The holidays are meant to be a time filled with love and joy, but this year Americans have lost the so-called “holiday spirit” because of a simple red cup – Starbucks’ 2015 holiday cup, to be precise. Every year, Starbucks releases its annual holiday cup to usher in the holiday season. Past designs have incorporated symbols of the season including orna-ments, snowflakes, holly, snowmen, and/or words such as “joy” and “hope.” These designs reflected the spirit of winter and the hol-iday season without paying homage to any particular religion. This year’s cup is plain red with a simple ombre from bright red to cran-berry. According to Jeffrey Fields, the vice president of Starbucks, Starbucks removed all symbols and words this year because it “wanted to usher in the holidays with a purity of design that welcomes all of our stories.” The new design didn’t sit well with Joshua Feuer-stein, an evangelist and former pastor who calls himself a “social media

personality,” who took ex-ception to the red cups and posted a video to Facebook that went viral. Feuerstein criticized Starbucks for removing “Christmas from their cups because they hate Jesus.” Apparently, according to Feuerstein, removing the pictures of snowflakes and snowmen

from the holiday cups means that Starbucks hates Jesus! It is difficult to watch Feuerstein’s entire video without pausing to laugh at its absurdity, yet he still managed to stir the pot among the people, many of whom declared they had sipped their last Starbucks’ non-fat latte. Surprised by the social media outlash, Starbucks issued a statement explain-ing that it tries “to create

a culture of belonging, inclusion and diversity,” and that the cup was meant to be a “blank canvas for customers.” The response of the opponents to the cup? Starbucks is disregarding Christmas as a holiday by making the cups a blank canvas. Seriously? Is every-

one forgetting that this is just Starbucks’ annual hol-iday season cup? I repeat, holiday cup. It’s hard to imagine how anyone can be so offended by a plain red cup. There are no offensive words or symbols, no derogatory remarks, and no calls to action. Instead, this blank red cup, in its simplicity, acknowledges that differ-ent people celebrate this holiday season differently. Starbucks never intended

for its holiday cup to be a symbol for Christmas per se, which is why the symbols on past cups have always been rather generic reflections of the holiday season and not more reli-gious-based symbols. If the Starbucks’ annual holiday cup is a symbol of your faith, then perhaps you should consider if you, rather than the cup, is the one in need of some Christmas spirit. In fact, you may wish to ask your-self, “Why do I care if the cup I drink my morning caffeinated beverage from is plain red or covered in snowflakes and snowmen?” Couldn’t you resolve your angst by purchasing your very own to-go cup with the symbols of your choos-ing and pouring your Star-bucks beverage inside? I admire Starbucks for giving everyone a chance to write their own story, and I applaud its simple, yet spirited, red cup, which acknowledges the diversi-ty of our country. So for those of you choosing to boycott Starbucks simply because they did not put snowflakes and snowmen on their holiday cups, have at it. That just means a shorter line for me!

Many students at Centennial High School dedicate their time outside of school to raise aware-ness or help with different charities. Some of these students are members of different clubs and organi-zations at CHS, and some work with the charities. One such student is Stephanie Crispell, a senior at CHS and a member of the National Honor Soci-ety. She has been an NHS member for two years and is one of the people in charge of raising awareness for the different charities, as well as helping out with the different events. “We do a lot of different events during the holi-days,” said Crispell. “We actually just had a meeting where we got together and made cards and care pack-ages for St. Paul’s Place in Baltimore. The care pack-ages contain toiletries like

soap, deodorant, razors, toothpaste and toothbrush-es.” NHS members also help out Grassroots, a 24/7 crisis intervention center. Its main goal is to be a resource to individuals and families in need of assis-tance. “We wrap toys for

the children at Grassroots,” said Crispell. “We are able to wrap individual and personalized gifts for the kids there because we have NHS members that work there, and they know the kids personally. We want the kids to have a more individualized Christmas.” One of the biggest charities that the members of NHS work with is Toys for Tots, which gives toys and goods to less fortu-

nate children. Throughout the months of November and December, people are donating toys to Toys for Tots. “On Christmas Eve, we sort all of the toys into different piles,” said Crispell. Boys, girls, books, and stuffed animals are some of the different piles

the members make. “We put them in bags and those bags go to ele-mentary schools, where parents and kids line up like it’s a store to pick out some toys.” Although big-name charities are the ones that are heard about the most, NHS also helps out with smaller charities. “In the past, NHS has done a jingle bell run, where we have race marshals that give

water to the runners as they go,” said Crispell. “It’s usu-ally a pretty big turnout be-cause everyone gets to dress up in their Christmas attire. We also have Breakfast with Santa, which helps out dif-ferent locations during the holidays. We usually have around 10 to 15 members go to each event and make sure we help out.” Many people question whether it’s worth putting the time and effort into helping out the charities, and wonder what they would get out of it. “It’s really cool to see their eyes glow,” said Crispell, “and it’s awesome knowing that we’re improving lives by just being there for some-body. It’s absolutely reward-ing to do this, walking into an event and realizing that you’re changing people’s lives for the better.”

celebrate both? What will the rest of our family think?  Melissa Nussbaum, a Centennial Junior, shared her insight on how the holiday season is carried out in a family with one Christian and one Jewish parent.   Regarding the issue of which holiday the family would celebrate during this time of year, Nussbaum said that her parents decided to balance the scales. “My parents came to a mutual agreement to celebrate both holidays [Christmas and Hanukkah] to equally represent their faiths,” she explained. “There were no personal confusions because at a very young age my parents explained the situation we were in.”  “I get a double experience of religion,” Nussbaum continued. “Most kids worship or celebrate from only one perspective while I can see it from two.” When asked how the two religions affect her everyday life, she said that they don’t have as much of an impact as one would think. It does create some

differences in her life though. “When we have days off for the Jewish holiday, most kids get the day all to themselves, but I go to services and celebrate it.” Nussbaum pointed out that there can be both benefits and drawbacks of being in an interfaith family. “We get to learn the beliefs of two different religions. Also, there’s longer excitement because of Hanukkah happening, and then Christmas right after.” A problem that one could face in an interfaith family is the position of the parents while one holiday is being celebrated. “If the parent who isn’t Christian won’t come to open gifts on Christmas Day, if affects the child(ren) and it puts pressure on the parent who celebrates because they have to put the whole holiday together on their own.” There are many myths and common misconceptions about interfaith families that people believe, worldwide. Nussbaum touched on one when she explained, “Most people believe that we get

more gifts from celebrating both [holidays], but that’s not at all true. My parents split up the gifts for both holidays to be equal.” She also stated that her parents didn’t put pressure on her for future religious choices. “They told us we can celebrate whichever holiday that we want to when we’re older and we had the option of getting confirmed or having a batmizvah.”  The holiday season is a time for family to come together and traditions to be upheld. Not all interfaith families celebrate the holidays the same way, just like how families of one faith don’t all celebrate the same. Regardless of religious differences, most people view this time of year as one of community, friendship, and joy. Whether people celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza, or a combination of holidays, the winter season is sure to be filled with joy.

An interfaith view ofthe holiday season

In the Jewish community, intermarriage became increasingly prevalent in the 1970s. Before that, and even still, today, people of the Jewish faith could be disowned by their family for marrying someone outside of their faith. In traditional Judaism, children of intermarriages can only be considered Jewish if the mother is. The children are not recognized as Jewish if the father is, and the mother is not. According to the National Jewish Population Survey from 2000-2001, the percent of intermarried couples (where one party is Jewish) in the US was 47%. Before 1970, it was 13%. Each year, the percentage of interfaith marriages where one party is Jewish increases drastically. One very difficult and confusing element in the intermarriage community is the holiday season. This time of year brings up many questions: which holiday will we celebrate? Which holiday will our kids celebrate? Do we

Madhu Lalchases, rather than going to the store. Like brick and mortar stores, online stores and businesses make a large fraction of their overall yearly revenue during the holiday months. With al-most 64% of adults owning smartphones and a consis-tently growing population of individuals who use the internet, it becomes appar-ent that the demographic of the American consumer has changed drastically. The traditional buyer, the individual who goes to the store to buy his gifts, has been replaced by the tech savvy consumer. This new consumer longs to shop at their own leisure and holds an extreme distaste for the long lines and the hecticness that goes along with shopping at brick and mortar stores. Online stores have start-ed to take advantage of the popularization of internet transactions and have started to provide deals and specials during the holi-day season, like traditional brick and mortar stores do. Online outlets even have the ability to ship items, some which are only avail-able exclusively online,

within 24 hours of placing the order. The most notable of the online sales events is Cyber Monday, held the Monday after Thanksgiving. Statistics released by RJMETRICS say

that, the digital revenue ob-tained between Black Friday and Christmas are 50-100% more than e-commerce revenue acquired during other months. This year, it is estimated that cybersales will generate over 3 billion dollars in revenue. The growing populari-ty of online shopping has shifted the way businesses target and advertise their products and business. Stores originally without online shopping websites have been quick to create websites and be part of the lucrative business of online shopping.

As the holiday season steadily approaches, festive themed music inundates radio stations, and com-mercials advertizing holi-day deals fill every slot on television. It is apparent to any mall-goer that, during the holiday season, nearly every store seems to be filled with people browsing through endless amounts of merchandise. Annually, according to RJMETRICS, a website designed to help business-es analyze and interpret data, the holiday season accounts for about 20% of the retail industry’s annual sales. The spike in revenue during the holiday season is understandable, a big part of the holiday season

is buying gifts for those you love or care about. Consumers love to buy, but what they seem to like even more is the feeling of saving money despite spending it. Businesses un-derstand the influence sales and deals have on consum-er rates, which is why you seem to see the number of sales and price reductions increase during the holiday season. Dashing to obtain the best holiday sales and specials have now become deeply imbedded into the holiday tradition. However, as technolo-gy becomes more readily available and money trans-actions via the internet become customary, a lot of holiday shoppers are turn-ing to their smartphones and laptops to make pur-

Every December, many Howard County residents decorate their front yards, as well as their homes, with decorative lights, inflatable snowmen, and reindeer. While some families put up a single strand of lights and call it a day, Charles Dan-iels, Howard County’s own “Santa Claus,” has adorned his house, as well as his yard, with thousands of Christmas lights for nearly 20 years. With a heavy heart, Dan-iels, who is 77 years old, and his wife, Andrea Al-mand, realized they could no longer put up the dis-play. Not only were many of the trees used to support the decorations dying, but Daniels himself was getting too old to set it up. “He spent four months a year, 12 hours a day, putting up or taking down lights by himself. I ... grew worried about his climb-ing up and down ladders and trees when I was not

home,” said Almand. Over the past 19 years, Daniels worked tirelessly to bring holiday cheer to the Beaverbrook neighbor-hood where he resides with his wife. Over time, word spread of Daniels’ magnif-icent yard display, and a family car ride past Daniels’ home became a Howard County holiday tradition for many. Daniels began this tra-dition with childlike en-thusiasm. “When I retired, I said, ‘Hey, you know, I’m going to start decorating my house,’” and that’s ex-actly what he did. His first yard displays were much smaller. “I started with just the bushes, the front of the house, the windows, the door, and a couple Christ-mas trees I put out in the lawn, and then the display just grew from there,” said Daniels. “Over the years, I bought more and more decorations and put up more and more lights, and it became a very large display.” Shopping for lights

became an annual af-ter-Christmas tradition of its own. “The retail people drop the price in half for Christmas lights and that sort of thing... following the Christmas holiday,” said Daniels. “So, that’s when I went out and purchased hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of Christmas lights.” While his wife support-ed his efforts, the shopping was Daniels’ responsibility. “Many years,” said Almand, “Chuck was up at 5 AM on December 26 hitting the after-Christmas sales with all the women shoppers!” Daniels noted that he has not purchased a Christmas decoration in the past five years because he already has so many. “I currently have in my attic over one million Christmas lights, and it’s always been my dream to decorate my house with one million Christmas lights,” he said. To do so, however, Daniels said he would have to start the process in June, six months before the holi-

days. “The largest display I’ve ever put up had 450 thousand lights, and that was about eight years ago. ...My electric bill was push-ing two thousand dollars.” Daniels knew he had to scale back. Even then, the annual cost of running the display was still approxi-mately a thousand dollars. Every year it took Daniels approximately four to five weeks to set up his display consisting of 250 thousand lights, “which is a very good display,” ac-cording to him. “Typically, I start the first of Novem-ber, and I have the display up by the end of the first week in December. That gives me approximately a good five weeks worth of decorating,” said Daniels. Surprisingly, he always set up the entire display by himself. “The reason I do it by myself is that there is a technique that a person develops from putting up that number of lights,” said Daniels. “My display... is artistic in nature, it looks

somewhat real, and it has a theme to it. Almand quipped, “He is such a perfectionist, even I, ...another perfectionist, could not unwind lights to his specifications!” Daniels takes a lot of

pride in his work and knows that his efforts brighten people’s lives, lit-erally. “It means a lot to the community, in particular to the residents that live on the street, because every night when they came home from work it’s just a bright light in their life.” He added, “I do it because I enjoy putting all those lights up, and I know the community and people living in Howard County enjoy seeing the lights each

Christmas season. There’s a lot of joy that the people have seeing the display, and I enjoy doing it.” Daniels has never re-ceived a single complaint from his neighbors despite the traffic it brought to the

neighborhood. During the weeks after Thanksgiving, traffic was light, but for the two days leading up to Christmas the number of visitors increased. “There are cars lined up a whole block long, just waiting to drive past the front of my house. I sat there in the living room, and I counted them, and within one hour approximately five hundred cars rolled past the front of my house very, very slow-ly,” according to Daniels.

Daniels and Almand have fond memories of watching others look at the display. Besides counting visitors, Almand noted that they often “enjoyed sitting in our living room watch-ing kids and adults as they

watched and enjoyed the lights.” Many people liked to get out of their cars and walk around, but this never bothered Daniels. “Once, a gentleman proposed to his girlfriend in my drive-way, ...which I thought was kind of cute.” On another occasion, he had a large limousine turn around in his driveway and drive through the lighted arches. This holiday season is the first time in 20 years

that Daniels will create a new, significantly small-er design. “I have to put together a new display, and therefore, I’m going to start out small, and then hopefully I can put togeth-er a very nice display that

will be very attractive,” said Daniels. “We’ll just take it year by year because I have so many Christmas deco-rations, I can decorate the house in so many different ways, and no two years will ever be the same.” While Daniels is ex-cited about the prospect of creating a new, smaller display, Almand remains reflective. “We are still in withdrawal, and we will definitely miss the festive spirit of the community.”

It has been a long time coming- four years to be exact. Vanguard is back and better than ever. Vanguard was and will continue to be a student life section that will be fea-tured in every issue of the Wingspan. In its prime, Vanguard was filled to the brim with things like fun word scrambles, social media parodies, and upcoming dates for music events. This section of the paper gives a voice to students and provides the student body with an opportunity to explore the different dynamics within Centennial. As Vanguard editor, I plan to revamp the section by plunging into the eagle lifestyle., while highlight-ing the diverse interests of the students that attend the school. Themes that are featured in Vanguard will vary. Articles will include everything from new music, student check-in’s, new movies to watch out for, DIY’s and seasonal recipes. You’ll see it all here! The overall vibe of the section is going to be very laid back and student oriented, giving readers a breather from the stresses of high school. Aside from myself, other members of the Vanguard team include sophomores Caroline Chu and Melinda Gwanzura. Our team of hardworking writers are excited to restore Vanguard back to its original glory.

While How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Frosty the Snowman, and A Charlie Brown Christmas are all fine movies to watch while curled up by the fire during the holiday season, not all holiday themed movies have a festive feel to them. There are many seasonal films that are centered around the cheery time, but do not pose as typical holiday movies. Here are a few movies that prove to be a tad unconventional in their holiday spirit:

Unconventional Holiday Movies!

1. Die Hard - Set on Christmas Eve, this 1980’s action movie tells the tale of New York cop John McClane, por-trayed by young Bruce Willis, delivers a stocking of justice to a coalition of German terrorists. Packed with action, drama, suspense, and just a little bit of Christmas spirit, this movie is sure to bring an extra punch of holiday spirit to your household.

2. Nightmare Before Christmas - Tim Burton’s well loved stop motion film provides a dark yet extreme-ly unique view on the holidays, and new perspectives that can be developed during this wonderful time of the year. The main character, Jack Skellington, lives in a world where Halloween is the only holiday. After mistakenly discovering the world of Christmas, he falls in love with its wonder. When trying to adopt Christmas as his own, Jack turns the holiday essentially into Halloween with presents, horrifying the rest of the outside world.

3. Edward Scissorhands - Taking place during the holiday season this classic Tim Burton movie tells the tale of a seemingly unlovable boy who finds approval from a typical American family. This movie tells a tale of love and acceptance, while showing that you do not have to be born into a family to be a part of it.
