GREEN LIVING THROUGH GREEN BATTERIES

This template can be used as a starter file to give updates for project milestones.

SectionsRight-click on a slide to add sections. Sections can help to organize your slides or facilitate collaboration between multiple authors.

NotesUse the Notes section for delivery notes or to provide additional details for the audience. View these notes in Presentation View during your presentation. Keep in mind the font size (important for accessibility, visibility, videotaping, and online production)

Coordinated colors Pay particular attention to the graphs, charts, and text boxes. Consider that attendees will print in black and white or grayscale. Run a test print to make sure your colors work when printed in pure black and white and grayscale.

Graphics, tables, and graphsKeep it simple: If possible, use consistent, non-distracting styles and colors.Label all graphs and tables.

INTRODUCTION

Batteries and the Society

GREEN LIVINGA lifestyle which seeks to bring into balance the conservation and preservation of the Earth's natural resources, habitats, and biodiversity with human culture and communities.

What is a Battery?A device containing an electric cell or a series of electric cells storing energy that can be converted into electrical power

Eco-friendly BatteryA battery that do no harm to the environment.Non-eco-friendly BatteryA battery that is hazardous to the environment.

TIMELINE of BATTERY

1798:Italian physicist Alessandro Volta makes the first battery. His voltaic pile as it comes to be known- consists of stacks of zinc, acid-moistened cardboard and copper.1839 Fuel Cell - William Robert Grove developed the first fuel cell, which produced electrical by combining hydrogen and oxygen.1859:Gaston Plante invents the lead-acid battery used in cars up to this day.

1898:Conrad Hubert creates the first flashlight; he calls it an, electric hand torch.

1900s:Thomas Alva Edison improves the car battery. His other battery improvements make their way into trains, and mines. This becomes one of Edisons biggest cash generators: meeting or exceeding the light bulb and the motion picture machine

1954Solar Cells - Gerald Pearson, Calvin Fuller and Daryl Chapin invented the first solar battery. A solar battery converts the sun's energy to electricity1992:The first lithium batteries are commercially available. These are the most powerful AA-size batteries on the market.

2000-2012:Innovations in rechargeable technology introduce products such as Nickel-Metal hydride rechargeable batteries, titanium high-performance batteries, and 15-minute rechargeable batteries as well as the innovations of green batteriesFuture:The future is both bright and challenging for batteries. A battery has been developed in Israel that can be printed on paper. This can open up huge possibilities for handheld devices and other personal electronics. Fuel cells may take over as the favorable form of portable energy & more development of green batteries

Types of BatteryDisposableNot designed to be rechargeable

RechargeableA rechargeable battery or cell

Parts of a Battery

Anode During discharge, the negative electrode of the cell is the anode. During charge, that reverses and the positive electrode of the cell is the anode. The anode gives up electrons to the load circuit and dissolves into the electrolyte.Cathode It is an electrode that, in effect, oxidizes the anode or absorbs the electrons. During discharge, the positive electrode of a voltaic cell is the cathode. When charging, that reverses and the negative electrode of the cell is the cathode.Electrolyte A chemical compound which, when fused or dissolved in certain solvents, usually water, will conduct an electric current.

Electrode An electrical conductor through which an electric current enters or leaves a conducting medium, whether it be an electrolytic solution, solid, molten mass, gas, or vacuum. SeparatorThe permeable membrane that allows the passage of ions, but prevents electrical contact between the anode and the cathode.Vent A normally sealed mechanism that allows for the controlled escape of gases from within a cell.

Terminals The parts of a battery to which the external electric circuit is connected.

Negative Terminal The terminal of a battery from which electrons flow in the external circuit when the cell discharges.

Positive Terminal The terminal of a battery toward which electrons flow through the external circuit when the cell discharges.
