Starting school

Thank you for considering our school for your child!Great Rissington Primary School is situated in the heart of the Cotswolds. The original village school, opened in 1897, is in a traditional Victorian building, which has been extended and refurbished to high standards. Ofsted, in our most recent inspection, graded the school as OUTSTANDING, praising the levels that our children achieve in all areas of the curriculum and the skilful way in which teachers plan lessons to motivate and challenge pupils. At Great Rissington we aim to make school a happy experience, where individuals are valued, achievements celebrated and where children are happy and feel safe. We have a tremendously energetic and creative staff, all committed to providing a wonderful primary school education for all learners. Our Ofsted report and our SATS results speak for themselves, but we believe the best way to get a flavour of life at Great Rissington Primary School is to come and see us in action!

Our curriculum

Starting school

Children from the age of 4-11 are welcomed to our school from the Rissingtons and villages in the surrounding area. Applications for reception children beginning school are through Gloucestershire Local Authority and directly through the school from then onwards. On completion of primary school, most of our children move on to The Cotswold School in Bourton-on-the-Water.

Our outstanding curriculum is focused on providing real-life activities that are relevant to pupils’

experiences, as we believe that children learn best when they are involved in their learning. Children in Key

Stage 2 benefit from specialist PE and French teachers. Our inspirational class teachers, with help from trained support staff, plan meticulously to ensure that the statutory elements of the National Curriculum are taught in a way that will motivate pupils and challenge them to achieve their potential. We are proud of the high academic standards that our pupils consistently achieve.

Children at Great Rissington Primary School make good use of our hall and the splendid village sports’ ground. Children in years 4-6 swim at Bourton Leisure Centre. Sporting events organised through The Cotswold Partnership, which is supported by The Cotswold School, enable our children to compete against schools in the area in a huge range of activities such as cricket, TAG rugby, hockey, cross-country, orienteering, football, netball, gymnastics, athletics and rounders. Our pupils do very well in these events as our collection of silverware demonstrates!

Celebration

All children have different strengths, which are shared during the weekly celebratory assembly. Children can be given a range of awards and certificates, which include Headteacher’s Award and Magnificent Mathematician. Each child belongs to a house and can be awarded points which are tallied during this assembly. All achievement is published in the school newsletter and on the website. In addition, each class hosts an assembly three times a year, to which parents are invited to see what their child has achieved.

We aim to develop children’s appreciation of the school’s place in the local village community as well as bringing an understanding and appreciation of the world, its needs and concerns. Great Rissington Primary School has

close links with the community, supporting local activities such as the village litter pick up and the produce show.

We are part of the North Cotswold community of schools, which work closely together offering opportunities for children to work in partnership on curriculum and sporting events.

Friends of Great Rissington

We have a very active ‘Friends of Great Rissington Primary School’. Parents of children in school automatically become members of the Association which is supported by staff, parents and the local community. Various events are organised throughout the year in order to bring parents together socially and to raise funds to support the school.

A range of music lessons are available to children who express a desire to learn to play an instrument. In addition, a range of after school

activities are also offered. Currently, children from Years 1- 6 can choose from computers, board games, netball,

games, drama, choir, gardening and recorders. These clubs are run voluntarily by teachers and parents.

We aim to promote a warm, happy, caring environment in which the joy of learning can be discovered, along

with the realisation of social and academic potential. We respect each child as an individual and help each to

develop a positive self-image and respect for others. The staff and governors see our school as a family and welcome the involvement of parents not only in helping in class, but also in giving views for the strategic development of the school, particularly in developing our MAD (Making A Difference) Plan, which steers the continuous improvement of the school. Great Rissington pupils have been awarded the Green Flag award from Eco Schools on three consecutive occasions, which confirms the care and pride that the children have, not just in their own school, but for the future of their world.

RASCAL Out of school care

RASCAL operates before school from 8.15am and after school until 5.15pm, supporting working parents with childcare. The provision is

registered with Ofsted and is run by an experienced teacher.

Making a difference

The future

Additional housing in the area has resulted in our popular school expanding onto a second site. The new build, situated in Upper Rissington, has been designed to embrace modern technology and features environmentally friendly aspects. Managed by one headteacher and governing body, children attending school at either the village or Upper Rissington site will benefit from the same outstanding curriculum and established routines.
