Last year we had presentations regarding demand response pro-
grams available to end users. For our October event, we will ex-
plore the specific strategies that can be employed to reduce your
demand and save you money. Three speakers will look at ways to
control your lighting, HVAC and generation equipment to maxi-
mize the program revenue you can obtain.
Background. PJM Interconnection (http://www.pjm.com) is a
regional transmission organization (RTO) that coordinates the
movement of wholesale electricity in all or parts of 13 states and
the District of Columbia. Demand response (also known as load
response) is end-use customers reducing their use of electricity in
response to power grid needs, economic signals from a competitive
wholesale market or special retail rates. PJM‘s wholesale markets
provide opportunities for end-use customers to realize value for
reducing their demand for electricity. Demand response is an inte-
gral part of PJM‘s markets for energy, day-ahead scheduling re-
serve, capacity, synchronized reserve and regulation. In most build-
ings the three most common ways of reducing demand is through
controlling the lighting, HVAC and generation equipment. This
meeting will provide information on what strategies can be used to
effectively control this equipment for maximum revenue and least
occupant disruption. After the meeting, all are invited to attend
the Electric Expo, which is in the same facility at no charge.
Our Speakers:
Lance Hollner, Director of Sales for Encelium (http://
www.encelium.com ) will speak about lighting control strategies.
Between his current position with Encelium, and previous roles at
Lutron Electronics, he has over six years of experience in product
management, sales, and business development of energy manage-
ment and lighting control solutions in both US and international
markets. Lance holds a BS of Chemical Engineering from Georgia
Institute of Technology, and is also a LEED accredited profes-
sional.

GPAEE Newsletter
I hope you had a great summer and are ready to take on, once again, the challenges
of the energy industry. We are in exciting times with new Federal , State & utility
programs along with the need to keep businesses and organizations cost competi-
tive. We have more tools to work with than we‘ve ever had and GPAEE want you
to be prepared to take advantage of these. Our mission is to help you be more
effective in what you do through, ―Fostering action through education, innovation
and networking to promote the priorities of Philadelphia-area energy professionals‖.
This Association year we‘ve put together programs that we carefully considered over
the summer. We asked your opinion and we thank those brave few who responded.
By the time you read this we will have already had our first meeting with our good
friend Tom Tuffy, Center for Energy, Enterprise and the Environment at
PennFuture, giving us a rundown on the state of the energy economy, topped off
with a good old Phillies game.
If you are not into baseball, consider our October meeting, to be held at the Valley
Forge Convention Center. Last year we presented information on the PJM demand
response offerings. This year we want to talk about the specific technologies and
strategies that you can use to take advantage of the PJM programs. And afterward,
you can casually walk to the exhibit areas of the concurrent Electric Expo 2009 (no
charge to enter Expo).
In November, our interests turn to what is happening in New Jersey. We don‘t
want to forget our New Jersey members, and so we will talk about that State‘
renewable and energy programs and some success stories. For those doing or
thinking of doing business in New Jersey, we encourage you to attend. We end 2009
with our annual Holiday Party to be held again at Paddy Whack‘s on South Street.
We hope you can take part in the festivities as well as connecting with old and new
acquaintances.
2010 has even more to offer and we will be talking about those programs in our
upcoming issues of the Newsletter. I want to thank you all for supporting GPAEE.
Your continued support will only make our chapter stronger and more relevant. We
encourage you to give us feedback and get involved in our events.

Jim Clark, of Energy Connect and Clark Energy ([email protected]), will
focus on strategies to control your HVAC equipment. Jim Clark is the President of
Clark Energy, Inc. He was recently the Director of Engineering at EnergyConnect,
Inc., a leading Curtailment Service Provider in Demand Response markets. In both
of these roles, Jim has been responsible for identifying and implementing Demand
Response Strategies to reduce customer demand for Economic, ILR, and Synchro-
nous Reserve programs at various ISOs (regional electric grids). Customers have
included universities, industrial, healthcare, and commercial properties.
Del A. Hilber of Constellation Energy (New Energy Group) will talk about other
strategies, especially as it relates to automated systems for initiating demand reduc-
tions and generating equipment. Mr. Hilber is Vice President of Load Response for
Constellation Energy. (NYSE: CEG) and manages Constellation Energy‘s Load Re-
sponse products and initiatives marketed to Commercial and Industrial customers
throughout the United States. He is responsible for the daily load response busi-
ness, overseeing the product development, program management, services, and IT
infrastructure. Mr. Hilber currently is the executive sponsor and program manager
for an innovative, large scale Demand Side Management automation project. Prior
to his current role Mr. Hilber, was Director of IT at Constellation where he lead the
IT project and operations teams supporting the demand response business, this in-
cluded the development of a state of art energy bidding platform for the business.

CRS Report Finds Cost of Waxman-Markey Depends on New Technology
The ultimate cost of the Waxman-Markey cap-and-trade bill, if enacted, would be deter-
mined by the response of the economy to technological challenges, including developing
low-carbon sources of electricity generation, the Congressional Research Service said in
a new report . (more)
FERC Acts to Expand Demand Response with Measurement Standards
The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) laid the groundwork for expanding
the use of demand response in organized wholesale markets when it proposed standards
for measuring and verifying the performance of demand response services.
FERC is proposing to incorporate, by reference, business practice standards adopted by
the North American Energy Standards Board for an array of demand response services
in organized wholesale markets administered by regional transmission organizations and
independent system operators. The standards – for energy services, capacity services,
regulation services and reserve services – categorize these services, and require system
operators to publish details of how they will measure and verify their performance.

Hospital Expecting 25% Fuel Savings With Direct-Contact Heat Recovery
With construction of a new hospital in Hopewell Township, N.J., under way, Capital
Health is planning to move its Regional Perinatal Center (RPC) from its Mercer Campus
in Trenton, N.J., which will close when the new hospital opens in 2012, to its Fuld
Campus, also in Trenton. Hospital officials are gearing up for the new RPC with
extensive renovations. The officials also are focusing on Fuld's current and long-term
energy requirements. (more)
State to Announce Funding for CO2 Capture Project
Pennsylvania Environmental Protection Secretary John Hanger on Tuesday, Sept. 22 will
announce funding for a demonstration project designed to capture a minimum of 95
percent of the carbon dioxide (CO2) from a waste coal-fired test plant near Pittsburgh.
The technology will enable world economies to address the climate crisis while meeting
energy needs necessary for economic growth and reduce the United States' dependence
on foreign oil. (more)

For 18 years the National Engineers Week Future City™ Competition has been chal-lenging seventh and eighth graders nationwide to create the cities of tomorrow while encouraging their interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math through hands-on applications. The 2009-2010 Future City competition continues this tradition by challenging students to address the real world issue of affordable and green housing.
Designing affordable housing for those most in need is enormously complicated. But doing it while adhering to LEED recognized green building standards, with an emphasis on energy efficiency and a low carbon footprint…now that‘s a challenge.
There are two great ways you can help meet that challenge:
1. Help get your son or daughter‘s school signed up to participate in the event. Registration deadline for schools nationwide is October 31, 2009.
2. Future City is also looking for engineers who may be interested in serving as mentors.

II. Award Background Information: Who is Eligible? AEE Awards are presented to energy professionals who have achieved regional prominence in their fields. Candidates for awards may be nominated by themselves, another individual who is also a GPAEE member in good standing, or by an officer of the Association of En-ergy Engineers.
Behind the GPAEE Awards Through its Awards Program, GPAEE recognizes achievers in the fields that we serve. Win-ners are formally saluted at a special awards presentation, which takes place during the 2009 GPAEE Holiday Party. At this special awards presentation, the GPAEE Award winners re-ceive distinctive plaques commemorating their achievements. In addition, the GPAEE Award winners are recognized in future GPAEE Newsletters.
General Criteria Each GPAEE Award addresses a unique category. Therefore, each nomination ballot submit-tal should describe the nominee's proficiency in that specific category. The nomination of an individual should include a description of the nominee's work in the field, e.g. innovative pro-jects, substantiated savings, etc. [Note: Future plans and goals are not considered]. The nomi-nation of a project should include a description of the type of project, equipment installed, operating results, financial data, or special features.
Deadline for Nominations Nomination ballots must be received by November 14, 2009. There will be no extensions to the deadline and no exceptions will be made.
How Nominations are Processed Nomination ballots are first screened in order to verify eligibility. Each ballot is then indi-vidually evaluated according to official judging criteria.
