  • Good morning! My name is Rose Wilson. I work for George’s, Incorporated at

their Further Processing facility in Springdale, Arkansas.

George’s incubates eggs and grows chicks into chickens.

Thank you to your teacher, Brittany Cohen, for inviting me to speak with you

    today.

I have a Bachelor of Science Degree in Organizational Management and an

Associate of Applied Science Degree in Environmental Management and

Government Compliance. My job deals with process safety management of highly

hazardous chemicals. I enjoy my job because I help George’s meet the

    requirements of government regulations.

  • What is needed to incubate eggs? Incubator, thermometer, hygrometer, eggs, and

    marker.

Plug in the incubator and make sure

the temperature is steady. A forced

air incubator (with a fan) temperature

should be 99-99.5°F. A still air

    incubator temperature should be 101-

102°F at the top of the eggs.

    A hygrometer measures humidity.

The humidity should be 45-50% for

days 1-18. And, 65% humidity for the

    last few days.

    Use clean, even shaped, undamaged

eggs. Shipped eggs should rest for 24

hours prior to setting. Place the fat

    end of the egg up.

Use a non-toxic marker to mark the

eggs with an X on one side and O on

the other, so when you turn the eggs,

you can make sure that they all got

    turned.

  • How do eggs grow into chicks?

After the hen lays an egg, a small air bubble forms in the large end under the shell. A

membrane separates the mass of the egg and air bubble which moves back and forth to

relieve stress and pressure on the embryo resulting from changes in temperature.

Correct humidity is important to allow the correct amount of air during growth and

hatching. Turn the eggs an uneven number of times a day, so the eggs do not spend two

nights in a row in the same position. Turning the egg mimics what a mother hen would

    do naturally.

How long does it take for eggs to hatch? 21 days or 3 weeks. One day is counted as a

    full 24 hours.

  • How do you care for chicks?

After the chick hatches, allow it to dry off and fluff up in the incubator. Newly hatched

chicks can survive for up to 3 days on the yolk they absorb during the hatching process.

  • How do chicks grow and change into chickens?

Move the chicks into their brooder.

Place wood shavings in the bottom.

Have chick starter feed and water

available at all times. Place marbles in

the water dish so the chicks will drink in

the spaces between the marbles. Litter

should be changed out every couple of

days. Cleanliness is VERY important at

    this stage.

Use a 100-watt bulb lamp or an actual heat lamp. Temperature

should be 90-95°F the first week in the warmest part of the

brooder. Then, reduce temperature 5°F each week until the

chicks have their feathers at 5-8 weeks old.

When chicks are a month old, add a low roost about 4” off

the floor to encourage the chicks to start roosting. Do not

place it directly under the heat lamp.

  • What are some different breeds of chickens?

    Leghorn

    Rhode Island Red

    Ameraucana

    Cuckoo Maran

    Delaware

  • What is the difference in brown and white eggs?

What is it like on a chicken farm? Living and working on a chicken farm is a career.

You do have to be on call every day and night.

  • Are chickens good pets?

Caring for pet chickens is pretty easy!

They have the same needs as most any

    other pet.

What to Do on a Daily Basis Keep feed and clean water full.

Make an appointment with your vet if

they do not look active, bright and

    healthy.

Collect and refrigerate eggs, pointy side

    down for maximum freshness.

If you've opened the coop door to let

your chickens out, always be sure to

    close and secure it at

    dusk (once they've all

    returned!) to make

    sure predators can't

    get in.

    Keep in mind that

    you CAN leave your

    chickens alone for a

    few days provided

    they have enough

    food, water and space

    for the duration of

    your trip.

    Rooster spurs hurt

  • Foods Chickens Should not Eat:

    Citrus fruits and peels

    Bones

Any large serving of meat, or meat that

    has gone bad

    Garlic and onion

    Avocado skins and pits

    Raw potato skins

    Long cut grass

    Chocolate

Morning Glories and Daffodils are poisonous to chickens.
