The Songwriters Hall of Fame (SHOF)ceremony doesn’t get the wealth ofattention that The Rock & Roll Hall ofFame does, but being honored seems tobe valued by entertainers every bit asmuch – and perhaps more: Van

Morrison, who was in town to perform atForest Hills Stadium, was honored with theSHOF’s highest honor, The Johnny MercerAward. The same Morrison had refused toattend The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ceremonies when he was inducted in 1993.

Cyndi Lauper was part of this year’sSongwriters Hall class. Many of her biggesthits, including “Girls Just Want To HaveFun,” “All Through The Night,” and “TrueColors” were written by others, although”She Bop” and “Time After Time” were her

own compositions. She has further burnished her songwriting bona fides by composing the music for the hit Broadway show Kinky Boots. Lauper joked that many of her parents’ friends inOzone Park were still asking her what she was doing for a living long after she

made it big on the charts. To befair to them, at 62 she looks vir-tually unchanged from thecover photo on her 1983 albumShe’s So Unusual. She still hasthat Betty Boop voice judgingby the way she sang “Hat FullOf Stars” on the stage of TheMarriott Marquis GrandBallroom on this night. CarlyRae Jepsen of “Call Me Maybe”fame made the induction speechfor Lauper, delivering a fine rendition of “Time After Time.”

An advantage The

Songwriters Hall Of Fame has over its Rock& Roll cousin is that it honors all genres.Chicago blues songwriter Willie Dixon wasposthumously honored; Bon Jovi guitaristRichie Sambora performed a medley ofDixon classics in “I Just Want To Make LoveTo You” and “Hoochie Coochie Man.” Thebiggest surprise was Stephen Colbertsinging a shockingly credible version of TobyKeith’s “As Good As I Once Was,” and also delivered a tribute speech to Keith, thecountry music star who was in attendancefor the affair.

Jennifer Nettles, Sugarland’s lead vocalist, delivered the best performance ofthe night as she powerfully sang “He

Stopped LovingHer Today,” the1982 George Jonescomeback recordwritten by one ofthe evening’s honorees, BobbyBraddock. TonyBennett praised hisrecent stage partnerLady Gaga in hisspeech that namedher the SHOF’s“ContemporaryIcon” songwriter. The two workedtogether on a smashstandards albumlast year.

Comic Joel McHale did a terrific hosting job hosting the recent ESPY Awards. As the emceewas rushing from backstage to the podium inthe opening bit, he passed Seattle SeahawksQB Russell Wilson, prompting McHale toscream: “Don’t throw!” While it was clearlyscripted, it was easy to get the feeling that thatMcHale, who grew up in Seattle, was stillticked off about Wilson’s dumb play deep inNew England Patriots territory with timewinding down that cost the Seahawks the

Super Bowl. McHale also jokingly congratulated Victor Espinoza for becomingthe first jockey to win the Triple Crown, ridingAmerican Pharoah to immortality: “PresidentTrump’s first act will be to deport Victor toMexico.”

Alex Rodriguez, who at 40 apparently haslearned that he never really needed steroids, used the ESPYs to poke fun at himself. ActorKen Jeong acted as “A-Rod’s” spokesman ashe read a list of things for which Rodriguezwanted to apologize. Jeong apologized for“the Greek economy” and “the Californiawater shortage,” but not a word was saidabout steroids. Rodriguez brilliantly playedstraight man as he remained as silent as amime.

New York Mets general manager SandyAlderson found himself in the unusual position of being a buyer for his team at theJuly 3l trade deadline instead of being a seller. He must have been as disgusted asfans were about a pair of consecutive lossesin late July; the first was when the Metswere four outs away from an important 3-1win against the Nationals on the road.Unfortunately, reliever Bobby Parnell hadnothing, and wound up giving up three fastruns; the Mets went down meekly in the topof the ninth inning. The next day, the Metswere shut out at Citi Field by the LosAngeles Dodgers and Clayton Kershaw, 3-0.No shame in that – except that the Mets’

four and five hitters in the lineup, JohnMayberry Jr. and Eric Campbell, both were hitting well below .200, a major embarrassment. Needless to say, the battingaverages of both fell even further by the end ofthe night. Alderson, normally not a wheeler-dealer, quickly obtained a pair of veteransfrom the Atlanta Braves – infielders Juan Uribe

Making Strides Against Cancer: After watching her best friend, Luci Bonneau, lose herpainful struggle against breast cancer in 1999,Donna Conners made a pledge to honor Bonneau’smemory in a way that would have a lasting impact.Sixteen years and $650,000 later, Bonneau has not

been forgotten, and her memory has never beenmore appreciated thanks to Conner’s dedication todo something special. Most bowling fans refer to itas “The Luci,” and this year it took place from July31 through August 2 at Palace Lanes in Houston.

The event is now called the PBA/PWBA XtraFrame Striking Against Breast Cancer MixedDoubles; in its 16th year, the tournament thistime had its largest entry ever, including alarge contingent of Professional BowlersAssociation and Professional Women’sBowling Association stars headlining a sold-out field of 256 competitors.

“In 1999 when Luci died, we were talkingand decided, let’s run a bowling tournament,”Conners said. “In 2000, I decided I was goingto put together an event the way I wanted it tobe, with tough conditions because breast can-cer is a tough battle. It was a shot in the dark, and it worked, and it sold out.”

The inaugural event at 32-lane DynamicLanes sold out its Pro-Am tournament for twonights. Conners said the first event raised$7,000 for the weekend. “We thought we had

really raised some money,” she said. “So we kept atit, involving vendors I work with at our pro shopand we reached the outside world when (StormProducts co-owner) Barb Chrisman got involved. From that day forward, Storm has sponsored usevery year and we just keep growing.”

Over the years, the tournament has raisedapproximately $650,000 to combat breast cancer.explained. Two years ago, St. Joseph’s Hospital wassold, and the new ownership shut down TheStehlin Foundation, “so we started our ownStriking Against Breast Cancer charity,” Connorssaid. “The money we’ve raised is being donated to

The Rose, a Houston-based organization that helpswomen who can’t afford breast care treatment ormammograms, and the Huntsman Group, a cancerresearch based in Utah.” Among the competitorsentered this year as teams were ShannonPluhowsky and Tommy Jones; defending champsMissy Parkin and Scott Norton; the husband-and-wife teams of Chris and Lynda Barnes and Tinaand Stu Williams; native Colombians ClaraGuerrero and Andres Gomez; and two-time formerwinners Shannon O’Keefe (with Bill O’Neill) andCarolyn Dorin-Ballard (with Mike Fagan).

and Kelly Johnson – for two low-level minorleaguers, and also called up top prospect outfielder Michael Conforto (probably soonerthan the GM would have liked). It’s surprisingthat the Braves were basically throwing in thetowel for 2015 by sending the Mets a pair of.275 hitters – Hall of Fame numbers by NewYork standards these days.

Although it can be argued that closer JeurysFamilia has been the Mets’ MVP as he has converted most of his save opportunities, heshowed signs of wear and tear as the campaign hit August. Alderson wisely decidedto obtain insurance by acquiring formerNationals setup man Tyler Clippard from the Oakland A’s.

The cherry on the sundae for Mets fanswas the trade for slugging outfielder YoenisCespedes during the final hour of the pre-

waiver trade deadline on July 30. In storybookfashion, the Mets swept the WashingtonNationals in a three-game series, and at presstime looked like serious contenders for the firsttime in what feels like eons.

The first sign of the 2015 NFL season ishere: Teams have opened training camps. Forthe first time in many years, both the NewYork Jets’ and New York Giants’ camps areeasily accessible to the public, as both areusing their respective New Jersey bases inFlorham Park and East Rutherford. Check theteams’ websites to find practices that are opento the public free of charge. Many fans misswatching the Jets train at Hofstra University, but “Gang Green” will return for their annualvisit on Saturday, August 23. I spokewith Jets general manager MikeMaccagnan at the Boomer & CartonCelebrity Softball Game at YankeeStadium, who said that he is amenableto moving part of the Jets training campback to Long Island. Since the Jets haveboth a new GM (himself) and a newhead coach (Todd Bowles), it madesense for them at this time to hold summer training at the team’s year-round base of operations.

It will be interesting to see if theNew York Islanders will be able toretain their loyal Nassau and SuffolkCounty fan bases as the team relocates

to Barclays Center in western Long Island (alsoknown as Brooklyn). Although it did not muchpublicity, the reality of the Islanders’ moveoccurred July 8, as the team held its annualBlue & White Scrimmage for rookies awayfrom the Nassau Coliseum for the first time.

Nice touch by MSNBC to pay tribute toWendell Scott, the first African-American todrive in the NASCAR circuit, on a recentepisode of “Shift.” Scott integrated NASCARin 1953, six years after Jackie Robinson brokebaseball’s color barrier.

The U.S. Open qualifying rounds are under-way at The Billie Jean King National TennisCenter in Flushing. Admission is free, and youmight catch some big names in action.

mer time" and a "family affair" would be anunderstatement, as The Family Stone willheadline this year's 10-year anniversary

Hippiefesttour thatwill alsofeature RickDerringer,Mitch Ryder& TheDetroitWheels, andBadfingerFeaturingJoeyMolland.

The Family Stone – featur-ing original founding mem-bers Jerry Martini, CynthiaRobinson, and Greg Errico –will perform the music of Sly& The Family Stone, includingsuch classics as "I Wanna TakeYou Higher," "EverydayPeople," "Hot Fun In TheSummertime," "Thank You(Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin),""Family Affair," "Everybody IsA Star," "Stand!," and "DanceTo The Music." The grouprecently welcomed PhunneStone, daughter of Sly Stone andCynthia Robinson, as their newfemale vocalist leading them into

their 50th Anniversary in 2016. The band ini-tially hit the scene in 1966 and was the firstmajor American rock band to have an inte-grated, multi-gender lineup. In 1993, Sly &The Family Stone were inducted into TheRock and Roll Hall of Fame.

It's doubtful that anyone will be sittingdown when Rick Derringer breaks into hiswell-known rock anthem "Rock and Roll,Hoochie Koo." Forty-plus years after itsrelease, the song continues to be a staple onclassic rock radio, and was featured in several movies including The Spirit of '76,Rush, Stag, What A Girl Wants, and the cultclassic Dazed and Confused. Fun fact: Yearsbefore his success as a solo artist, Derringerhad a band (at the age of 17), The McCoys, that landed a #1 hit in 1965, "Hang OnSloopy." The songwould eventually beknocked out of thetop spot by TheBeatles' "Yesterday."Derringer has performed witheveryone from Alice

Cooper and ToddRundgren to RichieHavens, Edgar Winter(and his band WhiteTrash), Johnny Winter, and even “Weird” AlYankovic, among many others.

The hits began forMitch Ryder & TheDetroit Wheels at thetail end of 1965, withthe release of theirfirst hit single, "JennyTake a Ride!" In 1966,they recorded andbegan to perform amedley featuring

Little Richard's "Jenny Jenny" and ChuckWillis' classic R&B song, "C.C. Rider." Thesong would quickly enter the Top 10, settingthe stage for what was to come: More hitswith "Little Latin Lupe Lu" and the classicmedly, "Devil With A Blue Dress On/GoodGolly Miss Molly." Later, they topped thecharts with "Sock It To Me-Baby!"

"Come And Get It," "No Matter What,""Day After Day," and "Baby Blue," are theclassics by Badfinger Featuring Joey Molland. A veteran of Hippiefest tours,Molland returns once again. At the end of1969, Joey auditioned for a band called TheIveys that would soon be renamed Badfinger. As they say, the rest is history. From 1970 to1972, the band would experience four consecutive worldwide hits. Molland was also a member of Natural Gas during the 1970s, and has been a successful solo artist in his own right.

Fantastic 4Starring Michael B. Jordan, Kate Mara,Miles Teller, Jamie Bell, Toby KebbellDirected by Josh Trank, Joshua Trank20th Century Fox

Before this new Marvel-based wannabeblockbuster even reached theaters, fans andcomic book nerds were complaining, bitching, moaning, and griping. Here's a compendiumof comments, edited and softened more than abit for your protection:

They're all too young! This version of theFantastic Four looks like a bunch of teenagers at a costume party!

Where's Jessica Alba in her skin-tight rubberoutfit?

What's the idea of casting Michael B. Jordan asJohnny Storm? He's an African-American –Johnny Storm is a white guy! What gives? (Note:It was in the news that many trolling comicsfans' comments were much, much worse thanthis; those “fans” should be ashamed of themselves.)

Where's Jessica Alba? There have already been two Fantastic Four

movies already; I'm used to those characterizationsand the feel of those films. Why do we need another“re-imagining”? We've already had re-dos of bothSpider-Man and The Hulk. Why do we need tostart at the beginning again ... again?

Where's Jessica Alba?

What's this gimmick I've been hearing aboutfour four different openings for Fantastic Four inmajor cities? What's that got to do with anything?

Where's Jessica Alba? No, seriously – Reed Richards, better known as

Mister Fantastic – couldn't possibly be that young. He's oneof the most brilliant charactersin comics; Toby Kebbel looks likehe should be studying for hissenior year SATs. Reed has graytemples – gray temples! Andwhen he stretches, well, theymight as well write “CGI” onhis arms!

Where's Jessica Alba?We don't like the new version

of The Thing! The old MichaelChiklis version looked more likethe Thing from the comic books. This Thing is way too big, toougly, too menacing. The originalThing could at least smile – thisone looks like he's going to crackapart any minute now!

Where's Jessica Alba?We are overdosing on Marvel!

Already this year, we've had theAvengers sequel, and Ant-Manin still in the mallplex. We needtwo of these at the same time?

Where's Jessica Alba? How come the uniforms

are so different? We like the old ones!Where's Jessica Alba? Our take: Yup to everything but the ridiclu-

ous gripes about Jordan. And one more point:Where's Jessica Alba?

Season RoundupFun Home

Circle in the SquareAn American In Paris

Palace TheatreThe King And I

Vivian Beaumont Theatre at Lincoln Center

The Tonys, Drama Desk, Outer Critics, and New YorkCritics Circle Awards have all been bestowed after a jam-packed season. The first post-Tony casualties included“Airline Highway,” “The Visit,” and “Gigi.” Based on the1956 morality play by Friedrich Dürrenmatt, “The Visit,”the final collaboration of John Kander and the late FredEbb (“Chicago,” “Cabaret”), was a dark musical aboutgreed and murderous revenge. John Doyle’s stylized pro-duction capitalized on the star wattage of razzle dazzleBroadway legend Chita Rivera ,who at 82 gave a mes-merizing, powerfully moving, and committed perform-ance that could not camouflage a depressing story.

“Gigi,” on the other hand – all handsome Belle Époqueperiod costumes, Parisian settings and a lilting familiarLerner and Loewe score – attempted to woo young fansby starring “High School Musical” pop star VanessaHudgens (surrounded by wonderful Broadway pros) inher Broadway debut, but her spunky high spirits did notlure enough theatergoers to keep the musical running.Unfortunately, the exquisite production was underminedby the producers’ timid approach to Collette’s tale of a15-year-old-girl being groomed to be a courtesan, and by“Call the Midwife’s” Heidi Thomas disastrous politicallycorrect rewriting of Lerner’s book and reassignment ofsongs (“Thank Heaven for Little Girls” was suddenlydeemed “pervy”).

The big winners with five Tonys each were theunder-dog upset “Fun Home,” (besting the more conventionalfavorite “An American in Paris”) and “The Curious

Incident Of The Dog In The Nighttime.” Based on AlisonBechdel’s acclaimed 2006 autobiographical graphic memoir, “Fun Home” netted awards as best musical, bestdirector, and best score and best book for composerJeanne Tesori and writer Lisa Kron – a Tony first forwomen to win in these categories for one musical. Both acoming-of-age and a coming-out tale, the moving musicalexamines Alison’s relationship with her conflicted andultimately suicidal closeted gay father (played with

anguished intensity by Tony-winner Michael Cerveris). The three women who play Alison as well Judy Kuhnwho plays her long-suffering mother were all deservedlynominated for Tonys.

“An American in Paris,” the expected winner, is a

charmer. Based on an MGM film classic directed byVincente Minnelli with a script by Alan Jay Lerner (like“Gigi”), the Gene Kelly vehicle marks the dazzling stagedebut of triple-threat charmer Robert Fairchild, a princi-pal with the New York City Ballet who not only thrillswith his athletic and balletic dancing but proves equallyaccomplished as a singer and actor, burning up the stagewith his sizzling charisma and good looks. The buoyantromantic musical – featuring a songbook of terrific jazzyGershwin tunes (winning the best orchestration Tony) –also showcases the stunning Tony-winning dances (fromballet to tap) of Christopher Wheeldon, a renowned balletchoreographer making his directing debut. PlaywrightCraig Lucas has darkened the story – as post-War Parisreawakens from the depression of the Occupation withbreadlines and revenge – and given Fairchild’s rivals forthe affections of Lise (dancer Leanne Cope) backstories, making them gay and Jewish. Bob Crowley’s painterlysets netted a Tony as did Natasha Katz’s evocative light-ing. No wonder the musical sends audiences out with asmile on their faces and a tap to their steps.

Winner of the best musical revival, the 1951 belovedRodgers and Hammerstein classic “The King and I,” hasbeen given a sumptuous production by Lincoln CenterTheater. Under the sure hand of director Bartlett Sher, who breathed fresh life into Rodgers and Hammerstein’s“South Pacific” in 2008 starring Kelli O’Hara, this musicalabout the clash of cultures and the need for tolerance, fea-tures exquisite costumes (for which Catherine Zuber wona Tony), the rich sound of an enormous orchestra andaward-winning performances by six-time nominee KelliO’Hara and “Here Lies Love”s Ruthie Ann Miles, as theBritish widow who moves to Bangkok in the 1860s toteach the many wives and children of the proud andautocratic King of Siam (played until July 14 by Japanesestar Ken Watanabe) and the king’s Number 1 Wife, respectively. Though she’s a bit bland, O’Hara’s crys-talline voice soars with great warmth in such enduringclassics as “Getting to Know You” and “Shall We Dance.”

It’s the time of the year that we allwait patiently for. The time of the yearwhere we get one of the biggest EDMfestivals in the U.S. in our own back-yard. None other than Electric Zoo.For those of you who are unfamiliarwith the event, let me lift that rock upfor you and bring you a little bit intothe light. Every year, at the crossroads

between Queens, Manhattan, and theBronx on Randall’s Island, there is agathering of hundreds of thousands ofpeople who come together to listen toand experience a different world.Electric Zoo is a music festival thattakes place on its own island, giving it asecluded yet special feeling. Comparedto most other festivals, which are usual-ly set in a downtown, crowded environ-ment, Electric Zoo takes the music to aparallel universe.

This year, “EZoo” is ramping up togive its attendees an even better experi-ence. Bringing in the minds that werebehind TomorrowWorld, Mysteryland, and Sensation, the festival is looking togive itself a fresh new look and willraise the bar compared to previousElectric Zoo. Fans can expect biggerstages, brighter lights, and an excep-tional production. New art and interac-tive installations will play into the festi-val’s core zoo theme. The lineup for thisyear caters to a wide variety of festival-goers spanning tons of different genres.Artists for this year range from the likesof Above And Beyond, Adventure Club,3lau, Fightclvb, Gramatik, and KeysAnd Krates to The Chemical Brothers,Markus Schulz, Oliver Heldens,Excision, and Bro Safari. With this newlineup also comes a transformation inpricing schemes: No morewill you have to figure outif you can dish out $400 fora weekend festival. ElectricZoo has made major pricecuts for all types of tickets. For around $280 after taxes, you can experience thewhole weekend at ElectricZoo. If you’re not lookingto spend your entire laborday weekend on Randall’sIsland, they have more thanreasonable options for one-day and two-day passes.Learn all about it atElectricZooFestival.com.

Once you’re at the festi-

val, there are some things you need toremember to make your festival experi-ence a good one. It’s pretty much agiven that you’re going to be attendingthe festival with a group of friends (orat least one other person). Everyonehas different tastes in music and someof your friends may want to see Slanderwhile you want to see Kennedy Jones.Just let everyone do their thing andmake sure you set up a meeting timeand place so that you can reconnectafter both sets. Cell phone reception isnot so great when you have 100,000people all trying to connect to the same4 networks at the same time. On thatnote, set your phone to airplane modeunless you absolutely need it. That textmessage isn’t going through no matterwhere you hold your phone in the air.Don’t waste your battery, especiallywhen you’re going to need it to takepictures and videos of all those headlin-ing acts. And while you’re out theredancing and going crazy to Brillz orTJR, remember to take breaks and getwater. Most music festivals, includingEZoo, offer free water to their patronsand have medical tents all over theplace. Get some water at least afterevery act you see. It’ll make your festi-val experience a lot better, I can guaran-tee that. One last bit of advice that willsave you a lot of time getting into thefestival is exactly how you get there.Several different options exist such asdriving in, taking a bus, or walking.Believe it or not, the fasting approach

seems to be walking. There is tons oftraffic getting onto and through theisland and parking is both limited andexpensive. A similar situation existswith the buses. There are long lines andit’s crowded to get on. I recommendtaking the 4, 5, or 6 subway lines north(towards the Bronx) and getting off at125th Street. From there, it’s about a 25minute walk onto the Island. Althoughit seems like it might be long, whenyou’re with friends and hanging out,it’s really not that bad at all and lots ofother people do it as well. Hope to see you all at the festival andthat you all have a great time there. There are still plenty of tickets availableonline and it’s an event not to bemissed. If you wanna hit me up, feelfree to at [email protected] next time, keep raging my friends.

Creedence ClearwaterRevisitedClassic Rock Legends Return At The Parmount In Huntington

When was the last time youattended a concert in which youknew every song and spent about90 percent of the performance on

your feet dancing and grinning? Is such a thing even possible intoday’s day and age of disposablepop songs? Legendary artists toursporadically, and that iconicgroup continues to get smaller.Live music fans deserve theopportunity to see a non-stop feelgood show that is fun for multi-generations – and they findthis with Creedence ClearwaterRevisited.

The backbone of the group isStu Cook and Doug “Cosmo”Clifford, who are the Rock andRoll Hall of Fame rhythm section(bass and drums respectively)from the legendary groupCreedence Clearwater Revival(CCR). Cook and Clifford startedthe Revisited project in 1995 whena friend wanted to promote a fewconcerts. They didn’t realize atthe time what a gap their per-formances would fill in the livemusic circuit and that they wouldwind up playing close to 100shows a year in the United States,Canada and abroad.

“We never really had any inten-tion of playing for the public,”said Cook. “We got talked into it,but didn’t know how it would goover ... In the beginning Cosmoand I decided that if we couldfind the musicians that could cap-ture the sound and recreate whatthe music was about, we’d do it.”

Every song performed is aCreedence classic, and the

multi-generational family friendlyaudiences are treated to this nightafter night around the countryand now the world. The band’sappeal has spread internationallyas they have performed for thousands of fans in Australia,New Zealand, Argentina, Chile,Brazil, Europe and Asia.

Since the group’s inception inthe mid-90s, the reaction toCreedence Clearwater Revisited’s

concerts has been remarkable, driven in part by a generation ofkids who, as Cosmo says,“Weren’t even born when themusic came out.” Likewise, therelease of a double-live CD onUniversal’s Hip-O Records label, which features passionate, authoritative versions of 22 classic hits, was the result of public demand.

“It was generated by requestsof the people who came to the shows,” said Cook. “Over and over they would ask, ‘do you guys have a CD?’”Creedence Clearwater Revisited’sRecollection has proven so popular that in 2008 it was certified platinum by the RIAA.

The band’s 2014 lineupincludes lead guitarist KurtGriffey, who has recorded andtoured with members of TheEagles, Foreigner, The MoodyBlues, Wings, Lynyrd Skynryd,Santana, and Journey; lead singerand guitar player John Tristao(who rose to prominence as leadsinger for the band People whentheir hit “I Love You” bulletedinto the Top 10); and versatile Steve Gunner, who plays keyboards, acoustic guitar, percussion, and harmonica.

On Pages: Those longing for thelong-ago days of rock – we’ll see you atHippiefest this week – will no doubtfind nostalgia in the upcoming bookHippie Chick: A Tale Of Love,Devotion & Surrender. The new effortis a fine art hardcover coffee table bookby rock & roll photographer JayBlakesberg.; it hits stores on October 1via Rock Out Books and is available for

pre-sale now at rockoutbooks.com. Thebook provides a whopping 445 imagesof female rock fans at concerts curatedfrom Blakesberg’s lengthy career.“Hippie Chick celebrates the uniqueconnection between the vibrant community of free-spiritedwomen who are inspired by,and help inspire, live music.Blakesberg’s visual anthro-pology beautifully capturesthe feminine festival andconcert archetypes, and theindividuals who have gracedthe fields and performancehalls of America since 1980.Earth mamas and fairyprincesses, hula hoopers andwhirling dervishes, front rowregulars and flower crownmakers; the entire tribe ofdedicated, music-lovingwomen – their fashion andtheir passion – is sensuouslybrought to life throughBlakesberg’s artful lens,”said a press release, and it'shard to argue with that summation. None other thanGrace Slick of JeffersonAirplane provides the book’sforeword, offering a retro-spective of women in theoriginal hippie-era musicscene. Slick writes: “We chose to mani-fest our dreams rather than follow apre-set norm. We chose to fly ratherthan crawl. We chose to experimentrather than walk through someoneelse’s flat world.” More tasteful than itmight sound, this book is clearly agreat gift idea for both rockers and finephotography lovers.

Another new book is – and we'renot kidding – The Invention OfClothing, now available everywhere;the book tells the story of the clotheswe wear and how they came to be. Inthese pages is the origin of denim andwhy jeans became an American icon; aChinese Empress who unravels thesecret of a cocoon to discover silk; and

the creation of Velcro after a walk inthe mountains. The book by author ArtNeufeld details virtually every type ofgarment, telling the stories of, amongother things, bras, pants, zippers, bikinis, and Gore-Tex.

On Sound Stages: From “SaturdayNight Live” to Saturday night stays, itseems: InterContinental Hotels Group(IHG) has hired comedian Rob Riggle

as the Holiday InnExpress brand's“CreativeDirector” and“BreakfastExcellenceHoncho.” In thisnewly created“role,” Riggle willbe responsible fordelivering comedyand “drivingExpress Startbreakfast enthusi-asm for the brandthrough a varietyof unique pro-grams,” accordingto a press release.Former “SNL”

stars are the rage in advertising thesedays; Darrell Hammond has caught theattention of millions as Col. HarlandSanders on the truly strange new seriesof Kentucky Fried Chicken TV ads …Home shopping network Evine Live –

formerly ShopHQ, formerly ShopNBC– remains the same laughably bad TVexperience, even after its “makeover”by new CEO Mark Bozek about a yearago. It's the same products delivered bythe same people the same way; theonly changes seem to be a couple ofnew sets and some souped-up graphics. It's still tedious hours ofcheesy budget watches pretending tobe “collectible,” no-name cookware, and women's fashions so dowdy they'dmake Heidi Klum look like HermioneGingold. Already, “Evine Dead” jokesare all over social media, and it's easyto see why: Evine remains fourth in athree-network home shopping race, farbehind QVC and HSN.

Guy, whose blistering solos and soulfulvocals have made him a legend in blues andR&B music, recently released his newestalbum, Born To Play Guitar onSilvertone/RCA Records; the fact that thisstar still records for a major label is testamentto his immense popularity and stayingpower. Born To Play Guitar features guestappearances by Van Morrison, Joss Stone,Kim Wilson (The Fabulous Thunderbirds),and Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top). Morrison joinsGuy on “Flesh & Bone,” a song dedicated toB.B. King. On “Come Back Muddy,” Guyreminisces about the “good ole days” withhis friend, Muddy Waters. The album is produced by Grammy Award-winning producer and songwriter Tom Hambridge.

Guy is as charismatic as he is talented;recent interviews reveal that while this mightbe a veteran of the blues game, he still displays the passion of a hungry artist.

“Every time we would finish a session,”said Guy after the recording of a previousalbum, Rhythm & Blues, “if everybody feltgood about it, we’d say, ’Let’s do another.’You need about 14, 15 songs for an album, but we had passed 18 songs and I said, ‘Man,when is this going to be over?’ But they kept

throwing songs at me, and every damn thingwe cut sounded pretty good. I got the wordback that the label thought maybe it was agood idea to put two CDs out — one of themthe slow stuff, more for listening, and theother, like B.B. King said, if you want to boogie-woogie all night long.”

At age 78, Guy is a Rock & RollHall Of Fame inductee; a majorinfluence on rock titans JimiHendrix, Eric Clapton, and StevieRay Vaughan; a pioneer ofChicago’s fabled West Side sound;and a living link to that city’s halcyon days of electric blues. Hehas received six Grammy Awardsalong with a 2015 LifetimeAchievement Grammy Award, 34Blues Music Awards (the mostany artist has received), TheBillboard Magazine CenturyAward for distinguished artisticachievement, and The PresidentialNational Medal of Arts. RollingStone ranked him in the top 25 ofits "100 Greatest Guitarists of AllTime." Guy was also awarded the2012 Kennedy Center Honors forlifetime contribution to Americanculture; at a performance at theWhite House, Guy persuadedPresident Obama to join him on achorus of “Sweet Home Chicago.”

Also in 2012, Guy published amemoir, When I Left Home, andreleased Live at Legends, which

was nominated for Best New Recording inThe Living Blues Awards. Meanwhile, Guykeeps looking to the future of the bluesthrough his ongoing work with his youngprotégé, Quinn Sullivan. For a night of realblues, The Space will be the place.

Songs Of Summer: As is our fine tradition, we now examine the stateof pop music by looking at the TopTen singles at summer's midpoint –the beach/pool music, as it were.

Not surprisingly, the #1 spot isheld by Taylor Swift, who seems toown the real estate on both the singles and album charts. In her ownway, Swift has the same impact in

2015 that Elvis Presley and TheBeatles once did; her opinions actually affect things, including thestreaming industry. If she smilesupon an artist, she raises that artist'sstock value – such is the case withKendrick Lammar, who is featuredon "Bad Blood," an excellent trackthat instantly sticks. In all, it’s quiteamazing for a girl who started out onthe country charts to go to #1 with asong featuring a hip hop sensation.

At #2 (on the “American Top 40”countdown) is "Hey Mama" a collaboration of DavidGuetta (who made it hipfor DJs to show up on thecharts as artists), NickiMinaj (who seems to liveon the chart almost asmuch as Swift), and another EDM wiz,AfroJack. The tune isdance floor gold and hasbeen a radio mainstay formonths. It's followed by"Shut Up And Dance" byWalk The Moon, a freshfaced-band’s pop/bubblegum track bearing asemblance of a rock sensibility, a unique and rare thing inthis decade. The fourth biggest trackis "See You Again" by Wiz Khalifaand a new (to me, anyway) kidnamed Charlie Puth, from theFurious 7 soundtrack; it’s a memorialtune for Paul Walker, and the songhad been #1 seemingly forever until

it finally started moving down thechart.

The fifth biggest song of themoment is a tropical islands breeze ofa tune called "Cheerleader" by Omi.No, I never heard of him, either, butit's a perfect summer, boyfriend/girlfriend record, very simple and tothe point, like everything on the chartthese days, instantly catchy. That

same term would certainlydescribe "Worth It” by a glam girlgroup called Fifth Harmony, whohave been waiting for a hit for awhile – and it’s finally here, andthe groove alone is worth it, as isthe contribution of rapper Kid Ink.At #7 on the chart is my favorite of the moment, a monumental“turn up the radio” tune called"Can't Feel My Face" by TheWeeknd (yes, that's how hespells it). The summer chart is

party central, indeed.Checking in at #8 is Tove Lo,

the Nordic bad girl, with "TalkingBody," which is exactly about what you’d think it's about, andthe video on YouTube will bearthat out. If you're one of those

asking “What happened to MTV?”: Itall went to YouTube, where you seewhat you want instantly, unlike the80s when I had to sit through dreadful REO Speedwagon videoshoping for a glance of Adam Ant orToyah.

In this regard, lot of folks havespent a lot of time watching the #9tune, "Want To Want Me" by the greatJason Derulo, who sings and dancesbetter than anyone out there rightnow, and this hit is another of my“turn it up” faves while driving.

At #10, none other than the infamousJustin Bieber provides the vocals for"Where Are you Now" by Skrillexand Diplo, and it’s another tunethat’s a club and radio smash.

I like them all ... what can I tellya? That's our yearly mid-summerhits wrapup – turn it up!
