The mission of the National Engineers Week Future City Competition is to provide a fun and exciting

educational engineering program for middle school students that combines a stimulating engineering

challenge with a "hands-on" application to present their vision of a city of the future. More than 300

students representing 40 or more schools from Philadelphia and the surrounding region participate. Visit

our site to learn more http://www.futurecityphilly.org/

The Future City Competition, a school based program for middle school students, is held from September

through February every year. The National Future City Competition is sponsored in part by the National

Engineers Week Foundation, a consortium of professional and technical societies and major U.S. corpora-

tions. Major funding comes from Bentley Systems, Incorporated, Ford Motor Company and Shell.

The National Engineers Week Foundation, a formal coalition of more than 100 professional societies,

major corporations and government agencies, is dedicated to ensuring a diverse and well -educated future

engineering workforce by increasing understanding of and interest in engineering and technology careers

among young students and by promoting pre-college literacy in math and science. Engineers Week also

raises public understanding and appreciation of engineers' contributions to society. Founded in 1951, it is

among the oldest of America's professional outreach efforts.

The competition is made possible through the efforts of a large number of dedicated volunteers. If you

want a rewarding experience and would like to help, please use our on-line sign up Volunteer Opportuni-

ties

Three schools are still in need of mentors: Easton Area, North Philadelphia and Kutztown. If you know

of anyone who may be interested in mentoring these schools, please contact Jennifer Wetzel at volun-

Chapter Awards

Every year, GPAEE presents Awards to energy professionals who have achieved prominence in their field. We rely fully on you, our members and affili-ates, to nominate those you feel deserve the recognition and award. Nominations are being accepted now and winners will be recognized at the January 2013 meeting.

Through our Awards Program, we are able to recognize the important work being done in energy by individuals, organizations, and corporations. By identifying those who exemplify the very best in their fields, energy professionals are honored and the industry is advanced.

Please take the short amount of time that is needed and submit your nomination.

The deadline for ballots has been extended to January 4.

Click here to go to our new, on-line, application.

DEP Natural Gas Vehicle Grant Program

The Department of Environmental Protection announced today it will begin accepting applications Dec. 1 for its Natural Gas Vehicle Grant program, which will provide up to $20 million over the next three years to help pay for the incremental purchase and conversion costs of heavy-duty natural gas fleet vehicles.

In the first year, $10 million in grants will be available, $5 million of which is slated for local transporta-tion organizations, including non-profit agencies providing public transportation services and public transportation, port and redevelopment authorities. Non-profit organizations, for-profit companies, local transportation organizations, state-owned or state-related universities, commonwealth or munici-pal authorities and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission will be eligible to apply for the remaining amount.

An additional $7.5 million in funding will be available the second year, with $2.5 million the third year. Eligible vehicles must weigh 14,000 pounds or more and be fueled with compressed natural gas or liq-uefied natural gas. Bi-fuel vehicles are also eligible.

Grant awards will be capped at 50 percent of the incremental purchase or retrofit cost per vehicle, with a maximum total of $25,000 per vehicle. The incremental purchase cost is defined as the difference be-tween a vehicle eligible for these grants and one powered by traditional fuels, such as diesel or gasoline. For this first year, grant applications are due Feb. 1, 2013. Grants will be awarded in late March 2013.

To learn more about the program and complete the online grant application, visit www.dep.state.pa.us and click on the Natural Gas Vehicle Grant Program button.

Win One of Three $25,000 Prizes

in the Shale Gas Innovation Contest!

STATE COLLEGE, PA – Are you a researcher, entrepreneur, or innovator working in the shale gas space in Pennsylvania? The Ben Franklin Shale Gas Innovation and Commercialization Center www.sgicc.org an-nounced today the program will award a total of $75,000 in cash prizes for the three best shale gas-oriented innovations, new product ideas, or service concepts that are either in the development stage or recently launched.

In addition to the cash prizes, successful applicants will gain exposure to investors, potential partners, and in-dustry sponsors. This year, the Shale Gas Innovation Contest is co-sponsored by Ben Franklin Technology Partners (http://www.benfranklin.org), ANGA(www.anga.us), Acorn Energy (http://acornenergy.com), Cab-ot Oil & Gas Corporation (www.cabotog.com), CONSOL Energy (www.consolenergy.com), Chesapeake En-ergy (www.chk.com), First National Bank (www.fnb-online.com ), Little Pine Resources (http://littlepineresources.com), the Marcellus Shale Coalition (http://marcelluscoalition.org) , and Praxair (www.praxair.com) .

Bill Hall, Director of the SGICC remarked, “What’s great about this competition is that a simple online sum-mary is all that’s required to get started. Any idea related to the shale gas space is eligible - even if the product or service has already been commercially developed. Examples include vehicle conversion, natural gas utili-zation products/services, remote site monitoring, natural gas or NGL conversion technologies, and water re-mediation for fracking operations”.

Finalists will be chosen by a panel of industry experts. To download an application, visit www.sgicc.org and click on the $75,000 2013 Shale Gas Innovation Contest tab. Deadline to enter is February 1, 2013.

For details regarding eligibility or other questions, contact Bill Hall at either 814-933-8203 or [email protected]

Southeastern Pennsylvania Communities Up To $2,500 in Incentives for Purchases of WGES PA WindPower

Washington Gas Energy Services (WGES) today announced the launch of the PA WindPower Campaign, www.pawindpowercampaign.com, a community-based marketing campaign that rewards Pennsylvania communities in the PECO territory when WGES PA WindPower is purchased. WGES PA WindPower is a new electricity product offered by WGES that is sourced exclusively from Pennsylvania wind. The PA WindPower Campaign will invite 25 pre-selected municipalities to compete for ten 1kW micro-wind turbines. Other municipalities will be offered up to $2,500 in financial incentives. Each municipality that ac-cepts the Campaign challenge and achieves defined program milestones will be recognized as a Pennsylvania WindPower Community. Participating commercial customers who purchase WGES PA WindPower will also have the opportunity to receive financial incentives or help their municipality earn rewards. (more)

Rising Heating Oil Prices Drive a Portion of 1M Pa. Users to Natural Gas

Rising home heating oil prices are driving homeowners who depend on the fuel to convert to natural gas or find ways to use less oil. Some are lowering thermostats or adding coal- or wood-burning stoves, said Norman Wildenmann, general manager at Bish Oil Co. in Greensburg. Those who purchase oil are buying in smaller quantities, instead of filling tanks for winter. “Rather than spending $1,000 or $1,200 at once, they’re getting a little at a time,” said Amy Adams, president of Adams Petroleum in Emsworth. The Northeast has the nation’s biggest concentration of heating oil consumers, mostly in rural areas. That includes about 1 million Pennsylvania homes.(more)

18 Pennsylvania Cleaners Receive Grants from State

Eighteen Pennsylvania cleaners were among 56 small businesses that received grants from the state to invest in energy efficiency or pollution prevention projects. Pennsylvania’s Small Business Advantage Grant program, funded through the Hazardous Sites Cleanup Act, helps businesses with 100 or fewer employees by providing 50 percent matching reimbursement grants of up to $9,500 to implement projects that will save 25 per-cent annually in pollution prevention or energy-related costs. Report: Smart Grid Investments Deemed Worthless

A new policy report focused on the electric grid and economy of energy, “Getting Smarter About the Smart Grid”, was published today by the National Institute for Science, Law & Public Policy (NISLAPP) in Washington, D.C. The report states that billions of dollars in federal subsidies for “smart” utility meters have been misspent on meter technology that will not lead to energy sustainability or contribute to the possibility of a more efficient and re-sponsive electricity grid.
