Fluid Power for Off-road Vehicles Vision

The Off-road fluid power vision…

Is strategically aligned with our nation’s need to save energy.

Explains the difference between on and off-road vehicle needs.

Offers a complete system package from energy source to end

use functions for off-road vehicles.

Allows use of existing manufacturing and distribution networks by

using liquid fuel as the energy carrier.

Leverages the on-going research work at the CCEFP and its

existing large industry base.

Opens many new opportunities as the power generation, storage

and power transmission systems are integrated.

Commercial Off-road Vehicle Efficiency R&D

Program

• Capitol Hill visitors

– CCEFP/NFPA: Kim Stelson, Mike Gust, Eric Lanke

– Industry: Bosch Rexroth, Caterpillar, Danfoss, Deltrol Fluid

Products, Eaton, Hydra-Power Systems, Parker, Moog

– ~30 minute presentations to key Senate and House staffers.

• Language in appropriation bill for water and energy.

“Appropriation of an additional $5 Million above the DOE’s budget

request for the Vehicles Systems portion of the Vehicle Technologies

Office account to issue a competitive solicitation in order to improve the

energy efficiency of fluid power systems for off-road vehicles.”

Connected vehicles

• In early 2014 DOT announced the intention to

require vehicle to vehicle communication device

and the final decision is expected to arrive soon.

• At this year’s transportation research board

(TRB) annual meeting (Jan. 2016 in DC),

connected vehicles become the dominant topic.

– Communication standard, traffic planning, vehicle

technology, powertrain system, energy and environment

etc.

• ARPA-E has issued a request for information

early this year on energy savings through

connected vehicles.

• A call for proposal is expected from ARPA-E on

this topic this year.

Accomplishment and Action ItemsAccomplishment since March 2016:

• Working with SMI to continuously monitoring the legislation process to

ensure the passing of the new off-road vehicle R&D program.

• Submitted a concept paper to the Arpa-e connected vehicles call for

proposal.

• Contacted Argonne National Lab to understand how CCEFP can fit in

the OPTIMA program.

Action Items:

• Helping DOE vehicle technology office (VTO) to define the scope of the

off-road vehicles R&D program

• Continue to explore the DOE OPTIMA program

• Explore opportunities for connectivity R&D for off-road vehicles and fluid

power.

Fluid power is the technology of choice for power generation,

transmission, storage and motion control.

Human Scale Fluid Power Vision

• Human scale fluid power systems categorized as

<10kW.

• Includes Industrial Automation, Human Assist &

Therapeutic Devices, Medical Devices/Robots,

Exoskeletons and Military Robots

• The fluid power industry would benefit greatly from

“white space” organic growth.

• Tremendous interest is forming on the horizon.

• There is still time for the fluid power industry to get

involved and shape the future.

• Government seed funding for pre-competitive

research is needed.

Fluid power is the technology of choice for power generation,

transmission, storage and motion control.

Fluid Power Manufacturing Vision

The CCEFP fluid power manufacturing strategy is not yet approved. Target approval date is

October 2016. However key elements that will undoubtedly be included are…

• Highlight the importance of fluid power and raise awareness to key government agencies

including NSF, DOD, DOE and NIST.

• Stress the importance of its manufacturing to our nation’s economy and security

• Promote the integration of fluid power technologies into systems and design tools such as

CAD/CAM

• Integrated target areas include Design, Manufacturing, Materials, and Control

• Manufacturing specific areas include additive manufacturing, digital manufacturing, big data,

precision systems and quality control / SPC

• The manufacturing roadmap efforts currently underway will be the cornerstone of our strategy

and future tactics
