Douglas Niedt is a native of St. Louis. Mr. Niedt began his study of the guitar at the age of seven with his fa-ther, an amateur guitarist. He later polished his playing to gem-like brilliance through studies at the Juilliard School and the Segovia Master Classes in Spain, and with Christopher Parkening, Narciso Yepes, and Jorge Morel.

He made his New York debut at the age of 21 in Carnegie Recital Hall. Since then he has appeared be-fore enthusiastic audiences across the country, prompting one critic to write, “Mr. Niedt is not only a brilliant master of his instrument, but a performer of great sensitivity. The wealth of sound and the dynamic finesse which he elicits from the guitar promise to make him a worthy companion of the few great guitarists such as Andres Segovia and Julian Bream.” His CD Pure Magic, Christmas CD In Heavenly Peace, performance video Douglas Niedt-American Virtuoso, and published arrangements are available on his website: www.DouglasNiedt.com.

Mr. Niedt’s new book about how to succeed in the music world, How to Make a Million Dollars Play-ing the Guitar, has just been published and is available on his website and www.Amazon.com. Recognized for his excellence in teaching, he is head of the guitar program of the Conservatory of Music and Dance, University of Missouri at Kansas City.

The Madraliers choral ensemble is a select group of 38 undergraduate and graduate students representing a variety of disciplines and majors at Northwest Missouri State University. The study of repertoire for the choir ranges from the Renaissance to contemporary composers. In 2006 The Madraliers were selected to perform for the Missouri Music Edu-cators Association Conference. In 2008 the choir was selected to perform for the American Choral Directors Associa-tion Southwest Division convention in Kansas City. The talent and versatility of the singers are further demonstrated each spring as the choir becomes Celebration, performing vocal jazz and show choir repertoire. Dr. Brian Lanier is associate professor of choral studies at Northwest Missouri State University where he conducts The Madraliers, Celebration, and The University Chorale. He teaches undergraduate and graduate classes in choral conduct-ing, music education, choral literature, and studio voice. He holds degrees from Stetson University, Southwestern Bap-tist Theological Seminary, and The Florida State University.

Ensembles under his direction have performed for The American Choral Directors Association, Missouri Music Educators Association, and Florida Music Educators Association. He maintains a steady schedule of appearances as a guest conductor, clinician, adjudicator, and advisor for musical groups and schools. In March 2008 he was the guest conductor for the North Dakota All-State Choir. This past summer he conducted a study abroad choir in performances throughout Italy and Austria, including an invited performance at the Dom Salzburg.

Prior to his appointment at Northwest he taught secondary vocal music for sixteen years in Orlando, Florida. For eleven years he was Chorus Master for The Orlando Opera Company, conducting performances as well as preparing choruses for more than thirty main stage productions.

Romancero Gitano - Translations

Lleva azahar, lleva olivas, Andalucía, a tus mares.

Little Ballad of the Three Rivers The river Guadalquivir flows among orange and olive trees. The two rivers of Granada come down from snow to wheat. Ah, love that left and didn't return! The river Guadalquivir has a garnet-colored beard. The two rivers of Granada, one tears and another blood. Ah, love that went off on the breeze! For boats under sail Seville has a road; on Granada’s waters only sighs row. Ah, love that left and didn't return! Guadalquivir, tall tower and wind in the orange groves. Dauro and Genil, little towers dead above the pools. Ah, love that went off on the breeze! Anyone can tell the water carries a will-o’-the-wisp of screams! Ah, love that left and didn't return! It carries orange blossoms, it carries olives, Andalusia, to your seas. Ah love that went off on the breeze! The Guitar The weeping of the guitar begins. The goblets of dawn are broken. The weeping of the guitar begins. It is useless to silence it. It is impossible to silence it. It cries monotonously as the water cries, as the wind cries over the snowfall.

The Guitar cont. It is impossible to silence it. It weeps for things far away. Sand of the hot South that begs for white camellias. It weeps arrow without target the evening without morning and the first dead bird on the branch. Oh guitar! Heart gravely wounded by five swords. Dagger The dagger goes into the heart like the blade of a plow into barren land. No. Don't drive it into me. No. The dagger like a ray of sun sets fire to the terrible hollows. No. Don't drive it into me. No. Procession Along the side street come strange unicorns. From what field, from what mythological grove? Nearer, now they seem to be astronomers. Fantastic Merlins and the Ecce Homo. Enchanted Durandarte, Orlando furioso. Float Virgin in crinoline, Virgin of Solitude, open like an immense tulip. On your ship of lights you ride on the high tide of the city, among murky saetas and stars of crystal. Virgin in crinoline, you ride on the river of the street out to the sea!

Escarabajo sonoro.

Saeta (Gypsy processional song for Holy Week) The swarthy Christ changes from lily of Judea to carnation of Spain. Look where he’s coming along! From Spain. Sky clean and dark, earth scorched, and ditches where water runs very slowly. Swarthy Christ, his locks of hair singed, his cheekbones protruding and his pupils white. Look where he’s going! Memento When I die, bury me with my guitar beneath the sand. When I die, among orange trees and mint. When I die, bury me, if you wish, on a weathervane. When I die! Dance Carmen is dancing through the streets of Seville. Her hair is white, and her eyes are shining.

Girls, draw the curtains!

Coiled on her head is a yellow snake, and she dreams of dancing with suitors of days gone by.

Girls, draw the curtains!

The streets are deserted and in their depths can be glimpsed, Andalusian hearts looking for old thorns.

Girls, draw the curtains! Castanet Castanet. Sonorous scarab.

In the spider of the hand you curl the warm air, and drown in your trill of wood.

Castanet. Sonorous scarab.
