Ross Penhall


- Ross Penhall is a famous Canadian artist who mainly paints nature scenes. The first of the Ross Penhall pantings I have selected is named “Engagement”. Ross used Oil Paints to create this masterpiece but did not date it. I really like this piece because it is has lots of interesting colors in the trees, grasses and even the sunset behind the hills in the back. My second favorite Ross Penhall painting is named “Opposing Sides” which was also done using Oil Paints. And remarkably was also not dated! I don't like this piece as much as the other one because it doesn't have as much contrast in the colors but I still like how he has put Reds, Yellows, Greens and even Oranges into his trees.

Lawren Harris


Lawren Harris- Lawren Harris is a Canadian artist in the “Group of Seven” who mainly paints canadian winter scenes. The first Lawren Harris piece that I have selected is called “Afternoon Sun”. It was painted in 1924, using oil paints. This is by far my favorite Lawren Harris painting because it is much different from all of his others as they all have snow in them wheres this one is sunny with the sun just starting to set, It makes me feel very happy. My second Lawren Harris painting is called “Mt. Lefroy” also being done with Oil Paints back in 1930. I really like this piece of art because all the lines on the mountain are very bold making it pop out from the sky. I also like how she uses very few colors but still is able to make it look interesting.


Emily Carr__________________________


Emily Carr


Emily Carr- Emily Carr is a famous female Canadian Artist who is heavily associated with the Group of Seven. The first Emily Carr piece I have chosen to critique is called “Big Raven”. This painting was done way back in 1931 using Oil Paints. Personally I think the painting itself is very well done with great detail but it gives me a depressing feel, due to the dark sky at the top of the picture. The second of the two Emily Carr pieces, I like much more. It gives you a happier feel as the sun is rising over the mountains in the background, pushing away the dark, gloomy sky. The piece created in 1936 is named “Shoreline”. It was done using Oil Paints just like most of her other work.
