“ “HISTORY

Realizing a weak leadership base within a number of the churches across the state of

Louisiana, some of the leaders within the Greater New Orleans Area began to dialogue about the possibility of establishing a Bible college. Conversations grew more progressive in April of 2008, leading to the contacting of some Christian Colleges and Universities for advice on how to turn the vision into reality. Christian Colleges and Universities that were contacted include: Dallas Christian College, Johnson Bible College, Great Lakes Christian College, and Kentucky Christian University. As communication continued between the Colleges and Universities, and the local leaders, namely: Todd Petty – then Preaching Minister at Christian Church of Slidell; Tim Martin – Executive Director for Building Better Communities at the time; and Rick Grover – who was also at the time the Church Planter and Preaching Minister for Journey Christian Church in New Orleans, it was obvious that a leadership training and development program was desperately needed in the area. It was also clearly evident to all involved in the dialogue that a Bible College would be a big undertaking, and based upon advice offered, the agreement was to start with a leadership training institute. In the process of identifying an established Christian College to carry out an advisory role for

the process, Todd, Tim and Rick connected with of Dr. Keith Keeran who was then president of Kentucky Christian University. Dr. Keeran was intrigued, and agreed to meet with these leaders over the phone in July of 2008. At the end of that meeting, he sensed the Lord’s leading, and suggested bringing a Graduate Student of Kentucky Christian University under a partnership through the International Alliance of Christian Colleges and Universities (IACCU). Dr. Keeran assured the team of his support of what he called, “a herculean task.” Dr. Keeran gave the team the name of a student who was at the

time getting ready to graduate with a Master of Arts in Christian Leadership and was interested in establishing a leadership training ministry in a mission field. On July 18th of 2008, Todd Petty and Tim Martin made a phone call to Wimbai Mutonono, a single man at the time, with a passion for leadership ignited in the mission fields of Zimbabwe. On August 14th of 2008, Wimbai took a trip to tour the Greater New Orleans Area to identify the potential of a leadership training and

development program, and at the end of his four day stay, felt the Lord’s call to move. In October of 2008, Wimbai moved from North Carolina with assistance from the Louisiana Evangelistic Association, and he has served as the first Executive Director of the Gulf South Leadership Institute. The Gulf South Leadership Institute was established as a non-denominational leadership resource center for churches, ministries, and faith-based organizations within the Greater New Orleans Area, and was granted 501 (C) 3 status by the IRS in July of 2009. Since its establishment, the Institute has experienced steady growth, and has served a number of ministries. Gulf South Leadership Institute has also played a vital role in offering consulting services to a few business organizations in the area to facilitate respectable management. The building of people’s lives in the Gulf South Region is a great undertaking, and the Gulf South Leadership Institute supports individuals or community organizations working to make an impact in the lives of people within the region. There is overwhelming leadership potential, and GSLI exists to encourage community development by inspiring healthy, innovative and progressive leadership and management principles. Gulf South Leadership Institute is a vision for leadership training and development for the Gulf South Region and beyond.

PROGRAMS SERVICES&MINISTRY LEADERSHIP Certificate in Christian Leadership

Gulf South Leadership Institute’s Certificate in Christian Leadership is designed to equip and develop aspiring and involved leaders for vocational or lay ministry. The GSLI Certificate Program is designed with flexibility and convenience in mind. This certificate is available for leaders serving within churches, Para-church organizations, or faith-based non-profit organizations and is geared towards laying a solid biblical foundation for ministry.

Seminars and workshops: Leadership seminars are offered periodically and usually over a weekend, in-between class modules. These leadership seminars are open to all leaders and aspiring leaders. Seminars will in some cases have a general focus, and in other cases focus on a specific area of leadership or ministry. Seminars will be scheduled on a two or three day schedule, depending on the material to be covered. Gulf South Leadership Institute will be featured at various Christian conferences in the Greater New Orleans Area and in the state of Louisiana to present leadership workshops to encourage and equip leaders from various social sectors. The institute will also host conferences in different locations (Slidell, New Orleans East, Mandeville, and Kenner) focusing on a specific leadership or management aspect or discipline (e.g. Servant Leadership, Transformational Leadership, or Value Based Leadership).

ORGANIZATIONAL LEADERSHIP Leadership/Management Consulting

Gulf South Leadership Institute also facilitates healthy management practices for organizations within the Greater New Orleans Area. To this end, the Institute is also available to serve as a consulting agency for businesses or organizations to aid their leaders and managers. We strongly believe that healthy businesses and communities are the result of healthy leadership. Many businesses today face challenges which reduce effectiveness and profitability, and in most cases a well- trained and prepared leadership or management team is the solution to overcoming the challenges. At Gulf South Leadership Institute we offer leadership development for organizations to inspire significant impact on talent retention and attraction. Our consulting model is support-based, and involves engaging in day-to-day leadership/management operations for a specific amount of time while compiling an analysis. After the compilation of the analysis, a plan of action is developed and communicated, outlining the strengths and weaknesses of the leadership/management team under review. We offer a wealth of knowledge and experience to help our clients build effective business environments, utilizing a number of current leadership and management principles tailored to meet their business needs. In communicating and deploying these principles, we employ unique methodologies to design, plan, develop, implement and support each consulting project to a successful completion.

BIB 500 – Getting Our Story Straight (Survey of the Old Testament)This course is an overview of the contents of the Bible as seen through the motif of the mission of God. Students explore background information necessary to convey the story that holds the Bible together. While the course does not presuppose knowledge of the Bible, those wanting to hear the story again will benefit.

BIB 501 – Survey of the New TestamentThe course introduces the students to historic, geographical, and cultural background information of the New Testament, specific to concepts, ideas, and theology. In days when preaching and teaching of the Word is becoming more focused on modern, rather than contextualized application, it is crucial to go back to the roots and see some key tenets of the New Testament through the prism of the 1st century AD. The course will employ a variety of sources from Early Christianity, and 1st Century Judaism to study the New Testament.

BIB 503 – Life and Teachings of ChristStudents come to know Jesus’ purpose and significance by studying the major events and movements of His life as presented in the four gospels. Confidence in the gospels as historical resources is also attained.

BIB 504 – Acts AliveA short course on Luke’s second volume, the Book of Acts. This course focuse on the main storyline of Acts with particular attention to Luke’s purpose in writing as shown through his major themes. The course stresses that at its core, Acts is a missional document that invites the church of all ages deeper into God’s mission.

BIB 505 – Pastoral EpistlesIs the exegetical treatment and modern application of Paul’s letters to the evangelists, Timothy and Titus, students confront the modern challenges and the biblical design of the work of an evangelist.

BIB 506 – Introduction to the BibleAn introductory study of the Bible. The sixty-six books of the Bible are set in chronological order and correlated with the corresponding periods of biblical history. Included in the study will be a brief analysis of each book, noting the theme, historical development, personalities, main events, and progression of the redemptive system.

BIB 507 – Greek Tools for Bible StudyA course designed to prepare preachers, teachers and leaders with limited or no foundational knowledge of the original languages. This class will focus on giving a basic understanding of the Greek language, and is geared more towards offering a working knowledge of the tools that can help one go deeper into the meaning of Scripture.

CHL 500 – Foundations of Biblical LeadershipA course that provides an integrated analysis of Biblical leadership. The understanding of Biblical leadership is vital to being an effective leader in a Church or faith based organization. Students build this understanding on a biblical foundation of leadership. Students focus on Biblical leadership while incorporating subjects such as communication, mission, vision, values, best practices, future/developing models, measurement, staff development, contextualization, strategic mapping, and administration.

CHL 501 – Missional Leadership (Dynamics of Servant Leadership)Explores how servant leadership, even recognized in the business world, supports any understanding of legitimate power in the context of the Kingdom of God. Further, this class explores how servant leadership is the basis of missional leadership.

CHL 502 – Developing Local Church LeadershipA practical seminar, involving a lot of interaction and participation. The purpose of this seminar is to implement Biblical strategies for local church leadership development. Each church is different in its own way, but the leadership must be set in such a way that it helps the church grow and impact people in the community. The leadership of a local congregation plays a vital role, thus the seminar will look at biblical models of leadership and examine how they are implemented in churches in the US.

CHL 506 – Transformational LeadershipSocial and business environments are constantly changing, and with constant changes new challenges surface. Transformational leaders help organizations or communities navigate through the change process. The course examine organizational leadership in the context of managing continuous change, innovation, and adaptation. Topics include models and theories of leadership and change management; behavior of individuals and teams in organizations; and communicating strategic intent.

CHL 507 – Value Based LeadershipLeadership can be both beneficial and destructive. The authority that God gives to just a few people to lead weighs heavily on the shoulders of those who carry it, whether they realize that or not. What are the guidelines that should be foundational for any leader? At what point are the guidelines needed? Why is it important to reinforce values and morale for the leadership? What part does such reinforcement play on the culture and ethos of leadership? What leadership are we cultivating today – in our families, churches, communities? This seminar will discuss Christian values as the foundation and guidelines that each leader must have.

CONSULTING

Gulf South Leadership Institute’s organizational leadership consulting service is designed for individuals (sole proprietors), small, and medium sized businesses or organizations. There is a very familiar saying, “if you keep on doing what you’ve always done, you will keep on getting the same results,” and it is unfortunate

that numerous organizations are caught doing the same things and expecting different results. A traditional approach to manaagement can have the negative effect of reducing effectiveness and profitability, but

this can be overcome by seeking a more progressive approach to management. Gulf South Leadership Institute’s organizational leadership consulting helps individuals and organizations maximize their effectiveness, by improving leadership ability, work ethic, and team building. As leadership and management solutions change daily, many organizations are inadequately equipped with the necessary resources for research and implementation of management principles that are consistent with the changes. In such cases, it is of great benefit to bring in a specialist to help with the process of navigating through change.

CONSULTING HELPS INDIVIDUALS AND ORGANIZATIONS MAXIMIZE THEIR

After the compilation of the analysis, a plan of action is developed and communicated, outlining strengths and weaknesses of the leadership/management model or team under review. The last stage of the process is to advise the client about the necessary steps needed to implement a specific plan, including communicating the timelines involved in executing the plan. At the request of the client, a follow up consultation is also available at no extra cost, to help confirm that the advised plan of action is still being followed and yielding the expected outcomes.

FINANCIAL INFORMATIONREGISTRATION – All ministry certificate students and seminar participants will be required to pay a registration fee to cover administration costs. The Gulf South Leadership Institute staff and faculty also strive towards a legacy for the next generation by supporting and actively engaging

themselves in the training and development of young leaders. The Leadership Legacy Program is the platform through which young leaders are mentored and given a chance to establish themselves as agents of change and community development.

Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner authors of a best-seller, A Leader’s Legacy communicate clearly about the value of legacy for those in leadership – “By asking ourselves how we want to be remembered, we plant the seeds for living our lives as if we matter. By living each day as if we matter, we offer up our own unique legacy. By offering up our own unique legacy, we make the world we inhabit a better place than we found it.”  Staff and faculty at Gulf South Leadership Institute consider leadership legacy the concept that makes or breaks organizations, businesses, communities and even families. Establishing a legacy by mentoring young people who will in turn become leaders is by far the greatest way we can measure the success of any of our programs. As a team of qualified leaders, we realize and acknowledge that leadership brings with it the responsibility to do something significant that results in our communities, organizations, educational institutions, families, nations, and the world being better places than they are today.

Community development happens in the context of people development, and we believe that as we train one leader at a time we are adding quality to the community. Gulf South Leadership Institute highly prioritizes establishing a legacy for the generations to come, and to this end the Leadership Legacy Program reaches out to the youth to mentor them with positive leadership principles and concepts. Because we are serious about developing healthy and creative communities, we are intentional about educating and mentoring the youth and instilling within them a positive approach to leadership. We reach out to the youth using learning environments that involve them and their peers and through areas of interest such as sports, games, and the arts. The Leadership Legacy Program is workshop style youth leadership training and development initiative hosted by Gulf South Leadership Institute. During the workshops, participants engage in interactive, artistic, athletic events with their peers while learning to be responsible community leaders, creative problem solvers and visionary citizens. It has been discovered through research and experience that today’s youth learn better when they are engaged in some activities that they are interested in and the Leadership Legacy Program takes advantage of these findings in its approach. Gulf South Leadership Institute also envisions partnerships with public figures whose achievements appeal to today’s youth to serve as instructors and guest speakers. Gulf South Leadership Institute’s vision with the Leadership Legacy Program is to empower young people to achieve their highest potential, encourage self-identification and self-development and to stimulate problem solving skills.
