July 8 & August 12 @ 1:00 July 8th —JULIE & JULIA, rated PG13, Biography & Romance—with Amy Adams & Meryl Streep. Julia Child's story of her start in the cooking profession is intertwined with blogger Julie Powell's 2002 challenge to cook all the recipes in Child's first book. August 12th— STILL ALICE, rated PG13, Drama, with Julianne Moore, Alec Baldwin. A linguistics professor and her family find their bonds tested when she is diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease.

July 15 @ 1:00 Brought to you by Salmon VNA & Hospice. Topics to be covered are the natural wear and tear on the body, how decreasing hormones levels can create osteoporosis concerns, how different diseases can lead to pain, which medications to use to aid in pain relief, and precautions with over-the-counter medications.

Mosquito-born Disease Workshop July 1 @ 1:00

Frank Cornine, staff Biologist at Central Massachusetts Mosquito Control Project will be conducting the presentation. The presentation will include information basic mosquito biology, risk factors, disease information and prevention strategies for older adults.

Ice Cream Social hosted by Senator Michael Moore

August 10 @ 12:30 State Senator Michael Moore will be cooling us off with ice cream.

Sister Act—The Musical July 29 @ 8:30

Travel to Meredith, New Hampshire where you will enjoy a full course luncheon at the famous Hart’s Turkey Farm, then we’ll attend Sister Act at the Lakes Region Theater. The cost of trip is $81, $20 deposit due at sign-up. This includes lunch, coach transportation and the show.

Mechanic’s Hall Organ Concert & Coney Island Trip

August 5 @ 10:00 Enjoy the famous Coney Island hot dog for lunch and an organ concert by a young artist named Monica Czausz. Cost is $7 for transportation and show, plus cost of lunch is on your own.

Preparing your Car for an Emergency July 28 @ 1:00

AAA’s the car doctor and RSVP Worcester area volunteers bring you this presentation on preparing your car for an emergency. Those who drive should consider attending this valuable presentation.

Ice Cream Social hosted by Representative David Muradian

July 9 @ 1:00 State Representative David Muradian will be cooling us off with ice cream.

This is a unique opportunity to go to Boston and tour the state house. Representative David Muradian’s office arranged a special tour and LUNCH. The cost of the trip is $10, which includes lunch. Seating is limited, so please sign-up as soon as possible.

The Power of Hydration July 27 @ 1:00

Patti Toupin, RN and Claudia Dexter, Community Liaison from Senior Comfort Services will be presenting some “Fluid for Thought” on the importance of hydration in seniors. Sample cucumber & mint water, recipes will be available and raffle prizes too!

Programs on Summer Vacation! Many of our regularly scheduled weekly programs will still occur, but some will be on summer vacation. Here are the programs that will return in September. Shuffleboard, cribbage, pool league and FINE meetings.

Medicare Appeals If you have Medicare, you have the right to appeal decisions you disagree with. All steps in the appeal process have specific time frames and other requirements. It is very important to pay attention to the time limits for appeals! Some appealable situations are: Medicare denies your request for a health care service,

supply, or prescription Medicare denies payment for health care that you have

already received Medicare stops covering services that you are receiving Medicare pays a different amount than you believe it

should Medicare drug plan denies coverage of your medication For assistance with appeals, the Medicare Advocacy Project (MAP) provides free advice and legal representation. MAP can assist anyone with Original Medicare or a Medicare Advantage Plan, regardless of income. For assistance from MAP, call the Massachusetts Senior Legal Helpline at 866-778-0939. For more information on Medicare Appeals go to our website shinema.org and view our latest “Medicare and More” Program. The Central Mass SHINE Program Staff and our Counselors wish all of our Seniors a very safe and enjoyable summer. Our next newsletter will be out for September. Trained SHINE (Serving Health Information Needs of Everyone) volunteers can help you! They offer free, unbiased, confidential counseling on all aspects of health insurance to anyone on Medicare. Call your senior center and ask for a SHINE appointment. You can also call 1-800-AGE-INFO (1-800-243-4636), then press or say 3. Once you get the SHINE answering machine, leave your name and number. A volunteer will call you back. You can now visit us on the internet at shinema.org

“SHINE’S MEDICARE AND MORE” PROGRAM The Central MASS SHINE Program is now sponsoring a monthly Cable TV program called SHINE’s MEDICARE AND MORE”, we hope your local cable channel will pick it up. This program is designed to educate and update MEDICARE beneficiaries and their families on MEDICARE and other programs that can assist you with your health insurance needs. If you don’t see it on your local cable channel give them call and ask about it.

Who are the Friends? Friends of the Northbridge Elders is a private non profit corporation providing financial support for the Northbridge Senior Center. Meetings for FINE are on the first Thursday of the month at 3:00 p.m. excluding July and August and are open to all. Decisions are made on fund raising and disbursements of funds based on requests from the Council on Aging and suggestions from members and others.

FINE Membership Become a “Friend” of Northbridge Seniors by subscribing to a membership. See FINE Dues below. Yearly membership to FINE is open to all.

FINE CAR WASH FINE car wash fundraiser at Advanced Auto Parts was a great success. Thanks to all who brought in their dirty cars and also to those that just donated and to Advanced Auto Parts for the use of their facility.

FINE Annual Meeting & Banquet The Annual FINE Banquet at the Willow Brook Restaurant in Mendon was very successful. Good food and entertainment by Gary Lundgren, the Honky Tonk Man was enjoyed by all. Three new members were voted on.

Senior Center Gift Certificates Want to give a friend or relative a gift certificate to attend one of our wonderful trips or other activities? We now are offering gift certificates that you can purchase for any amount and for anyone. Mystery Trip, RI Lighthouse Cruise, or Maple Trip would be great reasons to treat someone to a gift certificate.

Transportation Reminders Local Transportation via Senior Center Bus All requests must be made 24 hrs in advance unless there is an emergency appointment. You can always cancel if your plans change. Out of Town Transportation via Volunteers All requests must be made at least 48 hours in advance. All fees must be placed in the provided envelope - we ask that you do not tip the drivers as they will receive a mileage reimbursement from the Senior Center.
