Published by the Marketing/ PR Committee United States Power Squadrons® Contact Greg Scotten [email protected] LIVE WITH YOUR KILL SWITCH One of my favorite parts about writing this column is the feedback I get from readers. It fulfills my mission of educating on boating safety as I know my message is being read and digested. In addition, sometimes readers point out errors or omissions that help keep me on the straight and narrow. I recently received a letter that made some points about a piece I wrote on “man overboard”. In one point the reader reminded me that I had overlooked kill switches. Strangely enough, when I was reading my own article over breakfast, I said to my wife “darn, I forgot to include them in this article”. So Mr. Reader, you were right and here goes. Many boats under 35 feet have a kill switch. It is a spring loaded pin that must be pulled to the outward position in order to complete a circuit

and keep your engine running. It is held in the outward position by a small clip that pushes under it. The clip is attached to a lanyard (boat speak for a short line) that attaches to the Captains person. It is usually a flexible line coiled like a spring to allow you some reasonable movement. If the Captain falls from his seat due to physical problems or being ejected overboard, the clip pulls out, the pin closes and the engine immediately shuts down. If your boat is not equipped with a kill switch, there are other versions available commercially for retrofit. Some are radio activated and allow the Captain to wander a certain distance away before shutting the engine down; others are water activated and shut the boat down if the Captain goes overboard. A kill switch is a very important piece of safety equipment in the prevention of fatalities from man overboard. So, be certain you have one on your vessel and that you use it. All too often I see the lanyard and clip attached to the instrument panel, while the other end hangs down unattached to anything. This renders your kill switch totally useless. The second worse thing to falling overboard is to be in the drink and to watch your boat disappear into the horizon. So, to be safe, be certain your boat has a kill switch device and that you use it faithfully. As the members of the United States Power Squadrons® remind us, “Boating is fun… We’ll show you how!” Take one of their informative courses or seminars in your area.
