Real time bacteria monitoringGRUNDFOS BACMON

Monitoring bacteria online has never been easier Today, monitoring microbial water quality requires either time-consuming laboratory methods or indirect online measurements. Results are either delayed or insufficient to support proactive action.

GRUNDFOS BACMON is a fully automated bacteria monitoring solution. BACMON can monitor microbiological parameters in your water continuously, with automated batch sampling technology delivering results in minutes without adding chemicals.

With BACMON you get:

• Online bacteria monitoring• Results in minutes• Calibration free• No chemicals or reagents – cheap and simple to use• Fully automated operation• Plug and play – simply connect to water and power

Build reliability into your processes One of the major challenges in ensuring safe drinking water is the difference between the time it takes to produce, distribute, and consume the water and the time it takes to investigate if it is safe to drink. Similarly, ensuring that contaminants stay within acceptable levels in water discharged from the wastewater treatment plant is impor-tant for avoiding collateral effects on the local community.

Typically, you wait two days for the results of routine testing sent to a lab for analysis. GRUNDFOS BACMON gives you minute-based results 24/7, allowing you to react upon sudden changes in bacteria concentrations or slow developments, or even work backwards to do source tracking.

This has benefits for all utilities and businesses who work with water and wastewater:

• Process optimisation – optimise work flows, consumer comfort and lifecycle costs• Stable processes – maintain bio stability and ensure greater knowledge for future response• Environmentally friendly – no chemicals or reagents used• Precision – save time and resources by obtaining viable and exact data• Absolute count – compare different measuring points directly and over time• Real time data – for rapid response and source identification in critical applications• Collateral effects – reduce socioeconomic and environmental impacts of contamination events• Broadly applicable – works with many water types, including potable water and treated wastewater,

as well as other clear fluids

Unique and patented optical technologyGRUNDFOS BACMON is in essence an automatic, intelligent microscope. Based on patented 3D scanning optics it classifies all particles as bacteria or non-bacteria, by automatically moving a digital microscope over a flow cell. The robust algorithm clas-sifies particles by evaluating 59 quantified image parameters.

Always online and fully integrated into your platform, data is available within minutes for you to access on your mobile device or PC. If you use the Grundfos iPad App, you get an intuitive and easy to use interface, which further simplifies and speeds up data management.

The technology is capable of distinguishing and quantifying bacteria and non-bacteria in pure and mixed suspensions and the quantification correlates with total bacterial counts.

BACMON extracts from the image detection:

• Particle count: Total number of particles• Classification: Sorting of particles into bacteria and non-bacteria• Fouling correction: Dynamically ensures measurements

are insensitive to biofouling and air bubbles

Proven performance

We have solid experience from installations where GRUNDFOS BACMON monitors water supply, wastewater treatment and other applications. In addition to the cases presented on the following pages, BACMON has already proven its worth in other areas:

Source water control BACMON is used with success to monitor the quality of raw water, for example for the intrusion of surface water.

Water aging During water distribution, water quality can change many times, commonly referred to as water aging. Today, the best way to control this is by monitoring the chlorine concentration – an indirect method that does not provide any information about bacteria in your water. BACMON provides a direct method for controlling your microbiol-ogy during distribution and storage.

Pollution detection The short response time of BACMON enables detection of intruding contaminations as well as backtracking to locate the contamination source.

Filter control in wastewater Turbidity meters are often used to control the quality of the effluent water from sand filters. Although this method does give an indication that processes are running prop-erly, turbidity meters are prone to false signals as they are

also affected by colour and air bubbles. BACMON responds purely to particle content, and is therefore a more reliable solution.

Proven performance Comparison testing between BACMON and manual methods such as total bacteria counts by DAPI staining and ATP at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) showed how BACMON automatically detects contamina-tion events such as the intrusion of rain or wastewater, enabling operators to redirect water flows and avoid con-taminated water reaching consumers.

Reservoir commissioning BACMON has proven its value as a temporary monitoring solution when commissioning water reservoirs and pipes. By automatically following the initial water quality, the operator can easily determine when to direct water back to consumers.

Pump management optimisation By following water quality during production in real-time, the impact on the quality by individual treatment steps can be evaluated. BACMON has helped guide operators to a better pump control regime that minimises release of biofilm and sediment into the water.

Optimising processes and keeping them stable

It’s like having a heart rate monitor on your system, you can follow the heart beat live and act quickly if changes occur”Martin Vestergaard, Production Manager, AquaPri

GRUNDFOS BACMON helps AquaPri, a Danish aquaculture company, follow daily processes and how they affect the fish. This enables them to reach and maintain better bio stability and offers considerable savings in cost-intensive water testing and regulating activities. In addition, the potential risk of losing business in the event of delay is reduced.

Monitoring of the aquaculture system has also shown that the BACMON solution has potential as an early warn-ing system. After measuring only a few process cycles , it is possible to determine the bacteria and non-bacteria baseline for the entire system, giving the fish farmer an indication of what the ‘normal’ levels are and therefore when the microbiology environment is stable.

This means it is possible to act proactively if the concentration rises above the baseline, which can so easily hap-pen in fish farming, if an excessive amount of feed in the water increases bacteria growth.

Don’t worry – it’s under control

It is a strong thing to monitor water quality 24/7” Tammes Lund Jepsen, Water Quality Operations, Aarhus Vand

Despite taking precautions, a diver inspecting a water holding tank in Aarhus, Denmark, kicked up sediment that entered the outflow pipe to the water supply system. GRUNDFOS BACMON registered the increased particle content at the outflow. Another BACMON sensor installed at a reservoir 7 km downstream registered the decreased water quality 1.3 days later, which corresponds to the hydraulic retention time of the water between the two measuring points.

This shows how BACMON can follow and trace residual contamination through a network, allowing rapid and precise corrective measures to be taken. Knowing that the water supply network is under constant surveillance is hugely reassuring for operators of the system – and ultimately for those drawing water from the tap.

Protecting business investments

Bacteria monitoring has helped us understand how external factors such as heavy rain and tide affect the water quality in the lagoon”Raphaëlle Lauret, Chief of Aquatic Environment Project, SUEZ

The city of Sète in the south of France is known for Étang de Thau, a lagoon famous for shellfish pro-duction. Monitoring with GRUNDFOS BACMON has helped the customer understand how natural or anthropogenic events affect the water quality in the lagoon.

For example, the measurements clearly show that the tide causes both the bacteria and particle level to increase during tidal periods.

Monitoring with BACMON identifies contamination in the lagoon before it reaches critical levels, allowing shellfish farmers to react on an early warning and put in place remedial actions, before a pos-sible contamination event impacts production.

Safe operation for critical applications

GRUNDFOS BACMON represents a unique capability for real-time monitoring of microorganisms in water”Sophie Courtois, PhD, Expert in Analytical Molecular Biology, SUEZ

In a crowded city, water supply is a critical application. In Paris, France, continuous measurements were taken of potable water from the tap: First of the tap water alone in real conditions, then arti-ficially spiked on SUEZ experimentation platform with increasing doses of water from the Seine River, and finally spiked with bacteria.

BACMON not only identified the microbiological contamination pre-cisely, it also correctly indicated the severity of the microbiological con-tamination, whereas the signals from traditional online methods such as turbidity meters were masked by the presence of abiotic particles.
