an insight into what life is like in a black community, aside from all the social and economic problems they may face, but skipping brings the community together and everyone is happy.

The music in this shot than does another drop and goes to the chorus, but changes slightly from previous beats. These two girls are the main performers as they are the as you say pro skippers. The camera is looking slightly down as they dance past, the shot lasts for about 4 seconds while they leave the frame.

Here is a medium shot of the two girls skipping, doing some pretty insane skipping tricks. The editing here is very quick lots of jump cuts and fast pace editing which suits the chorus because it is very fast pace. What is very clever is the skipping rope gets faster as it builds up to the chorus which is a cool effect.

This is very unique, most music videos are an example of Televised Bard which means the performers tell a story and the music video finishes as if it was a story. But this music video diverts from the common conventions. This provides the viewer the information where the video can be downloaded and where you can watch it. I think this is clever piece of information to put at the end because it perhaps gives the colours and pattern of the album or single cover so the viewer of the music video knows what to look for if they want to buy it.
