Graduation Address delivered by
Professor Frank Brennan SJ AO
The ceremony of conferring degrees and awarding diplomas and certificates is a time-honoured ritual performed at academic institutions throughout the world. It is the moment when awards are formally made, and is a celebration of the achievements of the graduands.
Graduation ceremonies at the University of Divinity celebrate the academic excellence of our students, honour our collegiate structure and reveal the richness of the many Christian traditions which shape our identity.
The ceremony begins with the procession of the University’s academic staff, doctoral graduands, distinguished guests, and members of the University’s Council.
As befits a University of Divinity, the first part of the ceremony includes prayer, song, and a reading from scripture.
The formal graduation commences in the second part of the ceremony, when the Chair of the Academic Board certifies to the Chancellor that all graduands listed in the program, whether present or absent, have completed the requirements of their awards as established by the Council and the Academic Board.
Candidates for coursework awards are then presented to the Chancellor, grouped by Colleges, followed by candidates for research masters’ degrees and doctoral awards.
The guest speaker delivers an address and, following a final song and prayer, the ceremony concludes with the academic procession, now augmented by the new graduates.

University of Divinity Graduation 2019
Welcome. Tonight the University gathers at St Paul’s Cathedral, Melbourne, to witness the graduation of some 410 students.
On behalf of the Council of the University, I am delighted to welcome each graduand to tonight’s ceremony. We honour your academic achievements in theology, philosophy, counselling, education, and ministry.
It is a particular pleasure tonight to welcome, with his guests, our distinguished guest of honour, Professor Frank Brennan SJ AO, who is to receive the University’s highest honour, the degree of Doctor of Divinity.
At this ceremony, each of you becomes a member of the alumni community of the University of Divinity. Our alumni are found in every corner of the globe, serving churches and communities in extraordinary ways. As you join them, I hope that you will draw on your attributes as a graduate of the University, as you continue to learn, articulate, communicate, engage and serve.
I thank all who have come tonight in support of our graduands, including family, friends, colleagues, members of the University Council and the staff of its Colleges. Your support is invaluable to our graduands and to the University as together we address the issues of our contemporary world through critical engagement with Christian theological traditions.

1. Sing praise to the Lord! praise him in the height; rejoice in his word, you angels of light; all heaven adore him by whom you were made, and worship before him in brightness arrayed.
2. Sing praise to the Lord! praise him upon earth, in tuneful accord sing praise for new birth; praise him who has brought you his grace from above, praise him who has taught you to sing of his love.
3. Sing praise to the Lord, all things that give sound; each jubilant chord re-echo around; loud organs, his glory tell forth in deep tone, and sweet harp, the story of what he has done.
4. Sing praise to the Lord! thanksgiving and song to him be outpoured all ages along; for love in creation, for heaven restored, for grace of salvation, sing praise to the Lord!

1. All people that on earth do dwell, sing to the Lord with cheerful voice: him serve with mirth, his praise forth tell; come ye before him and rejoice.

Geoffrey William Cheong Trinity College Theological SchoolThesis: Secularology and Relational Sprituality: Towards an Integral Christian SpiritualitySupervisors: + Dr Peter Price, Dr Edmund Chia and the Reverend Dr Ruwan Palapathwala
This thesis argues that humanity is transitioning the Second Axial Period of History to enter the era of integral consciousness and extrapolates this development as Panikkar’s Cosmotheandric vision. It reviews the Shema – the imperative ‘to love God and one’s neighbour as oneself ’ (Lk 10:27) – for living Panikkar’s vision - Christophany.
Kerrie Jean Handasyde Pilgrim Theological CollegeThesis: Literary Crossings: Nonconformists Writing the Australian LandscapeSupervisors: Associate Professor Katharine Massam and Dr Judith Raftery
This thesis draws on previously unexplored fiction and non-fiction to examine spiritual engagement with the Australian landscape and public authoring of a sense of place among the members of the Quakers, Methodists, Congregationalists, Salvation Army and Churches of Christ (1880s-1960s), and provides a compelling alternative methodology for denominational history.
Christopher James Luthy Whitley CollegeThesis: Rethinking the Acceptable Year: The Jubilee and the Basileia in Luke 4 and BeyondSupervisors: Associate Professor Keith Dyer and Profesor Mark Brett
This dissertation questions the presence of alleged Jubilary motifs in Luke-Acts and argues that such features are better understood within the broader and more explicit tradition of the Basileia of God. Particular attention is given to the Nazareth Pericope (Luke 4:14-30).
Samasoni Moleli Whitley CollegeThesis: Jabez in Context: A Multidimensional Approach to Identity and Landholdings in ChroniclesSupervisors: Professor Mark Brett and the Reverend Associate Professor Monica Melanchthon
This thesis is a rereading of 1 Chronicles 4:9-10 from the perspective of Chronicles as a whole, concerning the issues of identity and landholdings. One hypothesis tested is that Deuteronomistic themes are reinterpreted in light of Genesis, while the hermeneutical suggestion is that the Samoan notion of tautua can illuminate the new concept of service in postexilic times.
Christopher Paul Ryan Catholic Theological CollegeThesis: The Baptismal Catechumenate as a Source for Youth Ministry in a Secular AgeSupervisors: The Reverend Dr Kevin Lenehan and Dr Robert McCarty
The thesis provides a theological rationale for developing youth ministry in the light of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA), constructs a theology of youth ministry on this basis, and suggests practices to engage young people’s faith trajectories as they are depicted in Charles Taylor’s examination of our secular age.

Kezhalezo Angami Yarra Theological UnionThesis: Cross-Cultural Mission: The Impact of the American Baptist Missionaries on the Angami Naga TribeSupervisors: The Reverend Dr Jacob Kavunkal and Dr Edmund Chia
The research focused primarily on how the American Baptist Missionaries who worked in the Naga Hills from 1872 to 1947 helped develop the culture of the Angami tribe. Through this study they were in fact seen as the preservers and custodians of the Angami culture. They shaped the Angami culture and made it resilient for the future.

Paul Raymond Oslington Trinity College Theological SchoolThesis: Political Economy as Natural Theology: Smith, Malthus and their FollowersSupervisor: The Reverend Professor Andrew McGowan
Natural theology shaped 18th and early 19th century political economy, with continuing significance for the engagement of theology and economics. Theological problems such as the role of divine providence in a market economy, and reconciling economic suffering with divine goodness and power, created tensions that contributed to the demise of natural theology and the separation of economics from theology in mid-19th century Britain.

tHe University Badge
The University Badge represents its Vision, Mission, and collegiate identity. The Badge is a star, formed by a constellation of open books. The star is a biblical symbol that appears in the heavens to point wise ones on earth towards the Christ. It is also an Australian symbol, as shown by the federal star and the Southern Cross on the Australian flag.
The books which make up the star represent wisdom, and are open to critical interpretation. The gathering of these many parts into a whole expresses the collegiate shape of the University.
The gold represents excellence. The distinctive accent is red, representing passion and sacrifice which facilitate and flow from the study of divinity.
The constellation of books creates two stars, one on the outside and one on the inside, illustrating the University’s commitment to tradition and innovation. Through critical study, the University brings ancient truths into dialogue with the issues of the contemporary world.
tHe University mace
The University Mace was commissioned in 2017 from F. J. Rocca Silversmiths in Carlton, Victoria. The Mace is based on the University Badge, which appears at the tip of the Mace on a head of brass. The Mace was first used at the ceremony to confer the Doctor of Divinity (honoris causa) on Dr John Behr DD in August 2017 at the Eporo Tower campus of St Athanasius College.
