DOVER –Meet Arizona

“Hi, my name is Arizona and I came here from Georgia. I am a whole lotta dog with plenty of love to go around! I don’t do well with other dogs, but I don’t mind cats. I would do best with older kids, 16+. I am looking for an owner who has experience with large breed dogs. I also have a little trouble giving up my food or bones, so an owner who is will-ing work with me would be best. Do you have room in your home for a big, sweet dog like me?”Age: 2 years, Sex: SF, Breed: Mastiff mix

KITTERY, MAINE –The Portsmouth Naval

Shipyard’s (PNSY) Warrior Health Clinic and the Morale Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Department co-sponsored a Wounded Warrior and Veter-ans’ Fair Wednesday, December 12, at the Kittery Community Center. The informational fair was specifically aimed at all De-partment of Defense service dis-abled veterans or Wounded War-

riors, veterans and their families featuring over twenty organiza-tions which offer recreation and job opportunities along with support services.

“We are very excited about hosting this event for the first time and looking forward to making this an annual event,” said Gary Macleay, PNSY MWR Director. “Getting the word out regarding all the dif-ferent services, recreational pro-

grams and job opportunities that are available for Wounded War-riors and veterans is important – we do not want any wounded warrior or veteran to say they didn’t know this was available.”

“I also want to thank the Kittery Recreation Department and the Community Center for allowing us to hold this event in their wonderful facility,” added Macleay. “This whole event has been about partnering with the great organizations that are com-mitted to helping our Wounded Warriors and veterans and with the help of the town of Kittery, we are able to host the event in a wonderful facility.”

For more information on this event, contact Gary Ma-cleay, PNSY MWR director, at 207-438-1583.

Dear Computer Lady,How do I take a picture

(snapshot) of a page? Sometimes for work when I am compos-ing email, I want to show what I am talking about. Please help! Thanks, Elaine

Dear Elaine,This is a great question!

I take snapshots of my screen quite often when I am writing directions for people, and I use special software just for that pur-pose.

Fortunately, though, you don’t have to purchase any software to take a basic screen-shot. Every Windows computer comes with the functions neces-sary to do this.

The first component of taking a screenshot is easy. Just press the “Print Screen” key on your keyboard. You won’t see

any immediate results, but in the background, Windows has just taken a picture of your screen, and stored it on the clipboard. It is up to you to paste the copy into a program that can use it.

The Windows “Paint” pro-gram is perfect for this. Just open Paint, (found in the “Programs” menu under “Accessories”) click on “Edit” in the menu bar, then click “Paste” and your screen-shot will be pasted in this “Paint” window. From there, you can edit, crop and save the picture.

If you are running Win-dows 7, it is even easier to take a screenshot using a new feature called the “Snipping Tool.”

The Snipping Tool is also located in your programs menu under “Accessories,” and you can use it to select a section of the screen you want to copy, and then save your image. Elizabeth

Dear Computer Lady,I’m a recruiter and main-

tain client/candidate folders in Outlook 2007 (v12).

I keep all correspondence, which over the years has built into hundreds of folders and thousands of messages. I have searched for ways to move this info for storage but the only so-lution to date would be to open each message and copy/paste into a Word doc – which could take weeks.

Is there any other way to move folders/messages from outlook to a retrievable storage space? Thank you, Lisa

Dear Lisa,It depends on how you

want to be able to access the mes-sages in the future.

Outlook (which is part of Microsoft Office) has an archive feature that allows you to ar-chive messages. When you do this, they are moved into a new file that you could copy to a disk and move to another computer.

The only catch is that you would need to have Outlook in-stalled on any computer that you wanted to access the messages from.

Dear Computer Lady,Is Windows XP Mode

available for Windows 8? Thank you in advance for your help. Ren

Dear Ren,Unfortunately, Microsoft

has decided not to develop Win-dows XP mode for Windows 8.

Since extended support for XP will end in April 2014, it does not make sense for them to con-tinue to develop it.

If you are using software or hardware the depends on XP mode to run, you are better off sticking with Windows 7 for now, but keep in mind that you will have to upgrade eventually and move to a newer software or hardware platform that will

work with Windows 8 or even the next Microsoft operating system. Elizabeth

Dear Computer Lady,Are the clipboard and Note

Pad the same? I see the note pad on my list of programs but not the clipboard. Thanks so much, Theresa

Dear Theresa,No, the clipboard and

Notepad are not the same thing.Notepad is a very basic text

viewing and editing program. Notepad does not store format-ting information about text like bold or underlined, only unfor-matted text can be viewed or edited in Notepad.

The clipboard is a tempo-rary storage area for information that you have copied from one location on your computer and plan to use in another location on your computer. Any time that you select text or graphics and then use the “Copy” or “Cut” commands, you move that text or graphics to the clipboard where they will be stored until you use the “Paste” command, or you cut or copy another selec-tion. salaries increased slightly less, engineering majors from the class of2012 had the highest salaries of any academic dis-cipline, earning an average of $60,639, which marked a 1.9 percent increase from 2011. Humanities and social services majors were on the opposite

end of the spectrum, earning roughly $37,000 in 2012, which was just 1.4 percent higher than the previous year.

Bachelor’s degree gradu-ates from the class of 2012

had a small reason to be hap-pier than those who graduat-ed a year ahead of them. Ac-cording to the National Asso-ciation of Colleges and Em-ployers, class of 2012 gradu-ates who were able to find a job in a difficult job market earned an average salary that was 1.7 percent higher than the average salary earned by the class of 2011. Class of 2012 grads who landed a job earned an average of $44,259 while 2011 grads earned an average of $43,521. Though such a small percentage in-crease may not seem like a significant step in the right direction, NACE notes that there were increases in sala-ries among all broad catego-ries of majors, suggesting that the job market is on the mend for new graduates regardless of their field of study. Busi-ness and communications majors had a particularly good year, seeing their sala-ries climb 2.2 percent since 2011. Though their average

DOVER –Meredith Eib has been

selected to perform in the All-Eastern Honors Mixed Chorus. With assistance from her music teacher, Brenda LaForce, Eib will prepare remarkably chal-lenging music that she will per-form under the leadership of prominent conductors in this biennial event. Students will spend three days rehearsing with one of four conductors during the Easter Division Conference of The National Association for Music Education (NAFME) to be held in Hartford, CT in prepa-ration for performances on April 7, 2013.

The NAFME All-Eastern Honors Ensembles, consisting of a concert band, symphony orchestra, mixed chorus, treble voice chorus, and jazz ensemble, are organized by members of The National Association for Music Education. The concert band and symphony orchestra will each have approximately one hundred fifty instrumen-talists, the jazz ensemble will have twenty instrumentalists the treble voice chorus will have one hundred twenty vocalists, and the mixed chorus will have approximately three hundred

fifty vocalists. Student partici-pation from each state is deter-mined by a percentage of the total NAFME Eastern Division membership, with no state given less than two percent representa-tion.

Each of the state music edu-cators associations in the Eastern Division, which includes Atlan-tic coast states and Europe, over-see the selection process in their state during the spring and early fall of the year before the event and compile ranked lists of rec-ommended juniors and seniors for consideration. The method used to compile the lists varies

from state to state, although all recommended students must have participated (or will be par-ticipating in) their home all-state festivals.

The committee builds the ensembles from the state presi-dents’ ranked lists, trying to mimic the state population per-centages in each group. The jazz ensemble, due to its size and in-strumentation, is formed to rep-resent every state in the division.

The 2013 NAFME All-Eastern Honors Ensembles will perform for an audience of thou-sands on Sunday, April 7, 2013, at the Bushnell Center from the Performing Arts, Mortensen Hall, In Hartford, CT. For pro-gram and ticket information, visit www.nafme-eastern.org.

That’s over $3,000 more than was raised at last year’s Bash.

The ‘Brook’s Rockin Holiday Bash had a Country Christmas theme set to get all those who attended into the holiday spirit. Mixing coun-try music with a Christmas in the country, the ballroom was transformed into a barn room. Folks showed up dawning their favorite cowboy hats, boots, flannel shirts, and anything else to signify the fun, casual atmo-sphere of a country gathering. O Steaks and Seafood provided southern delights with a menu that included pulled pork, corn pudding, grits, barbecue chick-en, cole slaw, and much more. DOVER –Working in collabora-

tion with University of New Hampshire graduate student, Elizabeth Burakowski, St. Thomas Aquinas High School Advanced Placement (AP) and Honors Environmental Sci-ence classes are looking at how albedo, or the reflectivity of surfaces, affects local weather and climate. Albedo monitor-ing is a method of recording the ratio of reflected energy to incoming solar energy and how this ratio impacts the environ-ment. Burakowski is collect-ing data for The Community Collaborative Rain, Hail, and Snow Network (The CoCo-RAHs).

Once it begins to snow, St. Thomas Aquinas students, led by science teachers Dr. Sue Pike and Diane Finan, will measure the temperature and density of the snow as well as cloud cover on a daily basis. This data will then be incorporated into Burakowski’s research project which will become published information. The students will be working on data collection for the project from late No-vember until March.

“This is a wonderful op-portunity for our students to get outside and collect real data that will be used by scientists to help further our understanding of how albedo changes with local weather,” Pike said.

In addition to the current work being done, a weather sta-tion was installed on the roof

(l-r) STA seniors Lauren Murdock and Maddie Cassidy, and UNH graduate student Elizabeth Bura-kowski (courtesy photo)

of the school this past summer which includes a solar input sensor. This new means of data collection will provide the stu-dents with a way to gather in-formation about humidity and temperature in relation to the patterns found during albedo monitoring.

“We plan to begin a multi-year database of weather data (both collected from the albedo study and from the newly in-stalled weather station) that we can use in the classroom,” said Pike. “It makes it much more real for the students to use data gener-ated in our own backyard.”

regarding eelgrass, oysters, and clams.”

Farrell and Rouillard pre-sented these concerns, along with the Spruce Creek Associa-tion and Kittery’s Public Works Department at the Kittery Com-munity Center Tuesday night. Thursday they were at the Great Bay Discovery Center in Green-land for a similar presentation, followed by a chance for commu-nity feedback.

“These are real abridged versions of what we did on Friday,” Farrell said. “We go over the indicators with tables and graphs. Then have a ques-tion and answer period, and a short discussion on different so-lutions.”

Examples of such solutions included rain garden installa-tions and a program to identify human sources of bacteria, ac-cording to Farrell.

To help curb the pollution effects from stormwater runoff, the Hodgson Brook Restoration Project in Portsmouth started with simple rain barrel sales, selling barrels to homeowners at farmers markets and online. Recently they began installing rain gardens in neighborhoods around the city. The group gets the labor and expertise donated from area landscapers and uses volunteers to help do the dig-ging. In September, they were in the Pannaway neighborhood by Portsmouth Regional Hospi-tal. Plenty of strong hands made

...ESTUARIES from page 6

quick work of three gardens, and a fourth, impromptu garden was installed for a resident who caught wind of the project while work was underway. Across the city there are now more than seven residential rain gardens, two tree box filters, two engi-neered rain gardens with two more on their way, she said.

Another solution Farrell explained involved FB Envi-ronmental Associates. Work-ing with the Spruce Creek As-sociation, the Town of Kittery recently hired Environmen-tal Canine Services LLC to help identify human sources of bacteria in Kittery, Maine. Employing the services of two trained dogs, Sable and Logan, the town was able to confirm that the bacteria in an area of beach and tide pools in Kittery were from human waste, and the source was tracked to an abandoned outhouse back in the woods that was leaking into the wetland above the beach. Since this discovery, the Town of Kittery has pumped out and sealed the outhouse to prevent further contamination, and the bacteria levels have dropped a lot.

Farrell said PREP will take a break for the holidays, and then continue in 2013 to do two presentations a month around the 52 towns (42 in NH and 10 in Maine) that drain into Great Bay and the Piscataqua River.

Psoriatic Arthritis Affects Many PeoplePeople who suffer from pso-

riasis or have a family history of this skin condition may be at risk for psoriatic arthritis, a serious dis-ease that causes extensive swelling and joint pain.

The Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis Education Center notes that up to 30 percent of people with psoriasis also develop psoriatic arthritis. Psoriasis is an auto-im-mune skin condition in which the skin reproduces cells at an acceler-ated rate. This causes patches of flaky, irritated skin, also known as plaques. Psoriatic arthritis can de-velop at any time, but it is common between the ages of 30 and 50. Environmental factors, genes and immune system responses play a role in the onset of the disease. Pa-tients with psoriatic arthritis can develop inflammation of their ten-dons, cartilage, eyes, lung lining, and sometimes aorta.

Psoriasis and psoriatic ar-thritis do not necessarily occur at the same time. Psoriasis generally comes first and then is followed by the joint disease. The skin ailment

precedes the arthritis in nearly 80 percent of patients. Psoriatic ar-thritis is a rheumatic disease that can affect body tissues as well as joints.

Symptoms of the disease vary, but may include the follow-ing: generalized fatigue; swollen fingers and toes; stiffness, pain, throbbing, swelling, and tender-ness in joints; reduced range of motion; changes in fingernails; and redness and pain of the eyes.In many cases, psoriatic arthritis affects the distal joints, those that are closest to the nail in fingers and toes. The lower back, knees, ankles, and wrists also are af-fected.

It is important to talk to a dermatologist if you suffer from psoriasis. Treatments usually in-clude a combination of medica-tions and therapeutic exercises to reduce pain and swelling. NSAID pain relievers help but may be combined with stronger medications, such as corticoste-roids, as well as medications that suppress the immune system.

focus area was expanded to in-clude 10 Maine communities.”

Jill Farrell, the commu-nity impact program manager for PREP, said the report was expanded this time around, in-creasing the number of indicators from 12 to 21.

“If you lump the cautionary and negative categories together, the data suggests quite a few con-cerns,” Farrell said, “especially

ROCHESTER –Charles Dickens’ timeless

classic tale “A Christmas Carol” turns modern at the Roches-ter Opera House on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, December 20, 21 and 22 at 7 p.m. and on Saturday & Sunday, December 22 and 23 at 2 p.m. They trace the life of miserly Scrooge from his childhood in the 1940’s through his adulthood in the late twenti-eth century. Director Shay Wil-lard weaves the magic of this be-

loved Christmas tale into a fam-ily-friendly story in a contempo-rary setting with the captivating sound of live, classic and modern music directed by Kathy Fink.

Reserve tickets online at www.rochesteroperahouse.com or call/stop by the box office 603-335-1992, M/W/F from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and two hours before the show. The Rochester Opera House is located in City Hall, 31 Wakefield Street, in Rochester. Tickets: $16/$14.

MANCHESTER –The disease of addiction

to alcohol and/or drugs in New Hampshire is a problem of sig-nificant magnitude. In spite of its ranking as one of the healthi-est states in the nation, substance abuse rates in New Hampshire are higher than in many other areas of the country. According to the NH Department of Health and Human Services, the state currently has the capacity to treat less than 10 percent of the population in need. Easter Seals NH is committed to battling this enormous societal problem by launching the $1 million New Beginnings Capital Campaign that will expand programming and relocate the Farnum Center, currently housed at 235 Hanover Street in Manchester, NH, to a new facility at 140 Queen City Avenue in Manchester, previ-ously occupied by the Queen City Inn.

The Farnum Center, estab-

lished in 1981 by former Public Service of NH employee Eliot Priest, is an affordable treatment facility for recovery from alcohol and drug dependence. Joining the Easter Seals NH family in 2008, the Farnum Center cur-rently serves 1,400 clients and their families annually.

“It is evident the Farnum Center fills a critical need in New Hampshire; however, the current facility is inadequate to continue safely meeting the needs of our clients and does not allow for ex-pansion to fully meet the needs of the community,” said Easter Seals president and CEO Larry Gammon. “Waiting lists remain long, much-needed programs have been put on hold, and space restrictions prohibit facility ex-pansion.”

The new Farnum Center, on track to open its doors in April 2013, will have the capacity to serve more than 2,200 people a year and will offer residential and transitional living programs as well as a medical detoxification unit—the first in New Hamp-shire.

“The need for substance abuse treatment and recovery services in New Hampshire is extreme,” said Gammon. “Alco-hol or drug dependencies con-tribute to crime and fill our jails

and prisons. Additionally, New Hampshire has the highest per capita rate of overdose deaths in the country. Given the seri-ousness of these problems, one would expect a variety of preven-tion and treatment options would exist; however this is simply not the case. Expanding programs and capacity at the Farnum Center will benefit the commu-nity for years to come.”

The current and former board members of Easter Seals NH and the Farnum Center have embraced the campaign whole-heartedly. Easter Seals NH board members have al-ready raised more than $263,000. These funds, the result of a chal-lenge gift combined with dona-tions, will recognize Gammon, Easter Seals president and CEO of more than 40 years, by naming the atrium at the new Farnum Center in his honor.

If you are interested in learn-ing more about the New Begin-nings Capital Campaign for the Farnum Center or making a per-sonal donation, contact Easter Seals NH Vice President of Major Gifts and Planned Giving Linda Sirak at 603-621-3456 or [email protected]. Optima Bank was re-cently named 2012 Business of the Year by the Greater Portsmouth Chamber of Com-merce. Founded five years ago by Daniel and Pamela Mor-rison, Optima now has assets of $226.3 million, said Daniel Morrison, president and chief executive officer.

Optima Bank & Trust is making a difference in our community. They are pleased to be able to give back to the community through loans to individuals and businesses, as well as through their volunteer-ing, donations and sponsor-ships.

The bank’s staff has grown to 34 employees, with a plan to reach 40 by year’s end.

Optima Bank & Trust has branches at Two Harbour Place, Portsmouth, 26 Lafay-ette Road, in North Hampton and 17 Portsmouth Ave., in Stratham. To learn more about Optima Bank & Trust, visit them at www.optimabank.com.

EXETER –Imagine an extended grow-

ing season that started in the spring and continued all year round. You could plant all varieties of vegeta-bles and plants in the fall, and have them come out healthy and full throughout the winter. For Ellis School in Fremont, NH, with the help of ReVision Energy and the Seacoast Area Renewal Energy Initiative (SEAREI), this dream has been realized.

This past September, Re-Vision Energy volunteered their time and two solar hot water col-lectors with a solar storage tank to the Ellis School for use in their greenhouse. This will benefit the students understanding of agricul-tural and farming studies, as well as the school’s lunch menus and energy independence.

“The school uses the green-house to grow house plants and vegetables for their plant sales to benefit the community,” says Heather Fournier, manager of Re-Vision Energy’s New Hampshire branch. “They can also serve the food and learn about the sun as fuel and energy use.”

Ellis School had received a $5,000 grant called the “Tool-box For Education” grant from

DOVER –Rebecca Proctor of RSP

Studio & Framing recently joined the Greater Dover Chamber of Commerce and celebrated with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

RSP Studio Custom Fram-ing is a frame shop located in Dover that caters to local artists and art enthusiasts, providing gallery-quality framing for an af-fordable price. Proctor, the owner, spends considerable time promot-

ing local artists and artisans, help-ing to make connections between artists and those who appreciate quality and craftsmanship. Her shop has become a gallery of some of the finest work produced by Seacoast artists.

RSP Studio Custom Fram-ing is located at the Washington Street Mills, One Washington Street, Suite 3130, in Dover, NH. For additional information, call 603-978-6702.

Beverly Hodsdon, Membership & Business Resource Manager, Dover Chamber of Commerce, Laurie Widmark, LegalShield, Chamber Ambas-sador, Robert Gagnon, Vice President of Business Development, Optima Bank & Trust, Shawn Olsten, Clear Channel Communications, Chamber Ambassador, Bill Young, Director, Senior Vice President and Chief Lend-ing Officer, Optima Bank & Trust, Pamela Morrison, Director, Senior Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer, Optima Bank & Trust, Dan Morrison, Chairman, President & Chief Executive Officer, Optima Bank & Trust, Alyson Graybill, Vice President & Branch Manager, Optima Bank & Trust, and Carol Estes, Vice President, Commercial Loan Officer, Optima Bank & Trust. location gives us a proximity to Northern MA, Central NH and Southern ME where we can now tap into a strong labor pool, expand our operations and better service our custom-ers’ needs. With this move we have plans on adding 10 new employees over the next three months and adding an additional 25 employees over the next two years.” (courtesy photo)

Lowe’s Home Improvement. They used the money to improve their greenhouse and to switch to solar energy.

The Lowe’s in Epping re-ferred Jen Rydeen and John Her-rman, both from Ellis School, to ReVision Energy because of their success in installing solar systems around N.H. and Maine.

As it happened, ReVision had another connection to Ellis School, which made the partner-ship between the two even more organic.

“I live in Fremont and my daughters attend Ellis School,” says Fournier. “So I was able to get more involved by being a resident and a parent.”

With SEAREI and other local volunteers, Ellis School re-ceived the help it needed to install this solar hot water system. New plant beds were built by Fremont residents while other volunteers helped winterizing and cleaning out the greenhouse.

ReVision’s Fournier explains how the system works. “The solar panels are mounted on an adjacent steel storage structure and a pipe run is installed from the collectors to inside of the greenhouse where the solar storage tank holds the hot water. Then, food-grade propylene glycol transfers heat from the col-lectors to the tank; there is a coil in the tank for the glycol which indi-rectly heats the water. Water then gets transferred to the plant beds to provide heat and extend the grow-ing season.”

With the installation of the solar hot water system, the students will have a much more elaborate education in the science of botany, agriculture and renew-able energy. They will learn about commissioning and decommis-sioning the solar hot water system, have hands-on experience on how to run the system and read the controls, as well as gain an under-standing of the science behind the

technology and how the system helps the gardens survive the brutal winter.

“The students will become well-educated solar green-house farmers!” says Fournier.

This is a big step for Ellis School—and for public schools in general. It’s important for children to learn about the science behind alternative energy systems, as well as all the benefits that come with it. ReVision Energy has helped a number of others schools in Maine and NH, incorporate solar energy

systems and reduce their use of fossil fuels and the money they spend on them.

“ReVision Energy’s mission is to reduce CO2 emissions,” says Fournier. “We can help people, schools and businesses transition away from fossil fuels to using healthy, sustainable solar energy.”
