Moïse a donné aux fils d'Israël cette loi: “Quand un homme aura pris une femme et cohabité avec elle; si

elle cesse de lui plaire parce qu'il aura remarqué en elle quelque chose de malséant, il lui écrira un libelle

de divorce, le lui mettra en main, et la renverra de chez lui. Mais quel est ce quelque chose de malséant?

Selon Rabbi Shammaï, il s'agissait d'une faute grave, comme l'adultère. Pour l'école de Rabbi Hillel,

moins rigoureuse, tout servait de prétexte au divorce, comme... d'avoir laissé brûler un repas. On le voit

bien: tout ce qui est légal n'est pas forcément moral! Voilà donc le piège tendu à Jésus de Nazareth.

Contredira-t-il Moïse? Quelle que soit sa réponse, il perdra sans doute un bon nombre de ses disciples.

Les pharisiens, qui étaient généralement rigoristes, ont choisi d'insister ici sur la liberté de choix, dans le

but évident de discréditer Jésus. Soulignons en plus que saint Marc écrit à Rome, et que la loi romaine

permettait aussi bien à la femme de divorcer. Cela nous aide à saisir l'enseignement du Christ, transcrit

dans ce contexte. Il demande la même fidélité en deux phrases, l'une au masculin et l'autre au féminin. Sa

réponse s'appuie sur le projet initial du Créateur. Il semble clair que Moïse, comme premier éducateur du

peuple de Dieu, avait retenu en bonne partie le droit coutumier des peuples d'alentours; la loi du talion,

que l'Ancien Testament répète trois fois, en est un bon exemple. Jésus enseigne, pour sa part, le pardon

sans condition, ce que bien des disciples ont encore du mal à accepter. Il explique que la loi de Moïse qui

facilitait le divorce était due à notre dureté de cœur. Le mot grec qu'il emploie est une belle image biblique:

la sclérocardia. Il nous est plus facile de juger que d'aimer, avec un cœur si loin de celui de Dieu. Car

selon le projet initial — la première lecture le rappelle — nous sommes créés homme et femme, à l'image

de Dieu, pour aimer. Et puisque nous sommes destinés à vivre éternellement dans l'intimité de Dieu lui-

même, aussi bien vivre déjà d'un amour fidèle et attentif comme le sien.

The creation story reminds us of two important points. First, since the begining, God has put the entire world into our care. Second, stewardship has been around since the beginning of mankind, it isn’t something recently invented by the Church. Just as past generations built our Church, it is now our responsibility to continue to nurture and develop these gifts for future generations.

La historia de la creación nos recuerda dos puntos importantes. Primero, que desde el comienzo, Dios ha puesto el mundo entero bajo nuestro cuidado. Segundo, que el espíritu de servicio ha existido desde el comienzo de la humanidad, y no es algo que fue inventado por la Iglesia recientemente.
