Dear Parents and students, Welcome to our penultimate newsletter for term 1. Since our last newsletter, you would have seen a few changes around our school grounds; in particular new signage. The signage is part of bringing our school into the new age of visual communications, by providing clear visual signage for parents, students, community members and other visitors to find their way around our school grounds. In addition to this it clearly marks entry points to the school for our emergency services and, meeting with appropriate State legislations. However, some of our community members, during the hours of 5pm and 5am Sunday 18 March decided that they did not like the new signage around our school and took it upon themselves to remove signage or to break them from their mountings. This vandalism was reported to the Police and I was interviewed in regards to this on Wednesday 21 March. During this interview I handed over the tools allegedly used to cause the damage. As a result of this weekend’s vandalism and disrespect of our community property, I ask all members of our community to notify the police immediately, if they see anyone damaging school property outside of normal school hours. Yesterday, Wednesday 21 March, the school celebrated Harmony Day with many activities planned by the magnificent teaching team. However the rain came and put all but two of these activities out of action; these being the parent afternoon tea and the special school assembly. The parents who attended the afternoon Tea with Miss Jane, our Community Hub Co-ordinator, had a marvellous time having coffee, tea and cake. They then joined the many parents from Pre-school, Support Unit and Mainstream Classes at the assembly. Our assembly spotlighted several of the activities which occur daily in our specialist Arabic and Chinese community language classes. I would like to thank the Harmony Day Committee and Community Language Teachers for their efforts in ensuring the assembly’s success . A Newsletter for the Community of Granville Public School

Granville Grapevine

From the Principal’s desk…………... Dear Parents and students,

Welcome to our penultimate newsletter for

term 1.

Since our last newsletter, you would have seen a few changes around our school grounds; in particular new signage. The signage is part of bringing our school into the new age of visual communications, by providing clear visual signage for parents, students, community members and other visitors to find their way around our school grounds. In addition to this it clearly marks entry points to the school for our emergency services and, meeting with appropriate State

legislations.

H o w e v e r , some of our community members, during the hours of 5pm and 5am Sunday 18 March decided that they did not like the new signage around our school and took it upon themselves to remove signage or to break them from their mountings. This vandalism was reported to the Police and I was interviewed in regards to this on Wednesday 21 March. During this interview I handed over the tools allegedly

used to cause the damage.

As a result of this weekend’s vandalism and disrespect of our community property, I ask all members of our community to notify the

police immediately, if they see anyone damaging school property outside of normal

school hours.

They then joined the many parents from Pre-school, Support Unit and Mainstream

Classes at the assembly.

Our assembly spotlighted several of the activities which occur daily in our specialist Arabic and Chinese community language classes. I would like to thank the Harmony Day Committee and Community Language Teachers for their efforts in ensuring the

assembly’s success .

Prior to our Harmony Day Assembly I attended Auburn Girls High School for the Special Community Luncheon that they held as part of their Harmony Day Celebrations; this was my first visit to the school and I had a lenglthy discussion with Principal Anna Tsoutsa on how our two schools can work to-gether as an extended learning community. As a result of this discussion we have allocated time in our schedules next term

to commence this new project…WATCH THIS SPACE! Finally, thank you to all the staff for the hard work that they put in on a daily basis to ensure that Granville Public School delivers a well balanced learning programme, designed to meet

the learning needs of every student who attends.

While some Stage 2 students went to Swim

Scheme, the remaining students have been

busy at school learning about 3D shapes. On

Wednesday 21 March, students designed

and made a robot out of recyclable materials.

They have to describe

the shapes which they

used and try and make

their robot stand up on

its own. They had so

much fun designing

and creating these

robots. Well done

Stage 2.

Term 1, Issue 4 Thursday 22 March 2018

This year the theme for Harmony Day is Everybody

Belongs.

And, how true this is of Granville Public School and

her Community; we have a rich mix of cultures,

religions, ethnic groups, and sexuality. We are

accepting of all of these and welcome them without

prejudices and open arms; a beckon for the rest of our

society in my eyes.

I trust that you enjoy the small piece, below, which is

from https://www.harmony.gov.au/ .

I look forward to your feedback on my leadership of

Granville Public School;

21 March is Harmony Day

Harmony Day is a day to celebrate Australian multiculturalism, based on the successful integration of migrants into our community. Australia is the most successful multicultural country on earth and we should celebrate this and work to maintain it. Harmony Day is about inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians, regardless of cultural or linguistic background, united by a set of core Australian values. Held every year on 21 March. The Day coincides with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. Since 1999, more than 70,000 Harmony Day events have been held in childcare centres, schools, community groups, churches, businesses and federal, state and local government agencies across Australia.

How to celebrate? Let’s come together with friends and family and through schools, workplaces and our wider communities to celebrate our diversity on and beyond 21 March. Getting involved can be as simple as hosting an event or attending a local celebration. Visit out ‘Get involved ’ page for more information. You can connect with us on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram for more

information including simple ways to celebrate our diversity every day.

Why orange? Orange is the colour chosen to represent Harmony Day. Traditionally, orange signifies social communication and meaningful conversations. It also relates to the freedom of ideas and encouragement of mutual respect. Australians can choose to wear something orange on 21 March to show their support for cultural diversity and an inclusive Australia.

Our cultural diversity Australia is a vibrant and multicultural country — from the oldest continuous culture of our first Australians to the cultures of our newest arrivals from around the world. Our cultural diversity is one of our greatest strengths and is at the heart of who we are. It makes Australia a great place to live. An integrated multicultural Australia is an integral part of our national identity. All people who migrate to Australia bring with them some of their own cultural and religious traditions, as well as taking on many new traditions. Collectively, these traditions have enriched our nation.

Facts and figures There are some fascinating statistics about Australia’s diversity that can be good conversation-starters: nearly half (49 per cent) of Australians were born

overseas or have at least one parent who was we identify with over 300 ancestries since 1945, more than 7.5 million people have

migrated to Australia 85 per cent of Australians agree multiculturalism

has been good for Australia apart from English, the most common languages

spoken in Australia are Mandarin, Arabic, Cantonese, Vietnamese, Italian, Greek, Ta-galog/Filipino, Hindi, Spanish and Punjabi

more than 70 Indigenous languages are spoken in Australia.

These facts are taken from ABS 2016 Census Data. Check out the Australian Bureau of Statistics website.

A big thank you to everyone who supported our

Book Fair and an extra thank you to the

wonderful mothers who helped throughout the

Book Fair.

We sold over $5,000 worth of items and earned

approximately $1,000 to purchase resources for

our school library.

If you missed the opportunity to purchase from

the Book Fair, please do not worry, we will be

having another one in August during Book Week.

Premier's Reading Challenge has started.

https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/home.html

Students in Years 3 to 6 are encouraged to read

20 books - 15 from the Premier's Reading

Challenge book list and 5 free choice books.

Primary students will need to register on the

above website – where all information needed

can also be found.

K-2 Students will be automatically registered

and will participate in the challenge as part of

their library lessons.

Privacy Information taken directly from the web page

Two conditions of entering the Challenge are that students may receive a certificate and their name may appear on the Gold or Platinum Honour Roll. Certificates have the student's name and school printed on them. The Honour Roll lists student names in the PRC website only. Names are listed in alphabetical order (not by school) and no other identifying features are included.

Students who do not wish to receive a certificate or have their name published on the Gold or Platinum Honour Roll (or whose parents/carers do not wish them to) should not register for the Challenge. These students may take part in the Challenge unofficially - they may use the PRC booklists and can seek recognition in their school community - but they cannot add any books to an online Student Reading Record.

If you do not wish for your K-2 student to be

registered for the Premier’s Reading Challenge

please send a note to their class teacher.

Happy reading.

REMINDERS TO PARENTS

Term 1, Issue 4 Thursday 22 March 2018

Early in Term 1, 2018, the Active Kids program will be launched. This is a NSW Government Office of Sport program to support families by making money available to help support things like registration fees and uniforms for their child/children's sport outside of schools. The department is supporting this important project by helping promote the program, but schools and staff are not expected to have an administrative role. This advance notice is in acknowledgement that you may receive enquiries from families once the program launches. All details and registration will be through https://sport.nsw.gov.au/sectordevelopment/activekids, and any enquiries from parents or caregivers can be directed to the Office of Sport. In addition we will promote this through social media and websites to make it as easy as possible for families to find the details, and reduce the enquiries coming in to schools. Supporting children and young people to make physical activity a life-long habit, and a key priority of the Premier's, and we thank you in advance for your support for this program.
