We will once again be opening our school grounds for community use during the upcoming school holiday period. The bottom playing field, basketball/tennis court and cricket nets will all be available for use. The remainder of the school will be out of bounds for safety and security reasons. A security guard will patrol the school and be responsible for opening and closing the gates. I encourage you to take advantage of this great initiative and utilise our beautiful school grounds.

Gaming v Real Life

At our recent school assembly I shared a story about our experience of playing ’spotlight’ at school camp. In what proved to be one of the highlights of camp (for the teachers at least), students and teachers participated in a night time game of commando (spotlight). Students were tasked with the challenge of finding six hostages who were being held in the bush by their captors (the teachers). Students were given life tokens (milk bottle lids) and were required to work in teams to sneak through the bush, under cover of darkness, and free the hostages. If students were caught by teachers (spotlighted) then they had to return to base camp and win another life token before trying their luck once again.

The game evoked memories of childhood for the teachers and brought out a level of competitiveness I have not seen before. As for the students, they were subjected to numerous failed attempts and adrenalin bursts from being sprung in the dark by a teacher. One of the students said to a teacher, “This is just like playing Fortnite”, to which the teacher replied, “This is no game, this is real life”. In a world where digital gaming is encroaching further and further into the lives of children, it was a timely reminder and wonderful example of the rich fun that can be had with nothing more than a torch, milk bottle lid and the great outdoors. The Game of Go!

We were incredibly fortunate to have a member of the Australian Go Association come to our school today to teach the students in Years 3-6 the game of Go. Go is a traditional game that is very popular across a number of Asian countries, particularly in Japan. It is a game of strategy that involves players using black or white rocks to control and occupy as much ‘land’ as possible. The students loved the challenge and understood the concepts quickly. The Australian Go Association donated a number of Go sets to our school and we hope to include this activity during Japanese club.

5S is an amazing collective of students who are involved in all aspects of the school community. We have Library Monitors, Stage 3 Dance Group members, District and Regional swimmers, cross country and athletics representatives, musicians and many other varied an wonderful skills. The year so far in 5S has been exciting and productive. We have been very busy in writing covering the Seven Steps and focussing on our planning to write skills. Science is a well loved subject in our class and currently we are looking at our built environments and in particular the demountable classroom. We are engaged in lessons to begin to design and build a model of a Sustainable Demountable Classroom that suits the needs of our class and school. We recently enjoyed all travelling to The Great Aussie Bush Camp and getting to know each other even more than we have come to connect in the classroom. The camp tested our courage and strength when faced with challenges and also encouraged our team spirit to support each other.

What We’re Learning

5S students really want a class pet—Mrs Stone is not sure how this will go

Did you know that a banana is a herb and not a fruit? Before the invention of colour TV 75% of people said they

dreamed in black and white. Today only 12% do.

SYNERGY DANCE FESTIVAL On 6 June and 11 June the Stage 3 Dance Group performed at the Synergy Dance Festival at the Evans Theatre in Penrith. They performed a number entitled "Moment of Truth"; a story of harmony, the realisation, that despite appearances, we are all born with the same heart beneath our skin. The performance was received well by the audience and the students thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to dance in the theatre with all the lights and backstage excitement.

During the matinee performance, Elijah McGregor and Elroy Clifton were the comperes for the performance. They were amazing ambassadors for Grose View Public School and are to be commended on an outstanding effort.

A special mention to Megan D who not only performed with our school dance group but also with the PULSE dance group at Synergy. PULSE is select group of students from schools in NSW. Megan will be performing at the Sydney Opera house in July this year with the PULSE dance group and we wish her well.

Congratulations to all the students involved on a very successful performance at Synergy 2019.

STAGE 3 CAMP The Great Aussie Bush Camp was a wonderful experience for our Stage 3 students and teachers! During our time at Kincumber we all participated in many different activities that tested our strength, fear of heights and determination. We participated in many different activities such as canoeing, rock climbing, pioneering, jumping off the power fan and the giant swing. Here are some snippets of what the students thought about camp…

I could hear my heart racing, I was so nervous for Blaize to pull the rope. As Annabelle passed the small orange rope over to Blaize. Blaize gripped onto the rope, she yanked it to her left and PEW!!! Off we went flying into the air on the giant swing. By Lucy G

There I was standing there with a bow in my hands, aiming to hit the bullseye. I took one small look at the target before... swoosh it hit the target but when I looked up... it was not my target, it was the other persons target! By Joel D

I dropped down, I could hear the hostages. I felt the teachers behind me, I moved forward and quickly dropped down again. I smelt my sweat dripping down onto my eyes. I saw the teachers in front of me as I could taste the cold air. I got onto my hands and darted forward, I touched as many hostages as I could to free them. By Billy S

As I touched the rock, I realised it was loose! “The rocks to loose!” I yelled down. “And there’s no other way!” I thought it was over and my dream of reaching the top was never going to proceed. Suddenly the rope tightened, and I rocketed up! As I looked down, I saw that one of the leaders had yanked me up to the next rock, the last rock. Adrenalin rushed through me and it felt like the tower was swaying. I pulled myself up as hard as I could and smacked the pole which let out a high pitched ring! I had, done it! By Daniel O

JAPANESE CLUB “Konnichiwa” from Japanese Club. Japanese Club meets each Wednesday at lunch time and welcomes all students from K-6. All activities during club sessions explore Japanese culture. Some of the weekly activities include learning how to draw Japanese animated characters, our ever popular Japanese themed colouring in sheets, watching Japanese children’s TV shows and films, playing with traditional Japanese toys and making origami. The club has a loyal membership with 30-40 students attending each week. Students (and their Sensei) come together to enjoy fun activities and to share a common passion for all things Japanese. Thank you very much to Miss Procopio for the use of her lovely classroom for Japanese Club and to the Stage 3 girls who help with the activities and packing up. “Arigatou gozaimasu.”

MULTICULTURAL PERSPECTIVES PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITION—Regional Finals “The human brain starts working the moment you are born and never stops until you stand up to speak in public.” George Jessel As somewhat of an expert in blundering through convoluted speech topics, it was very pleasing to see that our Grose View students had been attentive of the demonstration on what not to do… Annalise M, Hunter A, Lily B and Daniel O all managed to take a deep breath, compose themselves, and speak with a natural confidence that defied their young age. Challenged with champion speakers from six other local schools in both prepared and impromptu topics, our speakers should be proud of their efforts. Hunter was unlucky not to receive further recognition, while Annalise and Lily both received Highly Commended awards. Daniel, as winner of the competition, will be representing our local area at the next final, where we wish him the best of luck.
