Our own insecurity, our own certainty about how things should be, sometimes even our own anxiety and fear block the path to meaningful conversation and relationship with those from other generations. These are our issues; we need to work through them in a healthy way. Until then we hinder the work of God through us. Why Does Studying Generations Matter? — Part Three

If you’re still with me in this conversation, then I’d like to spend a bit of time reflecting on what happens inside of us when the question of generations is brought to the table.

Think for a moment about your own experience. What happened when someone drew attention to another grouping of people, whether older or younger than your own generation? Were you put off or draw in? Was the idea threatening or intriguing?

It’s fairly common to encounter resistance in ourselves when a new idea or situation is encountered. Some of that resistance is likely because of our unfamiliarity with whatever is being presented. Some of that resistance may be because of our own insecurity. There are other reasons for resistance, too.

When we think of things in terms of generations and shift the conversation to think of things in that way, are you experiencing resistance in yourself, what you feel and think? Have you observed resistance in others? What’s at the root of your own resistance? What’s at the root of the resistance that others are experiencing? Are the causes the same or different?

I’m thinking that when we begin the conversation about generations, and resistance presents itself, we usually start with the other generation of people or the identified cause of the resistance at a distance. We start with words such as, “Well, they...” describing how the others are different or haven’t met some standard we hold for them unexamined.

As the conversation progresses, as we ask ourselves good questions and pull back the layers of our resistance, we begin to discover that resistance is often more about us than the others, about our issues than the other person. Our own insecurity, our own certainty about how things should be, sometimes even our own anxiety and fear block the path to meaningful conversation and relationship with those from other generations.

These are our issues; we need to work through them in a healthy way. Until then we hinder the work of God through us. When his graceful insight prevails, God will use us in his ways to bring about his kingdom. We pray that God’s Spirit would accomplish this good work in us quickly.

What is Oktoberfest? Oktoberfest is the world’s largest folk festival held annually in Munich, Germany. It

began in 1810 when Bavaria’s Crown Prince Ludwig married Theresa of Saxony. The

townsfolk held a party in a large field outside the city to celebrate and it was so

popular they held it again a year later. The same field has hosted the festival ever

since and came to be named “Theresienwiese” or “Theresa’s Meadow” in English.

The rest, as they say, is history. It is, without a doubt, the largest festival in the world.

It regularly draws over six million people through its sixteen-day run.

Although called Oktoberfest and originally beginning on October 12th

, the festival

date was changed to September in 1872 to take advantage of better weather. To

determine when the festival begins in any year find the first Sunday in October and

count back fifteen days to the starting Saturday.

For many people, the only reason for the festival is beer, but drinking is not the only

thing to do at Oktoberfest. The Oktoberfest grounds are over 100 acres and host a

dazzling array of “Bier” tents, food stands, carnival rides, games and more. Many

families enjoy taking the children to Oktoberfest and, in fact, Tuesdays at the festival

are family days with reduced food, beer, and ride prices.

That is the background for the festival we at Saint John Hattiesburg celebrate. However,

our emphasis is not on beer but rather on mission work and spreading the love of

Jesus throughout our community and the world beyond. Our festival is held on the

first Saturday in October, which this year is October 5th

. It is a lot of work and

requires all hands on deck. If you have not been contacted about working for

Oktoberfest, please speak to Mark Keyl, call the church office, or sign up on the lists

when they appear. We always need help preparing the food, baking for the

delicatessen, donating items for the silent auction, setting up, and cleaning up.

There is a spot for your talent!

The History of Our OKTOBERFEST

Our Saint John Oktoberfest began as a congregational potluck 41 years ago. Friends were invited and after a couple of years it was opened to the public. We now serve nearly 1400 plates of German potato salad, sauerkraut, and brats or wieners. Homemade German and traditional mustard, breads, and desserts will be sold in our delicatessen. In order to make this event a success, we need lots of donations and help from our congregation and friends. The proceeds from this event are used to fulfill our mission goal as a congregation. We support many local and some overseas organizations. Mark the week of September 29

th on your calendar as there are preparation

activities every day! Please get involved and find out what great friends you have here at Saint John.

OKTOBERFEST Is for Everyone 41st Annual Oktoberfest

Saturday, October 5th, 11am to 4pm

Oktoberfest at Saint John Hattiesburg is brings together some of the most important values of the congregation. It’s inclusive of the whole congregation; we believe everyone can enjoy the camaraderie of shared preparation tasks, working shoulder to shoulder on Oktoberfest day, and including newcomers to the congregation and friends in the community.

Oktoberfest is hospitality toward the community; we believe that the best celebrations are those that heartily welcome friends and strangers. We want to throw open the Biergarten gates and sit a spell with good food and brew, to catch up on where the time has gone, and to tell a few tall tales. Laughter shared is friendship doubled!

Oktoberfest is mission; we believe that we’re on this earth and a part of this neighbor-hood, this community, and this city for greater purposes than the mere enjoyment of life. We give back by pouring into the lives of others around us, by extending God’s blessing to those in need, by sharing tasks and making room for new people, by providing financially for worthy efforts in our region and around the world.

At Saint John Hattiesburg, Oktoberfest is for everyone! Let’s come together, find a place to help, and raise a toast to friends old and new!

OKTOBERFEST at Saint John Hattiesburg

The USM Connection

The story about how the Oktoberfest started at Saint John as a congregational potluck is quite well known. A conversation with former pastor of Saint John, Rudy Schaser, took the story back a bit further.

The very first year Dr. Roger Johnson, Professor of German at USM, asked if he could bring his German Club students over to a German-roots place to celebrate Oktoberfest. The elders at Saint John gave quick, easy approval.

About 20-30 students, plus interested Saint John folks, showed up at the old fellowship hall. Dr. Johnson and Saint John members brought German foods for the occasion. German songs were sung and speaking German was practiced. Everyone had a wonderful time and they agreed it was something to be continued. The next year, a congregational potluck Oktoberfest was celebrated.

Since then, Oktoberfest at Saint John has grown to an annual first-Saturday-in-October event. Over 1200 plates of brats, kraut, and German potato salad are served to the Pine Belt Community. Profits from Oktoberfest support approximately ten charities in the Hattiesburg area and around the world.

Have you decided where you will serve this year? There is a place for everyone. If you are not certain where you are needed, speak with Mark Keyl (601-466-0200) or Warner Boortz (601-310-1844).

From the Altar Guild

The Altar Guild Meeting will be on Saturday, September 21

st @ 10:00am in the Sanctuary

All Altar Guild members please try to attend so we can get our 2020 schedule in place. New members are always welcome. There’s always room at the table, as they say. Let me know if you will not be able to attend.

A Study in Joy

It is reported the word Joy appears 88 times in the Old Testament and 57 times in the New Testament.

Joy is everywhere present, even during the darkest moments in life. Even so, happiness never forces its way in to our hearts. We must be willing to choose joy and welcome it so that we may experience its gifts.

Joy is actually our natural state. Jesus tells us that no one will take our joy from us (John 16:22).

There are so many special and amazing manifestations of God. When we look around, we can find reasons to be joyful, as there are numerous wonders to behold. Those that have eyes let them see. Jesus put his joy in us that our joy may be complete (John 15:11). Can you feel it?

The joy of the Lord is our strength; therefore we are God’s joy. We take this joy with us into every experience of life (Nehemiah 8:10).

With joy comes hope. It is said that laugher is the best medicine. It literally transforms our thoughts from limitation into wholeness, that is, at one with God. Joy brings with it a feeling of contentment and confidence, which can take us through a storm in our life-journey. Happiness is not present when we are in the midst of a storm; it just vanishes.

Laughter, be it a giggle or a full bust out laugh, uplifts the spirit. Even if for a moment, laughter can lift our minds and hearts from a challenge we may be in the midst of and offer a temporary reprieve. Observe these moments when they happen and note the more we laugh, the better we feel. These are happy moments. Unlike happiness, which may come and go depending on circumstances and moods, our inner joy constantly shines forth from within our hearts.

Joy vs Happiness

There is much interesting information written about the differences between Joy and Happiness. Basically, Happiness is external and comes through earthly and/or material experiences; whereas, Joy is an internal, spiritual experience through our connection to God. For further reading on this, please take time to do some research. If you’re reading this digitally, here is a link for a quick list of differences: Joy vs Happiness

Lutheran Women’s Missionary League

LWML Mites collected on Sunday, August 4th, 2019, totaled $70.04. Praise God!!! Thank you for your prayers and support of the Mission Grants of the National and Gulf States District. LWML Mites will be collected next on Sunday, September 1st.

Twenty nine members and friends of LWML attended the annual summer luncheon at Cotton Blues, Saturday, July 27th. It was a great time of good food and fellowship among the members and friends here at Saint John. Many women mentioned we NEED to do this more often! Yes, it was a great time of good food and fellowship! I would like to personally invite all women here at Saint John, especially new members, to come and join in these activities by sharing your ideas, and gifts of talent in this place. You are needed!

I can’t believe how fast the summer has gone! Now it is time to start preparing for the 41

st annual Oktoberfest, Saturday, October 5

th. Some of the ways LWML members

serve on this big day is preparing food and snacks for the volunteer work days, baking items for the deli, decorating & setting up, etc. What a wonderful way of serving the Lord and witnessing to the Love of Jesus for the world! All proceeds received from Oktoberfest provide much needed funds for selected missions – both local and national. If you are new to Saint John, I encourage you to come and share the fun, love, and fellowship in this place!

On Sunday, September 1, 2019, (Labor Day weekend), the LWML will resume its regular business meetings following the worship services. On the agenda: preparing meals for Oktoberfest work days and making plans for Magnolia Zone Fall Rally at Saint Matthews in Gulfport. All women are welcome and invited!

They go in the offering plate during worship, and help the counters and financial secretary with accurate record keeping. Please complete the card inside the envelope to help us know whom to thank and how to track your donation. Thank you very much!

Prayer Meeting — Would a dedicated time of prayer with other Christians benefit you? We're looking to re-establish a group that would meet somewhat regularly for prayer. We could meet at the church campus or in a home. We'd keep the gathering to an hour or less, and we can talk about the frequency of meeting. If you're interested, please speak with Gil Emmons and we'll go from there (text: 601. 818.7583 or email: [email protected]).

A View from the Chair: Update By Dennis Smith, BOD Chair

Hi Folks!

If you would like, you can call this a late summer update. The kids are back in school, a lot of the vacations are complete, but it still is extremely hot out there, not just in Mississippi, but it seems all over the country. I would like to bring you up to date on some of the things going on around our beloved Saint John.

The construction on our remodel has started and is moving along quickly. Our goal all along has been to complete the renovation prior to Oktoberfest, either completely or at least substantially enough not to interfere with the large crowd expected on Saturday, October 5th. The contractor for our project ( Southeastern), is fully aware of the importance of that weekend and has committed to do everything possible to see that we are as presentable to our visitors and our-selves as we can be. Please include in your prayers their workers and vendors that are supplying the materials and sweat to get this done, and in a timely, professional manner.

We have had 18 pledge responses as of August 15th in ongoing gifts for the balance of 2019 and in 2020, totaling $24,384.00. We have had a tremendous response to the “Make it Happen” Immediate gift portion of our campaign of $16,481.00. The willingness to give back our blessings in this financial way is truly heartwarming and significant. More than the money really I am heartened by the enthusiasm and expectations expressed toward this project by those I have talked with. One day very soon, I look forward to you being able to sing with me “Thank God From Whom All Blessings Flow”.

We have planned a second “Big Bucket Brigade” commitment and celebration for Sunday September 1st. Wouldn’t it be great to announce shortly after that another 18 pledges for ongoing gifts over the next 18 months, and another great response in the “Make It Hap-pen” Immediate Gifts bucket. For those of you still praying and deciding how to support, we understand and thank you in advance. Unlike some telethons I have listened to and watched, we are grateful for your passion, enthusiasm, as well as your financial support. We have always been taught that our love is more completely expressed through our hearts than anything else.

Lastly for this month, I would ask you to introduce yourselves to our new folks if you haven’t already. Even though it is summer, we have been blessed by many new faces over the last several weeks. That is a fantastic thing for us. Don’t make these new folks wonder who you are. Say hello, share a moment, and Love. Like. Jesus.

Sunday Morning Bible and Spiritual Studies

Bible Study #1 — Philip Yancey's book What's So Amazing About Grace? — “If grace is God’s love for the undeserving, Yancey askes, then what does it look like in action? And if Christians are its sole dispensers, then how are we doing at lavishing grace on a world that knows far more cruelty and unforgiveness than it does of mercy?” This is a compelling read of a book that’s becoming a classic. We hope you will join in the meetings at 9:15 in the Community Room. For more information contact Nancy Kaul at 601-307-5127.

The Avenues Bible Study meets the 2nd

& 4th

Thursday of the month at 10:30am. The group will be studying Philip Yancey’s What’s So Amazing about Grace? “If grace is God’s love for the undeserving, Yancey askes, then what does it look like in action? And if Christians are its sole dispensers, then how are we doing at lavishing grace on a world that knows far more cruelty and unforgiveness than it does of mercy?” This is a compelling read of a book that’s becoming a classic. For more information contact Nancy Kaul at 601-307-5127 or Pat Davenport at 769-223-2889. Next study: September 12
