Educational program
The educational program in each of the design disciplines is primarily undertaken through practical design work.
Initially at an introductory level, work progresses to advanced levels through study of traditional visu-
alization techniques, knowledge of materials and production methods and training on professional tools
(hardware and software). Gaining a solid grounding in cultural issues is equally important: an awareness of
cultural, philosophical, anthropological, sociological and economic topics allows a fuller understanding of
any given challenge and the ability to adapt to new professional situations and generate novel solutions. In
addition, it is vital to be able to present a design project effectively with supporting rationales and to have
a good knowledge of both theoretical and practical methodology.
The educational program is structured over six semesters, for a total length of three years, each year with
specific objectives.
The first year is an introductory course, a foundation in design that equips students with fundamental
rules, tools and guidelines for cultural references.
In the second year, students concentrate on methodology and assisted design work.
Students expand their knowledge and abilities in specific professional areas through supervised practical
work, technical study and work on cultural characteristics. Particular emphasis is placed on the evolution
of design contexts and markets as well as the language of design.
The third year consists of advanced design work and of simulation of professional situations, which go to
address the specific abilities of designers in each professional area.
The culmination of this educational journey comes in the sixth semester with the dissertation project,
a complex and structured piece of work undertaken in groups.
Businesses and associations looking for original and innovative design solutions work in collaboration
with IED students on the final projects.
This project work motivates students to develop self-sufficiency in design, the ability to make coherent
and reasoned choices, to work together with a client and to take on well-defined responsibilities.
This semi-professional experience can prove an invaluable calling card as students enter professional
employment.
Teaching is entrusted to professionals from the various design sectors in order that changes in the rapidly
evolving arenas of national and international design can be immediately reflected in the course content.
The modules described are obligatory for all students and form the basis for examination or evaluation.
During the three year course, other educational opportunities will be available such as design workshops,
topical seminars, participation in competitions, conferences, special projects and visits to companies and
manufacturers.
Participation in these activities is complementary to the structured modules, and forms an integral part of
the overall course.
Individual and laboratory work is also a vital part of the educational program.

The professional role
Graphic Designers are visual communication specialists. They work with clients to create tools for visual
communication through the use of images and visual language to convey the clients’ message or values
to the target audience.
Graphic designers work in a truly innovative way, blending traditional knowledge of graphics with the use
of professional software and digital media and solving technical and production problems that arise.
Today, a graphic designer must possess the technological and managerial skills not only to design
and create communication projects themselves, but also to work as art directors or managers for
communication events.
To compete in today’s growing global market, image and visual communication professionals must be
able to tackle complex design pathways, ranging from planning and co-ordinating tasks and managing
multidisciplinary teams, to dealing with clients from both public and private sector.
Creative ability has to be combined with technical knowhow, a sound foundation in design history,
understanding of social and cultural contexts, a sharp critical eye and above all the ability to express all
this knowledge in the final product.
This course aims to educate aspiring graphic designers with these capabilities and includes cross-
disciplinary topics such as new digital media, corporate identity, product communication, publishing
graphics, work with advertising agencies and public relations.

FINAL PROJECT
The administration reserves the right
to make changes to the syllabus in accordance
with the established academic goals of the course.
Students will work on their final project
in groups, and will tackle complex issues
in project design.
The primary goal is to identify research pathways
that simulate real professional situations,
and to develop competency and autonomy in
project design. The groups will be monitored by
senior and junior members of the teaching faculty
as well as professionals. The final project is usually
organized in collaboration with an external partner
(a company, public or private body or association)
which is the client for the project.
The project is augmented by various seminars
on specific issues of cultural, technological or
professional relevance. Topics and organizational
structure of the project are determined and
announced at the start of each academic year.
