Cover illustration: THE FROGS AND THE WELL, by Arthur Rackham From AESOP'S FABLES trans V S Vernon Jones, 1912

Two Frogs lived together in a marsh. But one hot summer the marsh dried up, and they left it to look for another place to live in: for frogs like damp places if they can get them. By and by they came to a deep well, and one of them looked down into it, and said to the other, "This looks a nice cool place: let us jump in and settle here." But the other, who had a wiser head on his shoulders, replied, "Not so fast, my friend: supposing this well dried up like the marsh, how should we get out again?"

Think twice before you act.

From AESOP'S FABLES trans. V S Vernon Jones, 1912

from Rev. Stephen Gray Dear Folks,

Later in October I will be taking 8 sixth formers from Seaford College and 4 staff to Rwanda and Burundi for 10 days.

We will be based in Kigali with the Christian Charity REACH (Reconciliation, Evangelism And Christian Healing) and hosted by its director Rev’d Philbert Kalisa, a Rwandan priest and friend.

Philbert’s amazing work seeks to bring reconciliation between Hutu and Tutsi post the genocide of 1994 where 800,000 perished in 100 days. This process of forgiveness and healing is achieved through the medians of sport, dance, music and drama. We will be engaged in some physical work of building a multi-purpose hall for REACH, listening to the stories of genocide victims and their reconciled victimisers and visiting some genocide memorial centres.

It is hoped too that a small group of us that are Graffham based will be able to visit our link parish across the Rwandan border in Burundi. Some of you may recall that we hosted the Bishop of Buye in June and so will visit him, his church and take out gifts of stationery to the school we support. The hospital clinic and the theological college are also places we hope to visit as the funds raised have gone a huge distance in prospering the quality of life in that community to which I am so grateful to you for.

It will hopefully be a moving, inspiring, and for the teenagers an unforgettable trip as we experience something deeply spiritual and outside our comfort zone and experience.

Healing and forgiveness does start at home in each of our hearts, and it is sobering to see the extensive forgiveness that is genuine in Rwanda that pours contempt on our own efforts in the West.

Christ’s words haunt and inspire me each time I visit Africa:

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.”

Convert Apples to Crumbles for Homeless!

Monday 3rd October is

Graffham Harvest

Crumble-thon! The aim is to turn all the spare apples which would

otherwise fall off and get wasted into crumbles which will be frozen for homeless guests at

St Joseph’s Night Refuge

With the bumper crop of apples and extremely windy weather, some of us got started making Crumbles for the homeless in

September delivering a total of 17 delicious home-made puddings to the St Joseph’s Night Refuge.

If you would like to help make more crumbles or would like to donate your windfalls then ring Diane (867 444) or Mary (867 464)

or just come along and collect a foil container at the Harvest Festival Service

To make sure the crumbles are fresh for freezing at St Joseph’s they all need to be made on the same day and delivered in the

evening or the following morning. “Crumblethon” is 3rd October, the day after the Harvest Festival so we can use any spare apples

from the Church.

Target 40 crumbles! Can you help?

Church Times Cup Winners 2011! Each year, 32 diocesan cricket teams play in the National Church Times Cup Competition. Regrettably Chichester Diocese could not field a side which was disappointing as last year we narrowly lost in the semi-finals to the eventual winners Lichfield; so two of us joined neighbouring Guildford Diocese and on Thursday 8th September the final was competed at Southgate CC, a lovely venue that hosts Middlesex when they are not playing at Lords.

Clergy cricket is no “vicars’ and tarts’ tea party”!! We are all out to win the damn thing, though the “sledging” is always given in the Authorised Standard Version and appeals to the umpire are Prayer Book and not from Common Worship! In the semis we even played against two women priests though I guess in Chichester Diocese we probably would have had some that would have given up their love of cricket for their own theological prejudices?!

To quash rumours this summer that your vicar was off to another diocese, it was only for the summer game! Guildford have been great, and hopefully they will invite me and Gary back next year to defend the silverware if we get the right price during the transfer window in January!

Victories over the Dioceses of Canterbury, Winchester, London, Manchester and Lichfield in the final made us 2011 Champions. The final was as close as it gets on a wet wicket and despite the opposition having two bishops playing, (the language altered to Revised Standard Version), we crawled home with one over to spare. A great celebration curry in Southgate capped a top day for the priests!

Lichfield: 204-9 (40 Overs) Guildford: 205-9 (with 1 over to spare!)

Guildford wish to express their gratitude to Graffham Cricket Club for hosting a warm up practice a week prior to their final, it paid dividends, so thank you.

After the mixed fortunes of summer we welcome the autumn season and the start of a new session of Thursday Club.

Our first speaker’s subject is “The Secret Life of the Hedgehog” - a factual look at a fascinating night creature. Graham Bowring ran a Hedgehog Rescue Centre in Southampton for over twelve years. He cared for hedgehogs which were sick, injured or orphaned with the aim of releasing as many as possible back into the wild. His light-hearted and informative lecture will be accompanied by photographs with time for a question and answer session.

Thursday Club Chairman, Sylvia Smith, and the Committee look forward to renewing contact with our existing members and we would be delighted to welcome any new members. Subscriptions are due in October and these are being held as last year at £8.

There is the usual raffle and tea will be served. We much look forward to the pleasure of your company on Thursday, 13th October at 2.30 p.m. in the Empire Hall.

News Update

Autumn gales and rain are upon us and a spring and summer have zoomed by. During the spring and summer we do not work on the reserve but we are still active and carry out butterfly counts, record the plants that are in flower and try to monitor what birds are about. Although we do not have work parties we did have a very successful picnic in June at which we had a good attendance. Bruce Middleton led a walk around Long Meadow and Bowley’s field. We were told that Stitchwort is a cure for exercise stitches, Oldman’s Beard is a cure tiredness and Hoary Plantain is a great midge deterrent.

Apart from plant lore another aspect of our reserve was explained to us. Namely that our reserve sits in an area that is particularly interesting in terms of soil type. There are areas on the top of the Downs that have what is called an acid cap. The acid cap is the result of sedimentation from erosion of the Downs over the millennia. This acid cap sits over the chalk and results in a lot of key indicator species of acid soil thriving on the Downs. This sort of soil and its vegetation is called Downland Heath and is a very rare habitat. Long Meadow and Paterson’s it seems are examples of this habitat and plants such as bell heather, common heather (ling), tormentil, bracken, wood sage, birch and gorse all grow happily. Scots Corner contains plants that are more usually associated with the Downs such as Scabious, Rough Hawksbit, Plantain and Harebells.

John Richardson led a dawn chorus walk in the early summer. The reserve has a very healthy population of LBJ’s (little brown jobs) nesting in the thickets. The birds that were in very good voice were the song thrush, blackcap, garden warbler, willow warbler, chiff-chaff, white throat and tits various. The increased number of warblers is hugely encouraging and it is hoped that our efforts to lower the canopy level and increase the scrub thickness have helped all these birds. The nest boxes John put up have not attracted any owls or kestrels yet but a majority of the dormice boxes that we put up have provided for a tit nest.

We try and monitor the plants that flower on the reserve on a monthly basis. The spring was so dry that the flowers in the early part of the year were very poor. The early purple and common

spotted orchids that were not in the trees withered and failed to flower, and the cowslips were not as good as they have been in previous years. However since the drought warning was issued and the rain ensued the reserve has been spectacular. Bowley’s Field has a greater diversity of flowering plants than previous years and the rank false oat grass is not so dominant. We have recorded over 40 different plants flowering at any one time in the meadows. Autumn Gentians are flowering for the first time in well over 5 years in two parts of the reserve.

The butterflies were good at the beginning of the year with good sightings of Dingy and Grizzled Skippers. The very wet summer has not been so good for the Purple Emperors and the Common Blues. A Brown Hairstreak was recorded on the reserve for the first time this year.

That about wraps up this brief run through of our activities. Butterfly and plant counts will continue in the autumn and we will begin work parties again in October.

Sussex Wildlife Trust

A volunteer reports on

Wildlife Events at Graffham Common August 2011 Graffham Common is the newest site to have been bought by the Sussex Wildlife Trust, and I enjoyed two free events put on by the Trust this month to find out about the local wildlife by night and by day.

The former took the form of a Bat and Moth evening walk, run by Michael Blencowe and Jane Willmott. After a helpful introductory talk with hilarious cartoons courtesy of Michael, we set off with bat detectors for a walk around the Common. These devices convert the high pitched hunting shouts of the bats into squeaks, squawks and raspberries audible to the human ear. You can identify the species from the frequency and the specific noise patterns emitted. For example, the Pipistrelle bat sounds like a clicking Geiger counter but the Noctule bat sounds like someone trying to play a reggae beat on a Rolf Harris-style wobble board! We came across a gorgeous secluded lake where water-bats (Daubentons) were skimming the water surface for insects – it was a wonderful sight to behold.

Next we explored the moth traps and saw many beautiful specimens with great names including the Pine Hawkmoth, the Black Arches (my personal favourite), True Lover’s Knot, Rosy Footman and Lesser Swallow Prominent. Once a selection of trees have been felled and the rhododendron cleared to allow the delicate heathland to flourish, there should be an even greater diversity of moth species, reflecting the general health of the reserve.

On the 26th August I went back to Graffham for a daytime wildlife walk – with three leaders there was much to discuss and I think everyone learned a lot about the history of the area, as well as the

wildlife beneath our feet and in the air. Jane and Michael were joined by Bruce Middleton of the South Downs National Park Authority who introduced us to some of the much over-looked moss and lichen species, and we found some rarer plant species including Common Wintergreen and Yellow Birds Nest. Graffham Common is a site of great potential and I look forward to seeing what the Wildlife Trust will do with it and helping out where I can.

Thank you to everyone who helped make the day a great success: those who spent generously on the day; those who ran the 32 stalls; those who helped behind the scenes preparing and dismantling the ground, baking cakes, and seeking the support of local business; and, of course, those local businesses who support Graffham’s fund raising events so generously throughout the year, year after year. Each year the Fete is budgeted to raise one third of the total cost of maintaining and running the recreation ground, its pavilion, and the children’s playground. Those of you who have used it recently will realise that we have spent little maintaining the Pavilion recently, saving as much money as possible to help fund a major renovation project which we hope to start early next year. Though we still remain some £10,000 short of funds for the entire project, the net profit from this year’s Fete has taken us a lot closer. This year the fete raised net £7,031.52. Every penny helps.

Thank you,

Simon Mitchell

Village Fete Bale Toss Results ... After a lot of muscle flexing, deliberations on the weight of the bales (some saying heavier than last year?), spin tactics, foot faults, bravado and back twinges, Hamish Godman-Dorington and Stephen Hayes from East London were declared joint winners of the Bale Toss Trophy by mutual agreement

The challenge started with an impressive opening throw from Charlie Hancock of Selham at 23ft, beating last year’s winning score by Archie Godman-Dorington.

Determined for the Cup not to leave the village, Hamish Godman-Dorington threw his opening first bale an astonishing 26ft.

Some very long throws followed by Charlie Hancock, one at 27.5ft but the competition turned into a duel with impressive throws from Stephen Hayes, holidaying in Graffham. Stephen’s family were all very proud of their father’s winning throw, an incredible 30ft., and knowing they might be stuck in the late bank holiday traffic on their way home, the Hayes stayed to the end.

Surely that was it? but then a late entry straight from the beer tent, Archie G-D stepped up confidently in flip flops to defend his title, throwing a personal best of 28ft. Not quite enough to win again, but enough to spur Hamish on. The younger G-D in wellies had it this time and he finally threw an amazing 30ft (the new Graffham record) keeping it in the family.

1st Hamish G-D & Stephen Hayes 2nd Archie G-D 3rd place Charlie Hancock

(Stephen Hayes quoted saying "I'll be back!")

The Ladies Haynet Longest Throw was won by Charlie Hancock's Auntie Sue at 21ft., another family affair!

The Tennis Report

At most it was seemingly impossible, at least it was very unlikely, so understandably my Finals’ round-up is centred upon the exploits of Annie Dennig in her quest to land a record breaking four titles in a season!

Are you sitting comfy dear reader - then I will begin with the Mixed Doubles final! Annie was teamed up with the Rev. Steve Gray against the holders Dinah and Guy Lamming. In front of an appreciative audience, with not a peal of a distant church bell, Annie and the sporting Rev had the better of the early exchanges to take a 5-3 lead in the first set. But Guy and Dinah are very much a duo to be reckoned with, and came back strongly to take the set 7-5. As can often happen, the leaders then relaxed a little, and the pendulum swung decisively in favour of the unseeded pair, with Annie and Steve claiming the set 6-1! And midst the throng there was some rejoicing!

Great rallies and fluctuating fortunes came in the decider, but with Steve hitting a bad spell early on the Lamming’s seemed in command when leading 3-0. Then just as the exertions of his previous days triathlon seemed to have taken their toll, Steve was suddenly uplifted, and with Annie her typically determined self the fortunes were again reversed as the challenger’s fought back to snatch the spoils 6-4 in the third! A most entertaining match, when it was a shame to have a loser! A great start for Annie, and congratulations also to Steve who was landing his first title since joining our gathering!

On a much quieter evening, in the week, Annie teamed up with Kathie Gyles for the B Doubles final, opposed by the promising teenagers Polly Lamming and Charlotte Barrie. It was a close first set which Annie and Kathie took 6-4; this led to them soon having control of the second and proving much too strong for the gallant youngsters as they landed the set 6-1. Congratulations to Kathie who was winning her first title, and as for Annie it was two down and two to go!

The Ladies A Doubles had Annie competing as a super-sub when Wendy Challen, unfortunately for herself, and perhaps the rest of

the contestants, was forced to withdraw during her first round robin match. The benefactor being Jo Crow who inevitably, three matches later, found herself with Annie in the final against the undefeated duo of Rebecca Barrie and Dinah Lamming.

One of Annie’s most compelling features is her ability to stamp her authority on matches in the early stages, and with Jo providing consistent support they were soon holding a 5-1 lead in the first set. Initially I could not see Rebecca and Dinah being beaten in this event, and when they staged a tremendous comeback to land the next six games and win the set 7-5, I am thinking oh well, perhaps I am right after all!

As in the mixed Dinah must have had that sinking feeling as she and Rebecca lost their momentum and grip on the match, big time! Factor in awesome Annie’s will to win and Jo’s successful venture to the net, and the second and third sets were theirs 6-3,6-1. Congratulations to Jo who was winning her second club title (won Mixed Doubles in 2008 with son Toby), and Annie who, contrary to previous duff information, equalled Guy Lamming’s 2010 record of 3 titles in one season. But she still had the singles to go!

The pattern continued in the Ladies Singles final with Annie very fast from the blocks, and storming to a 5-0 lead before the title holder Rebecca Barrie could get into her stride. All credit to Rebecca she was undeterred by losing the first set 6-1, and battled back gamely in the second to take a 3-0 advantage. Unfortunately for her the dominance was short-lived, and after some fine tennis by both the resolute Annie had levelled at 4-4. However, Rebecca was still giving it her all, and a glimmer of hope appeared as she edged into a 5-4 lead with a chance to square the match. Not to be, Annie upped the anti, and with the winning line sighted, the gallant Rebecca had no answers. Annie closed out the set 7-5 as she surged to an incredible fourth title! As the ultra competitive Annie is also a very modest lady I will ease off the superlatives! Well done though!!

Andrew Major was a worthy winner of the Men’s A Singles, when he completely dominated the final in which top seed Ben Major was unable to find any rhythm. The slippery surface did not lend itself to total commitment, and it was perhaps a bigger handicap to Ben’s serve and volley style. Nevertheless it was Andrew who produced the superior all round game as he cruised to a 6-1,6-2 victory, and landed his second singles title.

Page 33: Graffham Parish News October 2011 · 6th AUTUMN LECTURE ... St Mary’s Church Petworth 7.30 pm FREE entry - light refreshments ... 2nd-5th Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Long

Page 31

The Men’s A Doubles has been something of a shambles with injuries and availability problems plaguing the event. But with all that behind us the final was of a high standard with a repeat clash of last year’s close encounter between the holders Ben and Sam Major and Andrew Major and David Mozley. Again there was little to separate the contestants as Ben and Sam edged the first set 7-5, before Andrew and David fought back to level 7-5 in the second. The deciding set looked to be going the way of the challengers as they swept into a 4-2 lead, and although the lead was reduced to 5-4 Andrew and David held two match points! The opportunity slid from their grasp, however, as the top seeds rallied and eventually claimed the set 8-6. Ben and Sam’s monopoly of this event continues as they extend their record to 9 titles in the last 10 years.

In the Men’s B Doubles final the encumbrance of a slippery surface, and giving away the best part of a 100 years in combined ages proved beyond Robert Moorby and myself. Young bucks Leo Montgomery and Jonny Crow were quickly into their stride controlling the early exchanges, and comfortably taking the opening set 6-0

There came something of a revival in the second as the valiant veterans plotted their way into a 5-3 lead. Sadly we were unable to capitalize on the situation, and Leo and Jonny powered their way through to 7-5 to land their first title. Both lads played well throughout the event, and I was particularly impressed by Leo who has the potential to compete in our “A” section. My gallant partner Robert has done well despite physical problems, and after a winter of remedial treatment hopes to be back in good shape next year. We will both need to be with the growing band of youngsters that are targeting this event.

13 year old James Lamming became our youngest ever Men’s Singles winner, surpassing the achievements of Anthony Dimmer and Ben Major (1996 and 1997), when he took the B version defeating Harry Challen. 18 year old Harry is something of a natural sportsman, but unfortunately patience and consistency are not part of his tennis strategy. Nevertheless Harry had his moments before James claimed the match 6-3,6-4. James continues to impress and improve, but could be severely tested in the Boys’ final against dual LTA junior winner Guy Brown - read on.

Due to the weather our Boys’ final was played in two parts. Episode one saw the match commence with some superb tennis played by two talented juniors. Although James Lamming had the better of

Page 34: Graffham Parish News October 2011 · 6th AUTUMN LECTURE ... St Mary’s Church Petworth 7.30 pm FREE entry - light refreshments ... 2nd-5th Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Long

Page 32

the early exchanges to lead 4-1, Guy Brown fought back tenaciously to reach 5-5.

In the following game Guy held a 40-0 lead, but some astute tennis by James led to him to recovering the deficit, and his slightly better shot placement and variation in pace enabled him to edge the set 7-5. Rain interrupted play at 1-1 in the second set.

Episode two produced a dramatic swing in fortunes, with Guy quickly grabbing the initiative with some fine attacking tennis. James seemed to wilt under the onslaught as Guy levelled the match, taking the second set 6-1. Unfortunately James capitulated in the decider and was trailing 3-0 when he retired feeling unwell. It has been an excellent summer for James, and it was a shame he could not complete what was potentially one of the matches of the tournament. I am sure he will be back next year in top form.

Not to forget our excellent winner Guy Brown who showed why he is such a successful junior, and furthermore he is keen to continue playing at our club next year.

The season cannot be allowed to fade away without mention of the superb efforts of our Ladies league squads. Firstly the “A” squad who wound up their season with a crushing 8-0 victory at Steep, where Dinah and Olivia Lamming dropped only one game in their 4 sets, and Annie Dennig and Denise Clay helped complete the rout! It looks awfully like promotion to the East Hants League Division 3 beckons, unless Haslemere can achieve the most unlikely in their last three matches. I will report the final outcome on the website.

Graffham “B” squad ended their season with a flourish, gaining away victories at Cheriton and Fernhurst, to finish third in Division 6. Particularly meritorious was a 5-3 win against league champions Fernhurst, where we fielded four of our bright young prospects in Polly Lamming, Lucie Challen, Harriet Cowcher, and Lucy Malton.

We can now hopefully look forward to playing on a decent tennis surface in a couple of months - see some of you then. Apart from that it only remains for me to thank the tournament contestants for taking part, we need all of you to make it work, and retreat to a more reclusive existence for 6 months or so!

See you next season!

Mike Dimmer

A REVIEW OF THE 2011 SEASON

The warm late summer evenings are now drawing in and sadly this heralds the end of another cricket season. We will all miss the glorious sound of leather on willow, the nonchalant flick over midwicket for six. The late in-swinging yorker that outfoxes the wiliest of customers and what about that catch which now features with a regular familiarity over a pint in the pub like a packet of pork scratchings.

I for one will certainly relish the continued conversations about what was and what could have been over the winter break and who knows, by the time the following season starts next Spring, we might actually believe we were that good.

But hold on a minute! There is no need for total embellishment, just perhaps part. In fact we were rather good. Previously having recorded just two victories in back to back games, sorry seasons, this year we notched up a superlative 8 victories. In fact going into the next season we are undefeated in 6 games.

Played 18: Won 8, Drawn 3, Lost 7

No more do we need to dwell on our moral victories (although we had a few of those as well) but we are actually almost worthy of our self-proclaimed name the Graffham Titans. Rather ironic that we had given ourselves this name on a run of 35 games with only 3 victories. But like a phoenix from the ashes everyone played their part in what was one of Graffham’s most memorable seasons in recent years.

The season kicked off on a clear but windy afternoon on the 1st May. Having worked very hard to bolster the squad with a few new players the first game was met with a great deal of anticipation. The nervous eagerness subsequently dissipated as our newly formed opening partnership laboured for half an hour to post 4 runs in 8 overs! Well you know how the tail end of the batting order are often referred to as rabbits. Well we had a pair of tortoises! Bill Barrett and Richard Riddell (signed up during beat the batsman in the 2010 village fete) had mistakenly thought we were involved in a 5 day test match. Apparently Richard’s better half, Miranda, had given him a performance enhancing pep talk prior to the game and encouraged him not to be too aggressive with the bat. Well it certainly worked! The only notable performances with the bat were from Leon Fourie (34), Bill Barrett (23) and Pieter Fourie (21). Our total of 161 was easily surpassed by Steep after tea and they won comfortably by 6 wickets. The pick of our bowlers was Iain Stevenson (3-24)

Page 34

The next game was against Fernhurst. Jack Holloway and Mark Lovelock, our Australasian signings took the new ball but the Fernhurst openers stood resilient. The first breakthrough came after an opening stand of 87 runs. Then the wickets tumbled Jo Pink (3-17), Andrew Tovey (4-10) had them 132-9. Surely a match winning total that could be easily reached. Unfortunately their last pair put on an incredible last wicket stand of 63 pushing the target up to 195. After tea our top order scored impressively Mark Dally (45), Richard Riddell (43), Mark Lovelock (64). At 167-4 you would think we were home. We demonstrated why we were habitual losers and put on one of well known batting collapses. The following 6 wickets fell for a meagre 16 runs. One of our first moral victories (we lost by 13 runs) but we had shown an inkling of our potential which was to be realised later on in the season.

Next up were Tillington. We batted first on a very dry wicket and posted an impressive 220. Largely due to a terrific knock by the vicar. Steve Gray (88). Then it was our turn to bowl Piers Barrett and Steve Gray both bowled 12 overs between them at a cost of just 19 runs, effectively leaving them with an almost impossible task to reach our score. Although we only managed to take 1 wicket they fell short by 9 runs. Our second moral victory, although technically it was a draw as it was a declaration game.

Getting closer and closer to our first victory surely we were not far away. As luck would have it our 4th game of the season was against West Sussex Wanderers. Need I say more, our only victories in recent times have been against WSW. A stand of 99 from Mark Dally (73) and Bill Barrett (28) allowed us to post a winning score of 171 . WSW only managed 120 thanks to some superlative part time bowling from Bill Barrett (2-23) and Sam Ward (2-2).

Having notched up our first victory we approached the following game against Lodsworth in a buoyant mood. Lodsworth are famous for being extremely competitive and not afraid of a punch up in the car park either. Once again we batted first and Mark Dally powered a marvellous 50, accompanied with assured performances from Richard Ridell (23) and Doug Yates (21) (which included 5 consecutive 4s). A young Jo Pink (25) showed promise at no.7. Our total of 148 was going to prove difficult to defend but could we do it? Well yes if they hadn’t cheated. Two clear LBW’s were blatantly disallowed in the final two overs allowing Lodsworth to inch past the post with one wicket remaining. An extremely close affair, although quite tense at times, showed true courage from the Titans.

The following week on a hot Saturday afternoon we hosted a touring side called the Swashbucklers. This was a new fixture for us and hopefully will become one for the future. Organised by Steve Gray we had an enjoyable 25 over game. They proved to be a little too strong

Page 37: Graffham Parish News October 2011 · 6th AUTUMN LECTURE ... St Mary’s Church Petworth 7.30 pm FREE entry - light refreshments ... 2nd-5th Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Long

Page 35

for us and we fell short of their total of 141 by 36 runs. The only notable performances were Iain Stevenson (48*) and the extras (25). Many thanks to Steve for supplying a marvellous BBQ and barrel of beer afterwards.

Next up were our namesakes – Graffham Smithbrook – On a wet and cold June afternoon the opposition scored 229. The only bowler of note was Andrew Tovey (3-48). We only managed 148 and lost by 81 runs. Steve Gray (55*) and Jo Pink (26) were the only stand outs in what was overall a miserable day.

With 7 games down we still only had one victory, albeit some very narrow losses/draws. Next up was Kirdford, our first away fixture. Batting first on a scorchingly hot day we amassed 216. Mark Lovelock (83), Mark Dally (26), Bill Barrett (22), Jack Holloway (32), Philip Stevenson (22). Had we played a limited over’s game this certainly would have been a victory but unfortunately we were not able to bowl them out and they never looked like scoring the required total and thus fell short by 40 runs. Another moral victory which sadly went into the book as a draw.

Lodsworth fancied their chances in a return fixture however we felt differently. We were still feeling rather sore from the earlier fixture. This time we were not quite so polite. Our sledging twins, Archie Godman Dorrington and Richard Riddell unsettled their batsmen throughout their innings in that they crumbled to 120 all out. Leon Fourie (3-15) being the pick of our bowlers. We reached their score comfortably Steve Gray (34), Archie Godman-Dorrington (22), Richard Riddell (19*), and won by 4 wickets. This was another fraught game but this time the best team won.

This victory signalled a massive turning point in the season for Graffham and the Titans were effectively born. Out of the next 10 consecutive games we only lost 2:

10th July Vs Cricketers pub, Duncton. The cricketers were bowled out for 23 and so we won by 9 wickets. Piers Barrett (2-10), Chris Atkinson (2-8), Jo Pink (2-3), Thomas Creed (2-1)

17th July Vs Amberley, On a rain drenched afternoon we fielded during an almost entirely unbroken period of rain only for the sun to come out when it was Amberley’s turn to take the field. Still it proved to be an enjoyable day as we almost chased down their impressive total of 181. We fell just short thanks to notable performances by Leon Fourie (54) and Iain Stevenson (53).

24th July Vs Graffham Tennis Club. For the second year running the tennis club proved an all round sporting capability and beat the cricket club. They won fair and square through some notable performances by Beetle Clay (23), David Sutton (45) and Ben Plant (26). Even more

Page 38: Graffham Parish News October 2011 · 6th AUTUMN LECTURE ... St Mary’s Church Petworth 7.30 pm FREE entry - light refreshments ... 2nd-5th Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Long

Page 36

impressive from the Tennis club was some extremely tidy bowling from all the bowlers with Dan Jones (3-12) being the pick of the bunch. The Titans needed 10 off the final two balls and so lost out in a very close and enjoyable game. The two main batsmen for the Titans were Iain Stevenson (50) and Bill Barrett (31)

31st July Vs Bosham. A strong league team arrived from Bosham but they were not a match for the vastly improved Graffham side. Batting first the Titans made a terrific start. With a stand of 83 our openers Jo Pink (68) and Steve Gray (33) followed by debutant Rob Tong (21) and Richard Riddell (23) all contributing to a match winning total of 163. Rob Tong (3-32) and Steve Gray (3-27) contributed to bowling their team out for 122 notching up another win by 41 runs.

7th Aug Vs Kirdford. On a role now the Titans were becoming unstoppable. Once again Steve Gray effortlessly built another commanding score (81*) and another debutant Richard Tarrant (27) helped Graffham to post 175. Kirdford completely rolled over for 62 allowing us to win by 113 runs. Piers Barrett (2-10), Rob Tong (3-20), Etienne Fourie bowled a very tidy 8 overs for 13 runs ably supported by Jo Pink 5 overs for 3 runs and finally Sam Ward who took 2 wickets in 2 balls. All in all one of Graffhmas finest bowling displays of the season.

14th Aug Vs West Sussex Wanderers. Once again Graffham batted first and our openers dominated Jo Pink (45) and Bill Barrett (45). What followed was a mini collapse but a disaster was avoided by Richard Riddell (36) who put in another assured performance in the middle order. Jo Pink once again impressed with the ball (3-22) as we turned them over for 126. Another victory, this time by 48 runs. It is also worth mentioning that our normal no. 11 batted for the opposition and scored a hefty 45. Well done Piers Barrett perhaps you might be promoted to No. 10 next year!

21st Aug Vs Fernhurst. The pitch was the winner in this game. Piers Barrett, bowler and groundsman had prepared a glorious batting pitch where 580 runs were scored on one afternoon. Two century makers for Fernhurst contributed to a total of 318. We were never going to reach this score in the time allowed although our run rate was superior throughout our innings. Thanks to Bill Barrett (48), Jo Pink (38), Leon Fourie (118*) and Pieter Fourie (28*) we posted our highest score of the season, 258 in just 38 overs. Although we were 50 runs short in the end we had 8 over less than them. Had it been a 40 over a side game we would have won. Unfortunately it was a draw but it certainly proved how far we had come as a team.

28th Aug Vs Lynchmere. For me personally this was the biggest highlight of the season. Traditionally Lynchmere thrash us by at least 200 runs. We knew that this fixture was in jeopardy. Having arrived at the

Page 39: Graffham Parish News October 2011 · 6th AUTUMN LECTURE ... St Mary’s Church Petworth 7.30 pm FREE entry - light refreshments ... 2nd-5th Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Long

Page 37

game with a run of good form we were certainly in a good position to give Lynchmere some sort of a game. Little did we think that we would actually win. Batting first Steve Gray grafted a hard fought (71) supported by Doug Yates (21) and Rob Tong (18). We posted 157. We were going to have to bowl and field like demons. Things were not looking good as their openers took their score to 109 without loss and then the miracle started. A stunning catch by Richard Riddell gave us the breakthrough we desperately needed. What followed was an even better catch by Rob Tong. Suddenly in a whirlwind period where we conceded just 33 more runs we had bowled them out to win by 18 runs. A breathtaking performance largely due to some stand out bowling by Rob Tong (4-11) and Jo Pink (3-27)

4th Sep Vs Stanstead Park. Our final game and it was important to notch up just one more victory to take our wins to more than our losses. Batting first again we were flying. Richard Riddell (47) and Jo Pink (23) gave us another great platform for us to achieve a good score of 171. Nothing was going to stop us now. We had the bit between our teeth and we demolished them by some phenomenal bowling. They surrendered to 47 all out. A victory for the Titans by 124 runs. Piers Barrett bowled a season best (4-5) and part time bowler Etienne Fourie surprised not only the opposition but us as well by taking (3-19).

If anyone is still reading and I’m sorry for the longevity of this report I would like to thank everyone for their participation this year particularly for the incredible amount of time Piers Barrett commits in ensuring a fantastic track and outfield. It really is a great place to play cricket and his work has not gone un-noticed. We regularly got a lot of compliments from various Saturday league players saying that this was the best ground they had played on. Thank you to Simon Mitchell for all his work in organising the fixture list and especially for all the behind the scenes work which is necessary in running the sports club efficiently. Richard Riddell for taking control of catering and sourcing the beers and quality burgers for the popular end of game BBQs. Brett Creed who took over as treasurer this year and incidentally seemed to take a couple more holidays than usual. Chris (Levi Roots) Atkinson for getting injured in the very first game of the season and subsequently missing almost the entire season so that he could take charge of the BBQ festivities and finally to Bill Barrett for the onerous role of making sure everyone has a stab at making the teas.
