This month I am wearing my Ride Coordinator hat. June recap: After the June gathering 12 chapter members attended the south East Section picnic. It was a rainy day going and coming back, but the rain held off during the picnic. After the picnic many attendees went for ice cream at a local shop. Gary Ballou led a ride attended by 10 chapter members and one guest to the Skyline Parkway and various interesting sites along the way. Buckeye Rally was a success for many chapter members. Over the rally weekend 21 chapter members partook of various vendors, seminars, games and good food. Please see the photos at the end of the newsletter. At the closing ceremony it was announced that Buckeye Rally 2017 will be at the Richland County Fairgrounds in Mansfield on 15 – 18 July 2017 What is ahead in July; Our chapter gathering is on July 2nd with a ride to the Old Dutchman Restaurant in Logan. On the 9th we have added a lunch rid to G & R Tavern in Waldo for the famous Baloney sandwiches that they offer and the wonderful pies that they have for desert. Following lunch we will ride to Mystical Moments in Time, in Mount Vernon. This is the vendor that does much of the sewing for chapter members. You have probably visited her booth at one of the rallies. On July 10th is GWRRA at the Columbus Clippers. On the 16th we will meet at Frisch’s at 8:00 am to ride to Marysville Honda to register for the Pediatric Brain Tumor Ride for Kids. The chapter has had a “donation can” available at gatherings for funds that will be donated. Even if you are not participating in the organized ride, please come along to support the activity. On the 16th we have a dinner ride to Clay’s in Hebron. We will meet there at 6:30 pm for dinner or ice cream. The 21st is our mid-month get together at the Obetz Community center. This is not a staff only meeting, all are welcome to attend. The 23rd we will meet at Frisch’s on South Hamilton road at 9:00 am for a ride to Young’s dairy for a meal and ice cream led by Ben Bayes. On the 28 – 30 is the Region D rally in Coldwater, Michigan. On Friday at the rally there will be a “Family Feud” style game pitting the Ohio Chapter of the year, us, against the Michigan Chapter of the Year. Please come and support our effort. If you have not registered, there is a form near the end of the newsletter. See Gary’s Rider Ed Article for a link to the Region D Rally Schedule. Tom Eden Chapter Director

Hobo Junction has come and gone just like the boxcars of old. The weather on Thursday was scattered rain storms, but by Friday it was blue skies and lots of sun. Dinner that night was “Hobo Stew” which was very good and all seemed to enjoy the meal. The 21 members of B-3 had a great time especially on Saturday when we were responsible for operating the “Jail and Bail”. Just ask your fellow members about spending time in the “hoosegow”, myself included. All told I think our shift resulted in collecting $145 for the benefit of the District of Ohio GWRRA. There were vendors who offered various goods, safety chrome and even things for the co-riders. The Bees decorated their camp site for the judges, both day time and night time judging. Not sure what the results were, but we all had fun putting things together for the judging. There were several self-guided rides to various sites, museums and events provided by the host chapter and many attendees participated. It was also announced that next year, June 15-18, 2017, the Buckeye Rally/Convention will be in Mansfield at the Richland County Fairgrounds. I hope all members will plan on attending next year to join in the fun provided by your District staff. See photo Collage on next page. THE VIEW FROM BEHIND In most articles you read about motorcycles the focus is on the rider. Rider safety, rider tips, new rider equipment, and a wide range of other subjects related directly to the rider are covered in endless detail. That's all well and good, but what about the other person on the bike? You don't hear much about co-riders, do you? Well, we're there on the bike too. What does a co-rider see? If we look directly ahead, we get a magnificent view of the rider's helmet. That's intriguing for about a second, and the unchanging scene gets old. We can lean a little to the left or right and see ahead over the rider's shoulder, which helps, but you can only hold that position for so long before your back starts complaining. Instead, we spend a lot of time looking off to the sides of the road. For us, that's where the GOLD is in the term of GOLDWING. Off to the sides, we see wonderful views the rider doesn't have time to really enjoy, being busy driving. We can see incredible views from hills and valleys; we can see deer and other animals that are gone in a flash. We can see amazing sunsets, fog that blankets valleys below the roads, and the canopy of stars at night. We can take time to marvel at distant rainbows that riders see in one second glimpses. The view isn't so bad from back here!!! What else does a co-rider do beside see? Yes, we sometimes nap (not me) or read a road map, but we also watch for cars that don't seem to think one lane is enough and wants part of ours. We see other drivers start to cut us off or make a right turn through a stop sign or red light in front of us because we don't register on them as being there. We see slow trucks pulling onto the highway and see abrupt turns our driver might be missing. We are more than just a road companion; we are a second pair of eyes that might save both our lives. We read the maps, we find gas and food, we take pictures as we go and help with the little chores every bike demands. We are CO-RIDERS, and that's what we do, so the next time you read yet another article about the rider, take into account those who have THE VIEW FROM BEHIND........ A thank you goes out to Chapter NC-1 for a great article some years back.......... PLEASE REMEMBER THE FOLLOWING: Bob DeLong: going thru chemo and to Evelyn for taking such great care of him..... Alice Bontrager: Who had surgery this past week..... Gladys Carter: Having health problems..... Ed Richards: Having health problems....... Robert Vogel: Just got a message today where he was being rushed into the hospital.....He has had health problems.......

PLEASE KEEP THE ABOVE IN THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS

MOTORIST AWARENESS DIVISION

SPREADING THE WORD

This past weekend was the Ohio Buckeye Rally in Canfield, Ohio. There was no rain, lots and lots of sunshine, warm to hot temperatures and many, many smiles and laughs. It was a fun packed Hobo-themed weekend with seminars, games on and off bike, great Hobo stew, great costumes and B3 was well represented.

Gary also presented for the first time at an Ohio rally, the new Motorist Awareness presentation entitled Distracted Driving. This presentation was tested at the last Wing Ding and was enthusiastically received. This presentation includes updated information and encourages greater audience participation instead of a lecture method. Not that I am bragging, but Gary did it very well.

During our trip to and from Canfield, I noticed the digital road signs that promoted motorcycle awareness. Some signs even updated drivers about the number of road fatalities to date. I was pleased to see both of these reminders to drivers in Ohio.

On a different topic, Gary and I are, hopefully, on our way to Region D in July as we continue the selection process to Region Couple of the Year. We still have to update our speech and practice our turns but are looking forward to the event. Please come to the Region D rally and cheer us on. Remember to tell friends, family and co-workers to watch for motorcycles as they travel throughout their day. Karen Ballou Motorist Awareness

RIDER EDUCATION Gary Ballou

Rider Ed for July 2016.. and a few other things. Well, we are finally in (what should be) the peak of our riding season. I am happy to report that 11 brave souls went on the Chapter trip to Virginia in June and we had 5 days with no rain and that all returned home safe & sound. It reminded me why I am so happy to be a member of this wonderful family. While we all have different preferences … whether we are talking about riding styles, dining choices, or whatever, we still abide by a core set of GWRRA values and a common commitment to riding safely. I have to believe that the time we’ve invested in Team Riding seminars was time well spent, as I could see the principles we’ve talked about, being put into daily practice. In the GWRRA Levels program we stress the importance of Safety by Education and Preparedness. This month I share a few tongue-in-cheek examples of what can happen when we don’t take “preparedness” seriously … The Rain Clause: The chance of rain depends on how accessible your rain gear is, and goes up dramatically if you leave it at home. If you’ve just ridden through a thunderstorm and the sun has come out, it will usually begin to rain again 5 minutes after you have finally dried out & the rain suits are re-packed into the bike. *Maybe* it didn’t rain on the VA trip, because I always had our raingear bungeed to the luggage rack, on the upper trunk and in plain view? Just thinking…. The Tire Clause: You will never have a puncture on the road until you leave the tire repair kit at home in the garage. The Key Clause: You will discover that the bike key is in your inside pants pocket, immediately after you have finished putting on all your gear. Even more likely if you’ve also donned rain pants & jacket in the process. (Continued on next page)

http://gwrraohb3.com

July 2016 Page 10

The Witnesses-All-Carrying-Cameras Clause: The more riders around, the more likely it is that you will

(a) Drop your bike; motorcycles rarely fall over without an audience. (b) Drop your helmet onto a rough concrete surface. Especially if it is new or

expensive. (b) Forget the kill switch is off while trying to start your bike. (c) Ride along for miles with the turn signal on. (d) Get stung by a bee & do a roadside dance while shedding your riding gear.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Changing the subject … Karen & I are hoping that many of you can attend the Region D Rally July 28-30 in Coldwater MI. We would appreciate your support as we vie for Region D Couple of the Year. The selection will be made & announced during Opening Ceremonies, from 3-5pm, on Friday July 29. In case you need a reminder, please leave the rotten tomatoes at home ;-) As Ohio Chapter of the Year, OH-B3 has also been asked to participate in a “Family-Feud” style competition against Michigan Chapter of the Year MI-G. You have time to bone up on your GWRRA trivia until then. The game will be Friday night from 8-10pm.
