From Father Mark Mertes, Pastor:
They said to him, “Teacher, where are you staying?”
He said to them, “Come and you will see.” (John 1.38)
As we embark upon 2021 the Holy Spirit invites us all, young and old, to keep learning! Or perhaps put anoth-er way, keep being converted. Surely Andrew and Simon had learned quite a bit about fishing and their trade; they were probably well schooled in their religious observance; still, Jesus tells them, “Come and you will see.” They took Jesus up on his invitation and their hearts were opened. And they changed the world! When we draw near to Jesus, he will uncover for us new truths and new graces and inspire us to be agents of change in our homes and community. Maybe 2021 is the year we can
learn more about another cul-ture….I started my journey into Hispanic Ministry by simply at-tending some Spanish masses. I didn’t speak the language, but I just enjoyed the mass and eventu-ally I learned Spanish!
I recommend the book “Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee” by Dee Brown if you want to learn about the experience of the indigenous peoples, the Native Americans who lived here in the Midwest during the 1800s. This book changed my life! →→→

Natural Family Planning Class As the anniversary of Roe v. Wade approaches, remember that most methods of contraception can cause an early abortion when they fail to suppress ovulation. The Couple to Couple League (CCL) can teach you a modern, reliable method of Natu-ral Family Planning--100% pro-life! Course in NFP begins online on Sun., Jan. 24, 2 pm. Reasonable fee; no future costs with this Sympto-Thermal Method, which uses all of the observable signs of fertility. To register for classes, e-mail Alison & Allen Greenlief at [email protected]. Online pre-registration required at Class Registration CCLI Portal (powerappsportals.com).
Baptism Jesus was baptized to make the waters holy, to take our sins upon Himself and to be an example to us to be baptized. Have you had your child or children baptized? If not, let us help you give this beautiful gift to their souls! Please call the parish office, 913-299-3370, to speak to Theresa Smith about information for English baptisms (children or adults) or to Abby Drath for Spanish baptisms.
More recently I read “The Warmth of Other Suns” by Isabel Wilker-son, which tells the story of the migration of African Americans from the South to the cities of the north and west in the 1920s-1960s. On this Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday weekend I real-ize that I’ve so much to learn!
“Come and you will see,” Jesus says. Let us be ready to be taught by Christ!
Desde Padre Mark Mertes:
Le dijeron: "Maestro, ¿dónde te quedaras?"
Él les dijo: "Venid y veréis". (Juan 1:38)

Spiritual Adoption: A Spiritual Work of Mercy
Over 30 years ago, Roe v. Wade legalized abor-tion throughout the entire 9 months of pregnancy which has resulted in over 60 million abortions since 1973. The late Archbishop Fulton Sheen en-couraged the spiritual adoption of an unborn child to help bring an end to this tragedy. A “Spiritual Adoption” is done by praying the following prayer daily for a period of nine months so that one par-ticular, but unknown, child’s life be spared abortion and allowed to live: Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I love you very much. I beg you to spare the life of [choose a name for the baby you are ‘adopting’ and insert here], the unborn baby that I have spirit-ually adopted who is in danger of abortion.” ~Prayer of Archbishop Fulton Sheen. While this child will remain unknown to you, God knows who the child is and your prayers will make a difference for the baby and for both of the parents. At the end of the program (Sept 2021), you can donate gifts of baby items to a local pregnancy center to cele-brate the birth of the child.

Call To Share Coming Soon Have you ever turned around to someone at home and said, “What?” Only to have them say, “I didn’t say anything.” Most of the time we just shrug that off, right? Can you imagine Samuel sleeping in his room? Three times he heard someone calling him. Finally, it dawned on him. God was calling him! As we near the beginning of the Archbishop’s Call to Share appeal, take some time to be still, to be quiet and listen to the Lord. Listen to what He is saying and how you will sup-port the Archbishop’s Call to Share appeal this year.
Reporting Suspected Abuse Archdiocese remains committed to investigating any allegation of abuse of a minor made against any member of the clergy or any church employee or volunteer—no matter the age of incident or cur-rent age of the victim. Individuals are encouraged to call confidential report line at 913-647-3051 or archkck.org/reportabuse to make a report to Jan Saylor, archdiocesan report investigator, and to call law enforcement directly. If a child or vulnera-ble adult is in immediate danger, call 911. Training is required before volunteering with
children at the parish or school. To volunteer with children in the parish or school, you must first attend a Virtus “Protecting God’s Children” session and pass a background check. Trainings can be found at www.virtusonline.org. Your account must remain current with assigned articles. Contact Betty Ann Battson, Virtus Coordi-nator, 299-3728 or [email protected].
