For instance, words which perform thefunctionofnamingthingsarecommonlyreferredtoasnouns, andwordswhichperformthe function of expressing states or actions are commonly referred to as verbs.ItshouldbekeptinmindthatmanyEnglishwordscanperformmorethanonefunction.Forinstance,inthefollowingsentences,theunderlinedwordscanbereferredtoasnounsbecausetheyperformthefunctionofnamingthings.e.g.Ihavelostmycomb.Waterisoneofthenecessitiesoflife.However,inthefollowingsentences,thesamewordscanbereferredtoasverbsbecausetheyperformthefunctionofexpressingactions.e.g.Icombmyhaireverymorning.Doyouwateryourplantsonceaweek?Inthisbook,widelyusedtermssuchasnoun,verb,pronounandsoon,willbeusedinordertoexplainthewayinwhichwordsfunctionintheEnglishlanguage.

2.VerbformsEnglish verbs may have different forms, depending on the subject of the verb, anddepending on when the action expressed by the verb takes place.
