Children’s Department NewsSummer Reading Program ~ 2013

“Dig into Reading is the theme for our Summer Reading Program this year, and we invite children ages 3 1/2- 10 to sign up to do some reading and attend some very exciting programs.

Registration began June 24 for the overall program which is taking place from June 24-August 9, but there’s still time to sign up! A complete brochure detailing all of the programs is available in the Children’s Department.

The statewide Rhode Island Summer Reading Program is supported by the RI Office of Library and Information Services with funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the Pawtucket Red Sox, Citizens Bank and Pepsi. Local support includes the Smithfield YMCA, A & W Restaurant, Uno Chicago Grill, and the Friends of the Green-ville Library.

Book Buddies: Tuesdays 10:30-11:30 am and 6:30-7:30 pm for ages 3 1/2-8.Buddy sessions begin on July 2 and continue on Tuesdays July 9, July 16, July 23, 30, and August 6.

Bedtime Storytime: Wednesdays 6:30-7:15 pm for ages 3 1/2-5 1/2. Register the week before each session. Storytime dates are July 3, July 10, July 17, July 24, July 31, and August 7.

Art classes with artist and teacher Adele Karbowski for children ages 6-10. Fridays, July 5, 19, and August 2 @ 10:30 am. Sign up for one or more.

Mad Science: Monday, July 8 @ 10:30 am for families with children ages 4-10.

Paws to Read: Mondays 6:30-7:30 pm for ages 6-10; read with Maxwell, a pet therapy dog. Sessions will be held on July 15, 22, 29, and August 5. Sign up to read for a 20 minute session.

Ronald McDonald Show: Friday, July 12 @ 10:30 am for families with children ages 3 and up.

Carolyn Martino, Storyteller: Wednesday, July 17 @ 10:30 am for families with children ages 4-10.

Sarah Gardner, Musician: Wednesday, July 31 @ 2:00 pm.

Summer Craft Programs for ages 6-10.July 1 @ 10:30 am Garden Gnome Craft. July 15 @ 10:30 am Paint a silly snake.July 24 @ 2:00 pm T-shirt craft. July 29 @ 2:00 pm Sand painting. August 5 @ 10:30 am Fossil fun.

Malik the Magic Guy: Friday August 9 at 2:00 pm for families with children ages 4-10.This program concludes the Summer Reading Program. Grand prize winner to be drawn. Refreshments served.

Children’s Bubble DisplayEleven-year-old Abigail Parente will display her rock and clay miniature collections in the Children’s Bubble for the month of July. Abigail enjoys finding different shaped rocks in her backyard to collect. She hand-makes her clay miniature collec-tion which includes figures such as flowers. Don’t miss seeing Abigail’s interesting collections!

“Dive into Music this Summer” with Anne-Marie Forer”s Music Together program for families with children ages 5 and under. There is a fee for this class. Register with Anne-Marie @ [email protected] or call 401-739-4171. July 11-August 15.

Young AdultsThe Summer Reading Program sign up

the ages of 11-17 stop by to register at

the Welcome Desk. There will be weekly

prize drawings and a GRAND PRIZE of

a 7” tablet. Create a Comic Book Character

with Eric Fulford

on July 10th

at 2:30.

Learn how to design and

illustrate a comic book

cover from the ground

up! He will guide you

through the process and

provide tips and

techniques as you create

a professional illustration, layer by

The Baker Room will be open most

Monday and Wednesday afternoons this summer

starting on Wednesday, June 26th. Teens looking

for a place to come to cool off, meet friends, play

games, use the computers, watch a movie and

maybe do a craft will find it here in the Baker

Room. Check the schedule on our website or on

FACEBOOK (Greenville Public Library

TeenScape) to find out what is going on from day

to day. The program is called “Afternoons in the

Library”. Hours will be from 2:30-4:30 and no

sign up is needed.

Weekly interactive displays including a QR

Scavenger Hunt, Book in a Jar, Design your own SuperHero and Banner Art will be in the Young Adult Area. Stop by anytime and try them out.

Hasbro’s Safe Sitter The program for kids ages 11-16, will be on Monday, July 15th

from 9:00-4:00. Essential skills for sitting are included in this program. Come in to register and pay the discounted fee of $35 which includes all of the materials. Limited space so sign up early!

Teen Yoga Thursdays at 2:30 starting on July 11th for 5

weeks and ending on August 8th.

Sign up is required and is on the

“calendar of events” at

www.yourlibrary.ws Yoga mats will

be provided but you may bring

your own if you would like. The instructor is

Renee Maxwell from the Smithfield YMCA. The

cost is FREE!!!

Book Buddies is a great

way to earn community service hours during the summer. If you love reading to children this is the program for you. Sign up is at the Welcome Desk. The program will be every Tuesday from July 2nd to August 6th at 10:30 and at 6:30. You may volunteer for one or both time slots.

Scary Movie Marathon is coming this summer on July 3, 17, 31 and August 14

(2:00-4:30). Movies will include “The Birds”, “Jaws”,

“The Sixth Sense” and “Signs”. No sign up is

necessary. Snacks will be provided. Bring a friend

and get a treat.

Fun Fused Glass Class (June 26 at 2:30) is our first program of the summer. Enjoy creating fused glass pendants inspired by your favorite books with Deenie Pacik. You will use colorful pre-cut glass, crushed glass, powders, and dichroic glass. Every student will create multiple pendants to keep for themselves or give as gifts. Sign up is required. Anyone 11-17 is invited. Cost is free!!!

Learn to Sew will be on Monday, July 29th and

Aug 5th from 2:00-4:00. Learn to cut out a pattern

and sew on a machine to complete a simple project.

Everything will be provided. If you have a machine,

please bring it :). Sign up online or call the library at

949-3630. Space is limited.

We have a display of the Smithfield High School Reading List books in the Young Adult Area.
