Forage Quality

Plant breeders have achieved substantialincreases in plant yield and diseaseresistance during the last few decades andthese have been documented in the variousNational and Recommended Lists. Morerecently the plant breeders’ focus hasturned to forage quality and this willincreasingly be reflected in theRecommended Lists.

ME and Digestibility (D) Value are probably the most reliablemeasures of a variety’s feed value but often these are onlymeasured once or twice during a plants’ growing season and can bemisleading. Plant breeders have, to date, been unable to determineand isolate the genes responsible for D value but they have foundthe genes responsible for sugars (WSC) and digestible neutraldetergent fibre (DNDF) and have selected varieties for theseattributes.

Whilst WSC seems to be one of the drivers of forage quality, it islikely that too much emphasis has been put on this attribute andthat the benefits to livestock and the environment have beenexaggerated. Nevertheless it still plays a role in the rather biggerpicture of forage quality. DNDF is now receiving plant breedersattention as we all know that fibre plays a huge role in ensuring therumen works efficiently, but if the proportion of indigestible fibrecan be reduced and replaced with digestible fibre, animalperformance isbound to improve.

Protein is usuallylow in varietieswith high sugars,but some tetraploidvarieties, naturallyhigh in sugars, haveproved theexception to therule.

Our aim for the verynear future is tothoroughly map the

nutritional data of all the varieties we use so that we can combinevarieties with complimentary characteristics in our mixtures tofurther improve your livestock’s performance.

The table below based on limited data from two trials illustrateshow different varieties may have completely different nutritionalattributes which can be combined for maximum benefits to stock.

PalatabilityTrials over many years have repeatedly proven that tetraploidryegrasses are more palatable than diploid grasses (including highsugar diploids) and that they are more efficiently grazed andutilised. The disadvantages previously associated with tetraploids;open swards and poor persistency, have mostly been eradicatedby the efforts of plant breeders, thus enabling the proportion oftetraploids used in mixtures to be higher.

Disease ResistanceDisease resistance plays a major role in forage quality because avariety with the best forage quality and good palatability canoffer stock none of those attributes if it is badly diseased.Diseases not only impair the performance of grasses, but alsolivestock will refuse to eat badly diseased plants.

Varieties from our own breeding are rigorously screened forresistance to all the major diseases in our nursery in France aspart of the breeding programme. This is why Limagrain varieties

have excellent scores for disease resistance on therecommended lists.

Establishing Your NewSinclair McGill Ley� Lime the field if necessary to achieve a pH as close as

possible to 6.5

� Check the drainage status – undesirable weed grasseswill soon invade waterlogged fields

� Analyse soil and correct any nutrient imbalances –‘normal’ soils will require around 40 units/acre of N, Pand K. White clover is particularly sensitive tophosphate and potash levels

� Prepare a firm, fine and weed-free seedbed

� Roll prior to seeding to close gaps

� Broadcast or cross drill and then roll or very lightlyharrow to ensure seed is no deeper than 6mm

� Sow at a suitable time – ideally when the soil is warmand moist. Grasses and clovers will germinate between5-10°C but require higher temperatures to achievesatisfactory growth

Our experience of the Matrix Enhanced®Ryegrass mixtures now spans three years onIrish farms and eight years in northern Franceand has included the two harshest winters formore than two decades.

However, farmers using Matrix 40 and Matrixwith Timothy have enjoyed enormous successwith very early production in the spring, laterproduction in the autumn and total annual yieldssignificantly exceeding conventional mixtures.

Frequent defoliation by cows, beef cattle orsheep is a prerequisite and many farmers arenow exploiting this type of grazing regime andreaping the benefits of Matrix Enhanced®Ryegrass mixtures.

MATRIX ENHANCED®

What is Matrix Enhanced® Ryegrass?Matrix was developed by Cropmark® in New Zealand and it is acomplex inter-generic hybrid consisting of about 80% diploidpasture Perennial Ryegrass and 20% Meadow Fescue.

What is Matrix For?Matrix was bred as a high quality grazing grass with a muchextended grazing season and very rapid regrowth. This makes itespecially suited to paddock management or rotational grazingsystems, but it can also be used for set stocking.

Benefits of Matrix Enhanced® Ryegrass � Grows at lower temperatures than ryegrass giving up to 3

weeks extra growth in the spring!

� Matrix also grows much later in the autumn than ryegrass,giving up to another 3 weeks extra grazing!

� Very rapid regrowth particularly when defoliated at the 3leaves per tiller stage

� Very dense fine leaved sward resists poaching and treading

� Complex genetic make up enhances forage quality anddigestibility. For best results graze when there are 3 trueleaves per tiller

Matrix Enhanced® Ryegrass MixturesManagement Guidelines

Sowing RateWe recommend a sowing rate of 12.5 kilos/acre but it can besown at higher seeding rates. The pack size is 25 kilos.

Sowing TimeTreat as you would any conventional grass/clover mixture.Depending on where you are located, the clover may notgerminate if sown too late in the autumn when soil temperaturesare falling. Spring to mid-August is ideal.

Sowing MethodTreat as any grass mixture, drill or broadcast into a fine, firm seedbed and roll in afterwards. If drilling, we recommend that MatrixEnhanced Ryegrass Mixtures are cross drilled.

GrazingMixtures are more easily managed on a paddock grazing systemas pioneered in New Zealand, where Matrix was developed.

When the Matrix in the mixture has 3 true leaves per tiller, it isready for grazing. At this point, it is likely to yield between 2500– 2800 kgs DM/ha. After grazing the residual grass should be1400 – 1600 kgs DM/ha for cattle and 1000 – 1200 kgsDM/ha for sheep. If grass gets beyond the 3 leaf stage prior tograzing, quality will drop and regrowth will be slower. If you areusing a rising plate meter, you will need to make allowances forthe improved density of a Matrix based mixture.

On a typical New Zealand system, every paddock will be grazed10 -12 times a year.

Matrix should be grazed hard or cut low late in the autumn,before the onset of winter to avoid winter kill.

CheviotA specialist blend primarily made up of very small leavedvarieties with excellent persistence to stand up to the rigoursof intensive and close grazing by sheep. As sheep are selectivegrazers it also includes some clover with large leaves which actas a “decoy” during the establishment phase.

TweedA highly adaptable and persistent blend, for inclusion in longterm mixtures. The range of leaf sizes enables Tweed to adaptto suit all classes of livestock and most management systems.

Sinclair McGill pioneered the development of clover blends inthe 1980’s in association with IGER. Certain principles wereestablished that are still valid today but the varieties we nowuse are far superior.

HEADSTART® is a revolutionary grass seedcoating which helps ensure a “top speed”germination. It was developed exclusively forour use and is certainly one of the mostimportant innovations within the grass seedindustry. The wafer thin film includes aseaweed extract (which promotes celldivision) and several trace elements andorganic compounds that attract moisture. Inless favourable sowing conditions the use ofHEADSTART® can result in up to 20% moregerminated plants and the treatment meansthat grasses can emerge, on average, 4 daysearlier than untreated seeds.

HEADSTART® is a user-friendly andenvironmentally safe product and its potentialperformance – especially under difficultsowing conditions – has been welldemonstrated in a comprehensive range ofsmall and large scale trials in the UK.

After several years of extensive trials weintroduced Integral®. Agricultural mustardDepending on soil fertility and soil moisture a good crop ofmustard for ploughing in can be obtained from applying 30-40units of N. Huge yields of around 15 tonnes of greenmanure/acre can be achieved from 80 units of N.

RIVONAThis variety offers fast growth potential, excellent leafproduction and good tolerance to drought. The rapidestablishment of this variety means that it can competesuccessfully against weeds in late autumn.

SERVALThis is a variety which develops considerable bulk with a gooddry matter yield – an important requirement for successfulgreen manuring. A key feature with Serval is that the varietycan help to reduce free living nematodes – particularly sugarbeet nematodes (Hederodera schachtii). Secretions from theroots of Serval encourage the nematodes eggs to hatch.However, Serval is not actually a host plant and so thenematodes die – consequently the nematode population onthat particular field can be greatly reduced.

Results from Seedtech Fodder Beet Trials 2012


It’s been long heralded that Blizzard has huge potential to producevery high dry matter yields. Trials at Seedtech for the past 2 yearshave proven this against some of the most recognised varietiescurrently used in the market. In 2012 alone, Blizzard with a drymatter percentage of 21.8 delivered over 17 tonnes of DM perHectare with its closest rival being Magnum only delivering 15.1tonnes DM per Hectare.

Because of Blizzards high dry matter and percentage of rootbelow ground level it has the advantage of allowing growers moreflexibility with regard to harvest date. There will also be a saving inoverall harvesting costs due to the high dry matter (i.e less waterbeing harvested and transported). Blizzard can thereforecommand a premium price if being sold on farm, compared tolower dry matter varieties. Blizzard also has a low dirt score,considering that over 70% of the root is in the ground.

Equestrian Mixtures

This mixture has been formulated to providegrazing for horses and ponies with intermittentrests from grazing to produce a hay crop.Depending on any herbs present we wouldrecommend the addition of a minimum of 250grams of mixed herbs per acre (either mixedwith the grass or preferably sown in strips in thesward) to improve the nutritional aspects of thesward.

The mixture is designed to perform well withmoderate inputs of nitrogen, but a goodapplication before closing off for hay willproduce the best results.

Our popular range of equestrian mixtures continue tosatisfy the demands of a diverse range ofrequirements from horse hay to herbs.

All our mixtures (which are packed in 10 kilo bags)have been specifically formulated after extensiveconsultation with Equine Nutritionists. Theytherefore avoid high sugar grasses, popular in

agriculture, because they can increase the risk ofLaminitis in horses and induce “stroppy”temperaments in mares.

The requirement in a mixture can vary depending onthe type of horse involved and these mixtures coverthe range of requirements we have had over theyears from racing gallops to pony paddocks.

Horse Paddock Mixture

This mixture is designed to produce a verydense, springy sward, capable of withstandingvery heavy wear and is of course also perfectlysuited to racecourses and polo pitches.

Naturally the regular maintenance of this areawill pay off by ensuring the turf maintains itsspringy nature.


Gallops & Schooling Area Mixture

This mixture is designed to produce high qualityhorse hay with that special 'nose' that can onlycome from a good Timothy content. It will alsoprovide useful grazing in the early spring and duringlate summer and autumn. In winter it should only begrazed lightly if a good hay crop is desired.


Horse Hay Mixture

This mixture is designed to produce a good, wellbalanced sward especially suitable for mares andtheir foals. The deep rooted herbs will improve thecalcium and phosphorus levels, being two of themore important trace elements so important for thegrowth and bone development in young horses.


Stud Paddock Mixture

The Stallion Paddock mixture is formulated towithstand harder wear whilst still maintaining adense, springy and nutritious sward. It containsMONDIAL turf type perennial ryegrass, which israted very well indeed for its wear tolerance andearly growth.


Stallion Paddock Mixture

Our herb mixture has been especially developedfor horses and ponies and includes a number ofdeep rooting and nutritious species whichprovide a good source of minerals and traceelements.

Our mixed herbs are included in selected grassseed mixtures, but are also available separatelyfor sowing in strips or islands in the field whichoften gives better establishment.

A short term mixture for the production of qualityhaylage. High in fibre, but with a good "nose".

TestimonialsDairy farmer Michael Walshof Hightown Farm in CountyCork has been experimentingwith a number of differentgrass seed mixtures andmonocultures. He has been insearch of swards whichdeliver high DM yields, arepersistent and also palatableto his cows. Michael hasfound ley mixtures from theSinclair McGill range, satisfyall three of theserequirements: Turbo,Castlehill, and a grass mixturecontaining Matrix EnhancedRyegrass.

Michael normally reseeds some of his landevery year, but was prevented from doing solast year due to the poor weather. This year, hewill be reseeding 30 acres of ground that he hasjust taken on. However, it’s an exposed fieldwhich gets quite wet. So he has decided to re-seed with Castlehill, a high performing dual-purpose long-term ley mixture from the SinclairMcGill range.

Michael adds: “I’ve looked at a lot of different optionsfor leys - both mixtures and individual varieties. AndI’ve come to the conclusion that I’m very happy withthe Sinclair McGill mixtures I’ve sown – they’veproven themselves to deliver on all three of my goals– yield, persistency and palatability.”

Michael explains: “I’ve just sown the one paddockwith Matrix, so that I can evaluate how it standsup to the winters here, and see just howproductive it is. So far, it’s looking very good! Infact, when my conventional ryegrass leys havebeen yielding around 13t DM/ha, the Matrix leyhas achieved nearer 15.5t/ha of DM.

“It’s noticeable that the ley grows back fasterthan in other fields, making it ready to grazeagain 2 days earlier. And in the new year, TheMatrix ley is the first to start growing again, andlast to stop growing at the end of the year.”
