Greetings to one and all!

A very happy new year to you! With the start of 2014, it is apt that we give glory and praise to God for His continued blessings. As a school, we have much to celebrate for our successes and achievements in 2013. We are

pleased to announce that our class of 2013 were very happy with their results and we applaud their achievement for PSLE 2013. We wish them every success as they embark on the next phase of their journey in life. We will miss them very much. We also want to thank our supportive parents who are our partners in educating their daughters.

This year we will celebrate CHIJ’s 160th Anniversary in Singapore. The students and staff of CHIJ OLQP did their part for the school by collecting pledges for the upcoming PERI upgrading project through a fundraising Walkathon and Food Carnival held on 14th March 2014. Under the lead of Mr Tan and a group of pupils, everyone began the much anticipated day by doing a warm-up exercise routine to the song “I’ve Got a Feeling”. After which they proceeded to the starting point where the Guest-of-Honour, Sister Joan, officiated the flag-off.

The Primary 1 and 2 pupils walked within the school grounds, while the rest of the students took a longer route - Primary 3 pupils walked around the church compound and Primary 4 to Primary 6 pupils walked around the Dairy Farm canal near the school. Each class set off in an orderly manner, stopping at a few water points where they could refill their water bottles. Together with the pupils, parents and teachers, all of them enjoyed the leisure walk along the canal flourished with greenery.

Having completed the Walkathon, everyone headed back to school where they were enjoyed the food carnival. At the carnival, the parent volunteers from the Parents’ Support Group sold many scrumptious treats. A kind donor also donated lots of ice cream and every pupil had a free ice cream! To add to the spirit and fun, there were also some attractive booths where activities such as Henna design, face painting and balloon sculpting were held. The pupils also showed their commitment to the environment conservation by disposing used bottles, tetra packs and cans into the recycling bins. This is part of the Ecoflag movement to practise fair play and eco-play in the sporting and everyday lives.

Term 2 English Language Week and International Friendship Day- 7 April to 10 April 2014

WSA-ECThe Whole School Approach to Effective Communication (WSA-EC) has gone digital, starting with ICT tools such as Moo-O, Newsmaker and CHIJ OLQP very own Grammar Police Apps. The upper primary pupils have been actively playing their roles as Grammar Police Agents by capturing and sharing evidence of posters / signages / phrases and sentences that were written in grammatically incorrect English “because bad English should be a crime”. Thereafter, all pupils were invited to correct and post their comments on the errors found in the evidence. What a great way for our pupils to champion, learn and advocate the importance of Effective Communication! During the CCE Carnivals in Semester 1, our WSA-EC booths have also started using iPad games suggested by pupils to reinforce the correct way of speaking and writing English. The sight of iPad minis at the booth definitely caught the attention of many pupils who came forth to have a go at the WSA-EC games. Going digital has its perks, but some things are most appreciated when they are “real”. One example is our WSA-EC mascot Miss Wise! Mostly seen as a digital image on WSA-EC Class Meeting and Broadcast slides, Miss Wise came “alive” during the English Week to meet and greet our teachers and pupils while highlighting the ‘No Singlish, Know English’ WSA-EC slogan. What a treat, especially for the lower primary pupils!

The English Department and the National Education Committee came together this year to plan engaging activities for the pupils. This year’s theme is “Speak the Language of Friendship” and the pupils had a week of fun-filled activities to promote the love for learning the English Language. The pupils also learnt ways to show appreciation and mutual respect towards the international community. The opening ceremony was graced by our Principal, Mrs Tan and our very own cute and intellectual mascot, Miss Wise. During Class Meetings, pupils learnt about the diverse cultures and they greeted one another in different Asian languages. Besides having an array of class-based activities like dessert-making and video-recording using the Newsmaker, the P1 and P2 pupils had a period of DEAR Programme which means Drop Everything and Read at the school library during their EL lesson. The National Library Board also hosted a mass book borrowing session for the P3 to P6 pupils. During Social Studies, pupils engaged in group work to complete an interesting crossword puzzle on countries in the region. They also discussed the essential virtues to live out in order to build strong and lasting friendships with our international friends. The highlight of the week was none other than the CHIJ Young Poets and Storytellers Competition which was held on 10 April 2014. Lower primary contestants recited poems on friendship and upper primary contestants put up skits related to the same theme as well. The winner of the CHIJ Young Poets was Eashaa Pillai from 2 Hope and the winning group for the CHIJ Storytellers came from 5 Hope. Well done, girls! All the pupils definitely had a jolly good time watching the performance. The English Language Week and International Friendship Day 2014 had certainly ignited the love and passion for reading and writing in our pupils. Thank you, teachers and pupils for all the support and involvement during the week.

From the Mississippi River to the River Amazon, pupils were immersed in a journey learning about the endangered species, animals’ adaptation for survival and how all of us can play a part in conservation of the environment.

Math Exploration Day 2014The aim of the Math Exploration Day is to provide a platform for the pupils to learn Mathematics beyond the classroom curriculum. The activities exposed pupils to the applications of real world Mathematics such as getting them to work out their walking speeds and estimating lengths and areas in their classrooms. The pupils showed a stronger understanding of the subject when using manipulative such as blocks, tangram sets, measuring tapes and stopwatches.

Parent Symposium 2014on 29th March 2014, CHIJ OLQP organized a seminar for Primary 5 and 6 parents on how they can help their daughters in PSLE Mathematics. Brownies 2014 On 22 February, the Brownies attended the World Thinking Day celebration held at New Town Secondary School. During the celebration, the Brownies learned more about 5 different countries: Armenia, Benin, St. Vincent and Grenadines, Egypt and Bangladesh. They took part in activities related to these countries such as food tasting, playing traditional games and learning traditional dances. 8 P6 Brownies were involved in conducting the activities on the country, Armenia, for all the Guides and Brownies present.

On 15 March, the Brownies took part in the World Water Day. They started off by walking from Gardens by the Bay (East) to Marina Barrage, then taking part in activities such as learning a hip-hop dance and visiting the various exhibition booths. They also completed a learning sheet on water conservation in Singapore.

On 3 April, the Brownies learnt how to make soap from natural ingredients such as goat’s milk and essential oils. They sold the soap they made during Honours Day to raise fund for the school. They raised a total of $336. It had been a meaningful and memorable experience.

ICT-Cyber WellnessOn 12th February 2014, four of our Primary 4 pupils were selected to attend “The Cyber Wellness Student Ambassador Programme” (CWSAP) in the School of Science & Technology. This Conference provided an extended platform to engage pupils’ voice and promote cyber wellness peer advocacy. The objectives of the CWSAP were to complement existing cyber wellness education efforts by providing an extended platform for pupils to voice out issues on cyber wellness and engage pupils in cyber wellness advocacy through discussions on cyber wellness issues and formulation of peer advocacy projects. At the end of the conference, pupils were able to share good cyber wellness practices and strategies. The pupils had an enriching time and are ready to hold the title, “Cyber Wellness Ambassadors”.

On 18th March 2014, some Primary 5 pupils attended the WZCOE Science Enrichment Camp at River Valley High School. The theme of the camp was “Under the Sea”. Based on this simple and yet imaginative theme, a series of interesting workshops was held. Our pupils had the opportunity to design a high speed boat using the principles of aerodynamics and grow their very own sea garden filled with “coral reefs”. They also constructed a life pod that was to be launched out to the ocean safely.

York ExperienceThe wonderful experience at the Robert Wilkinson School in November 2013 had been an enriching learning journey for us as we immersed ourselves in the school environment. We had fun interacting with the pupils and conducted a drama session about Sang Nila Utama for them. The enthusiasm showed as the pupils took on the roles of Sang Nila Utama and acted the roles out professionally. We were amazed by their drama skills! The most memorable part of the experience would be the warm hospitality of the pupils, teachers and staff from the school. They made us feel welcomed and every moment spent with them had been splendid! What a great learning experience!

Character and Citizenship Education

Character and Citizenship Education (CCE) seeks to nurture pupils into responsible citizens with good character through planned and meaningful learning experiences. As such, our school has embarked on the ACE the Virtues programme which was introduced in the beginning of the year. ACE the Virtues serves as a platform to acknowledge positive behaviours and cultivate good moral values exhibited by the pupils. Deserving pupils will be rewarded with ACE the Virtues stickers which they will paste on their ACE the Virtues card. This programme provides opportunities for pupils to uphold our school vision - Learner, Leader, Lady. Let ACE the Virtues together!

National Education @ CHIJ OLQPEach year, the school commemorates four key National Education events, with the aim to develop national cohesion and rootedness to Singapore. These events are: Total Defence Day, International Friendship Day, Racial Harmony and National Day. Through them, the pupils and staff gain awareness of the facts, circumstances and opportunities facing the country. They also build emotional belonging to the community and nation.

VIA Department On 7th Mar 2014, the VIA Department collaborated with the Restroom Association of Singapore (RAS) to conduct a hand washing activity for the pupils. During their recesses, pupils practised the correct way of washing hands and checked if their hands were free of germs after washing. The pupils participated actively and learnt the importance of maintaining personal hygiene.

The stickers motivated us to be good pupils.

Total Defence DayIn February, the school commemorated Total Defence Day. It marks the fall of Singapore to the Japanese on 15th February 1942. This poignant day involves every resident in Singapore playing a part, individually and collectively, to build a strong and cohesive nation that is well-prepared for any situation. In the spirit of the theme this year, “Because You Played A Part”, the pupils displayed a deeper understanding of the individual’s effort in maintaining the stability of Singapore as a home for its people. They are reminded of what it means to have a home – one that is safe and secure. Collectively, pupils created collages of what home means to them and wrote message of conviction to uphold the five pillars of defence: military, economic, social and psychological. In addition, they drew comics that depicted examples of these messages. The pupils participated actively in a special Total Defence Carnival during recess. Through simulations of obstacle courses, they learned how military defence is key to ensuring the security of a community. The message of Total Defence was presented again during assembly in a school-wide quiz entitled “Finding the Missing Piece”. The interactive segment required the involvement of the audience to answer a set of quiz questions correctly to open a series of combination locks that would eventually locate the crucial missing piece in a jigsaw picture – symbolic of the collective effort needed to make Singapore a home that we love and cherish. In the following week, the school participated in a fire evacuation drill to instill a sense of readiness for emergency situations.
