St. Monica was married by arrangement to a pagan official in North Africa, who was much older than she, and although generous, was also violent tempered. His mother Lived with them and was equally difficult, which proved a constant challenge to St. Monica. She had three children; Augustine, Navigius, and Perpetua. Through her patience and prayers, she was able to convert her husband and his mother to the Catholic faith in 370. He died a year later. Perpetua and Navigius entered the religious Life. St. Augustine was much more difficult, as she had to pray for him for 17 years, begging the prayers of priests who, for a while, tried to avoid her because of her persistence at this seemingly hopeless endeavor. One priest did console her by saying, "it is not possible that the son of so many tears should perish." This thought, coupled with a vision that she had received strengthened her. St. Augustine was baptized by St. Ambrose in 387. St. Monica died later that same year, on the way back to Africa from Rome in the Italian town of Ostia.
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
The ministry of permanent deacons has become an essential part of our parish life today, yet for centuries until 1967, this deeply traditional ministry had virtually disappeared. Every priest had first to be ordained a deacon, but the notion that one could actually embrace a permanent vocation to the diaconate was lost. The primary ministry of the deacon is to the welfare of the community, especially its poor, and his role in sacraments and preaching flows from that. His principal role is to animate and promote the ministry of all the faithful. Ninety percent of permanent deacons are married, although the discipline of celibacy for clerics means that if a deacon is widowed, normally he cannot remarry, nor can an unmarried deacon marry once ordained. The deacon does not preside at Mass nor may he absolve sins. Nor, since anointing of the sick is linked theologically to penance, may he anoint. Sometimes we are slow to engage with a tradition: Trent approved permanent deacons in the 1560s, but nothing was done until the 1960s. The vitality of the long-delayed restoration has greatly enriched the Church, particularly in the United States, where the majority of the deacons in the world serve. —Rev. Pope Francis’ August Intentions
Universal: Volunteers That volunteers may give themselves generously to the
service of the needy. Evangelization: Outreach to the marginalized That setting aside our very selves we may learn to be neighbors to those who find themselves on the margins of human life and society.
Prayers for Priests O Jesus, our great High Priest, hear my
humble prayers on behalf of your priests. Give them a deep faith, a bright and firm hope and a burning love which
will ever increase in the course of their priestly life.
In their loneliness, comfort them. In their sorrows, strengthen them. In their frustrations, point out to them that it is
through suffering that the soul is purified, and show them that they are
needed by the Church; they are needed by souls; they are needed for
the work of redemption. We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen

Taken Out of Context
If you want to start an argument, try telling your wife that St. Paul’s letter to the Ephesians says she should agree with everything you say. I’m
sure that many people have taken out of context the line about wives being submissive to their husbands. In fact, the first sentence says they both should be subordinate to one another. (Eph 5:21)
So what does Christ show us guys about being subordinate to our wives? Paul mentions the main example: Christ handing himself over for her (the Church) refers to his death on the cross. He made it even clearer for them the night before he died: He washed the feet of his disciples and told them to do the same for each other. (Jn 13:14-15)
Still not sure that subordination is a mutual quality in marriage? Paul explains that marriage is the best example of “love your neighbor as yourself.” He quotes Genesis 2:24 about two people becoming one body. So your love for yourself now becomes love for your spouse. Do I love my wife so much that what she needs is as important to me as what I need? Do we encourage and support each other in our chores and weaknesses? Do we support each other’s faith? Ladies, ask yourselves the same questions.
Paul’s conclusion is that marriage is a sign of what the church should be. If you ever want to know what the love of Christ for his Church is, look at how a couple in a strong marriage love each other. And if you want to have a good marriage, love each other as Christ loves you.
